Dick Armey is Glad He’s Not Married to Joan Walsh

By: Teddy Partridge Wednesday January 28, 2009 4:43 pm

And, somehow, I think the feeling is mutual.

Dick Armey, slightly tipsy sexist, keeps trying to get Chris Matthews to agree with him that the little lady is talking “prattle.” Chris Matthews, having felt the wrath of the fem-bloggers, won’t take the bait.

Hi Amanda! Can You ‘Splain Something To Me?

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday January 28, 2009 4:00 pm

Maybe you can help me out here. I’ve read the text of the bill (which we’ve handily reprinted here) and I can’t quite find that part.  The way I read the Employee Free Choice Act, workers would have the right to organize themselves by “signed valid authorizations,” which would not affect their right to also have an “election by secret ballot” under the National Labor Relations Act (which you can find here).  Neither mentions anything about “public signature” or “card-check.”

What am I missing?

KBR’s Shoddy Electrical Work Sparks Negligent Homicide Inquiry For Soldier’s Death

By: Christy Hardin Smith Wednesday January 28, 2009 3:00 pm

It seems that the continued push by the Democratic Policy Committee regarding allegations of shoddy electrical work from KBR have finally opened the Pentagon investigative door.  From a DPC press release (PDF): Two U.S. Senators today are requesting a meeting with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the mother of a U.S. soldier who has been informed by an Army investigator that her son’s death by electrocution at his base in Baghdad has been re-classified by the Army from “accidental” to “negligent homicide” by contractor KBR and two of its supervisors….

Is Cass Sunstein, Obama’s Pick to Regulate Regulations, Too Fond of Cost-Benefit Analysis?

By: Kirk James Murphy, M.D. Wednesday January 28, 2009 2:40 pm

The good folks at Center For Progressive Reform recently released their report on the issues surrounding Cass Sunstein, Obama’s pick for OIRA – the part of OMB with the power to kill off health, food, enviro, and any other regulation intended to protect us and the living world we depend upon.

Reagan and Bush are Driving the Stimulus Bill

By: Scarecrow Wednesday January 28, 2009 1:45 pm

Yesterday, the House vote by only 224-199 to move the economic stimulus bill to the floor. The margin was short 24 Blue Dog Democrats, economic know-nothings, who demanded a return to pay-as-you-go budgeting. They’re a distraction from the main issues.

Did Holder Promise No Torture Prosecutions?

By: emptywheel Wednesday January 28, 2009 12:45 pm

Both Sheldon Whitehouse and Pat Leahy suggest that–even though John Cornyn and others made an inappropriate demand that Holder promise not to prosecute any Bushies–Holder did not make that promise.

But right as that came out, the Moonie Times came out with a Kit Bond interview claiming that Holder had made such promises.

Apparently Gay Students’ Expulsion Upheld By California Courts

By: Lisa Derrick Wednesday January 28, 2009 12:00 pm

A California appeals court ruled Monday that a Christian school could expel students perceived as gay. California Lutheran High School in Riverside County–part of the extremely fundamental Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod–expelled two 16-year-old girls for having “a bond of intimacy” that was “characteristic of a lesbian relationship.”

Bipartisan This! House Republicans Gain Stimulus Concessions, Then Pledge to Vote “No”

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday January 28, 2009 9:29 am

Who could have thought we could have more fun than we did yesterday listening to one Republican after another on cable news tell us that Democrats just were not getting with Obama’s spirit of “bipartisanship” and letting them have everything they want in the stimulus bill?
