Peggy Noonan Suddenly Decides That Hero-Worshipping Presidents Is “Un-American”

By: Blue Texan Friday January 9, 2009 10:35 am

How can you tell a Democrat is President? When Nooners writes something like this:

The Founders, who were awed by the presidency and who made it a point, the early ones, to speak in their inaugural addresses of how unworthy they felt, would be astonished and confounded by the over-awe with which we view presidents now.

Blagojevich Impeached

By: emptywheel Friday January 9, 2009 10:20 am

When it became clear that Nixon would be impeached, he had the good sense to step down. Not so Blago, who vowed today to remain governor in spite of the 114-1 vote in the IL House favor of impeaching him today.

Obama Inspires Confidence, but the Stimulus Plan Doesn’t

By: Jane Hamsher Friday January 9, 2009 9:33 am

I’ve watched Obama’s public appearances over the past few days and I think he’s doing an excellent job of that. It’s not an easy task — he has to communicate a sense of urgency about passing a stimulus package without panicking people, and at the same time quell the crisis of confidence that keeps them from spending and money out of circulation. Obama’s clear compassion, his obvious intelligence and his reassuring manner have been impressive.

There are, however, serious concerns about the details of his stimulus package.

Oops, He Did It Again: Eric Holder’s New Pardon Controversy

By: bmaz Friday January 9, 2009 8:00 am

Hot off the presses, Tom Hamburger and Josh Meyer at the LA Times have an exclusive on new information detailing Obama Attorney General nominee Eric Holder’s involvement in the ugly and controversial clemency grants given to members of the violent Puerto Rican terrorist groups FALN and Los Macheteros. And Team Obama has hired Bush toady, and Alberto Gonzales’ attorney, George Terwilliger to reassure everybody it is all okay. Brilliant.

Steve Rattner, Cerberus Capital and a Less-Than-Competent Car Czar

By: Jane Hamsher Friday January 9, 2009 7:03 am

Since Marcy and Josh have both done the blogospheric head scratch over Steve Rattner as car czar, I’d like to dial things back to something Arianna wrote in 2006 about Rattner’s support of Lieberman against Ned Lamont and add my own “WTF?”Of course, there are some Democratic power players who are supporting Lieberman outright.

Give Kids a Head Start: Early Childhood Education and Real, Long-Term Stimulus

By: Christy Hardin Smith Friday January 9, 2009 6:00 am

Too much effort goes into short-term, band-aid solutions, while we fail to take a hard look at longer-term root issues. We have an opportunity in the upcoming stimulus package to rectify that by adding desperately needed funding to early childhood education programs like Head Start and Birth to Three. Head Start is especially well-equipped to disburse received funds in communities across America. Their community grant structure allows for newly deposited funding to go right back out to local businesses, structural repairs, new school initiatives — in short, more potential jobs.
