As we focus our attention on the happiness and excitement of tomorrow’s historic inauguration, we risk losing sight of the human tragedy unfolding right before our eyes. I speak, of course, of all the Bush administration employees who will be out of work tomorrow.

Nothing new on the contest side, now that the schedule’s been fixed — the next big event will be the Franken Motion to Dismiss, which I would love to see happen but I suspect won’t. That occurs this Wednesday.

In a move that has keenly disappointed some of his strongest conservative allies, President Bush has decided not to pardon Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, for his 2007 conviction in the CIA leak case, two White House officials said Monday.

The most important work Dr. King did was the work he did in the last three to five years of his life. Yet we hear almost nothing about it in our mass media. Why? Because it concerned confronting the inequalities built into unfettered capitalism, and the drive for empire built on exploitation that led America into the Vietnam War. Talking about these things bothers the conservatives that own and run our traditional media outlets.
