On Thursday morning, Jane wrote about House GOP’s unanimous refusal to back the Obama economic stimulus plan:

They looked like a bunch of petulant, narcissistic brats and did a nice job of making Obama appear measured and statesmanlike by comparison.

But everyone knew that was coming, and their votes weren’t needed. It was more troubling that few Democrats stepped out to defend the bill.  . . . Obama has mobility right now because his approval numbers are solid. If they start to slip in a relentless GOP onslaught that the Democrats won’t answer, and people start to associate their own personal struggles with what they hear in the zombie lies, those numbers won’t hold.

I don’t know if any Dems are starting to show up on the cable TV chatter, but with Senate debate on the bill about to begin, the cavalry is approaching from a different angle.  A coalition of progressive groups — MoveOn.org, Americans United for Change, and the AFSCME and SEIU labor unions — has announced state-specific TV ads urging Republican senators to support the bill, along with a radio ad tying GOP opponents to Rush Limbaugh.

And lest you think the Obama administration is just passively standing by, they’re rolling out job numbers to support the nominally independent TV ad campaign, and tapping their email list to build grassroots support via house parties next week.

Still, it might be a good idea for President Obama to do what Digby says, and roll out the bully pulpit.  No sense keeping your powder dry; this is the battle you came to fight.
