I was initially disappointed that the RNC chose Michael Steele as its new chair when all the other candidates were so much more insane, or incompetent, or both. Of all of them, Steele probably had the best understanding of just how far down the toilet the Republican brand is, and why:
"’I've got an ‘R’ here, a scarlet letter,’" said Steele of his party affiliation. "’If this race is about Republicans and Democrats, I lose.’"
Despite having been recruited to run for the Senate by President Bush and key Republican leaders eager to improve the party’s performance among African-American voters, Steele separated himself rhetorically from many central aspects of the Bush administration’s record. He called the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina "’a monumental failure,’" saying, "’We became so powerful in our ivory towers, in our gated communities. We forgot that there are poor people.’"
(…)
[Steele] also rapped the administration for its handling of Iraq….
"People want an honest assessment from the administration," Steele told Milbank, "and they want to hear the administration admit … it didn’t work, so we’re going to try a Plan B."
But for all that he’s right about, his record reveals him to be just another unscrupulous, two-faced, social-conservative idiot Republican. He bused in homeless people from Philly to hand out phony Democratic sample ballots with his name on them. He talked out of both sides of his mouth about Obama. And he compared stem cell research to slavery and the Holocaust. And that’s just for starters.
Better yet, the issues where he is right, like Iraq, poverty and racism (sometimes), are precisely the issues where the Republican party is going to completely ignore him. If we’re really lucky, he might even vent his frustration publicly like he did in 2006. Just imagine Steele going ballistic the next time the Southern Strategy resurfaces. I would sell my left nut for a chance to write an "Even The RNC Chair Thinks Republicans Are Racist Bastards" post, and I’m not alone (although I will be after I sell my left nut).
Oh, and that time he got busy in a Burger King bathroom will really hurt him with the religious right. I just don’t think "Operation: Racists… Not" is going to work out.

About Firedoglake
OT Already: Where’s SC? I was going to remind him about Bill Moyers, just coming on. First topic = Obama & Afghanistan. We’ll see. Sorry, Eli
I meant SD….
It’s a new record!
Rachel Maddow, what a Hoot.
Tweety referred to Steele as a “moderate” Republican over, and over, and over today.
Go Sarah!
Thanks….;)
That’s definitely the pose he uses. But as RNC Chair, it’s probably not going to buy him much if the party members are still acting like bigoted right-wing lunatics.
You rang? Comes on at 10 here so I gots an hour.
Thanks. Left me manners in the other room.
707
When you see the first part, keep the folks in mind for a Lake book discussion.
Ok Eli, you got me.
I clicked through on the BK bathroom link, thinking it was real, and you got me.
Good one, though. He looks just like him!
I’m certain, however I’m the only one here that actually has that song on their Ipod.
Alright Mr. Hipster, bonus points if you’re down with “Tie The Knot” from that same CD.
OK, On T. I remember Steele making some really insane comments last summer, I think it was. Matter o’ fact I believe it was a topic of discussion here. Anyhoo, it’s going to be very interesting to see what the AA community here says. I would imagine the Sunday morning talk shows on my community radio station will be all over it. AA public affairs 8 – 12 every Sunday. Really cool.
are they so sure rank and file racist rethugs are going to pay any attention to him whatsoever?
He barely beat a guy (Katon Dawson) who, until at least last summer, belonged to an All-White™ Country Club for as many as 12 years.
I am so glad the Republicans are advancing the ball.
Never even heard of “Tie The Knot”, but yes, the Humpty Dance *is* on my iPod. It’s one of my favorites.
LOL. I think the latest thing I’ve got is Steppenwolf’s Monster. On a cassette for my Walkman. Talk about Ludite.
They’ll listen to him when he says that stem cells or abortion are Just Like The Holocaust. But when he tells them that they need to stop acting like bigoted assholes or they’ll scare the non-crazy people away, he’ll be talking to the hand.
He’ll give them a minority spokesman to give them a thin patina of not-racism, but hardly anyone will buy it. Mel Martinez didn’t exactly help them with the Latino vote, after all.
I’ll still thinkin’ the got the vote count backwards. I simply cannot believe that many Rethugs have gotten a glimpse of the writing on the wall. Or even know where the wall is.
I really wanted it to be Blackwell or Saltsman. Not only are they both clueless right-wing assholes, but they both have heavy symbolic baggage – Blackwell with his Ohio ‘04 voting suppression efforts, and Saltsman with his Amusing Novelty CD.
I think Martinez didn’t have a clue as to what was expected of him. His favourable numbers have never gotten out of the tank. When he deigns to come down here he hangs with his rich buddies/cronies for a bit and goes back to deecee.
They are playing match-up, and playing it very badly.
Steele is a lightweight thinker, and will actually have very little to do with the direction of the party. But as a ‘no-longer-candidate’ for public office, the stink of the Maryland Senate race against Cardin will fade. That was a scurrilous candidacy.
Why couldn’t they have chosen Alan Keyes or Clarence Thomas? Those are my two favorite completely nutzoid blacks.
In terms of outreach or messaging, I doubt much more was expected of him than to simply *be* Hispanic. I reckon Steele will have similar responsibilities.
I was sure hoping, never considered Steele having a chance. Gives us one more thing to watch. I’m beginning to like the idea of a 90 day or less election season like in some European countries. But then I’d have to find another hobby. Damn, why can’t anything be simple?
I’m not sure even death could pry Thomas off the Supreme Court, but Keyes is probably too batshit even for Republicans.
Is there actually any other kind of Republican?
But what I really wanna to know is if he can – scream like Dean.
At will that is, not just when he’s being chased out of an RNC meeting in Pulaski, Tennessee…….
Probably not, but there are certainly Republicans who pose as such.
Thomas stepping down from the bench to take RNC chair? I know all his neurons aren’t firing in sequence but that would qualify him for the men in white coats.
I agree.
I don’t think he would leave SCOTUS for anything less than POTUS.
Uh, no they won’t.
This whole exercise was one colossal waste of time.
The events of the last few days have shown us who runs the Republican Party, and if you really think Rush’s followers are going to do what a Black man says to do, you’re just as crazy as they are.
No, thankfully the Republicans are the party of Rush and Bible Spice of Alaska now, and I couldn’t be happier.
Clarence Thomas? You jest, eCAHN – that guy is just one whiny guy. I do not understand him at all.
As if anyone needed additional evidence that Republicans just don’t get it. Showcasing an occasional non-white Republican isn’t going to fool anyone, it is ACTIONS that matter. When the GOP starts working on behalf of the entire country instead of just the rich we’ll know they’re sincere about reforming their party. I’m not holding my breath.
Since the 1940’s there’s a gool ol’ boys club in my town. It’s a fishing/yachting club. The club pays a token lease payment for prime riverfront city property and 40 boatslips. The members are the old boy power brokers of the town. Wealthy lawyers, doctors, bankers, developers, heirs… The new mayor has commenced an investigation. The city commission approved a $20K fee for an attorney. There are no black or female members. One of our city commissioners is married to a black man. He said that he loves to fish and would like to join the club. Wonders what the dues are. There’s a waiting list and you have to be invited.
Oh yeah, I know. Just a whimsical wish.
there’s also that guy in California who destroyed the schools and the university system.. Ward Connolly.
OT again: The Moyers panel on Afghanistan very pessimistic…2 great authors. If you don’t get to see it, it will be on line. Check it out, please.
.
Trust me, that song is nowhere near the “latest thing”; I think it was out in the late 80’s- early 90’s, but I get your point.
i added two words to reflect who the r’s actually represent.
I think anybody wanting to be POTUS is qualified for the men in white coats. You gotta be nuts to want to put yerself under that kinda stress for 4-8 years. Like RonD said earlier, I like tranquility and good company.
As I said, just a whimsical wish.
I actually think I understand Thomas. He seems to be a simple self-hating black. He has not only turned his back on his race, as evidenced by his marriage to a white woman (I know, there are many reasons why that could happen, but it’s part of a larger picture in Thomas’s case), but also to all the things that made him successful, esp. affirmative action. And for the “hate” part of self-hate, while I didn’t read his book, I saw him interviewed on cspan and it is transparent that he is consumed with hate and resentment.
Well said.
Will Rush sing the magic negro song? Steele is mucking up Rush’s ballgame.
Don’t you ever want to be able to send a grown man in a suit with a six-figure salary scurrying for a cheeseburger or PB&J sandwich any time you feel like it?
Ward Connerly was/is an ideologue, whereas Steele and Blackwell are charlatans, opportunists, hacks.
Connerly is no a less whackjob, but he really believes. No less sad, perhaps more in fact.
Speaking on Connolly, do you know if his crap passed in CO?
Caught most of it. It’s exactly what I would have said (with less credentials, of course) if I had been the interviewee. So, of course, I thought it was brilliant.
I didn’t know that the Italian guy was the originator of bombing them into submission theory, so that factoid was worth the time. But I’ve done a lot of reading on the subject, and the pause, then: I can’t think of a single time that it’s worked, was exactly the conclusion I’d come to.
Yes he is a mean and hateful, bigoted RV driving Uncle Tom.
Does this remind anyone of the scene in Blazing Saddles where Cleavon Little arrives in an all white town as sheriff?
The Southern Strategy was the exploitation of racism by calling it something else. I can imagine the cognitive dissonance of many a good ole boy when they find out that the head of their party is African-American.
Nebraska passed, Colorado did not, but progressives prevailed there only by a tiny tiny margin. That man is evil trouble, ideologue or not.
Early 70s. Full of VN anti-war songs. LOL.
He did about as well with RNC chair voting as he did running for Gov. of Ohio; that is to say he was trounced!
This will leave him more time to deal with the criminal charges that will eventually come from the aforementioned vote stealing in Ohio from 2004.
Thanks for the shorter eCAHN. *g*
Yep.
Clarence Thomas is pretty much unqualified for any job which doesn’t involve Scalia telling him what to think and do.
Glad you saw it…both so articulate and likely tragic. The historical content, esp. VietNam was fascinating. Thanks for your comments.
Thanks for jarring that memory. This is exactly like that Blazing Saddles bit.
You would be correct, sir!
Wasn’t Alan Keyes available?
If *Ken Blackwell* couldn’t win this thing, what hope would Alan Keyes have?
they probably need him to carpet bag to another state somewhere, once again.
I couldn’t do it. Either way. I couldn’t ask or expect anyone to do that for me nor could I allow myself to perform that service.
’scuse me while ah whip dis out
I think that was a big part of the appeal of the job for Dubya, that he got to order around and humiliate people much smarter than him. He even liked to brag about how he, the C-student, was ordering around the PhD eggheads.
Such a small, insecure man.
Think I picked up my info on Afghanistan from juancole & antiwar. Also, War Nerd from exiledonline. That cite used to be hosted in Russia but Putin busted them out, so their archives are discontinuous. War Nerd, aka Gary Brecher, is the best and most irreverent war analyst I’ve ever read. He did a great post on the Pashtuns, which I can no longer find online.
Having constructed an hypothesis on Afghanistan a year or two ago, it has stood up to the stress tests since then. It’s the same hypothesis you heard tonight.
Speaking of Scalia, did anyone notice him at the inauguration? He is huge – looks like someone blew him up with a bicycle pump.
Tequila and good company ain’t bad, either.
Thanks. CO sure has changed since I lived there in the early 80s. Denver was very progressive.
Looks like you owe eCAHN a drink. Personally, I’d have preferred to see somebody like Gary Coleman, although I don’t recall if he has a party affiliation, despite throwing his hat in the ring (with everyone else) to replace Davis as governor of California.
Iknow I am having this conversation almost with myself ;), now I am falling in love with the Armenian telling us what is wrong here. What a lovely man.
There is actually a Wired story about nerds in Afghanistan.
Possibly worth it solely for the phrase “Jalalabad Fab Lab”.
I think Gary’s a biter.
Which speaks well of you.
Does all of this mean we’ll be deprived of seeing Steele show his full-on-nut-job act on Bill Maher’s program now?
Apparently Scalia has been hitting the all-you-can-eat buffet circuit with Jessica Simpson.
how could such a man have any future beyond flunking out of prep school and inheriting the family business? Oh, ok, I guess that part isn’t really a big mystery.
Sociopath Dubya enjoyed pointing that out to children. Hey kid! Guess which one of us was the C student.
all of him or just his head?
707. Can’t get near the stuff since a night many moons ago.
does POTUS do PUTS?
Very funny. But they seem to be peace nerds, whereas Gary Brecher is a war nerd.
Here’s a good sample. One of his posts on Gaza.
Rumor has it so was Ken Mehlman.
Drink and goof off and don’t study, and maybe *you* can be President someday!
(Also, make sure your old man becomes President first)
It would be good to be King! (For a week or two, then they’d start talkin’ about deficits & recessions and I’d give the job back.)
Failing upward.
All and I do mean all. Looked like a bear with glasses.
I’d be willing to bet Scalia’s back is hairier.
Who knew ‘ideologue’ was so perfectly interchangeable with ‘asshole’?
Cheery!
Tried all that. Didn’t work. Maybe it was the Daddy President part I screwed up on.
Is that more depressing? Or infuriating? I do like it that W is such a family embarrasment.
I didn’t drink, but I did goof off and didn’t study much. I guess the drinking is an essential requirement. Or maybe it’s the blow…
Is this Steele related to Shelby Steele? Just wondering.
The problem is that Connerly is what could charitably be described as a “movement-asshole,” and that would add a whole nuther layer to an already unsteady constellation of whackjobbery.
So I left it at ‘ideologue’.
could we all send him pic-a-nic baskets?
Irreverant to the nth degree. Goes out of his way to slay every sacred dragon.
No, Danielle.
GOP Parties With Hookers And Blow As Gustaf Blows

He sounds very unserious.
Or the weed. Yes, siree, accounting class. Blitzed. What’s a debit? That anything like a cubit?
Oop, Moyers on. bbl.
While knowing more than the next hundred “experts” combined.
Super Bowl Sunday already happened: the Cardin all beat the RNC Steeler.
lol
So you’re the one that came up with the t shirt “One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Floor!
you mean all those people telling me that drinking was *required* for any type of liberal arts degree were maybe not telling the truth?
Hell, I thought I had a double major….
In Connerly’s case (and the case of most true-believer rethugs), reality is something that can be readily sacrificed (along with compassion and human decency) on the altar of political orthodoxy.. especially if you’re a token minority or an educated guy (like the neocons) trying to find acceptance among the brutes.
That and the frocks. He do love a costume.
Oh, like those quasi-military Members Only jackets. I’m sure he’s keeping those.
Eli !
You know this Chair is Fool’s Paradise when even Jindal runs away from it !
That’s funny…I always sort of wondered what he thought about wearing a suit all the time…Liked playing dress up, I guess.
Petro!
I think Jindal realizes that RNC Chair is not exactly a path to the presidency, and he’s better off as a governor.
If Jindal thinks he has a chance at being the Repug nominee, he’s an even bigger fool than I thought.
Jindal’s dominant aspiration (aka delusion) is to be the Republican nominee for president. RNC chair would not be a suitable platform from which to launch a bid. Even if it was, exorcising the party demons would eat up all his time.
Dang, I owe you a drink.
earlofhuntingdon’s diary is now on the front page – david brooks paints obama in his favorite bush colors
If Plumber Joe decides to stick with journalism (hear that, Pulitzer committee?), Jindal might be Caribou Barbie’s running mate in ‘12.
Liked the pix of him departing DC in a jacket embossed with a huge presnitial seal. Pickles is gonna have to pry that stuff from his cold dead hands.
My fave was the dress cowboy boots with the seal.
If that happens, Perot might feel emboldened to run in 2012.
I so want to do the HUMTY, but I’m 63 an it wood look funny.
Dave
Viet Vet
Awwww, he probably likes being almost a W neighbor.
You could always just use words that don’t mean nothin’, like loopid.
Ghouliani & teh Mittster both criticizing PBO today … I guess the Pres is doing something right.
Or “compassionate conservatism”.
Yeah. She’s all rhetoric and no thought. I’m just curious when Obama’s spending spree does not get us out of this mess who is she then going to blame when she can’t blame Bush? CNBC was one of Obama’s loudest cheerleaders. He’s supposedly bright enough to get the economy out of Bush’s mess and was sold to as the instant cure. Despite that she’ll say Bush screwed up the economy as of Jan 20 2009, it’s Obama’s to fix. Why do I feel that he’ll do only window dressing and claim as a structural fix?
I’m just curious why do you have to denigrate somebody who has a different political opinion than yours?
I don’t know what CNBC you watch, but the one I get couldn’t have been more in the tank for Republicans, and I watch it off and on every business day.
And doesn’t
Kinda contradict
Agree or not with her opinions, to say a Rhodes Scholar lacks “thought” just doesn’t hold water.
A key point Dems should keep repeating: there is ZERO BLACK GOP Congressmen.
Zero GOP Blacks in Congress.
All things being equal, the nation is 13% black, that would be 177(13%) = 23 Black gop if the parties were truly color blind.
That said: What’s up with the ONE BLACK DEM in the Senate? The house of elites for sure.
