Suzanne, sorry you aren’t feeling much better but I know you will soon. Hope you got something to treat it with at least. Have you eaten that chicken soup yet?
Hey,Suzanne. I can never hear the music, but I know it’s good.
You introduced Duffy to us awhile ago. She’d just done SNL? with her song “Mercy”. So I biught her cd. She’s awesome all throughout!!
The song I’d love to link tonight is the last song on her cd “Rockferry”. My new anthem as I call our state senate to try and fix the horrible Resolution 8602 2009-10 that they passed to support Israel’s war crimes.
Armed with this song a woman can do anything!!!
Distant Dreamer, Duffy, Rockferry.
Would you, could you or someone link? I’m a dial-up non-computer tech disaster.
The world needs this song.
Wow finished my Environmental review by the deadline today after 5 weeks od gathering 25 years of data, sifting, organizing and refernecing. Sleep tonight.

Keyboards, accordian and I imagine a harpmonica… the church is rockin tonight with some travelin music. Obama may be rockin with us. Thr freedon train is rollin.
my local news showed some footage from the ice storm in arkansas. gonna take a while to get power going again – and since es is out in the country, i fear it may be even longer.
when he mentioned maybe having to move, i wrote this big long letter on what a nice place it is here and how i have plenty of room on the lower level until he figured out what he wanted to do. i didn’t send it. if he’s in a bind, pass it on.
nite, and sweet dreams to everyone. over half of my county lost power, county next to me 98%, i was lucky. i bitched about them clearing a 30′ right of way through our area, but if they hadn’t i would be without power right now…harumph, you don’t know how i hate admitting that. they took down some trees alright….but i have power. kinda hard to admit it has a purpose.
nite, dream of spring. and what you will do with it.
Thank you for “Across the Universe”.
We had the same issues with the 30′ strip. Used to loose power every heavy wind. Often for days because we’re in a “rural, low impact” area.
I, too, am liking it. Rarely lose power now. Fuck trees!!! No,teasing, just being goofy!.But in our neck of the woods trees fall down a lot. Great for firewood. Scary for storms.
Suz, i’d never heard of the Subdudes. I know, I’m deprived. Love them!
Shoot, i wasn’t sure who Queen was until 1992. Then I just loved them, got all their music and was so so sad to find that Freddy Mercury had died the previous year.
Uhmm…I think that might be perceived as violent/hostile/cannibal kind of stuff.
But I might still be suffering from Overt Political Correctness Disorder.
I had dinner at dittodad’s house. I don’t normally do this. i try to avoid talking politics at ALL costs but I had a couple glasses of wine and am SO pissed off about how crooks have run our country into the ground. Gad, we went at it for an hour.
Glad to see you are once again your feisty self. Gotta go blow some snow with my snow blower, or Ms ET will not make it up the driveway.
But also gotta say it was a real rush covering Mark Begich’s first Alaska press conference sorta at firedoglake this afternoon. We fought so hard to get Ted outta there.
I started challenging him on his labels. I told him the party had moved away fiscal conservatism. we really got into the iraq war. He was going all over the place, but I’d bring him back around and not allow him to change the subject (vietnam). It was challenging, and I started to enjoy the fight. He was trying to move me onto topics I didn’t know much about but I’d come back.
I got him to come around on gitmo a little.
I challenged said dittohead to name one democrat he liked and one republican he didn’t. He came up with Orrin Hatch (wishy washy), Phil Gramm (but he’s gone) and Dick Armey for Rs he didn’t like. He could not name one dem he liked. He kept naming all the ones he didn’t like. telling me the dirt on all of them, like goopers never did anything wrong.
I let him have it with the McCain temper and veterans voting record. He likes Palin and called Bush “poor thing” very sincerely!
Suze, I also tried to get through to him that not everyone in the country can be a CEO. He told me about a study that says more conservatives than liberals contribute to charity. I told him about The Bush Family Reading Program for Katrina and how nice it is that they got a tax write off while keeping it all in the family.
I schooled him big time on habeas corpus and warrantless wiretapping. He’s hugely paranoid about his privacy, so I know that landed.
He’s already hanging the market’s performance on Obama. I told him not to watch Fox News any more. America voted for change. He was really pissed about Obama’s “I won” remark.
Obama is starting to sound in control, confident and buckled down to getting work done. He gave the republicans a hand and they spit on it. Unfucking believable. The stim pac vote was a shocker. No whale killing our Ocean mammals need us to clean up the Oceans and stop the killin. Time to regulate the food and drug industry. Put people above profits. O hear character coming out of the White House…it is time to Rawk America the Beautiful from sea to shining sea. Let’s put the beautiful back in America.
Let’s put the heart back. Obama may be “killin then with kindness” as my grandmother used to say.
thanks, openhope. came in from moving almost a foot of fresh snow to try to thaw my fingers. plus five F. No wind.
got the gloves up on the ridge of the wood stove.
Mark Begich will be fine. People outside Alaska need to realize that you can’t be elected dogcatcher in Alaska unless you support the opening of ANWR for oil development. He respects science, greened Anchorage like you can hardly believe while he was Mayor.
Oh my god, did you see those pictures of Bush looking like a crying,in-big-trouble baby? I jut saw them today…can’t remember which site. Crooksandliars?FDL?
If he feels like Bush is a “poor thing”, those photos of him losing it with a trembling chin will win your argument. Or re-enforce the “poor Georgie” mantra.
They’re priceless!!!
he loves the jerk. I still cannot wrap my head around that. I think I left the fold emotionally, finally, when I discovered both my parents listen to the jerk. Is politics about hating other people?
A I remember it was a speech amongst top Repubs, daughters,Cheneys…He ended his speec and walked off stage. Then was required to re-enter for applause. Coming back into the room he was visibly losing it. Blubber factor.
Maybe ameriblog had it? It’s SO going to surface in the next 12 hours!!!
““As a little boy growing up in this town, this is awesome,” said Steele, the most moderate candidate in the field and considered an outsider because he’s not a committee member.
In a brief acceptance speech, the new GOP chairman struck a tone of inclusiveness.”
Moderate? Inclusinveness? Sounds like the new head Gooper isn’t singing from the same hymnal as actual party leaders John Boehner and Rush Limbaugh. He’ll learn…”
But I wimped out on the “Bad Video YouTube Challenge” to neurophius. I am so ashamed.
But he cheated, and brought in Dr. McCoy. What is a lurk supposed to do?
He said all of that but it sounded like he was talking in code to me. At least from the sound bites on Air America. Words meant for print and nothing else.
Wouldn’t want to be him.
The volcano hasn’t erupted yet, but the volcano observatory web site has. People outside of Alaska never paid this much attention to our eruptions before Palin become an icon. Fucking weird how things work sometimes, eh…..?
Things have been sucking so much around here for long enough that if something big doesn’t blow soon to equalize the sucking, there might actually end up being a warp in the space-time continuum.
There’s no smooth way to say this, so I will just say it – nobody has better ‘Black chick backing vocals” than Cocker, with the possible exception of Macy Gray.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Herbert today. Ms. Collins is concerned. She’s addressing a problem: “TV In Peril. Is Nothing Sacred?” She has marching orders for us: Shape up people. It’s post-inauguration now. It’s all about the issues. And one issue at hand is every American’s God-given right to television reception. Mr. Herbert writes about “A Crazy Dream,” and says a documentary about the women’s peace movement in Liberia spotlights the achievement of ordinary people who courageously intervene in their own fate.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got challah French toast with a bit of cinnamon and warm maple syrup or, if you prefer, spiced peach sauce. We’re back down with temps hovering around freezing again. This yo-yo weather is getting tiresome. I’m off to get another cup of tea and start the day’s work. Have a great day.
I’m not at all upset with the Republicans for voting against Obama’s stimulus package. They are (or claim to be) true believers in Reaganomics and took a principled stand on the bailout. Obama was the one who compromised his economic principles for the sake of expediency, and it expedited nothing. His error will cost future generations $300B in lost tax revenue. I hope tat lesson will be will be well learned.
wigwam, do you think it’s possible that obama wasn’t so much compromising as doing what his economic advisors (for example, summers) told him was the best plan?
Sigh. Yes. I hope this all works out for Hartmarx because the DH only wears their suits. He’s active in his union and makes a very big point of only wearing US made clothing and shoes. We make the trek to Rochester (or to their outlet store downstate) a couple of times a year so that he can rotate something new in and something old OUT. But a big part of the problem, frankly, is what Levi’s Dockers did to men’s business clothing habits in the early 1990s with the whole ‘business casual wear our Docker pants’ campaign. They convinced so many businesses to offer ‘casual Friday’ that turned into ‘casual everyday’ that the men’s suit business just suffered so much, except in places like New York City. it is too bad.
I can’t tell. Research shows that tax cuts have relatively low leverage in terms of stimulating the economy, and we’ve heard that the reason for the relatively large tax cuts was to appease the Republicans. But it might well be that Summers wanted them. As Krugman noted:
[U]nder Bush, financial policy consisted of Wall Street types cutting sweet deals, at taxpayer expense, for Wall Street types. Under Obama, it’s precisely the reverse.
I know it’s hard to justify $1000 jackets and $1500 suits,
but seeing any kind of manufacturing disappear is awful.
And it’s not as if the workers are going to find anything
remotely similar in pay or benefits.
Well, my husband wears his suits once a week, every week, for several years, so from a per wearing cost standpoint, it’s not too bad. But this is what making a man’s suit costs – a good suit takes a lot of steps and a lot of different inputs (fabrics, interfacings, stiffeners, buttons, thread, zippers, etc. etc. ). These folks are skilled workers. For us it does come down to whether we feel it is ok to pay less and buy a suit at JC Penneys which has been made by people making pennies an hour, have no benefits, are fed badly and many times are under the age of 14…or if we pay what it costs to get a good suit made in the USA. People forget that traditionally, the cost of clothing was measured in ‘a day’s wages’. A man’s shirt, for example, cost a day’s wages.
it’s just that obama has been talking up tax cuts before now in fact they were a center piece of his economic plan before election day. or at least that is what it looked like to me – for example see comments in this thread, esp here, here and here.
also i expect summers to take the neoliberal line that tax cuts are good because they provide temp stimulus but don’t distort the economy as much as other spending (that NOT what i think).
toby, i’m not sorry to see the business suit become less required as working attire. it’s been a social signifier to identify who’s white collar and who’s blue collar – and people who wear suits are supposed to get more respect.
on the other hand, i hope that any good union shop making clothes can stay in business. i was very sad when the company i bought my jeans from shut down their union shop because people wouldn’t pay the extra 5$ the jeans cost to treat employees decently.
imo it’s more about the race to the bottom and less about changing fashion. slave labor is just cheaper.
Yes..and no. If you look at pictures from the 1920s through the 40s, every man had at least one suit. If you look at pictures taken of people lined up in California in the 30s to get peapicking jobs, you will see farmers from Iowa wearing their suit coats and dress hats over their farm overalls. Every man had at least one suit – and that was his best dress and was worn every Sunday, every wedding and funeral, etc. Only the poorest of the poor did not have one set of ‘Sunday best’. Now, ‘Sunday best’ is a whole other deal. Think of it: If all the people who went to church still dressed for church, how many more suits would be bought and worn in this country. No matter what someone did for their living, they would have one suit. In the black community, people still dress for church and it shows.
As I understood Obama’s tax cuts, they were going to be directed to the middle class and would be offset by tax increases (or the expiration of tax cuts) on the rich. And none of that is in this plan.
i agree the tax cuts being proposed now seem quite different than the revenue neutral campaign tax cuts. my only point is that in both cases, tax cuts of some kind figured centrally in the “solution”

somebody tell me everything’s going to be OK.
the country’s in the crapper and dittoheads can only whine about not being in charge.
Things have been sucking so much around here for long enough that if something big doesn’t blow soon to equalize the sucking, there might actually end up being a warp in the space-time continuum.
OMG Suz where did that come from? I could only stomach 1:14 of it…surprised I lasted that long.

There’s no smooth way to say this, so I will just say it – nobody has better ‘Black chick backing vocals” than Cocker, with the possible exception of Macy Gray.
Nice one.

Night Suz, night all

Whenever I see or hear Joe Cocker, I think of John Belushi’s Try with a little help from my friends….

I tried to post that, but the copyright cops snagged it pretty quickly.

Morning folks; it’s not too bad in Upstate NY this morning, cloudy but too cold.
Morning, cloudy, humid and wintery in montreal.
Here they are.
The Bush Boom continues across upstate NY.
good morning all.
wigwam, do you think it’s possible that obama wasn’t so much compromising as doing what his economic advisors (for example, summers) told him was the best plan?
Sigh.
I know it’s hard to justify $1000 jackets and $1500 suits,
but seeing any kind of manufacturing disappear is awful.
And it’s not as if the workers are going to find anything
remotely similar in pay or benefits.
And in the U.S. (and the U.S. only), when you lose your job, you lose your healthcare.
$1500 times 250 working days per year is $375,000 per year, i.e., roughly presidential wages. Okay.
it’s just that obama has been talking up tax cuts before now in fact they were a center piece of his economic plan before election day. or at least that is what it looked like to me – for example see comments in this thread, esp here, here and here.
also i expect summers to take the neoliberal line that tax cuts are good because they provide temp stimulus but don’t distort the economy as much as other spending (that NOT what i think).
OK, everyone…get your coffee cups and drag your chairs upstairs: Miss Christy is here!!
toby, i’m not sorry to see the business suit become less required as working attire. it’s been a social signifier to identify who’s white collar and who’s blue collar – and people who wear suits are supposed to get more respect.
on the other hand, i hope that any good union shop making clothes can stay in business. i was very sad when the company i bought my jeans from shut down their union shop because people wouldn’t pay the extra 5$ the jeans cost to treat employees decently.
imo it’s more about the race to the bottom and less about changing fashion. slave labor is just cheaper.
And none of that is in this plan.
my issue isn’t with having one “best” suit – it’s the divide that comes when it is required business dress.
i agree the tax cuts being proposed now seem quite different than the revenue neutral campaign tax cuts. my only point is that in both cases, tax cuts of some kind figured centrally in the “solution”
