Brand new Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn is not the savior he’d like us to believe him to be–although he’s clearly a GooGoo legend in his own mind.

His successful campaign–at once naive and deceitful–to decrease the size of the Illinois General Assembly led to Thursday’s humiliation of the State of Illinois. Reducing the General Assembly’s size directly resulted in vesting almost unlimited legislative power in just five Illinois politicians: The Democratic and Republican leaders of the House and Senate and the Governor.

This has been a disaster for Illinois, and Quinn’s at least partially responsible for it. That he profits personally and politically by taking over for the discredited governor his activities helped create is high irony.

This is my favourite story of yesterday.

Leaders of Turkey and Israel Clash at Davos Panel

“Mr. Peres, you are older than me,” he said. “Your voice comes out in a very high tone. And the high tone of your voice has to do with a guilty conscience. My voice, however, will not come out in the same tone.”

Resisting efforts by Mr. Ignatius to end the session, Mr. Erdogan continued, saying to Mr. Peres, “When it comes to killing, you know well how to kill.”

How about that. A world leader with the balls to stand up to Israel. Now, if Turkey would only come to grips with the Armenian genocide.

Eric Cantor to write strongly-worded letter.

Great. Obama’s answer to that latter should be the same as how Joe The Biden answered that reporter’s question in 2004: “Who gives a shit?” That letter should be at the very top of Obama’s “ignore” pile.

Hey, am I live blogging the Casey Anthony thing today? It starts at 8:30, so I imagine FDL wuill be pretty empty for awhile. Unless I’m live blogging. Am I live blogging?

well, at least Bruce is going to be tehre for a little bit. as you know, I’m from the Garden state. Bruce seems a little bit less popular down here. I stopped following the case, really. I checked the paper this morning, though, it’s some defense motion. They want to go out to the area where that poor girl’s rteamins were found and inspect it. And they want to have the prosecutor kicked off the case. All so sad and a media circus.

I can rebut Krugman’s third point based on what Ian Welsh posted at this very website. K’s third point is that Obama must not repeat Clinton’s mistake of waiting too long to offer health care legislation because once the economy begins to recover it will be too late. Not to worry! There’s not gonna be a recovery in a year, two years and anytime in the future as far ahead as we can see. Problem solved! Hells bells, if I’m reading Ian correctly, conditions worse than Hoover’s depression are about to become our new way of life. Thanks to Naomi Klein we know what a hand our own Chicago school boys had in helping Russia destroy itself. I’m certain they will put that experience to good use moving the U.S. into our new, horribly foreshortened future.

Hi BT and Puppies.

Please forgive me. I suffer from cabin fever, and the malady has not only dented my already deficient brainpower, but apparently set my judgement dial askew as well.

So I shall just get it out there with the morning trash-talk in an exorcism of the most shameful sort.

I do believe some newly blessed super-mom out in CA has invented the mother of all stimulus packages. Does she now qualify for separate and equal rewards for each and every member of all her various broods? And with the proud dad apparently stationed/contracted in Iraq, presumably under less than totally safe circumstances, heaven help me. I do believe I might not be the only less-than-stellar specimen of our species after all.

My joy in hearing of the fertility-treatment-enhanced arrival of octuplets to join their six pre-existing stairstep siblings, and the family’s apparent conquest of the equivalent of a complete and fully staffed, personal minihospital is. somewhat. tempered. I wonder if all single-births are subject to an equivalent level of attention and tender care in California’s, and our nation’s faltering economy.

Has the whole country gone insane, or is it just me?! I still FEEL compassion. Honest. I really really do. But, Good Dog Amighty!?!

One of the unconscious reasons for the popularity of places like Disneyworld/land is because it provides the experience to visitors of what our communities used to be like. Most of urban America has been so degraded by poor land use planning and a monopoly of the private automobile that visitors to “theme” parks long for a sense of community that pre WWII urban environments once provided.
