Shelters are opening in towns around here for people w/o power.
The mayor told us that all able-bodied people have to go out and chip away at their gutters on the street, because they’re full of ice and there’s nowhere for the rain to go, which then ices the streets.

Vermont Castings. Same brand as I had before. Old stove was probably about 20 years old. Several pieces had broken off, probably metal fatigue, especially since I regularly took it from 50 degrees to full blast within a short period when I came up to a cold house in the winter. It would have cost half of a new stove to fix the old one, so I antied up. Went up a size too. As it was new, and you are supposed to break them in gradually, I have yet to burn it at full bore.

So Suzanne, the last flu shot I got was in 2001, after the anthrax attacks. Thought that I should lower the probability of getting any infection, so I wouldn’t have to worry about anthrax. NYC was giving free shots, and when I went I also got a free tetnus, hepatitus, and pneumonia vaccination (that one being good for the rest of my life). I felt absolutely invulnerable walking out of the clinic.

What’s happening to print media and the people who work in it is really sad. I got a notice yesterday that the only magazine I’ve subscribed to in recent years ceased publication with the last issue. Circulation of 350,000, 12 yrs old, the publisher didn’t want to continue, and another pub could not be found. Sad.

On a personal note, my recent pleasant visit from my cousin, who lives about 2000 miles away, was made possible by his recent dis-employment. I was able to spend the day playing tourist with him at the Alamo and Mission San Jose because I’ve been unemployed since November also.

Point of special irony -he had had to do some layoffs himself at the small regional paper he worked at – until Monday after Thanksgiving thought he was reasonably safe: he was the on-line managing editor.

So, he decided now was a good time to take that cross-country trip he’d never had time for before. Lookng on the bright side!
