When I was a teenager, I bought a pair of lace-up, comfortable shoes to wear with jeans. So naturally my mom and her sister called them “lesbian shoes” and tried to shame me out of wearing them.

I had lunch today with a woman who kinda sorta followed me in my Wall St. job. She was the only economist laid off at U.S. Credit Suisse. She did point out that they now put women in charge in Iceland, but did not mention that the PM is gay.

Icelands banks failed the currency is going down and they had a Conservative in charge.
Sure we all know that the GOP plan is stop Obama but if nothing is done the economy will fail now not 4 years from now.
The GOP is owning fighting the Stimulus. The GOP owns the Rep as the Business Party. Tax Cuts don’t help if you don’t have an income.
There will be Congressmen and Senators up for election before Obama runs for reelection.
And if the Stimulus fails Voters will be angry. Voters in bad economic times tend to knock out incumbents somehow I think probusiness GOPers will get the boot.
Banks after all got billions, Corporations are getting tax breaks, the Big Three have to beg, the Stimulus has to Compromise.

I can’t remember how old I was when I learned about homosexuality. I think it was sometime late HS, early college, when all knowledge of sexual stuff came flooding in. I wasn’t particularly sheltered, just the normal 1950s childhood.

If you look at the European economies that were doing really well, developing fast like Iceland, Ireland, the UK, and Norway, they have all been burned badly by the downturn. Asia is the same story. China was exploding economically now it’s just worried about exploding.

Our whole banking system in this country needs to be nationalized and reset. This would not only help us but it would serve as a model for other countries to reset their systems.

The only problem is that short of a depression I don’t see Obama and his Establishment crowd of economic goofs doing this. Obama signed off on the mindless $700 billion Paulson bailout. Now we have this dumb watered down poorly thought through stimulus. There is a pattern developing here, folks, and it is not a pretty one.

someone in the failed state of Iceland needs to build a monument to the outgoing conservative thug of a PM… so that all ms be reminded forevermore the consequences of entrusting a nation’s governance to wingnut conservative crony capitalists. Let this be a lesson to voters everywhere: repeatedly electing conservatives to power will eventually leave you starving in a frozen (or desert) wasteland.

But just being state owned doesn’t mean that they’ll automaticly be invulnerable to economic bubbles.

Take for example the mixed bag performance of the state owned banks in the German three pillar banking system [state owned (60% of balance sheet totals), commercial (30%), credit unions (10%)] during the initial subprime crisis:

The banks owned by the states (Landesbanken) were hit almost as hard as the commercial banks, while the banks owned by local government (Sparkassen) were just as (relatively) unscathed as the credit unions (very localized business, no “gambling” in London or NYC).

So many countries, so little time.
