You didn’t expect the jackbooted Jack-Bauer-worshiping sadists to go away quietly, did you?
Faced with President Obama’s order setting in motion the shutdown of Gitmo and other US-run-and-approved torture sites, the folks who in a really just world would be in the dock at The Hague are now doing a full-on, lie-driven media pushback:
In a January 22 article, the Associated Press falsely stated, "The Pentagon recently reported that 61 former prisoners at Guantanamo have returned to the fight against the U.S. and its allies." Similarly, during the 1 p.m. ET hour of the January 22 edition
of CNN Newsroom, anchor Kyra Phillips asserted, "New Pentagon figures actually say 61 released detainees have been linked to some kind of terror activity." Both the AP and Phillips were discussing President Obama’s executive order requiring that the detention facilities at Guantánamo Bay be closed within a year. But the Pentagon has not confirmed that 61 former Guantánamo detainees have, in the AP’s words, "returned to the fight"; that figure includes 43 former prisoners who are "suspected" of doing so.
[...]
Additionally, as Daily Kos contributing editor Joan McCarter noted, Seton Hall University School of Law professor Mark Denebeaux [sic] has disputed the Pentagon’s figures, asserting: "Once again, they’ve failed to identify names, numbers, dates, times, places, or acts upon which their report relies. Every time they have been required to identify the parties, the DOD has been forced to retract their false IDs and their numbers."
As Media Matters goes on to show, the lies are being spread far and wide by a very helpful GOP/Media Complex.
Right on cue, Lidice Logic is being invoked by everyone’s favorite would-be dictator, Rudy Giuliani, who tried and failed to use the bombing of the Twin Towers as an excuse to blow off the mayoral election and stay on as mayor. Rudy’s now waving around the case of a Yemeni who was released from Guantanamo and went on to commit crimes as a reason to keep Gitmo going. Our own Jane Hamsher’s ripped into what he said on Joe Scarborough’s Morning Joe yesterday:
It’s very very strange that on the day that President announces this, they discover a guy that was released who is killing people, heh heh heh. And I follow this issue pretty closely, and just talked to someone who has been to Guantanamo and looked at the conditions there, this is not an unusual occurrence. There have been arguably 30 or 40 situations like that where people have been released from Guantanamo, have killed innocent
people, have killed American soldiers, so we’ve got to get our hands around how dangerous the group is.
Again, no names, facts, figures from the torturemongers. Just scare statements. And a chuckle from Rudy as he contemplates the possible deaths of innocents.
Oh, and as Bob Cesca has pointed out, nobody is pushing to immediately release all of Guantanamo’s inmates; instead, they will be transferred to other prison facilities while they receive the due process that was denied them for so many years. Furthermore, as studies by Seton Hall and Amnesty International have shown, the vast majority of the detainees are almost certainly innocent. Why should Rudy and the other torturemongers fear due process that would prove this?
Sorry about this not being a straight cooking column today, folks. Tell you what — let’s talk about the foods we’d cook for the poor guys in Gitmo, if we could. (Hummus, falafel and baba ganoush should be high on the list of meals they miss.)

ahem, if we still had livestock, I’d offer roasted goat – (only, he flew away in the helicopter on Tuesday morning..)
Who is running the Wurlitzer now? And who is benifiting from it? The shrieking is insane.
I really wish the democrats would start attacking these morons for damaging national security with;
“we have gotten less information not more through torture and the policies these people propose will have already wound up losing valuable data, we create enemies and the policies these people propose have turned allies into terrorists
every friend, every relative becomes and enemy of America when we torture, these people are deliberately promoting policies that put our country in GRAVE danger and the ONLY reason they are doing it is so that the people who’ve ordered these crimes don’t get charged for those crimes”
bing, shut their frigging faces down
This is sort of a CYA (Cover Your Ass)exercise on the part of those with blood on their hands.
I’m not seeing any change whatsoever in the media. They’ll probably be tough on Obama but they’re still by-and-large stenographers for the repubs.
Well Gates is still in charge in the Pentagon and so you still got some folks in the department who like torturing folks and the CIA will have a great many holdovers too. They run to the GOP for protection as the GOP is holding up the Holder nomination.
Dunno if he’d be halal, though.
Hmmm, last one I saw was in a wheelchair being stuffed into a limo.
Yup. Say what you will about Holder, but the fact that the Republicans are trying to hold up his nomination unless he promises never to prosecute Bush is rather suggestive, eh?
From what I read, when he got out of the line of sight and close to his limo, he had them stop and he walked to his limo. He actually stood after the ceremony – and was there when Obama came over to shake Bush’s hand. There is a photo of that – Bush looks like he doesn’t know what hit him (he’s looking down at something – I’m not sure what) and Cheney is standing there, looking into Obama’s face with an expression as close to ‘deathstar’ as I can think of. Those guys thought that we’d elected a patsy…and finally had their lightbulb moment during Obama’s speech.
Crank up the propaganda machine ,this ain’t news this is crap.
These people are gonna spend years trying to vindicate Bushes failed policies.
And that why those of us here and at other blogs have to keep hammering away with the truth!!
Has anyone found a link to that photo?
Linky?
Interesting! I only saw the limo moment whilst leaving the White House.
The reason for a failure to have a trial and bring all the evidence out against these terrorist detainees is simple. Anyone who represents a threat to the corporate interest in Iraq as related to the western corporate oil’s agenda is a terrorist.
England referred to the Americas colonist as a terrorist/insurgents etc. when the colonist realized the interest of the King was nothing short of “rape,” for colonies!
I wonder how many Americans where held without trial or better yet forced to serve the crown under penalty of death during the revolutionary period. Democracy in Iraq is a facade to advance the west’s access to a Jurassic Oil slick beneath Al Anbar province which borders Saudi Arabia’s oil pipeline and border. The Iraq oil plot continues in Iraq while corporate interests in America continue to rape Americans. Abject bullshit!!!
I missed that but I’ve got the inauguration tivo’d. When was it exactly? I’ll look for it. Immediately after O’s speech?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..index.html
It’s number 10 in the gallery.
This clip of Jon Stewart on the Daily Show is a great exmple of the returds cranking up the volume concerning “terrorists” being brought to the USA for trial.
Limbaugh’s desire for Obama to ‘fail’ is ‘arguably treasonous’: Stewart
Thanks. Bush looks like he’s fighting tears.
Well, he’s struggling for composure with something for sure..don’t know if it’s tears or anger, but the look on Cheney’s face is classic. Of course, the hat does not help him achieve ‘cuddly’ status there.
Fab photo. Words that come to mind? Sinister. Jealous. Treacherous. Has-been. Rat in a hat.
I think we all know what words were forming themselves in Cheney’s mouth at that moment..as I recall, he used something like them on a Senator.
Off to run errands – be back later; be good to each other, ok?
Correct, the hat didn’t help. But, personally, I was amazed that a wheelchair could make him look even more sinister. How is that possible?
Shouldn’t the outrage be directed at the authortarian Bushies for letting go of all of these deadly terrorists?

Thank you so much for this. Also, for all your comments and posts. I enjoy your website, too. I’m a big fan!
OT-Do you think there’s any friction between O and Biden? I found that clip of the Roberts joke disturbing. Andy Borowitz’s take made me laugh but I’d really like to believe all is well between them.
No. That would be too logical.
A-yep. Just because Obama’s polite doesn’t mean he can’t be tough. See, for example, his “I won” riposte to Jon Kyl’s assholery.
A little OT
I’m wondering ,did Obama remove restrictions on Freedom of Information requests ,to make it easier to investigate and prosecute crimes committed by Bush and Company ?
Just a thought!
I dunno, though I’m inclined to doubt it; at the inaugural, Biden was taking pictures with his pocket digital camera and then smilingly turned it over to Malia and Sasha so they could have fun with it. Granted, Biden — a father himself — seems to be comfy with anyone’s kids, but I can’t imagine him doing that if he was feuding with Malia and Sasha’s dad.
couple things occur to me: 1) if these were bad people why the hell did BUSH let them go? 2)why didn’t we hear criticism of BUSH for this? 3)closing Gitmo does not mean everybody just goes free
I can just see the NY Post headline:
BAM SEZ:
I WON
Foodie alert…HuffPo article: top chefs hope Obamas set new food standards
How can that picture be saved?
Good ol Murdoch! Always on the right side, eh?
That was before the Roberts joke. I was surprised at O’s reaction. He looked truly pissed. I thought Biden was funny. That’s my favorite thing about Biden, his quick wit and biting comments but I don’t think .
Exactly.
oops….I don’t think O agrees.
BAM SEZ:
SUCK EGGS
MITCH
I think you can print it……
Obama’s known to do a joke or two from time to time himself, but context matters. My take is he felt it was inappropriate at that occasion. From the inaugural speech onward his message has been these are serious times and require serious endeavors. “put away childish things” including wisecracks “on the clock.”
Save ‘em for the leisure times. Otherwise it muddies the message.
Has anyone asked when they bring up the crap that the gitmo detainees are now fighting on the battlefield to ask well WHY did Bush have the person released?
It was done on Bushes watch…… His administration decided to release the detainees…. IF they are on the battlefield then it is Bushes fault.
‘zactly. that’s what i was tryin’ t’say in my 32. and “he kept us safe… um… oh yeah.. not counting 9/11. But otherwise…..”
Right click on it – options appear
Time to get out of my pajamas and go work out ,gotta work off all those Cheetos and Twinkies !
ok. ‘nother dumb question from me:
which gallery? there’s a couple, no?
Thanks PW.
digg
The “Al Qaeda” myth required that the few hundred super jihadists prisoners be isolated. The corporate propagandists portrayed them as just too dangerous to be in the USA. But, (real) journalists would have had access to them. Many of them had been paid by the CIA to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan.
The real reason for the torture was not to get information, but to conceal information. The “detainees” were tortured to frighten them into concealing their links to various secret services.
Thank you, Boo!
You hit submit before I did….. What really cranks me is how the repugs cannot read a calendar….. HELLO Bush was president for 9 months with 50 some warnings before 911…. he did NOT inherit 911….. it happened on his watch…. same with anthrax and ok….. still have a lot of BushCo anger to work off….
re: my dumb question
never mind. i got it.
nice hat.
dick
My intuition tells me Obama would not hold a grudge against Biden for this, though he might have been irked at the time. He seems to have that Zen quality of being “in the moment” or “present”. It’s very rare in America. I live with a person who has it and I am continually amazed at the equanimity he brings to his relationships. I’m a keen observer of body language and I believe this is an attribute that contributes to Obama’s edge. That and the poker, Chicago politics, basketball, neighborhood organizing… Law Review…
yeah. all bullshit.
All of the shrieking about closing Guantanamo is just to distract the public from the fact that it was a stupid criminal idea. It’s another case of “Look quick over there and don’t pay any attention to how we screwed things up, again.”
aw c’mon katymine, those are just
Details! Details!
Inauguration photos. You get a 15 sec. ad then the gallery. Number 10.
is this the picture you are looking for? ;)
Is it any wonder that those prisoners who were purchased from Pakistan so Georgie could fill the GITMO prison to make it look like he’s ‘tough on terror’ are the ones who have now joined the jihad against our country, because their only crime was being the political opposition to Musharraf?
George Bush created the hatred against our nation. He will be responsible for it for a long time, because when America tortures, we are no better than the terrorist/enemy we shake our finger at. As the protest sign exclaimed at the Kennebunkport, Maine protest against George Bush in 2007:
“THANKS TO GEORGE BUSH THE NEXT 9/11 ATTACK WON’T BE A SURPRISE”
Yep. That’s it in a nutshell.
since I just discovered that I have a whole boat load of BushCo anger bottled up….. any suggestions on how to excise it? Is anyone else dealing with it too?
We can change Presidents in a few seconds…… the past isn’t so easy to let go…
And can any of us prove that the person on the video on the ‘al-Qaida website’ is really a former prisoner from GITMO? I mean, really, no one knows who is down there, so none of us will ever know if this person is who he says he is or not!
All part of the plan. I believe al-Qaida is just a death squad branch of the Bush Family & Friends Oil Cartel to use to get what they want politically & financially and they have heavily financed it. This is why no one knows how large the group is, who the members are, and why the “#2 al-Qaida guy” was caught countless times since 9/11/01! It’s just a well funded farce. I’m sure the Saudis royals are thankful too.
i got the same impression (as did others i talked to) (i.e. that The President was pissed). I thought it was inappropriate. But that’s Biden. I love Joe and he’s just gonna do some cringeworthy stuff. I think The Prseident knows that. He won’t like it but he’ll get over it and move on.
(I especially love that clip on Youtube from 2004 where a reporter asks Joe a question and he answers “Who gives a shit?”)
more of bush’s delusional “You can’t argue with the results.” That’s really what we’re hearing– “Gitmo worked.” Crazy stuff.
As someone who used to read and lambaste Michael Gordon’s reporting at the Times, I have to say this is all very reminiscent of what he used to do. You have unnamed sources in the Pentagon making claims which seem to evaporate along with their authors once anyone asks them to show some evidence for them.
As for the Republicans, being a fact-free bunch, they latch on to this stuff and no matter how many times it is debunked they just keep repeating it. I hope the Obama Administration gets some of their people in the Pentagon, or better yet Gates, and establish a put up or shut up policy where Pentagon spokespeople either produce evidence for their assertions or apologize (names attached).
No, I found the one I was looking for. But I’m really glad you put up that link. I love it. Love it.
I think there is a difference between being pissed and being momentarily annoyed and I think it was the later
I am totally with you on this. BushCo anger, cancer anger, blfffpt!! Like a pressure cooker without a steam outlet.
yeah. you’re right. momentarily pissed? doubt it’ll be the last time he gets annoyed with one of Biden’s wise-ass remarks. But that’s Joe.
TobyWollin @ 10: ”THEY” told us we had elected a patsy! … that Obama’s ”hands would be tied” and ”wait ’til Obama sees the daily briefings … he’ll get tough on terror too” and on and on and on. it’s shocking. and stunning how Obama defies all of that.
Yeah, but….we have attacked Pakistan on O’s watch.
Furthermore, as studies by Seton Hall and Amnesty International have shown….
Yay!!! Seton Hall!!!!!!!
Republicans die a thousand deaths. Brave men die but once.
And I wonder about this attack. Wasn’t our military already launching strikes into Pakistan under George Bush? Yep. And how many Bushies remain now under the Obama Administration? A ton. Makes you wonder if this newest strike was done without Obama’s approval and done via a loophole somewhere? Wouldn’t surprise me!
The Bushies who remain behind are also the same people providing President Obama with the latest ‘intelligence’ too. Scares me. We all know those assholes were willing to make shit up or forge documents to ‘prove’ their positions! Ugh.
I posted something on the oxdown gazette related to your topic, Phoenix Woman. It’s basically a link to an article called Free the Uighurs.
i saw the whole ceremony and Obama’s interactions with the wh staff after Biden’s gaffe. as Stewart pointed out that’s Obama’s stfu face. i think it started because Biden wasn’t sure what he was supposed to be doing … i tracked a bunch of day 1 and day 2 hiccups which i think were fair to expect. Obama wanted him to administer an oath to the wh staff (and it appeared Biden had already administered oaths to another group earlier). so the gaffe happened in the moments getting it straight that Biden was up at the plate, again.
it was clearly Roberts’ error on Tuesday, but Obama wants everything to be comfortable with anyone who is willing to be civil … hence going out of his way to absolve Roberts of any blame, EVEN to the point of sharing the blame himeself! so that was the LAST thing he wanted Biden to be joking about but it was the FIRST thing any democrat wanted to joke about!!!
all was comfortable again once Biden was back on track. just more first day jitters.
they will come to an understanding i think as Biden exercises his support of Obama. Biden will come to know what’s in and out as he works with Obama. and as time goes on whatever needs to be done to make sure everyone knows their role will reduce the opportunities for these ”moments.”
as far as i am concerned: it’s all Bush’s fault … INCLUDING any difficulties we have cleaning this mess up. if people turn to terror, and there’s no evidence, only propaganda, so far, it’s too bad: Bush made this bed for us.
and, yes, please: Free the Uighurs!!!!
egregious has posted a video of the professor’s comments about the claimed “return to combat” by Gitmo alumni: http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/3198
based on what Olberman said about the counting of those ”returning to the fight” it includes former detainees who have appeared in documentaries.
so ”returning to the fight” includes participating in peaceful campaigns to inform the world about the injustices of the WoT.
seeing a pattern there? we are all terrorists now.
wigwam: exactly what I was reading elsewhere. the propaganda is ALWAYS much worse than we imagine.
i went there but never was in one of Denbeaux’s classes. popular professor.
Nor should anyone want any part of him.
May he wander unseen for the rest of his days.
Tweety has been coming on strongly in favor of prosecution: http://www.dailykos.com/story/…..285/688242
I don’t miss the cooking column. I see it as a threat to my male cookship.
**____**
I can’t believe anyone would think that Republicans would lie. And on television? No way. They are all far too honest. [/snark]
not getting audio for some reason. i’ll run that down somwewhere later. thanks.
Hi guys, EPU, but this was an interesting caption in the wapo photo gallery linked above:
