Some people wake up in the morning and spiritually center themselves with yoga, others jog a couple of miles, and some do other kinds of exercise.
Some people read scripture or some other devotional text each morning, and others offer daily prayers.
With all the hubbub about swearing and re-swearing over the last two days, I wouldn’t mind it one bit if Obama recited the Presidential Oath of Office every morning before breakfast, to remind himself why he’s got this new job.
After the last 8 years, it might even be a good idea.

About Firedoglake
Hey…he could organize a breakfast for all the members of Congress and have them recite their oaths to protect and uphold the Constitution as well. Start a new tradition — remind them of what their jobs are. great idea.
Over the last eight years, I all too often had the feeling that the devotions in the Bush Administration began “Let us prey . . .”
Cronies and contributors found loopholes in federal regulations, regulators themselves were pulled back, lands were exploited, science was given a back seat . . .
Yes, the oath on a daily basis would be great. Heck, I’d even settle for reciting (and thinking about the words while doing it) the Pledge of Allegiance. Especially the parts about this being a republic and having liberty and justice for all.
I wake up every morning and read the posts at FDL.
I wonder what that says about my spiritual center?
Yep – 8 years of people who do not understand that their personal interests are NOT necessarily the interests of the American People…
It means that we need to change, esp on Sunday, the name of the place to The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Lake…
Excellent idea! Followed by several minutes of silence to let it sink in. Over and over again.
And I agree with TobyW. I got really p*ssed at my congresscritter last summer after the FISA vote when his robo statement said that his job was to keep us “safe.” I let him know that his job was to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. We had a rather heated discussion about it later on.
Whenever these elected officials go off on how they define their jobs, and then don’t do what their oaths say, we need to start each post with the oath—then contrast that against what they are doing.
no—I don’t have any strong feelings about this. Not.
I’ve always had a problem with the Pledge of Allegiance. I’d rather they Pledge to uphold principles and duty, as opposed to a symbol.
If Obama is one of those who need something to sing or chant as a part of the morning devotions, I highly recommend this.
“Lady of The Lake”
That would be Jane ,wouldn’t it?
never did understand the thing about pledging allegiance to a fabric inanimate object. Seems kind of sacrilegious to me. Not to mention dumb.
There is that line in the pledge “. . . and to the Republic for which it stands . . .”
Well, we have quite a few here, don’t we:
St. Jane
St. Christy
St. Marcy (or, Our Lady of the Emptywheel)
St. LHP (or, Our Lady of the Prop with a Loose Head…)
We’re just crawling with this here…
I would suggest also that the % of GDP for energy and health care combined for 2005, 24.6 % of GDP, be posted right next to the oath for daily reciting. The stats for 06 07 08 are not complete. Seems considerable liberty could be freed from costly inefficient antiquated ways of doing business, to address standard of living concerns. Kind of how we severed our ties with a King and his corporate cohorts in colonial crime 230 year ago! One problem, corporations tax exempt or not which do not breath, do not bleed, and the corporate officers who avoid accountability under the protection of a corrupt corporate umbrella???
Yep..when push comes to shove, ‘the stars and stripes’ are not going to protect us. It’s only the living, breathing constitution that protects us and as far as I’m concerned, these folks need to understand that protecting and strengthening THAT is Job One.
Yeah, I know but it still seems, well, unseemly. It’s basically for show. It was a cute thing for us to do as kids in school, but I doubt that any of us ever really knew what that was about. And upon growing up, I’d rather we live it than say it. JMO of course.
G’Morning Sir !
BO could save time by reading Bush’s Bathroom Prayer … “I think, therefore it must be true !”
LOL … Let us Prey … classic !
I not sure Jane or the others would like to be referred to as Saint!!
That makes so much sense … which means it will never be adopted.
Congrats on the new addition ! Everyone is well ?
Every fax I sent during the FISA era it started with “you took an oath of office which states you will xxx” and asking why they are breaking their oath by voting for FISA…
Jayt !
I suppose you dislike The Purity Pledge as well. *g*
>>>> – good morning. And I used the same technique on my emails and faxes, too. At one point I was threatening to buy up every small copy of the Constitution that Barnes and Noble had to mail one to each person down there since only Robert Byrd seemed to be familiar with the document.
‘course “think” and “true” are both kinda alien concepts for shrub and “therefore” is too much of a big word
yep. Seems pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? But then again, the “serious” people often have trouble understanding the obvious.
You mean protecting the republic, the republic’s general welfare and its people form which government drives its just and moral power, from the domestic abuse inflicted on the governed by myopic self serving corporations?
Did not Jefferson warn us of these aristocrats and constitutional usurpation in the lust for endless profit by powerful corporate interests? Yes he did and we ignore him everyday. I believe the threat to liberty from within is greater than the threat from misguided religious whack jobs who think just like the Christian Crusaders who killed rape and pillaged in the name of god!!!

At that time I advocated putting together a way to buy large lots of pocket constitutions and flood the congress with them but it did seem to catch on….
The pledge to me is a way to instill conformity and stifle descent. I’d be happy if it was gone.
If you’ve ever been in deecee, every congressional office has a pile of little booklets that are give-away copies of the Constitution. I grabbed a bunch to give to folks back home during one of my visits. They are everywhere!
I love the copy that some of us gave to Christy a couple of years ago for her B’day. It is just beautiful with a bit of whimsy thrown in.
It all comes down to greed .
When making a profit is the only thing that matters!
agree. It kind of reminds me of all the clips we used to see when we were younger of nasty totalitarian regimes and what they made their kids do.
In his first 3 days in Office, Barack broke another of Bush’s Laws … namely … workin’ 3 days in a week !
Yes, I’m on the road with my younger daughter, but the older one was home for the mare and foal’s return. They were ready to run after being cooped up for a week. They both are doing great.
Know what? Each of us could send a copy to our Senator and Rep. Small investment, but major reminder. Wouldn’t break anyone’s bank (I hope), and I’m guessing FDL could cover the country.
I always felt a little awkward when reciting it as kid. As an adult I usually don’t participate when its being recited.
Well, I will be more than happy to send copies to Schumer and now Gillibrand. Arcuri is a lost cause, frankly, but I will send him one.
That response was to RevDeb @32.
Obama’s managed to undo years of Bushco damage in just 3 days, imagine what he can get done in 4 or 8 years
Workin’ three consecutive days in a week.
And not a single day of vacation yet…….KO totaled all the days Bush took off in 8 years and I seem to remember it totaled over 1000 days….
I didn’t like it either when I was a kid I thought we were praying to the flag
Okay, I’m in. Klobuchar, John “The Colonel” Kline, and, ummmm, Al Franken and/or Norm.
Yes ask the people at standard oil who sold the fuel additive to the Nazi’s which enabled the ’s bombing of London…the blitz.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blitz
“The Blitz was the sustained bombing of Britain by Nazi Germany between 7 September 1940 and 10 May 1941, in World War II. The name is a shortening of the German term, “Blitzkrieg”, or “Lightning War”. While the “Blitz” hit many towns and cities across the country, it began with the bombing of London for 57 consecutive nights .[1] By the end of May 1941, over 43,000 civilians, half of them in London, had been killed by bombing and more than a million houses destroyed or damaged in London alone.[2][3]”
Standard Oil an American company made considerable profit while enabling the death of 43,000 English citizens by provide Nazi’s with the aviation fuel addictive which allow the German to complete the trip. Better air mileage in the sky for the Luftwaffe. Standard Oil is now Exxon Mobile.
Go figure!!
Yup 1000 + days 1/3 of his time in office he was on vacation !
Speaking of FISA, shouldn’t the Tice revelations on Countdown be big news? Has anyone seen this reported anywhere else? It seems KO lives in a vacuum. No headline at MSNBC or elsewhere. If that were revealed on MTP or FTN it would be a lead story. Why is this not the headline anywhere? And why isn’t Tice a guest on other shows?
I know … the rest of the World was taken by surprise at how quickly he removed two blemishes of
the Bush era – Gitmo and Black- site prisons.
His signature piece will be Health Care for all. And I sincerely hope he and the Clintons can seal a Mid-East Peace Deal.
Luftwaffe’s bombing of London… correction
and the other 2/3rds of his time he was screwing
aroundus.Ridin’ a Mountain Bike in the middle of DeeCee is hard work …
Because the only change we can believe in is in the oval office. The media industrial complex is still same old same old.
We shall see if it rattles any cages in congress. How long do we give them before we do a full court press ourselves?
Nah, Rev – he was ‘preying’..remember?
Profit at any cost! It don’t matter how ya made it as long as you made it!
When he was at the office he was out to lunch.
Jefferson’s fear, the cost will be the Republic!!!
Googled this and first result is from “Oxdown Gazette.” Booyah. Only other MSM, on second page of results, was MSNBC.
But the MSM doesn’t know who has their files…… they know there are files, they have been cowed because of it but with the transition does someone in BushCo still have the info or if anyone one in the Obama administration would use it too… (I do not think they would)
That’s interesting, I didn’t see it that until your comment.
Good morning, everyone! Coffee’s on upstairs, if anyone’s interested.
I wonder if Obama removed restrictions on Freedom Of Information requests,to make it easier for investigators to uncover crimes committed by BushCo?
Just a thought !!
Read Emptywheel, Marcy and the others are delving deeply into that.
Scott Horton writes about it on Harpers.org, but only DFH’s bother to read his stuff. After all, laws? Why should anyone care about any stinkin’ laws as long as the daddy state protects us from evil doers?
So EPU’D. If you wish to use it, I’ve been at this for years:
If you worship a flag, you deify a rag.
I thought British Petroleum bought Standard Oil. If what you say is true, this is the Human Comedy at its finest. Global Comedy, these days.
