OnTuesday evening I smelled the stinch of death and destruction here in East Texas that I hadn’t since leaving Southeast Asia in the early 70s. Come to find out W had landed in West Texas and the wind was out of the North. Since we have the major factions in Texas I say we need to build a 12 foot wall around the state and create for New Mexico, Oklahoma,and Louisiana the worlds biggest swimming pool! LOL……

The irony is that the families of two would-be victims of the Futile Care Act were taking their cases to court during the Terri Schiavo debacle. To paraphrase Jon Stewart, the “culture of life” is a *hobby* with these people, not a value.

He is telling the truth, the republican truth.
They protect the unborn. That’s it. Children, are on their own.
1995 Gov bush signed into legislation a bill that allowed Dr.’s and hospitals the right to suspend life sustaining care for patients even if their family disagreed. They had 10 days to find alternate care.
During the time of Terri Schiavo, a 3 yr old brain damaged child was allowed to die over the objections of his mom. She couldn’t pay for his care unlike Mrs. Schiavo family.
So I amend my statement They only protect the unborn and those that can pay cold hard cash.

My bad – I forgot we do get to vote on them. But of course, there’s virtually no information printed about them, so most often we don’t know much about them when faced with names in the voting booth.
And I admit, Board of Ed members haven’t been my priority in researching candidates. Next time, I will try to do better – muuuuch better.

Sorry about the delay – having computer troubles yet again and it shut me down and logged me off awhile ago. Sigh.

Actually, they are the 15-member State Board of Education. I had the honor to vote against one of those on the conservative side of the issue last election, but to no avail.

Texas has something called the “Advance Directives Act” (aka “Futile Care Law”) on the books, which allows hospitals to stop treatment for incapacitated patients in “hopeless” cases, even over the objections of family members. George W. Bush himself signed this legislation into law in 1999.

The law was amended in 2003 to apply to minors. Governor Rich Perry signed the legislation.

“Culture of life”? Not so much.
