I see that my governor is guest-posting at RedState. (updated)
Thirty-six years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Roe v. Wade, and since then more than 49 million abortions have been performed in America.
As Governor of Texas, I have worked hard to promote a culture of life. I’m proud to have supported and signed a number of key bills including bans on partial-birth abortions and taxpayer-funded abortions in Texas, as well as passing an informed consent law and a prenatal protection act that protects unborn children from assault.
Working together, we have better aligned Texas laws with Texas values, but I need your help on the challenges that remain.
Though Republicans don’t want anyone to know it, the phrase "culture of life" isn’t just about abortion. It was coined by John Paul II and includes opposition to capital punishment, poverty and unjust war. Pretty much everything Republicans love.
So how’s Perry really doing on that culture of life stuff?
Let’s start with his unbridled enthusiasm for executions. In an era when other states are putting moratoriums on the death penalty, he’s executed nearly 200 people since he took office — more than any governor since 1977. Very culture of lifey!
How about poverty?
- Texas continues to rank 50th out of 50 among the states in health coverage for children.
- Texas has more children growing up to be adults in the correctional system than any other state.
- Texas still ranks near the bottom in child hunger, child poverty, and child deaths from abuse or neglect.
- Infant mortality rates have steadily climbed in Texas this decade, while remaining unchanged in the nation as a whole.
Most impressive.
And naturally, it goes without saying that Perry has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for Iraq and the War on Terror(TM).
Culture of life? Not so much, Rick.
UPDATE
EnfantTerrible helpfully reminds me in comments that:
Texas has something called the “Advance Directives Act” (aka “Futile Care Law”) on the books, which allows hospitals to stop treatment for incapacitated patients in “hopeless” cases, even over the objections of family members. George W. Bush himself signed this legislation into law in 1999.
The law was amended in 2003 to apply to minors. Governor Rich Perry signed the legislation.
I don’t think John Paul II had state-sponsored euthanasia in mind when he came up with "culture of life."

Fitting that W retired to Dallas, huh?
Infant Mortality rates have grown under Perry Where does Texas rate nation wide?
Death Penalty Executions Where does Texas rate?
I thought Clbert made this clear a long time ago that Republicans aren’t about truth but truthiness.
Retiring to the Hague would be more appropriate.
I was wondering who is keeping count.
Should read …….promote a culture of life for the rich white folks
Venezuela Infant Mortality rates
http://www.indexmundi.com/vene….._rate.html
Notice that they are dropping slowly.
Could read ….more than 49 million unwanted pregnancies in America have not resulted in unwanted children
“The Hair” needs to get a clue about Texas culture.
BT having Texas 50th keeps Arizona at 49th…. usually it was Mississippi …. what is it with these SW red states?
In Texas it ain’t ever about what it seems to be. It’s really about money in this case.
Numbers for Teens getting knocked up after abstinence only education took effect? The number of these kids ending up on welfare?
Why do we let them get away with calling themselves “pro-life.”
With some notable exceptions, most of them are only anti-abortion, but pro-death in all postpartum instances.
Seems that Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina lead that nation in stupid things.
Rick Perry seems to want to get the Sarah Voters is he seriously thinking of running?
Does anyone know where these numbers like “49 million” abortions come from? That seems really high to me considering how few places actually perform abortions.
BT,
Thanks.
For “calling out” the “not-so-much” Rick P.
High School graduation rates No Child Left Behind how is it working?
No but I would guess that those are old numbers world wide? Or are maybe the GOP is making stuff up again?
Sounds like a Zinger for the MSM if they ever decide to contradict a prolifer on tv.
I also seem to remember the “culture of life’s” “abstinance only” causes more teen pregnancy and more abortions
go figure
BTW the former (he did not stand for reelection) Republican leader of the NY State Senate Joe Bruno has just been indicted.

How many have died From Texas? Whats the state of the VA healthcare system there?
Culture of Good Hair?
(h/t Molly)
Because there are what, maybe 300 million people in the U.S. and roughly half of them are female, so we’re down to 150 million females in the U.S. How many of those are likely of child-bearing age? Maybe another half? 75 million women and 41 million abortions?
Does that mean that more than half of all U.S. women have had an abortion?
The numbers seem a little suspect to me.
Probably the same place that numbers like UAW workers making $73/hr, 61 released detainees winding up on the battlefield, etc. They are anal extractions.
I don’t see why Gov. Goodhair should care about what the Pope has to say, after all the Pope isn’t a Talibangelical Baptist, so who cares what he says?
Well, that’s true, but he is quoting him while discarding the original meaning.
Not very strict constructionist of him.
Even better Zinger!
BT, you said it all very well. “Culture of life,” my ___. Only for the unborn, as far as I can see.
Hey, well, at least science teaching based on science won its first round in Texas this morning. (see early morning swim). I notice the board member from SA voted for ignorance and religion in school. I wonder if he’s accessible to the public? These are not elected folks.
Surely, even if Gov Goodhair tried a national run in today’s world, he wouldn’t get much farther than Sarah P. Voters are starting to recognize empty suits, and his being from TX would, I think, put many people on alert after Dubya’s disasters.
He is trying to reach out to Prolife Catholics sounds like he is thinking of running for President.
But isn’t that the standard modus operandi for just about ANYTHING they
quotecitetake out of context?Wash your pixels out with soap!
I have a feeling KBH is going to hand him his ass next year.
Good catch now we know why Rick decide to speak about the subject today he wants to counter the Bad News about teaching science.
And horrors! The Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman performance at the Inauguration was actually taped music. I thought they looked too relaxed. Now I know why.
They may have tried to get it from voting registration rolls. Number of registered female dems x 36 yrs

Ah, the Republican culture of fascism, anti-sex and anti-female. The culture of white male dictatorship…
O/T: US military drones have fired missiles in NW Pakistan and at least 19 Pakistanis are now dead. So Obama is carrying on the Bush imperial war of terror on the third world peoples. Bombing you can believe in…
Just search on “drone Pakistan” in Google news and read all about it yourself.
? VA healthcare system is Federally funded. Texas has a really strong group of veterans who are politically active.
I never believed their instruments could hold true pitch in that cold.
Partial answer for Texas:
http://www.mysanantonio.com/li….._high.html
Column by Express-News columnist Cary Clack on learning that Texas dropped from #1 in teen pregnancies to #3 – behind, yes, Mississippi
He notes that the actual number of pregnancies in Tex went up, only the ranking went down.
I should hope so.
Hey I think we can beat him. Plus its increasingly the older Catholics who are dying for lack of healthcare thanks to the GOP who hold those views.
Younger Catholics are shifting pro Birth Control huge and a bit on abortion.
Abortion during rape or incest the numbers go up.
I still wonder if we had National Healthcare for 10 years or so before the election could John McCaain have won the election?
Old White Men were his strongest group of supporters.
But that was over 39 years, if you divide the number by years then adjust your numbers.
Is that snark, or did you actually hear that said somewhere? It looked to me like they were actually playing. I’m suspicious of that report.
As top players in the game, they would be relaxed.
Got a link?
Actually, Texas does have one of the highest numbers of lives lost in Iraq, a good many of them from the south Texas area. In the last year or two it seemed every week there was a funeral being covered on the Express-News front page.
I’d have to search for stats, don’tquite have time. But Texas is up there, as you would expect.
But do they use local hospitals and/or VA ones? If Healthcare is lousy how far you have to drive to a hospital does affect your survival rate.
Also the quality of the Hospital does affect the survival rate too.
And he is one of the biggest fear mongers in the country.
Republicans die a thousand deaths, while brave men die but once.
Culture of
LifeLies, Meet reality:) Another Good CatchThis morning near Austin, a three-year-old child accidentally shot and killed himself.
http://www.statesman.com/blogs…..illia.html
Culture of Life, Culture of Life! Thanks NRA, and Rethugs like Perry who care about their guns more than children.
I was commenting about the VA as the quality of care & services are up to federal funding and not the state.
Many of the SW states have lost more than our fair share to the two wars. Large number of our Native Americans enlist and loose their lives.
It looked like Milli Vanilli were singing too. I believe that they had pre-recorded. First of all, try playing strings or the piano in weather like that, and second Teddy Partridge has a valid point about instruments holding pitch in frigid weather. They may very well have been playing, but with the recorded version going over the sound system.
Wow. After I posted, I saw the link.
I didn’t realize you were a musician too. In cold weather, I have to retune my instrument. But, that they played along with the recording, and they seemed in tune with the recording, I’m wondering what the big deal is?
Do you know what I mean? The recording was like a play back that they played along with, it seems like.
Not everything is a sham, and I doubt this was either.
see my #37.
Teddy, yes, I thought they might have tried to heat the area but I couldn’t see any shimmering of the air.
Who is he what do you know about him I would google but KBH isn’t much to go on.
This just in: The inagural speech was written in advance.
The music was lovely whether it was recorded or not.
There were no mikes near the musicians?
I think instruments can hold tune for a short while. I could be wrong, but I’ve played in cold weather before, so I’m only going on my own personal experience.
Good point, TCU – distance vets have to drive has been an issue here. Just given the great distances in Texas, some in rural areas do have quite a distance to their nearest VA Hospital.
Audie Murphy Hosp here in San Antonio is the nearest for a large area of the state.
OH, honey – you’re obviously not from Texas. *g*
KBH is Kay Bailey-Hutchison.
She is a Republican, certainly conservative, but not as certifiable as Cornyn or as dumb as Perry.
here ya go
Why is the Texas GOP letting her get away with a primary challenge to GoodHair? She has a job, and a nice one. Why would she want to be the governor? Who has Perry pissed off?
I mean, challenging an incumbent governor from your own party is really newsworthy. If they weren’t GOPs, we’d be treated to hundreds of “Democrats in Disarray” stories.
Sadly, no.
It’s unclear to me why exactly she wants to be governor, but I think she’d beat Perry.
Teddy, Teddy, Teddy… Please to remember that Republicans are NEVER in disarray. They just search really, really hard for the perfect candidate. Just as they did all during primary season. (Let’s hope that it keeps on working well for them!)
Culture of hypocrisy, greed, corporatism, aggression, destruction, death, torture, corruption, incompetence, negligence, failure, conspiracy, malfeasance, bold-face lying, perjury and countless cover-ups. There is no personal honor or integrity left in being a Republican. Especially a Bush Republican. People like Rick Perry remind me of dying fish gasping their last desperate breathes trying to breathe air as the water that has given them life evaporates, recedes and turns to dust.
Thanks. I did see Hugh’s link after I posted. See my #53.
People do play music in the cold. And it sounds to me like they were playing along with the recorded music.
It was lovely. I enjoyed it. And, I haven’t heard anyone who was sitting within listening distance of the actual musicians say that their playing was off.
My point is really, can’t we just enjoy some things without saying it’s all manipulated and a joke?
“culture of life” = control
control women’s bodies
control the populace via fear and want-executions, no health care, no education, no birth control, no compassion
Yeah, but those numbers still seem pretty high to me. Does anyone know how they came up with those numbers, or can someone offer alternate numbers?
I’ve just always been suspicious of the numbers that get bandied about on this issue.
In the burbs in Illinois where I used to live 2 major hospitals with helicopters to get you to the hospital quick. plus a family health clinic.
Growing up though nearest hospital was in the next county. 4th grade I sneezed and the blood would not stop bleeding so with a giant handfull of tissue held up to my nose.
My Dad broke every speed limit in 2 counties to get me to the hospital.
The Doctor said take some iron pills so the blood clots better.
However if the bleeding was worse like from a car accident or something I might not be here.
Texas I’m guessing being much bigger than Illinois has an even bigger problem with hospital drive times.
Well the weather is better, the hours are easy, and the responsibilities are minimal.
Those state elections in 2010 are going to be important because of the census and redistricting.
Damm we don’t want the GOP selecting better candidates!
Ah, yes! It is time to re-Gerrymander isn’t it?
If they were “better” candidates they wouldn’t be GOP.
Ask the question again when Jane is around. Or on late late night where noting is off topic someone from the prochoice side should have an answer.
The prochoice side does seem to have a lot of friends here.
Sorry, Greater and Lesser degrees of Bad.
Are you doubtful that there are too few or too many?
How many Counties in Texas have Hospitals? How far is the drive time to the nearest Hospital?
Do you have to drive through 2 counties to get to a Hospital in some cases?
Family Doctors I hope every County has one, but baby Doctors whats the distance for that?
Good job pointing out the “culture of life” thing. I’m, a catholic. Nominallty, at least. Don’t agree with the Church about a bunch of stuff. But these whackjobs in and out of the church -esepcially in and including some clergy – oughta know that the Church’s prolife position is “womb to tomb.” I hate it when these people cherry pick and make “pro life” synonomous with “anti-abortioon.” ’snot.
My apologies to teddy and hugh. I shouldn’t have been so cynical about your remarks.
Some idiotic dildo dad in Mass. let his 8 year old blow his own face off with an uzi machine gun at some gun range a few months back.
Family values, culture of life!

From the Guttmacher Institute site:

Yeah or when the last Pope decided to make the Virgin of Guadalupe the Protector of the Unborn. I never remembered her saying squat about that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Guadalupe
Thousands of women died from self induced abortions before Roe v Wade.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-induced_abortion
This in one of the main motivators for Margaret Sanger’s work.
Not just self-induced, but back alley procedures performed by medical or non-medical personnel without proper training or antiseptic conditions. If you were lucky you knew of a doctor who would say you needed a D&C because of an infection. Otherwise, you took your chances.
• Thirty-seven percent of abortions occur to black women, 34% to non-Hispanic white women, 22% to Hispanic women and 8% to women of other races.**
• Forty-three percent of women obtaining abortions identify themselves as Protestant, and 27% as Catholic.[3]
• Women who have never married obtain two-thirds of all abortions.[3]
• About 60% of abortions are obtained by women who have one or more children.[7]
• The abortion rate among women living below the federal poverty level ($9,570 for a single woman with no children) is more than four times that of women above 300% of the poverty level (44 vs. 10 abortions per 1,000 women).
http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs…..rtion.html
My bold Poverty and Protestant expected minorities being poor having higher rates not unexpected.
Women who already have had a kid make up 60% of abortions unexpected.
After experiencing the whole miracle of life thing first hand they are still choosing abortion. They make up the majority of Abortions.
Times are so tough out there that for single poor women that they are choosing to abort after having experienced the whole miracle of life thing.
I think we have a new talking point here.
Rick Perry is the only politician in Texas stupider than W. I know that’s a pretty low bar, but…
All hair and no cattle.
I wonder if the suicide rate and or accidental death rate (accident because the Doctor wanted to spare the family from knowing there daughter killed herself)
Is higher in states with less places to get an abortion?
didn’t know tehre was a politician in the world stupider than W. (with the possible exception of palin.)
“Culture of life”? Not so much.
Here’s a story i remember about a baby who was taken off the ventilator because of that law:
Actually, they are the 15-member State Board of Education. I had the honor to vote against one of those on the conservative side of the issue last election, but to no avail.
My bad – I forgot we do get to vote on them. But of course, there’s virtually no information printed about them, so most often we don’t know much about them when faced with names in the voting booth.
And I admit, Board of Ed members haven’t been my priority in researching candidates. Next time, I will try to do better – muuuuch better.
Sorry about the delay – having computer troubles yet again and it shut me down and logged me off awhile ago. Sigh.
“a prenatal protection act that protects unborn children from assault.”
He is telling the truth, the republican truth.
They protect the unborn. That’s it. Children, are on their own.
1995 Gov bush signed into legislation a bill that allowed Dr.’s and hospitals the right to suspend life sustaining care for patients even if their family disagreed. They had 10 days to find alternate care.
During the time of Terri Schiavo, a 3 yr old brain damaged child was allowed to die over the objections of his mom. She couldn’t pay for his care unlike Mrs. Schiavo family.
So I amend my statement They only protect the unborn and those that can pay cold hard cash.
The irony is that the families of two would-be victims of the Futile Care Act were taking their cases to court during the Terri Schiavo debacle. To paraphrase Jon Stewart, the “culture of life” is a *hobby* with these people, not a value.
I didn’t realize that…wow.
Rick Perry: “We keep cockroaches alive at all costs because they vote Republican!”
Not to be forgotten from the list…the abysmal graduation rate in Texas high schools.
Perry is Bush with bigger hair. Useless.
OnTuesday evening I smelled the stinch of death and destruction here in East Texas that I hadn’t since leaving Southeast Asia in the early 70s. Come to find out W had landed in West Texas and the wind was out of the North. Since we have the major factions in Texas I say we need to build a 12 foot wall around the state and create for New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana the worlds biggest swimming pool! LOL……
