My good friend Erick Erickson over at Red State has some trouble wrapping his head around the details of the Employee Free Choice Act:
With the left taking over, there are a lot of bills that will be introduced, and unfortunately passed, that threaten our way of life. However, perhaps the most damming is the Orwellian named Employee Free Choice Act (known as Card Check).
This bill will take away numerous rights and protections currently afforded to workers employed at companies where unions are actively seeking to organize.
One of the reasons I adore Erick — he’s all about protecting the"little people."
The bill would remove workers’ rights to a federally supervised private ballot election.
No it doesn’t — H.R. 800 (which Steny Hoyer says will be the base bill) gives workers the right to choose either a secret ballot or majority sign-up. But I’m sure they appreciate Erick’s willingness to take the burden of choice off their shoulders.
Once a majority of employees have signed cards, the union is immediately recognized. State "right-to-work" laws essentially become irrelevant.
"Right-to-work" laws are allowed under a provision of the Taft-Hartley Act which prohibits either membership in a union or paying union dues as a requirement for employment. They are currently in effect in 22 states and even the bill’s conservative foes acknowledge that Employee Free Choice will have no effect whatsoever on right-to-work laws.
Our friends at the Alliance for Worker Freedom, a organization founded by Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist in 2003 to combat anti-worker legislation and promote free and open markets is leading a state-based grassroots charge against this assault. Of course, they are immediately met with push back as you can see here:

Save Our Secret Ballots is a Heritage Foundation/Goldwater Institute project, which is the subject of the "push back" that you can "see here." It has nothing to do with Grover Norquist or the Alliance For Worker Freedom.
What can you say. I love Erick for his body, not his mind.

About Firedoglake
I love the idea of “giving the workers the choice”…interesting concept isn’t it
I have no kind words about Grover Norquist.
Thanks Jane.
digg is open.
He hasn’t been worth a damn since leaving Sesame Street.
We need to run Marcy’s post on the US Airlines landing on the Hudson.
Well except for being totally wrong about everything I think Erickson may be on to something or maybe simply on something.
Their paternalistic concern for workers is really very touching.
As in “bad touch where your bathing suit covers.”
I don’t think it really matters if Erickson wraps his head around the Employee Free choice Act. In the end he is just going to pull something out of his a$$ anyway
Removing the burden of choice is the hallmark of the GOP on just about everything. That, and cutting taxes.
I’m surprised Erick left out the part about how EFCA will raise taxes. Because it will, won’t it? Everything the Democrats propose does that, you know. [/s]
Oh. Suddenly the wingnuts are concerned about “Orwellian” language.
The next thing they are going to say is that the detainees at Gitmo will be allowed to unionize leading to the mutilation of the inhabitants of entire cities.
You crack me up.
can erickson see his tonsils?
Are you a writer for the Colbert Report?
Yeah. That was my reaction. Bush never did anything like that. /s
No. Is that what they are saying on the Colbert report?
erick the body erickson.
Jane, you are a cruel cruel woman, for which i am eternally grateful. jesus, that dude could kidnap a small child by hiding it in his rolls. dude’s gotta do some sit=ups if he intends to lead the wolveriiiiiiiiines!!!!!!!
No. But what you typed sounded like an OTT thing that Colbert might say.
This is very important, and I don’t intend to hijack the thread – but Carolyn Maloney is on MSNBC w/ Andrea Mitchel smacking down the choice of Kirsten Gillibrand.
I hope it’s true that Maloney will challenge Gillibrand. I was hoping Paterson would choose Maloney, but I guess that was too much to hope for.
Of course, I’m not a NY voter, but with luck, I’ll have an income again by the next elelction and can make a $$ contribution to Maloney.
Oops, what I meant was – the THREAD topc is very important, but it didn’t come out that way.
His parents knew he was going to be an idiot. That’s why they named him Erick Erickson. He’d at least have a chance of getting one or the other name right. Another first name would have tied the poor boy up in knot’s. He’d still be in the 1st grade.
BTW Erick, time to ditch the loafers and learn to tie you shoes. Oh that’s right, you can’t reach them…
OT,
BUT how awesome is AWESOMENESS to see the WH press briefing without being offended mentally and ethically, personally, by having the hopelessly inane and infuriating Dana Peroxide presiding and just insulting each and every cell in my body by even BEING there, let alone using words!
I’m loving this!!!!!
Now THAT’S what I’m talkin’ about! I’d like to see a commercial run on TV in suport of EFCA-with footage of the plane rescue as its centerpiece.
Even the visuals look like a painting!
The unions were the “wind beneath their wings” that day,for sure.
And Ms. Kennedy has a better body that Gillibrand gooper
Heh. Now Obama seems to be starting a fight over bipartisanship.
Oh you so busted us.
How did you know?
At the hour that a workers union forms, management will hire layers of managers and other excluded support staff – especially lawyers for the contract’s interpretation haha – mostly to siphon future revenues out of the resources pool before the workers can ask for some of it. The costs to everyone in the economy increase owing to that sort of vigorish, and it takes years to adjust and try to establish an equilibrium. It’s a tragic waste of time and resources. Bosses are vile and wretched.
don’t know the guy. is he a man of some girth?
Erickson can’t even see his winky.
check out the linked picture.
he looks like a blueberry muffin stuffed into a pair of trousers.
wow. this shit is really persoanl with this guy.
love it.
can anyone here translate Boner-ese. This is what he had to say about the stimulus bill. it’s a new one on me. maybe I haven’t been listening to Boner. again.
How can you spend hundreds of millions of dollars on contraceptives?” Boehner asked. “How does that stimulate the economy?”
wtf is he talking about?
Boner is probably conflating the removal of restrictions on discussion of abortion in federally funded family planning clinics with the economic stimulus package (hey, it deals with the results of a type of stimulus HE can believe in, okay :P ).
Employee Free Choice Now . Org
Educating The World on The EFCA.
Myth vs. Reality: The REALITY is the Employee Free Choice Act Helps American Workers and their Families.
Despite the need for reform, critics of EFCA continue to misinform the public about the bill and hide the serious shortcomings of current labor law. Democrats are committed to setting the record straight and passing this important legislation on behalf of American workers and their families.
MYTH: EFCA will prevent the use of secret-ballot elections.
REALITY: EFCA does not strip workers of their right to choose a secret-ballot election to decide whether to select — or not to select — a union representative. EFCA simply gives workers the additional option of selecting a union representative by majority sign-up.
