Harper’s Scott Horton notes that last week several career State Department staffers compared former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz
My pleasure Suz.
Did you get any rain from that last low that went by? We got about 3/4″ overnight. Not greatest weather for generating electricity but what little still helps the bill.
morrison hotel by the door is my must have desert island album. first heard it on 8 track, have it on vinyl, wore out 2 cassettes, and have the cd and mp3’s of it.
Hey on the wiretapping thingy, I went through the comments (not very charming) but one commenter pointed out that this is just a “stay” on the case. perhaps PBO is waiting for holder to come on board…who knows?
I know, I know. the fisa vote isn’t encouraging, but this article may have a serious slant. so jury’s still out.
BTW, sorry I couldn’t find hte blair convo I referenced earlier, but I think it’s buried in comments in EW’s place.
yeah, and I doubt Hillary or anybody else would ignore reports of increased intel activity about an attack on the US like Condi did with Clarke and Mueller. ugh. another bushie I despise.
Does anyone know a Kasey Chambers song about how she’ll take the lock off her door, take the numbers off her house, etc.? Australian country singer. I can’t find it and those are the only words i know.
In 1970 Mayall played at a ‘converted’ warehouse in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty section (I can still feel the cold floor through my Landlubbers), a great musical event, and a great recollection now.
One more night in the box so keep the music hot and the debate hotter…and a couple more logs on the fire would help out here on the frozen tundra, sheeeit it’s fuckin’ cold again!!
Now the last few days have been the most confusin’ for this ol’ broken down granmpa since puberty and hell it’s been so long since I had a testosterone rush I’m wonderin’ if it all might not be a dream…anyways I’m confused because as each day passes in the new Obama world I get the feelin’ that the Germans were extremely lucky that they had foreign armies occupy their post-Nazi country and help ‘em detoxify…we are in BIG trouble because the fascist infrastructure is not only still in place but our new President is rapidly becomin’ aware of how deep the rot has progressed into all of our institutions. We simply can not whistle a happy tune and reach out our hands in bipartisan delusion lest we end up with no arms. We need at least 2 years of special prosecutors and at least 20-30 major trials in order to simply get us to the point that we ken clear away the rubble and get a look at how bad the damage really is.
Torture, and treason trials and felony convictions for illegal surveillance or we ken kiss our 200 year old Republic good by…it will be as distant a memory as my heroic days of hormone happiness.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE WAR IS A LONG WAY FROM OVER!!
it was disturbing to hear John Dean tell Keith on Countdown tonight that Bush may have signed secret pardons, there’s no requirement that he announce them, but they could pop up if any of the pardonees were prosecuted…
New York state is not a state where a pro-gun, anti-gay rights, mostly pro-life Democrat wins a Democratic primary. If she were to lose the primary, her political career would be absolutely shattered. She will not be able to go back to her House seat if she loses this primary. Same goes for the general election. If 2010 is a bad year for Democrats(which I am expecting it will be), she could well lose to a Republican do to antipathy from downstate Democrats.
i think dean was talking about the theoretical possibility of it could happen – which ties in with his closing about the almost limitless power of the presidency regarding pardons
One:
Secret from the new President? Because Obama, a Democrat, is not entitled to the same security clearances that Chimpy, an ignoramus, is…
Two:
Has anyone heard the outgoing clusterfuck explicitly say that there were no additional pardons? Does Shooter’s statement wrt to Libby actually answer that inquiry?
Olbermann asked if such a thing were possible, i.e., if such pardons would be valid. Dean said he thinks they would be valid, but they have no weight in foreign venues.
Has anyone heard the outgoing clusterfuck explicitly say that there were no additional pardons? Does Shooter’s statement wrt to Libby actually answer that inquiry?
I’ve not heard Bush say there are none, and I’m betting he has some. Bush is very careful about looking out for number one.
one: you would think that such pardons would have left traces in the Justice Department bureaucracy, unless boosh kept it within the white house and left no records…
two: have not heard him say that, and Cheeney’s statement re: Libby could have either been a smokescreen, or else boosh did not pardon Libby (perhaps out of spite for causing him so much trouble) but could have pardoned others…Addington, Yoo, Gonzo…
I’m not going to lose any sleep worrying about it, as Suz said it was all hypothetical on Countdown…anyway I’m sure boosh left plenty of other stinkbombs buried throughout his (former) administration…time will tell.
I jest wanned ta let the siblings here at FDL know that I got the nuclear stress results back today (my family practice doc got ‘em) and I’ve got a small island of ischemia in the superior atrial area of my ticker…I’ve got an appointment with the cardiologist at the hospital I work at (at least they have made an appointment for me, I go in on Monday) and I’m not certain where we’re goin with this thing but I’m used ta not knowin’ where I’m goin’…it can’t be “imminent” or they woulda had me on schedule for an arteriogram and a stent. I’m learnin’ more’n I ever wanned ta know about cardiology…sigh, now I don’t have any excuses ta lose this extra 40 pounds I’m carryin’.
There was/is a campaign to get Congress to pass an act to prevent this from happening. I wonder if an act was passed now, would it be retroactive?
***********
Worse, Bush may issue a preemptive “blanket” pardon, covering all officials within his administration without disclosing either the names of the officials involved or the crimes for which they are being absolved.
Congress can, however, stop this most objectionable action before it occurs. The American Freedom Campaign has proposed a Pardons Disclosure Act, which would force the president to specifically name any political appointees for whom pardons are granted along with the crime or crimes for which they are being pardoned.
It’s all irrelevant unless Obama is going to prosecute, which I believe he will not. But that a prosecutor puts a case together against say Rumsfeld and then at the last minute Bush pull out of his briefcase a pardon that he signed before witnesses on his way out the door.
But, as you point out, once a pardon is used, it’s no longer secret and then the person can no longer plead the fifth and foreign prosecutors can start prosecuting under the doctrine of universal jurisdiction.
i admit to a weakness for legal twists used to fork with the bad guys’ carefully laid plans. there is a karmic twist to that idea that just really appeals to my twisted sense of humor.
There was/is a campaign to get Congress to pass an act to prevent this from happening. I wonder if an act was passed now, would it be retroactive?
The president’s power of pardon is in the constitution, so as far as I can tell, congress can’t interfere; the only thing that counts are the supreme court rulings.
Pres. Obama (I love saying that!) has a lot on his plate, but I’m sure he has a justice department that can move forward to prepare whatever necessary to clean up the messes left by the former administration. Good minds there — get on with it. Push some buttons; flush out the potential left-over-liarness; get on with cleaning up the mess. Just move on.
No kidding. Pardon Libby (making him eligible to regain his license to practice law), compel him to testify, thereby making his bar card not worth the paper it’s printed on, and having him on the record, even if he has “no memory” of said events.
which leads to the ? – re a pardon from a president who is later convicted for the same crime and offense the pardon was issued for – is that pardon still valid or is it invalidated upon his conviction?
a dayamed if ya do and dayamed if ya don’t kinda legal plot twist that happens in fiction – but i sure would love to see it played out in real life just to watch the head fuck.
Chris, I agree 100 percent with Lynn on this. Whether you agree or not, my strong sense is the Obama campaign, the Obama presidency is not at all interested in going back and relitigating these things or litigating them for the first time, frankly. That is not something they`re interested in doing. I think Lynn is 100 percent right, that they view this as a sop to the left with Guantanamo, and they`re not going to go back in and look at Cheney, Rumsfeld and President Bush. They`re not interested in doing it.
i was laughing out loud on the deck when she (and bob) drove big blue into the back of spiro’s dad’s car (leaving no damage to big blue ‘natch) and ranger and tank running out wtih their guns drawn, see what she has done and ranger says ‘ babe’.
the best ending she has done. i cant wait to read 12
And, I’m hopeful that we won’t get dragged off track by the ridiculous-right (”is Obama really president if the oath isn’t exact?!”)…….common sense should prevail. Just take the liars to task and put them in their place. Flip someone; listen to the whistleblowers who may now feel safe enough to talk; get Gonzo/Fredo on the hot seat. Just do it. Clean up the mess. Scoop up the poop and throw it out. Just do it.
the right is kinda slow to figure out that there is a new sheriff in town and he is cleaning house.
their old tricks don’t work with this administration – something they did not learn in the general. they still act as if it was the 90’s and they can drag out all that nasty anti-clinton tactics from back then, change the name to obama and use them at will.
they really think they can make it work – i kinda feel sorry for their stupidity.
And Turley is right on the money – how we proceed with a confessed war crime is ALL that determines the continued disgrace and festering of resentment, or the reinstatement of our moral authority. It really is that simple.
either we are what we claim to be or we are not. time to be brutally honest with ourself as a country, find out wtf happened, punish those that need to be punished, and take steps to make dayam sure it does. not. happen. again.
IT’s not too Late to DIGG IT!
Nite Pups and all the best to you Norski, my sweetie had a stent put in in June and then had a mild heart attack end of September, she is doing fine, getting plenty of exercise and had her LDL down to 74.
I know you can do Norski ya just have to do what Dr says and stick to it… (((Norski)))
If it is as you suspect – that Obama would be unlikely to investigate in the absence of a calamitous general strike or similar uprising from Americans – he would have to be persuaded that the cost of NOT pursuing would be internationally grievous. Not what Hillary had in mind when she said “Yes.”
Say Germany indicts and requests demands extradition, and most of our European allies support Germany.
Also, right now, per Glenzilla, “a majority of Americans (50-47%) believe that the Obama administration should investigate whether the Bush administration’s treatment of detainees was illegal.” But the sentiment for prosecution may increase as more information is disclosed.
But what’s on my mind is that I watched part of a TV bio of Jane Pauley with my wifey. Back in the day of Jane, Tom Brokaw, Gene Shallit & [Willard Scott?], I watched them a lot. Jane was a favorite to my young mind.
One of the comments about Jane’s interviews is that she always made people feel comfortable. Dang. Its OK to comfort the afflicted, as long as you have the good sense to afflict the comfortable when appropriate. Katie Couric can do that occasionally, as she did in the Sarah Palin interview, but Rachel Maddow is the best I’ve seen lately. Except that she does her interviews so cheerfully that she probably makes her guests feel comfortable, too.
I must admit, the 50+ Jane Pauley looked awfully good to me. But still, for my tastes now, she is just too nice to be a good journalist. There doesn’t seem to be any edge to her at all.
Hey, I’ve got something on my mind. I accidentally got myself embroiled in the F%cking Stupid Resolution 8602 that Wa. state senate passed while we were all blissed out yesterday morning. Supporting Israel in democracy.
I’ve no idea if that links. Been practicing on sending links to my e-mail. Looked better on my e-mail! Sorry.
I’m in contact with the Democrat Caucus on this abomination of a bill. Actually, many staffers encouraged me to pursue an apology/or rescinding of this STUPID f*cking joke.
I’m collecting names and statements, and hopefully will post on Oxdown Gazzette.
I”m actually awed by the response from our senate and their staffers. We need to keep this bad, evil idea in the forefront.
I remember Jane well, and some of those interviews survive in bio-pics on MSNBC.
She was not a kid (Couric) or a fool (Couric) – she was an intelligent journalist and a pleasure to watch.
your practice shows – ya almost got it that time openhope. emailing links to yourself is a great way to learn to link and get comfy with the steps involved. pretty soon, it will be old hat to ya and off ya go :)
Try… http://apps.leg.wa.gov/documen…..lls/Senate Resolutions/8602-Israel’s democracy.pdf
HOW DO YOU GUYS DO THESE LINKS?? I’m sooooo stupid!!!
But, that said, the Dem.Caucus guy and our senator left messages on my voice mail. May be linkin’ stupid but they call me back!!!!
when you are at the page, use your right mouse button to click on the url up top in the toolbar. a menu should pull down (if you are on a pc) with several options. select copy – it will copy the entire url.
Sure, I liked her a lot. Married to the Doonesbury artist/writer.
If you get someone to relax, maybe they’ll let slip something good. If they’re stiff and on guard, you get nothing. (I’m totally guessing here.)
using the right mouse and copying via that option will make sure you get all the url and don’t have to scroll all the way to the right to get the last bits
I never learned any other way than this:
left click your mouse and going from the beginning of the URL up where it begins http, highlight the entire thing. Press Control and the letter c, one after the other.
Then put your cursor in the message box or email, and left click, then press Control and the letter v.
It should take a couple tries but then you’ll have it.
I’m on a mac that I use as an expensive typewriter/research tool. When the youngbloods aren’t around I’m totally helpless!!
Oh,well.
I can grow enough organic vegetables to give them away.
I can enjoy our youngbloods and respect that it’s their day.
I can be outraged and talk to my politicians today.
Oh,yeah.

Suz & newtonusr,
Yes, those are the characteristics I remember, too. I would have liked to have her as a sister, I think. Wasn’t her forte human interest interviews rather than news interviews? I remember ambiance much more than content.
True, but BEING real, as opposed to ACTING real, is a distinction with a big difference. Jane was people, that came through, and you knew she was looking for insights and not embarrassing details…
As I recall.
I bought the whole consumer friendly warrantee/personal teaching time thingy when we got this machine. Which I love. it was supposed to be a family outing to the Apple Store for info, then over to PF Changs[sp?] for lunch.
That didn’t happen. Without the youngbloods to interpret what the geeks said……I’m lost.
I may have to take myself out to lunch and a tutorial……….
Suzie-Q!

Hey, I saw a discussion somewhere (EW?) on reasons why Blair might have had to give a weasely answer to the waterboarding question. I’ll try to find

I swear, the more I think about it, the more I see the genius in Hillary as SoS. Barack and Joe are miles ahead of everyone.
yeah, and I doubt Hillary or anybody else would ignore reports of increased intel activity about an attack on the US like Condi did with Clarke and Mueller. ugh. another bushie I despise.
Damn you! I was just about to fall asleep! Here’s some Karan Casey.
Here’s a link to Scott Horton’s article about Hillary’s arrival at State.
name made me think of this
Does anyone know a Kasey Chambers song about how she’ll take the lock off her door, take the numbers off her house, etc.? Australian country singer. I can’t find it and those are the only words i know.
i know of and like kasey chambers.. those lyrics are ringing a bell – when i dive into the utubes for sat’s toon, i’ll keep my eye out for that song
Sounds like Lucinda Williams “Changed the Locks”.
In 1970 Mayall played at a ‘converted’ warehouse in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty section (I can still feel the cold floor through my Landlubbers), a great musical event, and a great recollection now.
Thanks!
I was thinking Lucinda also, couldn’t think of the title…
according to Wiki, Kasey was supporting act for Lucinda on a tour…maybe one of them borrowed the song from the other?
Wikipedia Kasey Chambers
That’s it! Thanks. Drives me crazy when I can’t remember lyrics, which is most of the time.
glad ya enjoyed it aitchd
Music triviadoes will know why I’m posting Dirty Little Town.
ya stumped me – but that is some nice pedal steel – the best tho, is this guy
Dirty little Town is a Kieran Kane song. Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris sing background.
Bedtime. Good night folks.
thanks mrwhy
“Changed the Locks” was on the album “Lucinda Williams” and was written by her.
g’nite mrwhy
An here I was starting to think that maybe I had misjudged Obama.

Someone may ask their flacks and…
“By the way, where IS all that gold that used to be in Fort Knox?”
*removes tin foil hat*
if, and its a big if to me, there were secret pardons, they would no longer be secret once used – a to be used in case of indictment kinda thing.

Yikes… I trust Dean on such things. And the no pardons thingie doesn’t ring right.
dood, diet and exercise (all approved by your doc of course) will help get rid of that extra 40
fingers and toes crossed for ya norske
your one:
DOJ is not always consulted, and if I read Marcy correctly, the President is not obliged to consult with anyone when deciding pardons.
your two:
Deniability is maintained by – exclusion from those that might be asked. There is little chance that Shooter would not be asked about Libby.
g’nite neuro
All the evidence he needs is a couple of witnesses that he signed them before Obama took the oath.
And he may not have even told Cheney about them.
And the minute he announces them, Libby loses his fifth-ammendment right to not testify, unless he explicitly declines the pardon.
There was/is a campaign to get Congress to pass an act to prevent this from happening. I wonder if an act was passed now, would it be retroactive?

Yup it’s still valid. The president’s power to pardon is plenary, “except in cases of impeachment.”
But post-term impeachments have occurred and seem to be accepted notion in legal circles.

I know you can do Norski ya just have to do what Dr says and stick to it…

Shit #@*@#@ DIGG IT

If it is as you suspect – that Obama would be unlikely to investigate in the absence of a calamitous general strike or similar uprising from Americans – he would have to be persuaded that the cost of NOT pursuing would be internationally grievous. Not what Hillary had in mind when she said “Yes.”
Judging from what happened at state, whistle blowers may bust the floodgates. Another reason to like Podesta. Not so much Gates..
Some comfort remembering how Gates handled the reeky Barksdale nukes thing.
looking at the way hrc was greeted at state, i think there are some whistles to be blown there too
Say Germany indicts and
requestsdemands extradition, and most of our European allies support Germany. Also, right now, per Glenzilla, “a majority of Americans (50-47%) believe that the Obama administration should investigate whether the Bush administration’s treatment of detainees was illegal.” But the sentiment for prosecution may increase as more information is disclosed.
I’m going to turn in now.
G’nite folks.
g’nite wigwam
nite wigwam
And the career folks at DOJ – surely they’re ripe.
i think the r’s really fear the light of accountability over at justice – what other reason for the stalling tactics the forkers are doing.
classic stalling for time while hoping and praying for a miracle to prevent what ya know is eventually gonna happen.
Geez! A heavy duty late night conversation!
Anyone else remember her?

We need to keep this bad, evil idea in the forefront.
i remember her. young, eager, kinda like the lady next door friendly and smart.
I remember Jane well, and some of those interviews survive in bio-pics on MSNBC.
She was not a kid (Couric) or a fool (Couric) – she was an intelligent journalist and a pleasure to watch.
your practice shows – ya almost got it that time openhope. emailing links to yourself is a great way to learn to link and get comfy with the steps involved. pretty soon, it will be old hat to ya and off ya go :)
looking forward to reading your diaries.
Try…

HOW DO YOU GUYS DO THESE LINKS?? I’m sooooo stupid!!!
But, that said, the Dem.Caucus guy and our senator left messages on my voice mail. May be linkin’ stupid but they call me back!!!!
when you are at the page, use your right mouse button to click on the url up top in the toolbar. a menu should pull down (if you are on a pc) with several options. select copy – it will copy the entire url.
you are not getting all the url in your copying
Sure, I liked her a lot. Married to the Doonesbury artist/writer.
If you get someone to relax, maybe they’ll let slip something good. If they’re stiff and on guard, you get nothing. (I’m totally guessing here.)
sorry, not pull down but pop up.
using the right mouse and copying via that option will make sure you get all the url and don’t have to scroll all the way to the right to get the last bits
I never learned any other way than this:
left click your mouse and going from the beginning of the URL up where it begins http, highlight the entire thing. Press Control and the letter c, one after the other.
Then put your cursor in the message box or email, and left click, then press Control and the letter v.
It should take a couple tries but then you’ll have it.
you will find the way that works best for ya openhope. margot, i remember when you could not link. hell, i remember when i could not link.
Oh,yeah.
a mac – there is bound to be a pup here who can tell ya how to do it on a mac openhope. i hear it is very easy compared to the pc version.
Links on a Mac:
•Select the url you want with your pointer
•Pull down the “Edit” menu, select “Copy”
•Highlight the text in your comment that you want to apply the link to
•Click ONCE on the “chain” icon above the text entry area of the comment box
•Delete any text already in the field, pull down the “Edit” menu, select “Paste”, hit the “Return” key
*Preview your comment
Suz & newtonusr,
Yes, those are the characteristics I remember, too. I would have liked to have her as a sister, I think. Wasn’t her forte human interest interviews rather than news interviews? I remember ambiance much more than content.

hey newton – knew a mac pup would come through :)
True, but BEING real, as opposed to ACTING real, is a distinction with a big difference. Jane was people, that came through, and you knew she was looking for insights and not embarrassing details…
As I recall.
Would I be correct in assuming you’re a Mac-er? *g*
openhope @ 136 – ahhh…..but you had the wisdom to chose a Mac. :-) I am *so* in your boat with the “expensive typewriter/research tool”.
*ducking from pillows being thrown by the PC people*
hahahahaha its those mac types ya gotta watch out for (ducking)
DOJ stuff may involve sitting critters.. for anyone who doesn’t care to retire, it’s gonna be let’s make a deal time.
holy crap, attaturk is upstairs. my time at the lake flew for me tonight pups, thank you for hanging out with me.
g’nite all
nite suz

I bought the whole consumer friendly warrantee/personal teaching time thingy when we got this machine. Which I love. it was supposed to be a family outing to the Apple Store for info, then over to PF Changs[sp?] for lunch.
That didn’t happen. Without the youngbloods to interpret what the geeks said……I’m lost.
I may have to take myself out to lunch and a tutorial……….
P.S. I adore “Room to Move”. Can only hear it in my head as a former youngblood!! Saw Mayall many times.
Damn Dial-up!!!
