For those of you still wondering why so many of us lefty bloggers hate the media in general, and Howie Kurtz in particular, this one sentence from Howie’s Media Notes column pretty much says it all:
If journalists don’t start holding the 44th president accountable — in the same way the left wanted us to hold George W. Bush accountable — we will have defaulted on our mission.
Shorter Howie: Failure to apply a double standard would be a gross dereliction of duty.
I especially like the admission that he and the rest of the media completely blew off progressive criticism over the last eight years… but now is the time to buckle down and do some serious digging.
Look, I’m not opposed to investigative journalism that holds government accountable, I’m just frustrated when it’s only in vogue during Democratic administrations. Worse yet, it usually goes beyond investigative journalism and veers headlong into sensationalistic tabloid journalism. All I ask is that the media report mountains as mountains, and molehills as molehills.
Of course, as long as the media and their parent corporations are owned by Republicans, and operated by Republicans, and benefit financially from Republican government, I’m not going to hold my breath. Look for a lot more Wright, Ayers, Blago, and Rezko stories over the next four years, as well as "exploring" the Obama angle of any Illinois corruption scandal that might crop up. I can hardly wait.

Ah Eli, great minds and all that as evidenced by my diary on this from earlier today (not that I’m diary whoring or anything).
Mr Sherry Annis is just another gooper trophy husband
what would you expect?
My bold this begs the Question why didn’t the Media and Howie in particular hold Bush accountable?
Just how compartmentalized is Howie’s mind? Logic Loops should shut down his mind if he ever thought about what he says.
If he ever compared what he said in the past about Bush to what he has said about Obama.
Good Diary!
Tweety (NBC) just went after a guest who cited blogs…Tweety said, Don’t talk to me about bloggers…we don’t do that here..we want real journalism with real sources..
Andrea Mitchell was on this morning saying that, because POTUS had to re-take his oath..that the EOs wouldn’t be valid, because they were signed before that…
It’s starting already…the tables are turning..getting ready for the next revolution of power.
Yeah, I actually asked the editors whether my post was even necessary…
Howie’s mission is to stir the pot….just like they all do.
This is what infuriates me the most. “Yeah, the liberals wanted us to report on the Bush administration, but we told them to take a hike. But we need to get down to business now!”
Barn door, meet horse’s ass retreating off into the distance.
Thank You
I think Howie is more conventional-wisdom peddler and apologist than shit-stirrer. His job isn’t to piss people off, it’s to make right-wing corporate media spin sound measured and reasonable.
Well, it sure can’t hurt to have multiple folks pointing out what an idiot Howie is in all his Hacktacular glories.
A lot of the commenters at the WaPo0 are also pointing out his double standard.
Not that it will make any difference to them.
while I want obama held to account, it is indeed frustrating to see these wingnuts ignore anyone who was in their “party”
I kind of believe however obama will do SO well that the wingnuts will see the light of day
daylight is the cure for some of them
That is true…very true.
Open barn door, insert head.
Actually, it’s probably unfair to call Howie a shill for corporate media. He lurves him some Michelle Malkin too.
I think Republicans have reached peak enlightenment. Even with a right-leaning media, gross Republican failures are still a lot harder for them to ignore or rationalize away than Democratic successes.
Especially when they can attribute everything that goes right over the next 4-8 years to the magnificent groundwork laid down by Dubya and the Republican Congress.
see that?
here’s what howie and wingnutania do not understand
“the left” will pressure to hold the 44th president to account just as we did the 43rd
we are indeed the patriots and protectors of our constitution, we are guardians, keepers, watchdogs…this is our lot
Somebody needs to flush the toilet.
Yes, but the bit of jiu-jitsu that they will perform is that when we start complaining about the latest “Obscure Illinois Politician’s Corruption Woes Raise Renewed Questions About President Obama” story, they’ll respond, “What, I thought you *wanted* us to hold the president accountable?”
As I said at dakine’s post, I am a big Obama critic but Kurtz’s statement is just brainless.
I devoted my blog today to Howie or, as I much prefer to call him MR. SHERI ANNIS.
It must NEVER be forgotten that Mrs. Howie is a MAJOR REPUBLICAN OPERATIVE.
Among her achiebvements — Installing the Governator of Califonia.
The BLATANT CONFLICT-OF-INTEREST embidied by Howie and the Mrs. has never been discussed by the “Mainstream” media, which he rolls like an old whore scamming an extra “couple of dollars” (Mafia-speak for a hundred) off a coventioneer.
Well, we knew it would happen. We demanded for 8 years that the ROM (republican owned media) report the back story to the story, but they didn’t, and now that they are, they’re STILL catering to the right wingers. I’m telling you….WE CANNOT ALLOW THE RIGHT WINGERS TO CONTINUE THEIR BULLSHIT. Instead of spending our days lambasting everything Barack Obama is or isn’t doing, we should be holding the media to account and the other blowhards online who are trying to shape the national psyche NOW to “prove” that Barack is worse than George Bush ever thought of being! Maddening!
here’s the thing eli;
everything that went wrong for reagan was carter’s fault, everything that went right under reagan goes to reagan’s credit
everything that went wrong to bush senior was carters fault
everything that went right for clinton goes to reagans credit, everything that went wrong goes to clinton
everything that went wrong for bush jr is clinton’s fault, anything that went right was reagans doing, (errr…never mind on that last one, nothing went right)
Republicans are psychotic.
It’s high time we started treating them as such.
Wrong! the MSM like Howie does not investigate. They repeat GOP talking points which may have been investigated or they may have been made up.
Hacks like Howie and Judy Miller do not research the truth of what their GOP anonymous sources say.
Propaganda Monkey, Hand Puppets just read the Script!
Proof that the Propaganda Monkey, Hand Puppets don’t investigate the news is the fact that every GOP operative on every TV show is on script prepared to talk about the approved story of the day.
Its like Karl sends everybody Propaganda Monkey, Hand Puppet a secret message every day!
The GOP is to coordinated for it to be coincidence!
Its hard to believe that every news show is working on the exact same story and decides to lead with that story.
And reach the same conclusions as every other MSM TV host! And ask the same questions about the scandal!
Stepford
WivesReporters?Look Good for the Camera says anything you want!
The media’s biggest challenge will be sorting out what’s Obama’s fault vs. what’s Clinton’s fault.
I commented over at the WaPo0 and realized as I was typing that in fact, Howie is showing there is no “double standard” in Howie’s eyes. He and the rest of the GOoPer media will in fact hold Obama to the same standard as they did Clinton and would hold any Democratic President, that is subject to the same level of faux scandals designed to make it as difficult as possible to actually govern.
The GOP blogs might have been making up rumors I didn’t hear anything on the Lefty Blogs about this.
Tweety should not lump us in with those hacks.
You’re right, that was poor word choice on my part. I should have said something like “…when the *semblance* of it is only in vogue during Democratic administrations…”
Although, in my defense, saying that investigative journalism *is* in vogue during Democratic administrations isn’t exactly the same as saying that it’s actually *practiced*….
I also pointed out that the business model of the MSM is in crash and burn mode and the refusal of Kurtz and the WaPo to engage in real journalism is the major reason why. People would buy papers and advertizers would advertize in them if their principal content was not this narcissistic Kurtzian BS.
Credibility is the most valuable thing a news media outlet has. Once that’s compromised, people will look elsewhere to find out what’s really going on. The media consequently has to walk a fine line between turd-polishing and reporting just enough reality to stay credible. They may have miscalculated – I sure hope they have.
We expect journalists to be accountable. It is unfortunate that Kurtz is not one. Howie is a corporate lobbyist and stealth neo-con, whose job is to bash the “left”. So Kurtz pretending to be a journalist, is mere malpractice. The Post is a dying piece of propaganda serving the DeeCee village idiots.
For example, remember Mark Foley, Howie. Some other journalists have discovered MAF54 is making a comeback. You missed it the first time around and you missed it again. MAF54 is looking for online dates again. Howie, are you available?
laugh

loud
I was talking to someone last week and he actually said the following;
“of course things will improve under obama, anyone would have improved things after bush
if things continue as bad as they are that makes him really bad, if anything goes right that has nothing to do with him”
and he was not snarking me, he really and truly felt those sentiments
It is time to set aside childish things…
I hope Obama appoints good people to bring back the 4th estate, fairness and accuracy in reporting, and regulation of corporations in regards to the media in general.
The airwaves are public airwaves, and for too long, they have been usurped by right-wingers to the detriment of our society.
Time to set aside the children, too…like Howie Kurtz. They’re going to be relegated to the kids table, and hopefully, the Helen Thomases of American journalism will step in and do their fucking jobs.
Tweety: Cheney should want Scooter to be happy and not turn into an author…because Scooter knows what Cheney did.
Ouch.
Howie has not heard that we Left Wing Bloggers were right about everything and Bush/Howie were wrong about everything.
Howie’s Cred is based on his TV show and Propagandaist/Reporter job.
His Cred disappears when people pay attention to what he says enough to remember what Howie was saying 4 years ago.
Under the Social Dynamic that enough Viewers after 9/11 are paying attention to what Howie says and complain to their friends when Howie goes against Reality and or What he has said Previously.
Well then you get a snowball effect that explains why the MSM stock prices were tanking before the bank bailout 2 wars and a Presidential Election to drive News Viewing.
Minor Mistake I like anyone taking down the MSM.
The MSM mistakes is what keeps the Lefty Blogs growing. How are the righty blogs doing?
Eli, this is very simple to understand. Republicans sign the paychecks of Kurtz and the others.
Tell your friend the market still has a ways to drop to get to Great Depression levels.
Business Cycles happen and we are powerless to change them is drivel. Actions matter but for too long Chicago School Actions or half Measures like Carter did proved inaction is not action.
FDR put the country back to work cut government spending and raised taxes on the rich to defend the Dollar and prevent inflation.
Carter needed to put people to work.
I got the impression that Howie is well aware that we were proved fucking right, he just doesn’t care.
Ah a Willing Whore.
And this brings up another quote I like:
Yes, I find that Sinclair quote explains an awful lot, if not everything.
Did you also see Tweety ask Jello Jay and Kit Bond if they thought the higher ups in the Bush administration should be prosecuted? I was shocked that he asked the question. Later in the show when he was talking with Lynn Sweet and Chris Cilliza he brought it up again. Naturally Lynn and Chris said that Obama doesn’t want to look back – yadda, yadda, yadda. Matthews responded that if we prosecuted the low level torturers we should prosecute those that authorized it. I can hardly wait to read the transcript. It’s not very often I compliment Matthews but tonight he deserves it.
Is it just me or are the wingnuts out in force today?
Now I have to listen to former Gov of VA (R) talk about class warfare. Talking points: the top 2% of the US population pay 40% of the income tax; we shouldn’t apologize to the world for capitalism (in re consuming most of the world’s resources). ugh.
I’m a little scared to look into Pandora’s box, too. the wiretapping of media shocked me, then to learn Rockefeller was tapped too. OMG>
Yes. Also, the Jay Rockefeller admission to Tweety that Bushco spied on everybody, responding to a question about the Tice assertions, and he said they spied on everybody…”including me”…”I didn’t get any letters” Raw Story is working on it.
This is huge. It shows that Bushco was unlawfully looking for leverage to get their way in Congress.
don’t you think the role advertisers play is also important?
Yes. I find it amazing that people are now openly admitting that torture took place and that it was “authorized” at the highest levels. takes my breath away.
The wingnuts are in super, duper crisis mode…now they have an administration, with legally knowledgable people in control, that are not fooling around about changing stuff…lots of hand wringing on the right…
Now, they are saying stuff such as we will be attacked and Obama will be blamed as being soft on terra, etc., etc., etc.,…the usual culprits…we’re all gonna die, and it’s the Dems’ fault. That will be the next four year mantra…
Yawn.
I’ll bet 2012 will be Cornyn/Palin…
Bwahahahaha….stupidest ticket in history..
To a much lesser degree. News media ad revenue is a drop in the bucket compared to the overall parent corporation’s revenue. I think they’d be perfectly willing to sacrifice some ad revenue as a tradeoff for policies wildly favorable to the parent.
I want them to talk about it, but not opposed! I want a real Liberal around though to rebut them not the Juan Williams always lose to the GOP in an argument Liberal.
Too many of the Democratic Pundits on TV are paid to take a dive.
Why does the MSM always let GOPers talk about class warfare uninterrupted, or against Fake Dems paid to take dive?
Because the MSM is bought and paid for!
Also, most of the advertisers tend to be fairly conservative corporations themselves, so any avoidance would probably be with respect to overt hate radio.
I think you meant “not unopposed” you want argument when they fling their poo?
But seriously, it is crazy. This heeby jeeby reaction to having terrorists on our own soil, locked up, is just insane. Why not keep them where we can keep an eye on them? My guess is we don’t want to see what WE are doing.
Truly, this unabated criminality in our WH, well, I’m having quite the nauseous after effects.
Howard Kurtz:
Is this stupidity, or is it snark? I have a hard time believing that Kurtz is this stupid. I’d prefer to think that he simply has a twisted sense of irony.
Time Warner Howie’s employer 10 year stock chart Google finance. Under Bill Clinton Time Warner was at $91.43 a share after the stock split.
Today Time Warner $9.33 a share
http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3ATWX
I hope Howie had TimeWarner in his retirement portfolio! Remember How Howie went after Bill Clinton?
I wonder if Propaganda Monkey Hand Puppet Howie has looked at his stocks?
I wonder if he cries at night after a fight with the wife after he has to tell his wife that they can’t afford a new Porsche this year.
I wonder if he ever blames his wife for being a GOPer and backing Bush for their drop in wealth?
Just how much has the Dollar droped in value during the Bush years?
Thanks Your right:)
I knew there’d be some in the MSM saying the EO’s aren’t valid … what idiots !
… oh wait, that’s a prerequisite for their jobs …
Oh Howie.
Possibly the worst affront to my own length nannying was a post about Ailes on Kurtz:
http://firedoglake.com/2006/04/28/reliable/
Vintage Ailes:
From March 25, 2006
Dear Howard Kurtz,
I look forward to your endless stream of chin-pulling articles and teevee appearances explaining how the hiring of unqualified conservatives is harming the Washington Post and the newspaper industry in general.
Please be sure to prattle on incessantly about “the perception, at least, of a double standard” at the Post for hiring a plainly unqualified white man.
Please wonder aloud, ad nauseam, if a “50 year old hack” who was African-American would have been given a job over a “promising young white” blogger.
Ask whether Mr. Domenech was an “affirmative-action hire” every chance you get.
These matters demand your full attention.
For the next three weeks, minimum.
Cordially yours,
Roger Ailes
They are not even original liars they all say the same thing on every channel over and over again the guy who said 300 Channels and nothings on must have been watching the news.
They are not even good liars if people are paying attention you can’t contradict yourself to often.
Jeebus, are we in the twilight zone ? Shuster lets Cantor spew his lies without rebuttal and Tweety is grilling Kit Bond but good.
makes sense. thanks. i guess the ad thing is more of an issue for the stand alone media operation.
“If journalists don’t start holding the 44th president accountable — in the same way the left wanted us to hold George W. Bush accountable – we will have defaulted on our mission.”
I find Kurtz to be masterful in this sentence construction. When one deciphers what he is saying, it reads like this:
“If journalists don’t start holding the 44th president accountable — in the same way the left wanted us to hold George W. Bush accountable (and never did for 8 long years) – we will have defaulted on our mission (to treat Democratic politicians completely differently than Republican ones).”
He is openly telling the world that Serious Journalists MUST work under a double-standard: Democrats are to be excoriated, Republicans are to be exonerated; Democrats can do nothing right, Republicans can do nothing wrong. If Journalists do NOT have a double-standard, “we will have defaulted on our mission”.
Kurtz is admitting that mainstream American Journalism is biased to the far-right and is nothing more than a propagandistic outlet for the Republican Party.
Very nice the way you read between the lines.
Now if we can only pose that question to Howie or any serious Journalist on TV!
That and we must a void the shouting or long winded attempts the MSM uses to deflect attention when they are in trouble.
We need another Jon Stewart on Crossfire moment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Stewart
More from the “This is not news category” … Mark McGuire took Steroids, says estranged brother
No Sh*t, Sherlock !
Adding insult to injury, the Snooze Media apparently believe the most important story right now is why Caroline Kennedy withdrew from consideration for a Senate appointment. If she’s not going to be a Senator, why should anybody care?
My seven year old daughter, after listening to me shouting at CNN anchors for the last several years, asks me whenever the news is on, “Are they lying now?”
In the summer she said, “George Bush is a bad man!”
It’s not that I am raising a liberal, I am raising a woman that doesn’t blindly accept everything she’s exposed to from the media.
Thanks Eli.
WTF does right-left-center, etc. have to do with doing good journalism? Howie Kurtz is such a fucking douchebag. Why doesn’t he just go away? And take the rest of his douchebag cronies with him? He can start with Wolf “I’m So Fucking Important” Blitzer, and just work his way down the list…and across the cable outlets.
Andrea Mitchell? You mean Mrs. Alan Greenspan? Why doesn’t that old bat just go away? And take Tweety her. Please?
I would say that Tweety (etal) is jealous of bloggers because many of them are actually doing good journalism. Yes, I would say that, but to do so would be giving Tweety credit for actually having a thought in his tiny little pea brain, a dubious notion at best…
Eli:
Howard Kurtz poorly representing my story. Mike Stark went on CNN to discuss my story about having my blog shut down by ABC Radio/Disney.
He opened the show with some of the audio clips and then asked Mike “Don’t you like free speech?” He didn’t understand the story, didn’t bother to even understand the issue of fair use and didn’t even understand the First Amendment!
http://movies.crooksandliars.c…..mv?mid=139
I think Mike did a great job. I tried to prepare him for the appearance, and for Dan Reihl, but what I didn’t realize that the biggest obstacle to the successful telling of the story itself was Kurtz. Now if I ever have a chance to talk to Mr. Krutz I can totally give him grief because it was my story that he messed up.
(Oh and by the way, neither he nor his producer bothered to write me, call me or talk to me. Of course they probably had some rule that the don’t protect the privacy of anyone by “a high-ranking Republican White House source” who they will need to talk to again next week. I was an anonymous blogger and I could be ANYONE! Someone with an AGENDA! (As if all the right wing think tankers and Bush White House officials didn’t have agendas.)
We all knew that the “Clinton Rules” will be applying now that a Democrat is in office. It’s always okay to “bust on the blogger” when they are liberals. Just like it is always okay to “punch the hippie” in the democratic hierarchy.
Howie epitomizes a word he knows well: schmuck, which is the opposite of another word he knows well, and which describes Mr. Obama as well as schmuck describes George Bush, and that’s mensch.
Among the athletes and fraternity members I knew, we had a word for jerks. A few of them were OK because they had a sense of humor or could do some things well. We had another, more pejorative, word for those who were jerks but lacked the self-awareness to know it; they never had a sense of humor. Howie’s the latter. Except that he and gasbags like David Brooks know they are peddling a grossly hypocritical double standard. They keep on thinking of novel ways to do it, because it ups their paychecks. As for prizing knowledge, consistency and accuracy, they gave that up when they concluded that the honor code only applied to the other schmucks too dumb to report their own failings.
Howie Schmowie wouldn’t have dreamt of holding a Republican president to account. Certainly not in the manner and with the consistency DFH’s demanded for eight long years. He and his fellow Villagers set the bar so low for Poor George that he skated underneath it with a top hat and wearing pink cowboy clogs.
They will write as if they were holding President Obama to account, while simultaneously demanding that Bush and Cheney keep their free passes. But they will temper their demands, claiming that doing so is required by manners and good taste. It will really be because if they succeed in holding a president to account, someone might try doing the same to them.
Not acting in this rodent-on-a-wheel sort of way would get them in trouble with their fellow Villagers and the neocon press barons who pay them. No. 6 would have understood this intuitively. Be seeing ya.
and they get 60 percent of the income. Go figure.
And these media airheads wonder why newspapers are failing. My guess is Howie Kurtz, Deborah Howell and the rest of the clueless suits at the Washington Post (and other news outlets) think the average American citizen is as vapid and devoid of consistent thought patterns and principles as they are.
I for one hope the WaPo succeeds at discrediting themselves into oblivion.
