The Avett Brothers "Saint Joseph’s"
Dr. Wintley Phipps "Amazing Grace"
Enjoy a ride with The Avett Brothers who take their music to new heights by placing a stand up bass inside a gondola, just outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
For those who missed it this morning, I thought I would post Dr. Wintley Phipps wonderful performance of Amazing Grace at The National Cathedral.
What’s on your mind tonight?

Loving the new President…more please!
good evening ES
Dr Phipps has beautiful voice.
Amazing grace is a dirge. Inappropriate for these times.
And, like some jazz, to me, this form of performance is self indulgent.
Hi everyone!
Digg
Self indulgent.. Amazing Grace sung before a new President, Vice President, in the National Cathedral.
I like standards, but gee whiz.
Hiya ES and everyone!
Amazing music night. Amazing.
Well done, Eureka.
Dugg.
ES and pups. Evenin.
Good evening CE and SunnyN.
Thanks for the digg newtonusr. I wonder if the Avetts would like my placement of them with Dr. Phipps? I bet they would.
The Avett’s are cool as all get-out.
But Dr. Phipps – never heard it done this way. And ObamaNation continues to surprise.
And Chris – I was watching people being interviewed today – Man-on-the-Street sorta thing. Everybody they could find – spring in their steps, smiles, feeling like they can finally breathe.
Altogether an excellent first day of repealing the Bush administration.
Dugg too! Thanks so much for that from the National Cathedral, ES. Hope is alive. I even made the Obama cookies Scrubsmy (sp) shared Monday night. I’m no kitchen whiz, but as awful as these look, they really tasted good!
I ran into our library custodian, Rebecca, a very tall lady and me so short, we ran to each other to embrace and jump up and down. And talked and talked about yesterday. Being at home to watch from 10:00 a.m. to midnight was amazing. Today everyone at work had smiles.
How about something for the a…theist. Barack said we had rights too.
You are the coolest!
What fun, Loo Hoo!
ES…these guys the Avetts in redneck, roughneck neocon Jackson Hole lined with slots. What’s up here?
He did mention that we are a nation of all religions, including non-believers. It was a firstever!
Yes, newt,
we can breathe now. Breathe my friend.
LMAO, Bobby Weir put on a bow tie and played the Wheel. I hope better recordings are out there somewhere.
Religion as politics the fundies are happy…and Barack is too. Me separate church and state. All that neocan fundy talk by BushCo got us in these wars, the lies, the wall street rip offs all under the color of Religion. Sucks. Been down that path before.
Well, they are from North Carolina, so i don’t think they were to uncomfortable. Besides, Dick Cheney was probably in D.C. at the time.
One of my best moments yesterday — seeing the DICK in a wheelchair. Raspberries to him.
Cuteness galore!
I agree with that pint wholeheartedly. Guess I always considered Amazing Grace to be spiritual, but not necessarily religious. But my favorite church sang John Lennons – Imagine most every sunday.
So Shooter is .0001% of the way to knowing what so many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans know. Less the whole humanity thing.
Hmm. I thought it was rather an interesting arrangement.
I loved the beginning with the warm, deep, resonant sound of the humming together with the cello.
Bingo! May he suffer, the bastard.
Evening Ya’ll! ;-)
Aloha, ES! Long time no see, eh? ;-)
Suffer – nothing physical. His dreams, however – may they be vivid and realistic.
Welcome home, CT. Been on the mountaintop I hope?
Image fail is my hope for the dick.
Amazing Grace – simple words, simple tune – trying so hard to express the inexpressible, and when sung right, almost making it.
Point well taken…The Dead have a huge following glad they played.
The Talking Heads of MSM must certainly sound like they are in an echo chamber to most americans…hollow meanless tinny and insinsere.
Never watch TV anymore. Read science, research and see what my cerebral cortex can discover in general. LOtsa interesting stuff on the WWW. WE have access to all edu files, all Government studies, reports. news so much to be aware off. It is like a gigantic banquet hall catagorized by the library of congress…pick your menu.
I talk to official all over the USA if I like their data. My heart goes out to dial up.
Actually, they look pretty good.
I did love seeing all the people on the Mall. Such hopes for the future, young and old. The music was great and the look on the artists faces was priceless, all of them.
Did you see the aerial photo?
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Eureka Springs and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Back to work so ramp it up, keep the tunes and the arguments hot…is there gunna be enough pressure from us great unwashed out here so that President BO and the Senate will hafta pass a specific special prosecutor bill for at least torture and the illegal surveilance?
Any Edward Teller sightings lately…we gotta keep an eye open for him, he’s doin’ the Lord’s work up there with the red necked barbarians.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, NO ONE IS GUNNA FIGHT THIS ONE FOR US!!
Working hand to mouth cuts into my Lake time…! 8-(
Was up there last nite and headed up there tomorrow nite… Just woke up an hour or two ago…! Frigid conditions is a mild conotation…
Yes, I did see the aerial photo! Amazing.
It was interesting looking at the pictures from the Mall. People’s faces looked … unguarded and sort of vulnerable.
I think Obama and team did really well today. The criminals will be held to account at some point within the first four years, I think.
Aloha, Norske! ET was around on last nite’s LLN…!
Fern, there was a man, an older man standing at attention and saluting about 30 minutes before the swearing in ceremony. I took one look and balled like a baby.
Let’s hope so, Loo Hoo! I like Lederman’s OLC appointment so there is hope…! ;-)
I love religious music, art and costumes and consider them a huge part of our collective heritage. So long as no one tries to force their theology on us, I welcome their traditions.
Not certain that is consistent or makes sense. Hope so.
Loo Hoo,
I think he did REALLY, REALLY well today.
I’m not sure it will be done quite that directly (using a special prosecutor) but it I think it will get done.
Today’s executive order seemed like a shot over the bows.
CTuttle, I think about you often. Hand to mouth is the way so many Americans are making it these days. Bushco screwed up EVERYTHING.
My brother just got out of ICU for a blood clot in his leg. His employer had dropped medical insurance November first without letting the employees know. My brother is so screwed.
The employer then proceeded to vote for McCain. Fucking nuts.
Did I mention Dial-up Sux…! I can’t watch any vid whatsoever… :-(
I’m not quite that optimistic, but there’s hope. In any event, it was a good first day. He stopped all the last-minute directives the Bushies were issuing prior to leaving, he told the JCS to figure out how to withdraw from Iraq in 16 months, and made a try at stopping the tribunals for the Gitmo detainees.
He’s not wasting time.
Yes – one wonders about the story behind that and what the inauguration meant to him.
This is beautiful, the Amazing Grace. I loved the PBS Bill Moyers’s show about the song. Have you seen it?
He’s also creating confidence that he will follow up on the commitments he made during the campaign – giving people reasons to trust him – because these were all things he made big deals of.
It does suck, and I’m sorry about that. My kids made us get HDTV and all the whatever to use laptops and see video. I don’t even know what I’m paying for, but is it expensive and it works.
My fourth graders watched tv all day Tuesday (so I could). I’m still waiting for parent complaints! But I’m ready if anyone does.
I’m wondering if a revocation of an Executive order will nullify records secrecy, which were once under such protection? Or is it something which starts anew from this day forward?
Margot,
I saw a show many years ago about Amazing Grace, and it may have been Bill Moyers. Whatever, it was a wonderful show about an iconic song.
Yes, forgot to add that he called several leaders of the Muslim world today. That was a symbolic gesture, but it’s some big symbolism.
No. How did I miss that? I record all of his shows.
Classified records have to be unclassified. In general, that’s done by the agency that issued the documents. If the documents came from the White House, Obama can undo it quickly. If not, he may have a bit of persuading to do, but it should be possible, I think.
I’m thinking that what Obama said in his executive order today means that all presidential communications are open. Including GHWB’s Iran Contra stuff. Still waiting to hear from someone much smarter than me, though.
His actions today were as much for the rest of the world as they were for America.
hey all, I like it too. But boy, Tweety was sure confused by the ecumenical service as he freely admitted. “It’s hard to know what all these people believe!!”
duh, it’s that there is a power greater than oneself. (apologies to any atheist friends that disagree) but that’s one basic point about any religion and one point that many “believers” sometimes forget.
well, you know the rightards will say he did that because he is one…
kinda cool to have a president… Obama may not be a progressive, but he is a president, not a Caligula wannabe.
ET has a new diary at Oxdown.
LOL that’s very similar to what I was thinking…stalin.
The way I read it, it sounds like the decision to release records lies with the current president, not the president whose records are under consideration.
But I am the furthest thing from a lawyer.
“Today’s executive order seemed like a shot over the bows).
Indeed! I especially enjoyed this evening’s Chief Justice
dust up.story.I think he as close to a progressive as you will ever get given your political system – and the unbelievable amounts of money needed to run a competitive campaign.
It’s funny, I was doing google searches for a particular phrase Obama used in one of his books that had to do with religious beliefs. You wouldn’t believe how many different sites I ran into accusing him of being a closet Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic, whatever (I think the last one was facetious, but I’m not sure). I was hoping to find someone accusing him of being a Freemason. That phrase turned out to be here, by the way. I knew I’d seen that bit of the inaugural speech somewhere.
Missed that…
Oh, P.S., here was my reaction to the inaugural speech. I don’t get over here very often lately.
Nite All,
Work tomorrow. Be good to one another.
No offense taken! I sure know that there are powers greater than myself! My boss, Darrell Issa, Diane Feinstein, and now Barack Obama. The banks, the Feds, the IRS…the list goes on and on.
But I still love church music (The Old Rugged Cross) and spirituals, gospel music and bluegrass revival type music…
nite chris
Word Cloud Analysis of Obama’s Inaugural Speech Compared to Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Lincoln’s
Goodnight, Christine.
Nite Chris, I’m so distracted. see you tomorrow.
Nite newt, keep everyone in line, ok?
Moi? I’m more likely to drive the place into a tequila-induced stupor. But I’ll try!
Margot and Cujo,
Tomorrow guys!
G nite CE
Go figure… I’m having to fend off a snowball fight 500 feet from the beach here in the Isles from a cooler full of snow I brought down from the mountain this morn…! ;-)
That link doesn’t work for me. I’m prepared to believe it’s my problem (I’ve just installed a new Linux on distro this computer), but the URL just doesn’t look right.
Nighters Christine.
Yes that was it…i looked it up. It was in 1990.
link
Nice. I turned it on as soon as I awoke. Which was the instant Rev. Lowrey began speaking.
Yeah, it’s a bad link. sorry ES.
Sorry, try this Word Cloud.
Tweety is an idiot. Too bad he can’t put the world’s religions into neat sound bites..
Does that mean you missed Rev.
WingnutWarren?Citizen CTuttle:
Well Brother CT, if ya run short we got a bunch here in my neighborhood…ya ken take the below frezzin’ temps too if ya wanna.
I’m fairly eclectic in my music and my religion, *g*
Didn’t even see him on a rerun. *s* have no idea what he said.
A really sweet version of the Old Rugged Cross!
Now that is cool – I’ve never seen anything like it before.
The size of each word relates to how frequently the word was used in the sample, yes?
Citizen SunnyNobility:
I treally think that MSNBC is pushin’ Tweety up into Rachel and Keith and workin ‘im in between ‘em on special coverage in order to protect his ratings and kinda leverage offa the two of ‘em. And I think he’s gunna start draggin KO’s ratings down and if he does Olbermann will have ‘im fer breakfast ‘cuz he’s a bigger player now.
Tequila induced stupor?
I don’t believe that for a minute.
Ouzo, maybe.
I haven’t done tequila shooters for many years, but I’ll just bet you have something new!
That’s better. Funny how the modern day Republicans’ speeches are full of references to “liberty” and “freedom”, while they’re trying to curb both. The Democrats’ seem to emphasize people and commonality. At least, that’s what it seems at first blush. The clouds aren’t all drawn the same way, so it’s a bit hard to tell.
Fire back! It’s the American way.
That’s how I interpreted it. Lincoln’s was a dark speech. Reagan’s shaped like a bullet.
Nah, I rarely drink anymore, but tequila is where I really fall down. Takes very little to get me pretty stoopid.
That’s quite alright, citizen…! I do enjoy the sea level temps here…! ;-)
The computer is what I’m protecting…! ;-)
They’re all having a blast with the snow…! *g*
No! Tweets comes before Keith and Rachel. But, he comes after Schuster. Tweets has changed tunes noticibly in the last few months. I will give you that he sounds much more sincere now than he did while he was scared shitless of 1984 actually coming to be.
I give him no credit for preventing it, though.
I love the contrast. You really ought to photograph that.
Tweety was always a critic of the
warsoccupations, but only in the last few months has he really taken Chimpy to task. And in the past few weeks, it has been brutal.Boy you’re right there. He was no help at all.
Obama’s Reverend Wright speech seemed to be a turning point for Tweety. Maybe he got that old tingle in his leg again.
Ya got a camera I can use..? ;-)
Tweety is hopeless. Really. And his shtick is tired.
That speech is a little lost in the fog of the campaign, but it will be regarded as one of the finest he ever wrote/gave, and ever given in a campaign setting. It was an immense achievement.
If they get close to busting him he will just turn off the pacemaker.
LOL. Find a student!
Hot Chillys dude…
It was good, it did seem to revive Tweety’s ‘tingle’…! ;-)
Okay, I think that Rachel morally intimidates both Tweety and Buchanan. Perhaps she reminds them of their favorite nuns from gradeschool.
Hey gonna go positives…if you like him that is a very good omen from the “Great Spirit”. That hard labor is doing you some good.
Because it turned around a rough spot in his campaign, historians are likely to compare it to Nixon’s Checkers speech. ;-) But I agree that it was a masterpiece, and not at all Nixonian.
Classic. Roker is going to find a bird’s head in his bed after that one.
Right. I recall thinking at the time that Jesse’s speech after the remarks in, was it ‘84, was nothing in comparison.
Thanx, BB, I think…! ;-)
Good take!
Grandmother adopted mu sis and I..she was a Presbyterian, her brother was President of the Union theological Seminary in Richmond. The churches we went to always had the big dominating organ pipes that covered a large portion of the gothic achitecture. The Bach and other pieces combined with the power choir was so different than the Quaker meetings..some dominating like Onward Christian Soldiers after the fourth stanza…could lasttil the following Sunday.
What that speech helped do was make it alright to talk about race relations again. Up until then, most of us didn’t dare, except in the most oblique terms. “Oblique” probably isn’t the best description, but it was a subject most of us would have just as soon avoided, I think. One wrong word, and people would assume you were a racist or a fake. What Obama did was demonstrate that everyone has a point of view, and everyone has something to complain about, and that most of us need to take a step back and really try to see things from the other person’s point of view.
Retro active accountability?
Sounds great… unless you are with the IRS. /s
I grew up in the Presbyterian church, I know those long hymns too.
Next thing I want to learn to do is shaped note singing.

My good friend Ryan Hewitt is currently mixing a new album by the Avett Bros., produced by Rick Rubin. They are really nice guys, and very talented.
hey steve!
dood – of course you know them – i swear, you know everyone (laughing)
Love the Avett Bros.. Touring with Dave Matthews this year and there is no doubt who I would be most excited to see at that show.
Aha, ya finally delurked…! ;-)
Hey Suzanne are you playin hall monitor tanite?
curses foiled again
Feeling confidence in our new commander in chief is a good thing. If it plays well and he gets support he will continue to make good decesions. The mark of a good executive. He has the experience dealing with insurmountable problems in Chicago’s South Side projects. He may be a better choice than I thought as well. Eating humble pie. S)
Making like a nahanter pumpkin here.
G’ nite firedogs

Aloha, ES and Newt! *g*

Busted would be proud of them…him sleepin with the tools and all.
time for me to head out myself – lurk, i’ve checked and there are no rugby shirts anywhere at the lake.
g’nite all
Tweety = bumper sticker
He also touched on something most multiracial kids live with on a daily basis. I grew up with that same idea and general diplomacy because of it. We have to do the racial relations thing every day of our lives, since we’re not ‘one or the other’ by anyone’s standards. The mixes are too varied, and quite happily so. Obama’s extended family itself shows it to the best of that kind of potential.
Being critiqued for ‘not being black enough’ or ‘being too black’ is probably the dumbest thing in existence to me, but i run across it way too often with my particular blend of features. Walking that line is a crazy way to grow up, but that’s what Obama did and that’s what i’ve been doing in my 31 years on this planet. I have to say it can be fun, although most times i just roll my eyes at the stupidity and move on. Some can’t be helped and never will be. *shrugs*
Roger!
Bide your we man.
Thanks. You just taught me something interesting. Didn’t know there were two Union Theological Seminaries – one Pres in Richmond and one non-denom in NYC.
I was raised in the Congregational church (now often UCC) and frequently heard from the pulpit of Union Theological Seminary, the one in NYC.
I figured his family background was a big part of the reason he had that understanding. It also sheds some light on why he doesn’t see arbitrary lines the way other folks do. As I learn more about how much people have moved around and mixed together over the history of our species, such arbitrary divisions seem particularly strange now.
It’s time for me to pack it in. Goodnight whoever is left.
*sigh* Dial-up precludes chocolate and pralines offerings…! ;-)
Morning Waccamaw. Chilly?
No bribes necessary. I have licorice, the real thing. I am good for a while.
dial-up teaches humility *g*
Yup. When i’d realized he was mixed, i was able to understand how he arrived at a lot of his ideals for his speeches. I have many of the same opinions growing from a childhood that was not quite like his, but similar enough in the way that i had to figure out how to deal with people’s reactions to my mixed self. Along with the fact that i’ve never gotten into the black culture here, because i was adopted by a caucasian couple, one parent american the other canadian(with family ties to the UK). So in addition to multiracial, like Obama i’m also multinational.
Being looked at funny because i don’t speak in ebonics and never will, gets insulting sometimes. Those are the type of people i want to pick up by the scruff of the neck and drop down in the middle of London, england and meet a friend i met a few years back. East Ender accent and even darker skinned than me. *evil grin* Head asplody from total rearrangement of their expectations. I absolutely loved my own trips to London and that sheer mixture of people. I was just one of the crowd there, here? My mixed race self is a big deal on a different level. We have a lot of work to do, and Obama’s Presidency is just the beginning.
Touche… Sunny! ;-)
Attaturk is upstairs!
Yeah, he’s a Bush Appointee alright
Sunny -
If yer still about, see ya upstairs.
