On the whole I’d rather be home watching TV with the dogs, but the passing of the baton from George W. Bush to Barack Obama is the kind of momentus event that makes you want to brave the cold and celebrate with others.
Over the past few days I went to parties all over Washington DC — Media Matters, the DNC, Declare Yourself, FDL/Netroots Nation, the Illinois Home State Ball, the Huffington Post Ball and the Google Ball among others. Pretty high profile celebrations with enormous crowds, and I was struck by one thing — I rarely saw Democratic politicians. Aside from Barack and Michelle Obama at the Illinois Home State Ball, I really didn’t see any.
So if they weren’t out in public, where were they?
On the Money Trail: Lobbyists Are People Too, Reid Says
Obama Pledged to Ban Lobbyists, but Senate Leader Says They’re "Part of Washington"
In his historic speech Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama said the era of "protecting narrow interests" is over – an echo of his campaign promise that lobbyists and special interests would lose their clout in his White House. But lobbyists still have defenders in Washington D.C., including one of Obama’s most powerful allies, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada).
Reid invited top lobbyists to join him and his supporters for an inaugural brunch Monday where he told ABC News that he will still do plenty of business with them.
"And there’s nothing wrong with that," said Reid. "And Obama will be meeting with them too." When asked to clarify his remarks, given Obama’s promises to change that part of Capitol culture, Reid responded that lobbyists are part and parcel of the job.
"People should understand that lobbyists, per se, are someone’s father, mother, son, daughter," said Reid. "They work for a living." The Democratic leader’s sons and a son-in-law have worked as lobbyists.
[]
Lobbyists funded an array of events including a party to honor the state of Montana that took place in a nightclub decorated with artificial snow and snowboard machine rides. Why hold a party for Montana? The state is also home to Democratic Senator Max Baucus who is now the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, which writes the country’s tax laws.
"One little tweak in the code or additional comma or dropped word can have a huge impact on the tax liabilities of companies worth billions of dollars," said Steve Ellis of Taxpayers for Common Sense.
Lobbyists Funded Extravagant Inaugural Parties
Lobbyists along with their corporate and union clients put up the money for some of the most extravagant inaugural parties, including the former vice-President Al Gore’s Green Ball, the California Society’s luncheon fashion show, and the Congressional Black Caucus cocktail party.
And as the Presidential motorcade made its way down Pennsylvania Avenue Tuesday, top lobbyists, lawyers, and corporate executives in many of the offices above were watching as hors d’oevres were passed and champagne was flowing.
"The lobbyists know that they were here before President Obama got elected and they certainly plan on being here after he’s out of office," said Ellis.
Well, I guess that’s my answer.

Unfortunately, they were here first. But lobbyists still have to answer to what We The People want.
then what they know is false, there are legions more lobiests since bush then before, the vast majority of lobbiests were NOT there before bush got elected and with the force of our will they will NOT be there when obama is gone
let it be written and with the force of our will let it be so, so sayeth perris
I heard that quote from Reid, what struck me is the political tone deafness of the statement.
Thanks Jane.
digg is open
Geitner hearing is up on CSpan 2
full-blown narcissists like reid are people too, i guess.
reid and liarman – back stabbers both. Telling liarman to STFU is a waste of breath but it would be nice if Obama told harry where he can stuff his knife.
jane, you look marvelous. well done.
Jane, do you think along with the hors d’oevers, there was some smug chortling at our expense?
Did they listen and hear Lowery’s benediction yesterday? Or, did they laugh at that too?
Bidness as usual.
I’m looking for a second career. I can make up reasons why my client is right, and write them up so they sound really logical and stuff. Does that qualify me to be a lobbyist?
I just loved Lowery’s benediction:
The Balls are the functional equivalent of the piano player in the parlor. A bit of a distraction and noise to cover for the real business going on in the backrooms.
Great photo, btw.
OfT, this morning, Howard Dean was in an early segment of CNBC’s Squawk Box. IIRC, Carl Quintanilla kept asking the same question about GOP fiscal discipline in different ways. Dean just kept crushing it with pithy, dismissive replies, that the GOP were the worst spenders/borrowers in history.
I think that just about describes it.
I like lobbyists. Aren’t they the guys in the fancy uniforms that get taxis for you and open the doors? ‘Course having to constantly tip them is tiresome.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“The lobbyists know that they were here before President Obama got elected and they certainly plan on being here after he is out of office”
We are all a “special interest and it’s not “lobbyists” per se but the power of money over votes that we must change…what I mean is, that when there is complete public funding of general elections we will be able to get as close as we can to “one person one vote” and the lobbyists will hafta pressure elected officials by the number of voters they represent and not the amount of money they can contribute.
So patience grasshopper, you are one of the leaders of the immutable movement that will eventually eliminate the voice of money in our political discourse.
Now tell us about your evening…didja dance that hunk you had on yer arm yesterday afternoon into next week??!! Ya know ya broke a lotta hearts out here yesterday, don’tcha?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE STRUGGLE GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Yeah. Not very surprising.
What will be surprising is if Pres. O doesn’t get punked by the Reps in the first 100 days of post-partisanship. If anyone can do it he can.
The only thing that encourages me is he has a mandate and he has a veto pen.
The Dems have both houses of congress if they can keep it.
I loved it too. Listened to the youtube again this am. Quite a challenge to us.
May I do a slight FDL edit?
pledging that we won’t get
wearycranky in the difficult days ahead. Then maybe it’s necessary for the netroots to make life miserable for the lobbyists themselves and not only the politicians that are in their pocket. Don’t go after the drug dealer, go after the distributor.
Lobbyists who are working for non profit corporations are fine.
For profit corporate lobbyists are evil incarnate and MUST be banned from the halls of congress.
O… and Jane, you look great as a poodle!
Yes, quite the vision of loveliness.
Agree.
Increase the cost of their doing business.
you got it,ill say it again
plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose”
Lobbyists that represent foreign governments like AIPAC should be banned too.
I’m shocked, shocked to think influence gets peddled in Washington. All those rich people throwing parties because they want to further the public welfare. What is more American?
In a culture where one gets along by going along, it is unreasonable to believe individuals can hold back this tide or that they even want to.
Beware the Cocktail Weinie!

Watching the hearing on cspan2.
A little less talk and a lot more action, please. I get weary of hearing the same thing over and over. Yes, we know that our country should have more exports than imports. Thank you Chuck for this epiphany.
This was meant as a comment from frustration. I’m not cranky yet today.
That’s because his sons, and ex-long time staffer like Kai Anderson are lobbyists. http://www.westernlands.org/Harveycorridor.pdf This should be a cached LA Times article, couldn’t find the direct link for some reason this morning.
roger that.
Let those who want to “disseminate” information PUBLISH it for anyone, including critters to avail themselves of. Let’s de couple the face to face BS, dinners, golf trips, use of corp jets and forbid critters from taking a red cent from any lobbyists.
I’m shocked, shocked to think influence gets peddled in Washington. All those rich people throwing parties because they want to uphold the public welfare. Why else would they do it? What is more American than that?

Patience, the lobyists are trying to get one of their own confirmed as Treasury Sec.
g’morning sadly. I watched that one this morning, again, too. Transcendent. The smiling musicians…they looked like they were in heaven. And that flock of doves. wow.

Can anybody tell Tweety and his cronies to please STFU and stop overtalking their self-important selves right now during the National Prayer Service?
Is that too much to ask?
But, but, but.
PS, I kinda miss your countdown clock. Is there something else you can count down?
CSpan has it on, without the yap yap.
what is most irksome to me is that the members of the public are not invited and that members of congress don’t, save for a few notable exceptions, visit some of the same parties that jane attended. would that be such a big step outside the bubble?
C-Span 1 was covering it too
listening to schumer is a recipe for crankiness. my bad for not including a warning on the hearing list. *g*
geithner is beginning his opening statement now.
Sorry for the double posting. I got a database error message and thought nothing went through.
suggestion: a count up for the obama administration? sort of a metaphor for the change in direction?
Owe you a drink for # 39
I have been racking my brain for something – but right now my brain is hurting from last nights party
Ha. And, I should know better about Schumer.
Did you hear KO last night. He’s keeping his count up of days since Mission Accomplished. He said, Did you think that would end? We’re still there. Good for him.
good for KO. i don’t have cable, so can’t watch.
Prolly shouldn’t accept a drink this early and especially while watching this prayer service. *g*
Thank you.
Whitaker and Tweety now overtalking Geithner.
I am so frackin’ sick of this self-indulgent media overtalking. Enough.
Hmmmmm. Prayer service on Cspan 1, hearing on Cspan 2.
Thank you Brian Lamb.
THese guys think that they are more important than the news and that we are to stupid to understand what is happening without their translation for us.
One also wonders how much the ante gets upped when liquor and high-rolling aren’t part of the mix. What do Mormon lobbyists offer to lure and persuade?
http://www.religionnewsblog.co…..mainstream
In the case of Harry Reid and his associates and family empire , it is deals associated with doing things to, and with, BLM (Department of Interior) public lands. Public land gets privatized, utility corridors moved to benefit developers, water corridors get legislated to promote de-watering of the Great Basin. Now the Reid empire is really getting into INdustrial Renewable energy chopping up Nevada.
Anyone else getting tired of all the PRAYER rituals?
Only CNBC gets the fact that the Geithner hearing is more relevant. The rest of the cable news channels have live coverage of a witch doctor-poetess chanting some koo-koo babble about fasting and wolf feeding. Ech.
It it because of the Prayer service that it seems that I only see Republicans at the Geithner hearing? Oh jello Jay is here…..
Wow. Grassley reading script after script. “If yes,….”
I’m surprised he doesn’t read the parenthetical look up and look inquisitive notations.
Personally, I don’t think quoting Gandi, MLK Jr. and focusing on loving our neighbor is koo koo babble. But, we should each have the right and freedom to seek out the words that lift us up.
Classic Harry Reid, putting his foot in his mouth again. Yes Harry, we already knew by your previous words and actions that you love lobbyists and loathe the citizens. We should keep this article. It shall be added to the mounting pile of evidence against you.
Baucas is running the meeting. Bingamin asking ? now. Rethugs are circling for propaganda points. Many dems have asked questions privately and are ready to vote.
LOLOL!
OMG Hatch…… Corporate income tax the highest in the world….. WTF…. 87% DO NOT PAY taxes ……
I was not cranky until I read these “pathetic” comments by Reid. The majority leader of the US Senate supports the institutionalized bribery between campaign committees and corporations. He also supports nepotism in the senate leadership, especially his own family’s influence peddling.
Thanks Jane for the Post, but Lobbyists of the corporate type are not people too. We have seen R’s and D’s lobbyists working together to sell Chimpy’s wars.
The invocation of a Sky God. Acceptable for the Powerful, yet the object of derision when proffered by common fools. An idiot told me yesterday that he had quit smoking because “God told him to [do so]”.
I worry when people think that God tells them to do things. You never know what these things could be. God told Bush to strike Saddam, after all. There are many examples. Charles Manson, Hitler and Usama were thus inspired.
If God tells us too many things – especially if we hear actual voices – we may find ourselves in a mental facility.
Yet, our leaders are invoking a (our) Sky Being all the time lately.
Now that Bush is gone (goddamn, it feels good to say that), perhaps we can get more light shone on lobbying. Bush and Cheney were, to a large degree, just the face of a huge machine which was often directed by K-street lobbyists. Bush is gone, but that machine is still there, and running.
U.S. taxes on corporate income in OECD* Countries in 2002 as a percentage of Gross Domestic product: 1.8%
Lowest: Germany at 1.0%
Highest: Luxembourg at 8.6%
[source: Corporate Income Tax Rates: International Comparisons (Congressional Budget Office)]
Sorry, just not buying that corporate taxes are high when they are so little of GDP and MOST countries actually charge more as a percentage of GDP.

Hey, hey, hey, now.
Lobbyists are people, too. But then again, serial killers and terrorists are people too. They have moms and dads and spouses and kids and people who love and depend on them.
But (and it’s an important but, Harry) we’ve decided that serial killers and terrorists should not be allowed to ply their trades. They are a disease on the social structure and must be removed from society.
Lobbyists are a disease on our polity. They poison the process, they present quasilegal bribes. They make it possible for us to say poisonous things like:
“We have the best government money can buy,” and,
“The problem with politicians is that you can only rent them, they don’t stay bought.”
Now, Harry, what effect do these sorts of ideas (and outside the beltway lots of people hold these opinions true) have on our polity?
Yes, Harry, that’s a rhetorical question. You’d better know the answer as well as I do. It’s not a good effect. Why do you think our voter participation rate is so low? Yes, these sorts of feelings about our government are part of it.
The late political philosopher George Carlin said not long before he died that nonparticipation in the process was the answer. This is one of the rare occasions where I think Carlin got it wrong. It’s time to eject the moneychangers from the halls of power.
too bad harry didn’t jump on the helicopter yesterday, too.
I’m sure that Hatch was talking about tax rates, but ignoring all the loopholes built into the tax code.
We REALLY need to replace Reid, he is part of the old guard that doesn’t yet realize the torch has been passed to the next generation.
Well said, BC.
One only wishes that Reid had to read such words, every single day, until either they sink in or he retires with bleary eyes to his Stevens-like empire of arrogant privilege.
Yep, narcissitic sociopaths, of all stripes, are people too, they are fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, aunts, uncles, and family friends.
And, Harry, all families have got ‘em, some just a little more than others, doncha know?
Jane, you are smokin’!!!! Wow, you look great!
The corporate tax “rate” may be the highest in the world…and I seriously doubt that, when one compares it to European Democracies…but all data shows that 95% of the top corporations pay no taxes due to massive tax breaks and write-offs.
In addition those stats that suggest that corporations are paying lots of Federal taxes almost always include Social Security taxes into the mix…which are essentially the share of income that the corporations withhold for workers SSI. And those same Republicans that tally this stuff fail to include SSI as a tax on the workers. Since these are “matching” one would expect that those numbers would balance. But they count the Business SSI but not the worker match?
Finally, I’ve always paid income taxes from the time I made over $8000. When Republicans claim these things they are going right up against the cold hard reality that everyone knows they pay, and have paid taxes. It’s such a transparent lie. And except for those debates in the Senate amongst a bunch of people so isolated from the reality of work-a-day America, it smells of lies.
If US Corporate taxes were actually so high, you wouldn’t have every country from China, India, Singapore, Japan, to Germany, Italy and Finland willing to invest here and buy up shares of US corporations. They’d either tuck that money internally, or invest in some third world country. The low Federal Corporate taxes made buying up those “tainted” US assets a “lucrative looking” deal.
If lobbysist are just – golly-gosh, shucks, plain-people, then maybe they should have ONLY the same access that others have to their Representatives. Corporations (and their directors and senior employees collectively) should have donation caps as an INDIVIDUAL ($4200 per candidate). They should have to arrange visits by mail in the Congressional office (no backroom meetings or meals togerher at a Washington posh restaurant).
And all their conversations should be recorded and placed on a website.
Violations of such a policy would require that any contribution to said candidate be returned for that campaign cycle, and no contribution could be made within a year of that election subsequently.
This way lobbyists could “lobby” but the American people would know precisely what was being done on their dime, in their offices, with their elected and appointed Representatives.
Where was Joseph Lieberman?
An excellent plan, cinnamonape.
If this were a democracy, “gosh-golly-shucks plain-peole” could vote on it.
But what have we got?
Nancy and Harry get to decide.
And, get to lecture us on our ‘proper role’ or ‘place’ in the greater ’scheme’ of things.
The question is:What are the “g-g-s plain people” gonna ‘do’ about it?
Defer to their ‘betters’?
Jane,
You look smoking in your gown.
If you ever need an escort, I VOLUNTEER!!!
You’d think Harry Reid would know enough to keep his mouth shut. He just doesn’t get it. I am so over him and his capitulating. Really can’t we replace him as majority leader? His ties with lobbyists and his support of some of the worst of the Bush admin. policies are just too much. We need new leadership.
Harry Reid knows the constituents no longer believe a word he says, nor intend to support him for re-election.
So what Harry Reid obviously did lots of in private (whored himself out to the moneyed elite), he now does openly in public. Probably to thumb his nose at constituents; and derail Obama’s stated desire to rid the beltway of the infestation of corrupt sleazeballs.
But that’s okay. We all already knew who really greases his wallet and gets his support. And it isn’t we the people.
By the way, it figures Harry Reid’s sons would be part of the culture of beltway sleazeballs.
I’ve made up my mind. Whoever runs against Harry Reid will get my money and support.
