I’m looking at the crowd on TV already swelling at the National Mall in 18 degree weather and thinking many have got to be hurting from lack of sleep and too much fun the night before. Last night the biggest challenge was not getting into the parties but getting to them as police blocked off one road after another in anticipation of today’s festivities. It wasn’t until the wee hours that the revelers returned to Kamp Kobe, and most were up at 5:30 this morning in anticipation of transportation challenges and long lines at the security checkpoints.
Yesterday afternoon CommonSense Media sponsored a party that The Daily Voice threw honoring African American leaders like Joseph Lowery, Corey Booker and Dean Alfreda Robinson. DeVeria, Pach and I finally got to close the virtual divide and meet Malcom Harris and Keith Boykin, the founders of the site, in person. Many in the crowd had gone to school with Obama or worked on the campaign, and it was a very moving affair. The Daily Voice is officially one year old now and I really recommend checking them out, it’s sort of a black Huffington Post that plays host to commentators from across the political spectrum.
We then went over to the Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington Netroots Nation "blogger ball" that FDL co-sponsored. It was kind of scary to see how well we can all clean up. Mary and Raven of NN did a great job with the party and the place was packed. Gregg Levine, Marcy Wheeler, Spencer Ackerman, Lisa Derrick, Pach and DeVeria all made a showing on behalf of FDL. It was interesting to see what politicians showed up to work the room — Howard Dean, Alan Grayson, Brian Moran. We had to leave around 9:30 when reports came in that the MoveOn party had a line around the block and that the HuffPo party had 3000 RSVPs for 1500 spots.
We were almost home by the time we realized we’d forgotten John Amato. I felt like a mom who left her kid in the Safeway.
Anyway, that crisis was quickly resolved and while some went to MoveOn, we went to HuffPo. They’d closed off the streets for blocks around so I put on my Ugg boots under my cocktail dress, carried my high heels and schlepped. There was a mob around the front entrance but we followed Andrew Rasiej who looked like he knew what he was doing and were soon inside.
Once we were safely in the doors I stepped back into my shoes and we had a great time. Arianna wanted everyone there by midnight so we could all celebrate the end of the Bush era together. Sting, Wil.i.am and Sheryl Crow performed but it was hard to tell if the acoustics just sucked or if they were all…limited. But the party was fun — Jose Antonio Vargas, Chris Hayes, Karl Frisch, Ken Mehlman, Murshed Zaheed, Joe Sudbay, James Boyce, Eddie Vale, Christy Heffner, Marshall Ganz, Brian Komar, Rick Jacobs, Tony Podesta, Craig Newmark, Joel Silberman, Jacki Schechner, Sam Stein, Tom Edsall, Kombiz Lavasany (pictured w/me above) were in attendance.
About halfway through the evening I said "screw this" and put my Uggs back on and walked around the party in a cocktail dress and black fur boots. I soon saw someone else carrying their heels and wearing their Uggs under a ball gown.
I think it’s a fashion trend.

Good Morning Jane….. Happy Inauguration Day
What Katy said. And, woo hoo.
Your fashion choice sounds like the winter DC version of Angelenos wearing cowgirl boots with shorts. But, you know that. :)
Citizen Hamsher:
How great is it that a dangerous, feminist subversive like you can go to inauguration festivities and find many others of like mind and habits of thought and action celebrating political victory!!! You deserve it Sister Jane and I wonder if DC is ready for Hurricane Hamsher turnin out inauguiral “balls” tonight…ROCK ON SISTER!!
‘Mornin’, Jane!
w00t!
thanks Jane, for partying so we don’t have to *s*
Keep the faith and pass the ammunition, Norske.
;)
Were cocktail weenies served?
And no, I’m not talking about Bill Kristolnacht and his hooker.
Fashion violation. 15 yard penalty and automatic first down.
Thanks for partying for us, Jane! We’re with you in spirit.
We finally made it .
I can hardly believe it.
Good morning Jane !!
I am amazed by the enthusiasm of the crowds in Washington,I bet there’s never been this much excitement for an inauguration before !!
Jane is trendy in DC today! Good for you girl. Don’t let anyone tell ya what is right and wrong in the fashion world. You be your own guide. LOL
Cool, I see Howard Dean arriving on stage on the CNN stream. He’s a big reason this is happening today.
Of course, the CNN bobbleheads make no mention on Dean. Move along, nothing to see here…
Just saw Howard Dean….. going into the VIP seating….
Oh good Toobin is taking about the supreme court justices and the possible changes to the court….. there is Sandra Day O’Conner….. grit teeth….. this is a happy day…
Stuff you don’t get on CNN! GOOD morning, Jane!
Jane, have you witnessed any right wing leftovers in DC who are overcome with grief and sadness that George Bush is leaving them?
Whew Jane – lookin great – Uggs are great and sneakers in the summertime!
1 hr & 34 min
Jumping from tall buildings perhaps !!

Jane ! Christy ! Pach ! RBG ! FDLers !
Citizen Bustednuckles:
What an incredible feelin’…but as some of us who shared some of our country’s worst moments pause, we must not forget those who didn’t make it home to live for this moment. Let’s lift a glass to those “absent commrads” Brother ‘nucles…and let’s not forget that the struggle goes on and on and…
Or standing in the line for unemployment benefits

Awright, John Cusack on stage. He wrote a great HuffPo thing recently about prosecuting ShrubCo. Hopefully he’ll get a chance to talk to Big O.
Once more, for posterity … Cheney’s a Dick !
well they CLOSED all the bridges from Virginia, and we could not get to DC,im really pissed gonna turn in the rental cat
Got to go watch tee vee wireless no work in room with tee vee !
Watching the (two) cast(s) of characters brings home what a radical idea voting and democracy really is. Look through millenia of history. This just does. Not. Happen.
They’re venting on their Twitter feeds, which will soon take OVER TEH WORLD!!!
I’m trying to clear the blear from my head this morning but my question is this: Does anyone remember any inaugural that had this much participation inside DC or which elicited this much excitement and parties OUTSIDE of DC? There are people holding their own inauguration parties all over the country – there are celebrations being held around the world. I can’t recall any election that caused this to happen.
Operation Amato Rescue was indeed a success.
We don’t leave our people behind.
Jane, you look fabulous! And is he your date? Lucky man.
Hope you keep having fun today.
Amen Norske … there’ve been few moments to justify the greatest sacrifice made by so many heroes. This is one of those moments.
I’d like to make an observation, sitting up on my frozen perch … this moment will remove a lot of doubt that African Americans have, that the American public regards slavery as a great shame. This does a lot to build new bridges and unite most in today’s America, who see character, not color.
America, your greatest days are ahead !
The world is also celebrating getting over an eight year sick.
1 hr & 25 min
LOL … were you trolling ?
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Firepup Freedom fighters:

This morning I felt ill thinking if it was McCain/Palin being sworn in today.
We would never have had a prayer of climbing out from under the shitpile.
Hi Pach…. glad to see you …. now if RGB would show up to say hey….
(doing fine btw)
LOL!!!!!
It’s really nice to stop worshiping ‘the porcelain goddess’ isn’t it?
{{{{{ katymine }}}}}
So good to know you’re here with us at this time.
About 30 people would have showed up for it too. ;-)

Raven !
Come on Bro … join with us at this moment in History Q
shhhhhhhhhh that is what nightmares are made of……. {{{shutter}}}
No, but last night Tim Tagaris gave us a report. Funny stuff.
Who, Ralph ? Ralph is the Pagan God most loved by wayward Teens … he was so embraceable !
One thing that we should not loose sight of while we celebrate is the horror that is being uncovered in Gaza. I am sure it was a big part of the Israeli plan. We need for justice to prevail here and in Gaza.
1 hr & 19 min
I’m waiting for Bennett, Limbaugh and Buchanan’s heads to explode …
A ‘visitor’ on the last thread has promised us a “Civil War” if Bu$hCO is held to account.
We shall see.
1 hr & 25 min
gawd, that looks good.
What fun. We really need to know more about the heels though.
If that were the case,I wouldn’t have gotten out of bed this morning !
oh believe me, i am thinking hard and praying for all our fellow citizens who did not live through the Bu$h misAdministration. And there are many! Counting his pet wars and not!
If we are here to celebrate, we “escaped”, we are the lucky ones.
Bu$h 43 was a murderous reign.
Close so close !!
There will be a Civil War … inside the Repub party.
Let us remember those firepups who are with us in spirit. Feel free to add any I have overlooked.
(((Steve Gilliard))), (((Quakergirl)))) (((Barbara’s David)))
A perfect ‘venue’, Petro.
So are any of Obama’s Kenyan relatives attending the inauguration? What about the people he worked with in community organization?
why bring the dirt up here? Most of us aren’t interested in that crap
I believe his grandmother is here.
Cheney finally got to live out his dream — he’s reprising Dr. Strangelove in public. Hah! He’s dropped his cover!
Did you miss me earlier?
lolo and Steve AR…
What happened to QuakerGirl??
My apologies, Elliot.
thank you, this is a day of celebration
You mean his Kenyan grandmother? Toot is there in spirit, I’m sure.
Much as I hate the phrase, appropriate it is:
“BRING IT ON!”
;~D
His Grandma came from Kenya bearing gifts

MOLLY IVENS!!!!!!!!
CNN: blah blah blah “Can’t imagine what it’s like for President Bush as he moves away from the White House after EIGHT YEARS there.” blah blah blah “We’ll have to see what happens in 2012.” blah blah blah
I must of….SO good to hear from you {{{{{RGB}}}}}}}}
And why is Andy Card allowed to give his observations? Who cares what he makes up?
I’m sure she is, what an incredible job they did raising Barack.
Where?! Where!?
Rick Warren must be finishing his last Danish right about now. Ya missed a spot, Ricky!
Eight years ago the coup had already happened
1 hr & 8 min
Duh….. I read it and it didn’t register…… chemo brain…..
While I have time, I want to thank you for the clock. It has been great to have it. What will you do for an encore? :)
WELL, i can’t help it. i was really good and happy and partyin’ yesterday and now i am in tears again just like election night.
mixed feelings, tears of joy, tears of sorrow for the last 8 years and what was done to my country, my country men and women and children, and the Iraqi people!!! in my name.

What a fantastic day! The sun is shining (well it is here), the birds are singing…
On a real girlie note: Michelle Obama’s outfit is simply gorgeous.
Gee, were the crowds that enthusiatic for W’s first inauguration? Hope he notes the difference.
passing you a handkerchief of hope.
I’m getting really excited!
our long national nightmare is all but over!
I wish I could start a countdown clock to the beginning of the prosecutions.
1 hr & 4 min
LOL really! It’s like a rock concert
The Delusional One is prolly telling BO … Do your job so well that after 8 years, the people will show you the same Love they’re showing me today !
I must delurk. This is the most exciting moment in my life, next to the birth of my children. Congratulations to everyone!
Question:
Why are Bush and Cheney there today?
Damn the senate is going to confirm Gov Janet as Sec Homeland Security…… everyone listen for the big flush sounds coming from Arizona
Just the line I was thinking of typing.
Hiya Pups!
Wobbs, she looks fabulous! What a beautiful day.
I know! Chocking back tears here in Maine!
Very funny; probably true, too.
Amen.
C-SPAN has the best coverage as usual. What a moment!
We need to remember the nightmare.
Never another Bush.
That is the hope of all of us, Elliot.
May our better dreams now be realised, or at least begun upon!
A toast to America’s (and the world’s) better future!!!
To Obama, and to all whose hearts care, about life, about love, and about liberty and justice for all!!!
I should have include all our fallen Brothers and Sisters, for the last eight years have been long and hard.
Lets see…..if I’m ready
New box of tissues …. check
Fresh cup of coffee …. check
((((HUGGING KATYMINE)))) So glad you’re here and healthy, Ms. Katy, and aren’t missing this amazing moment in our nation’s history!!!!
((((Marie Roget !!!!)))
New box of tissues …. check
You gonna share those?
dammit.
There is a man saluting in the crowd — ok, I’m crying already.
same here. I have 3 packets of tempo tissues — I hope it’s enough.
Hmmm. Never again. Where have I heard that before! Oh, yeah! Isn’t that what Israel said.
I guess the thing you need to remember is not to become the thing you dread most!
Less than an hour left to the Bush Presidency. Almost there.
How do you guys think the crowd will react to Warren? Crickets?
‘Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’, though his feets is swollen…’
;>)
I have to de-lurk too…I am so excited. What a day
As Lynne Cheney, Laura Bush, DICK Cheney and the soon to be former president walked out of the White House I found myself screaming at tv “Buh-Bye! See you at the Haige!!”
got the whole costco 8 pack sitting on the coffee table….. help yourself…
OMG it really is going to happen….. I lived to see this….. HOT damn…
Isn’t Obama’s Kenyan Grandmother there?
Ditto!!!
They’ll probably react to the job he’s about to do, rather than the man himself.
It’s begun !!!!
Christine !
I guarantee all of us will be in Tears before this is over.
And all the Iraqis and Afghanis whose deaths are on our shoulders.
Delurking on this sunny day.
I’m about to have a shower, to wash away the accumulated stench of the last eight years. Time to start fresh.
Liveblog upstairs…
((((Jane Hamsher,)))) looking fabulous gal!
I see from the HuffPo pics you were at the same event as Gerard Butler – ceeerikey – now that would have been worth campaigning for :D
Geez, some really large woodpecker is working on my shutters, maybe even a pileated. I’m sorry but he can lookf for food elsewhere.
My husband is going to sneak home later for a celebratory nooner. :)
I took the day off because crying at work is undignified for a woman of my age…
The MSM just can’t help itself. After the factoid was used that William Henry Harrison was the shortest serving President, Katie Couric said: Sadly, I am distantly related to him. And I thought that Harrison if he were around might say much the same of Couric.
ROFL … you’re a genius, man !
Are y’all gonna watch TeeVee after ? *g*
yep.
((((Marie Roget !!!!)))
a whole lotta that goin round today . . . get some girl !!!
Are you sure it’s not Libby looking for Asylum ?
I am remembering the inauguration cavalcade/crowd scene 2001 in “Fahrenheit 911″. Bush would have loved to have gotten the crowd reception Obama is getting today instead of stuff thrown at his vehicle. Or maybe he has rewritten that story too.
(((((DarkBlack)))))
