President Obama and his family are in their American-manufactured limo proceeding slowly along the parade route.
It’s a cool license plate: USA1
They’re near Fourth Street. If memory serves, this is very close to the federal courthouse where Fitzgerald prosecuted Libby not so long ago.
Cabinet: 7 confirmations from the Senate, not including Clinton.
Stupendous crowds causing delays even for people with tickets. Marcy reported on the crowds this morning and we will have more from Spencer and Gregg.
Somber reporting because of the scare with Senators Kennedy and Byrd being taken away, ill, from the Senate lunch.
Updates for both Senators affirm they are in better condition than originally feared.
Parade order in this Elliott diary – much appreciated.
Sample of participants:
* Representatives from the US Army, United States Military Academy & US Army Reserve
* Punahou School JROTC
* Punahou School Marching Band
* Whitney M. Young Magnet High School Navy JROTC
* Isiserettes Drill and Drum Corps
* Jesse White Tumbling Team
* Florida A&M University Marching 100 Band
* Crow Nation of Montana
* Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School Marching Band
* Illinois Home State Float
* Brooklyn Music and Arts Program
* Theodore Roosevelt High School Marine Corps JROTC Color Guard and Drill Team
* Colts Drum and Bugle Corps
* Klein Collins High School Air Force JROTC
* Cleveland Firefighters Memorial Pipes and Drums
The schedule is something like an hour late, with participants along the parade route wondering why there is a delay.
Heavy cheers from the crowds as the President’s car goes slowly forward.
Very visible and heavy security.
Will be riding until 15th Street, then walking. There is a different level of security check for people who are permitted in that area. Had some experience there.
Obama is getting out of the car by the Navy Memorial. Michelle and Barack walking now – way ahead of schedule – up Pennsylvania Avenue.
Walking by the National Archives. Our beloved Constitution. The Bill of Rights.
Crowds screaming with joy as the Obamas walk by.

The President and Mrs. Obama have gotten back into the car.
Must have been really cold – or perhaps the Secret Service reminded them this was not the plan.
The Obamas are walking again, will apparently walk the rest of the way as per the original plan. Stands are full to capacity.
Approaching the reviewing stand.
Speculation about whether they must be feeling cold. This is laughable. These are Chicago people who went to Boston to get warm.
Aaaand back into the car, to the White House.
Plenty of other groups still to come through as part of the parade. Traditionally a group from every state plus the service bands.
Obama’s high school band coming by the reviewing stand. Local guy does well.
Not much air time for the photogenic Bidens. Striking red coat – imagine she is warm.
What you miss if you just watch the President go by is the over the top excitement of the bands and groups that participate in the parade.
They are jazzed. Freezing, but happy.
Obamas and Bidens can now watch the parade from a warm place.
Bidens crossing the North Lawn towad the reviewing stand. Obamas soon.
Obama family heading toward the reviewing stand – so sweet to see parents and children holding hands. Love the children’s bright coats. Barack with the younger daughter.
Announcing the President and First Lady.
Entering the reviewing stand.
Hail to the Chief being played.
Delaware is well represented in the parade, as Biden’s home state.

President Barack Hussein Obama.
That is all.
Long national nightmare comes to an end! Citizens delirous with joy…
I’ll let downstairs know :) Oh Happy Day! :) (except prayers for Sen Bryd and Sen Kennedy)
Who are the 7 that were confirmed?
On the CQ website I see that our Gov has been confirmed……… hear that big flushing sound?…… there goes Arizona…….
How cute…Sasha is saluting! Those kids are adorable.
So, does anyone who happened to live and work in DC during the day, recall having a message delivered by Rachel Maddow the bicycle messenger?
I bet that’s not a real license plate!
Pull ‘em over!
Tase ‘em!
He’s not really president if he’s not in a limo that’s officially registered to the Disctrict of Colu- OOOF! OW! Get – MMPH -
Sorry folks; Michelle Malkin took over my keyboard for a minute there. Everything’s cool.
Rick
I realized this morning that for the first time, since November 22, 1963, I feel hope and not despair on a strange level…I cried all morning. I never cry.
I have felt that way since sometime in the campaign…that the end of the dream is having another chance with vision and youth and hope. A sort of restoration…the ongoing promise of a dream. Thank God
Elections only count if they elect Republicans. *g*
I’m 50/50……. I know that Janet Napolitano will be a great Sec of Homeland Security but the SOS who will be sworn in asap is female GWB and the controller is the chair of the state Repug party, he already has a list of 25 things he wants to undo from Janet’s administration…..
Obama out and walking
He’s gonna walk!!!!!
Re parade and delay – I’m amazed that so many people are willing to hang out through pretty much the whole day to see the parade.
I was a bit fuzzy on the order of events after swearing in and speech–assumed they went straight to parade, never noticed a luncheon, while visitors wait outside in the freezing air.
Of course, I haven’t paid much attention to the last couple of inaugs – for some reason.
Oh dear, Pres. Obama is getting out of car and approaching crowd – that makes me nervous. Should he do that?
Wow. Secret Service or not, he’s gutsy.
Don’t forget the Blue Eagles from South Cobb High School in Austell, Georgia. The ONLY band from Georgia. Rock on!
Illinois Sec of State is still running his tumbling team?
Oh, too wonderful! They let him out of the limo! Hi, President Obama!
I always wondered how that person that pelted bush’s limo with eggs got away
On one of the channels they said that there was over 3000 people trying to get processed through a security gate to go to an event that is part of the parade…. some of them paid for their seats…
I’ll bet Michelle wishes she had borrowed Jane’s Uggs. So Cold
No I want him to get back into the car.
What a beautiful moment – to see them stroll together hand in hand … wow
FWIW…
As a long time volunteer for the Epilepsy Foundation, seizures are not necessarily a “very” serious event. Probably Sen Kennedy was taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. It is very embarrassing but not life threatening unless the seizure itself lasts more than five minutes and or you are in a dangerous area when the seizure begins such as on a flight of stairs or in front of a stove.
It is very likely that the excitement of the whole day is what brought on the seizure. I hope he feels well enough to enjoy the rest of the day. It is very exhausting having a seizure.
I liked her thumbs up after the speech, too!
I’m all excited again!
He’s the first since Carter to walk the route. God holds him in his hand today, RevBev!
I’m at a coffee shop no tv Obama is walking? I’m not that old when was the last time a President walked? Especially an African American? The GOP is going to freak if nothing happens to him.
I don’t think they have seen a Popular President before!
So do the Obamas…ahh…you know, christen the White House right away on the first night? (ahem). I’d think they’d both be pretty jazzed and ready to roll after today.
Damn. He’s made me cry again!
I’m watching a live stream from C-SPAN. Mercifully, no voice-over commentary from the chattering class. And it occurs to me that I now know what hope sounds like.
quite the contrast to that first inaugeration from bush, he was hated for how he gained office and man we were right about the man
The whole crowd saw nothing? Nobody tried to stop him
Um, I’m guessing that would be a grand way to exorcise the prior administration…
Probably my age–feeling very nervous – but not half so nervous as those Secret Service guys walking around him, I’m sure.
obama walking – truly wonderful.
we now have a President OF the people……. damn where is that tissue box…..
boy am I happy to have Michelle as first lady … big wide wave, real smile … wow
I love the big smiles.
Those two look like normal, regular folks. How refreshing to see.
Of course, I have considered that in my sultry mind…ahem…hmmm…what do you do??? You don’t know if there are mikes or cameras, etc….soonor or later you just say, get the popcorn spies, we’re having fun and you’re not! I don’t seen any other way out of that predicament….hahahahahha
Aw, back in the car. It was fun to watch them walk and wave, and hear the cheering – but I feel relief, too.
They’re back in the car… Did the Secret Service finally stop hyperventilating?
Do you need an exorcist?
Made me nervous too…different when it was Carter or Clinton…We cannot afford a tragedy.
If “The House” is a rockin, don’t bother knockin!
That, and burning a little sage would do the trick.
also, something i really really liked about that walk was that while there was lots of security (no problem there) – there wasn’t the paramilitary riot gear i’ve learned to expect to see whenever there is a large assembly of citizens. awesome!
Al Roker speculating they’ll get out of the car again after they warm up. It’s freaking COLD in DC today!
They are the two bravest people in the world. Wow. I’m sick of crying…dammit….
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
best moment … just wonderful
smart too from a security pov – to break up the walking and only do it for a bit.
AHA! You see, the key word that you used is “citizens.” President Obama isn’t afraid of them. Shrub seemed to be, hence the riot gear…
Yeah, I’d get that sage stick out and into every corner in the WH…pronto.
Whew, now that we are breathing again, this is a nice little bit:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes…..-obama/?hp
Obama the Town Celebrates | 1:08 p.m. Lest you think that America was celebrating by itself today, we hear via Reuters that in Japan, the sleepy fishing town of Obama was partying too. “Temple bells tolled, fireworks were set off and residents danced the hula in the cold Japanese city of Obama on Tuesday to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama,” Reuters reports.
Shrub is Gonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnne.!!!
Yeeeeehaaaawwww…
The PA announcers are certainly fired up. Lovin’ me some C-Span. No idiot bobbleheads.
lots of tears here too LS … what a day
Kennedy awake and answering questions. I feel that he’ll be fine.
Yeah. that’s cool. so disappointed when all that was trotted out during the conventions. this is very nice and very appropriate. access and protection. a OK here.
Did Jimmy Carter originate the presidential “long walk” down Penn. Ave.? I don’t remember earlier presidents doing it.
Charlie Gibson reported earlier today that the Obama girls were going to have a few friends from their new school, have a scavenger hunt and watch a couple of Disney movies while their parents are out trying to attend all the various balls tonight…
Ahhh. It is all so incredible!
So what does Faux Noise have up? Reports of riots. Am I surprised? Not so much….
We’re not seeing the ever present flag waving the Rethugs love so much. Just folks.
so awesome
That’s what I recall. It made quite a stir at the time, as no one seemed to have anticipated it, and it appeared to be something that he just wanted to do, very spur of the moment.
Isn’t it nice to see regular police persons instead of SWAT ……
BTW did everyone know that we are still at threat level ORANGE for about the 7th year!
Well, as long as none of the pizza ends up in the bed in the Lincoln bedroom, I’m sure it’s going to be ok…
Isn’t it great? I can’t stomach Wolf or Tweety
Yup. We’ve been cryin’ for 3 days…feels good…eyes are kinda swollen, but there has been a release of something so old…so old…the feeling of OMG what happened to this beautiful world….Now, it is back, and I’m so hopeful…not unrealistic mind you, but for the first time since my childhood, there is something there that has been hidden and gone and guarded and feared. I never thought it would come back…but…here it is…Not BO per se…but the end of something that has had a liplock on us for a long, long, time…It is the going of the bad…rather than the coming of the good. Something broke open in this country.
Really amazing how good those Liberal conspirators are. I mean, they thought all the way back to 1961 to make that fake birth announcement for the Hawaiian newspaper so that we wouldn’t know that their infiltrator is actually the love child of Osama bin Laden’s uncle and Saddam Hussein’s sister. Now here he is. Their nefarious plan is complete.
He was the last, but I don’t know if he was the first.
Beautiful!
Congratulations, us. Congratulations, America.
Not a protester to be seen — quite a contrast to the 50,000 who lined the route in 2000 and lobbed eggs at GWB. Not only didn’t Bush forego the walk to the White House, he wound up sneaking in the back door.
There were LOTS of flags during the swearing in, being waved with joy.
We just don’t seem to need to wave them them all the time to tell us who and what we hate the way Republicans do… (Yeah, that was harsh. But it’s what they do…)
I now live a block from Punahou School, which is where Obama went to H.S. and played basketball. We have a good view of the baseball field in front of the high school, where they’re now getting ready to start setting up for the annual Punahou Fair on Feb 6-7, which is a huge event here.
Which H.S. you graduate from is a big deal here.
Bob in HI
I have a memory of Kennedy and Eisenhower (maybe from pics) riding in a convertible with the top down during the parade and I think it was colder out than it is today.
But I believe you are correct about the actual walking phase starting with Carter. Or at least, the modern era of doing it (I’m sure some of the earlier Presidents walked or rode carriages)
Hilarious.
Well, a little farther down, they do have a note of optimism:
EW, are you still here?
I’ve heard of the “brack,” before – but it didn’t occur to me before…LOL.
Dick…and Dick too.
He’s listed as the first to walk with his family from the Capitol to the WH with his family after the ceremony.
Jefferson was the first to walk to and away from the ceremony…
And hey, did I mention that one of my ancestors was a flower girl at George Washington’s inauguration!! Yep, it’s true!
and today, it’s good riddance to that bad rubbish.
The whole world is watching — and celebrating with us.
Gives a new meaning to “a time and a place.”
The Whole World is Watching!!!!
This time, they’re liking what they see!!!
Finally.
Egregious, do you know the parade route? How soon will they reach 15th St., where you said he would walk again? Just curious — I’m not familiar with the landmarks, so it’s hard to tell from C-SPAN.
Very well said LS. I have all sorts of disagreements with things I expect Obama to do … but this is a very new moment and it is beautiful – and points to where we can go.
Well, he’s one of ‘the black Irish’ you know – those O’Bamas are very famous folks.
Kennedy was indeed in a convertible.
Well there were lots of people waving flags on the mall earlier. cool.
So many good, positive vibes out their…I’m expecting that crazy car to levitate momentarily!!!
Oh, and maybe flags are banned for the parade? security reasons? courtesy so folks can see better?
They are celebrating in Moneygall, Ireland. home of Obama’s great-great-great grandfather
Wow. 1968 flashback happening here! But, as you say, in a very good way!
He’s out again.
more likely if banned it would be for security
They’re out of the car again… Her coat doesn’t really look all that warm, after all!
My favorite Obama Line:
I love you back!!
My mother just phoned in her ‘concern’ about him being out of the car again. She would rather that he watch the parade from the Whitehouse.
I’m concerned too, but I truly believe that no harm will come to him today. Today he’s held in the palm of God’s hand, for all of us to love.
Why is the press poll being announced?
just a wag – but usually when there are lots of flags it’s because they were handed out by the event planners. i don’t like it because it’s using people as stage props for the pics. this is very nice, more focus on the people. almost has a demilitarized feel to me.
too funny!
al roker, blocked by a satellite truck, then shouts down BO, and Prez BO says “it’s warm!”. His first presidential interview! LOLOL.
Good afternoon. Seems like a fine day.
Tuned in just in time for Obama to tell the weather guy (Al Roker): It’s warm.
Michelle: “Barack, there’s the hotel. Did you remember to request the late checkout? Those fees are horrendous.”
The PA announcers chumming the crowd.
I have pretty darned confident there is not a person within 100 yards either direction of that motorcade who has not been throughly checked for anything at all that might be threatening
no complaints here! I’m glad. I’d be worried about visibility.
Owe you a drink. Hot tea?
KO just made a funny! Someone said “the White House is ready for them.” He said “Are you sure? I know the house is ready, but are they really ready for this?” (A moderately accurate paraphrase — I’m not a court reporter!)
Click on 7 and 8 for the parade route
Eat yer fuckin’ hearts out, Shrub and Deadeye.
Nothing will happen to BO today. He is in greater danger in smaller appearances…Secret Service is pretty experienced these days, as opposed to back when…Dang, they’ve protected W and Dick…the 2 most despised people in the world…
Godspeed Obama!!!
how bout a mocha? anything, as long as it’s warm!
haha!
Wow, that is some thick armor on that car
When Obama finished the speech at the 04 DNC, I immediately turned to my better half and said, “Obama ‘08. Why the hell not?” Sho’ nuff, ya dig!
For further details, see EW the other day:
http://emptywheel.firedoglake……/#comments
They didn’t really have to protect them much from the folks who read Malkin, et al., and that’s where my concern lies. Some of those people are freaking nuts.
LOL your right
That’s a short SS woman.
Thanks!
Ooops. I’m out of milk. But I do have whipped cream. How bout an Irish coffee?
Dayum… Joe Biden made some pretty, pretty sons… [slinks back into ignominy after making such a gross and sexist comment… but they are purty]
ABC just said it’s 28 outside, with a windchill making it closer to 16.
Brrr from sunny Californika.
The temp was reported as 28 with a wind chill of 16. In Chicago, I think this is called spring.
Biden’s all over the street, having the time of his life.
In FL it would be a new glacier age.
You’re so right. Something stopped that morning, and it didn’t restart for a generation. I wasn’t a Kennedy supporter (Adlai was my man), but he represented renewal. And then there was that terrible mid-morning speech in July,1965, when Johnson announced the need to send more troops to Vietnam, and we knew it was all over for us, for our dreams. And then just three years later the two assassinations. It’s been a long time coming.
I noticed that, too, when the door was opened. Looks like they stuck the rear of a limo onto the front of an Escalade.
How ’bout Joe Lowery, huh??! Even this atheist/agnostic thought he was fantastic. Does anyone even remember Rick Warren being there?
Lot of empty stands or they’ve just floated down to curbside.
Is it me or does it look like Joe is putting a lifetime of July 4th parade experience to good use ; ) It’s a hoot watching him work the crowd : )
Beat me to it ; )
If it were me, I’d be down curbside (If I were crazy enough to be in 28/windchill 16 degree weather
someone on the radio mentioned a “renewal of spirit” and that’s what this day means for me. I know reality will set in, but at least with some optimism.
For me, this is hope reborn after Bobby Kennedy was killed. It’s a lovely thing… it has feathers, you know. All in all, it’s good to be alive today!
Lowery really showed what a shallow boob Rick Warren is.
How funny, Aloha Hawaii band from frosty DC!
I’ve only heard stories but I’m glad that spirit of hope is alive and well
Yup. Disillusionment after disillusionment and trying to stop the pain…it is hard for the young to understand it, but it is the young…because they didn’t experience it directly, that have helped to move us out of that darkness.
It’s over…for now…it could sort of happen again…but there is a feeling that has transpired, because we taught our children about what happened…there is a feeling….this time..should something happen….it will be weathered differently. History is amazing.
lower was great. want to tell dmac i though so
sometimes a great nation.
Emily Dickinson (lordy, how I love her stuff) said of hope “I’ve heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea” and nothing was chiller or stranger than W’s reign.
I lift my glass to:
QUAKERGIRL!!!!!
She’s watching, and she’s proud!!!
(and getting ready to bloom in the Spring)
May the Shrub family fade into history, never to be heard from again.
QUAKERGIRL!!!
Damn, now ya made me cry again.
I can’t help thinking we all helped a bit in our own little individual way. I remember how angry I was in 2002, when they started ginning up the war, and there was nobody, literally nobody, to talk too. And the Democrats caved. And then the following year Dean declared, like John the Baptist. He got the renewal started.
There’s so much to do. We have to have strong unions again. It’s the next step.
bingo knut, the republicans have turned the very word into a perjurative
I remember when people used to go out of their way to buy union, the republican propaganda machine has made people vite against themselves and their children curse unions out and believe unions are somehow bad for the economy
we must change that view back to where unions are the default policy not the acception
Yes :( ((QUAKERGIRL)) and so many others who couldn’t stay to physically be here on this day, BUT I know they are watching and cheering along with us all :)
The little one has the biggest grin.
Don’t count on it. There’s a new book blowing the doors off the Boosh Dynasty:
http://russbaker.com/2008/12/13/hello-world/
If we don’t prosecute and bury them when we have the chance, they’ll be back. They always are.
We talked to friends. We voted. We sent money. We canvassed. We kept talking to friends. We prayed. We got angry. We went out and worked some more. We did what we could, each of us, in our own way. And it WORKED! God bless us, every one, it WORKED!
It’s gonna be okay.
!!!!

I love the drumline from Michelle’s old high School
Does anyone know…
Obama had a line about “we’ll extend our hand to those who have unclenched their fists…” Did he write that, or is that a famous quote from history? It’s a keeper either way.
Now there’s the difference between the white college/hs bands and AA bands. Them boys got some life in ‘em.
Loving the dancing first couple … oh yeah!
A friend of mine went to that school. Really loved that school. Nice to see them recognized here.
my lips hurt real bad.

You’re probably correct and I understand you’re jumping around on three threads, but you’re comment kind sounds to me like, hey, I have Black friends. Ya know?
There are white musicians with hip groove too. Some, if you heard them, you wouldn’t know what the color of their skin was. You’d only judge them by the content of the ability.
Just thought I’d let you know how I hear it.
Go NAVY!
How much longer? (And thanks for the lists.)
are you teasing me?
a while!
My parents were NAVY
Will the parade be done in time for the balls that start at 10p? *g* (After all, the Obamas need time to change their clothes. I wonder if Michelle will wear her hair in a fancy up style.)

I was wondering that too, the parade started late and there sure is a lot of stuff they have to do tonight.
I want to see the Obamas dance. I’ll bet they’re a heck of a lot better at it than anyone in living memory.
Are the girls going to any of them?
I’m not understanding the significance of that.
I must be thick this afternoon.
Crying from joy all day. Beautiful powerful inaugural speech. A wonderful wonderful day, and I’m pinching myself to make sure it is real.
I love that Obama and Biden are just hanging out, chatting like a couple of great friends. They look so comfortable with each other.
Navy went by and I cheered.
PS. Obama is HOT. Can I say that about my President?
Yep. It seems like a great relationship.
Delurking to thanks to all posters and commenters here at FDL for providing a lifeline over the last 4 yrs. This old hippie is VERY happy today.
Mad hippie love to ALL at FDL. Thanks.
rats, was hoping the Lippizaners would dance for us — bummer
Do they have a bathroom in the reviewing booth? O&B must not have had any coffee or tea at lunch; I haven’t seen them take a break yet.
Here here!

Perhaps it would be shorter if you listed those marching bands that aren’t in the parade?
Thanks LS, I’ve been thinking of her lately too
LOLOL!
poor Gregg’s tale of woe is upstairs
No thanks. Looked. Not going there.
I must be suffering from Ravens Disease.
