MSNBC reports that Senator Ted Kennedy, who has been in vigorous good spirits, collapsed at the Senate luncheon and was taken from the room on a stretcher.
There are ambulances on the premises, awaiting a report as to whether he would be treated on site or taken to a hospital.
UPDATE 3:38pm eastern:
Washington Hospital Center as reported by msnbc, Senator Kennedy is awake and answering questions.
UPDATE: 3:30pm msnbc
Senator Dodd re Kennedy "The good news is he’s going to be fine."
Senator Byrd’s office reports that he was not taken to a hospital, was in discomfort and it is not more serious than that.
UPDATE 3:08pm eastern:
Howard Fineman/msnbc live report:
Byrd pale looked ill, in discomfort, they called for medical staff and escorted Senator Byrd out. Then literally a minute or so later Kennedy began having convulsions. Sergeant made an announcement calling for medical staff immediately. People stood up in silence. He was in a wheelchair anyway, and was reclined back into what had turned into a hospital gurney. According to staff he appeared to be having consulvions as he was escorted out, with the others in the room standing in silence. Thinking of the frailty of us all.
More from Detroit Free Press
"Sen. Edward Kennedy has collapsed at a luncheon honoring President Obama. Paramedics have responded to the scene."
WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 (UPI) — U.S. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., collapsed and was taken from the luncheon at the Capitol marking the inauguration of Barack Obama as president.
ABC News reported Sen. Robert Byrd, D-WVa., was so upset he was removed from the luncheon as well.
The incident came before Congress presented Obama and Vice President Joe Biden crystal balls and photographs of the inauguration commemorating their ascension to office.
ABC initially said Kennedy, who has been battling brain cancer, suffered convulsions.
Obama speaking at the lunch, per Olbermann/MSNBC:
Our prayers are with Ted Kennedy and his family
Ted Kennedy was taken out of Barack Obama’s Statuary Hall Congressional luncheon after suffering an apparent seizure — a few minutes after Sen. Robert Byrd was removed in his wheelchair under the supervision of medical personnel.
"He was there when the voting rights act passed….so I would be lying to you if I did not say that right now a part of me is with him, I think that’s true for all of us," Obama told dignitaries gathered at his lunch . "It’s a joyous time but it’s also a sobering time..My prayers are with him and his family."
The pastor delivering the parting invocation offered a prayer for the Massachusetts Democrat and said he had "responded well" to medical personnel.
Byrd was conscious and had been having trouble eating, according to a witness.
Kennedy, who underwent brain cancer surgery last year, was taken to the Rayburn room after suffering an apparent convulsion during dessert, House officials told our Patrick O’Connor.
A police radio picked up a call for paramedics to help someone stricken with a seizure and Kennedy has been taken to a local hospital, O’Connor said. His condition isn’t yet known.

((((((Teddy)))))
CNN reporting that Kennedy had a seizure that went on for some time
Surely, it was too much excitement for him…Godspeed Teddy.
Sending healing energy and lots of love to Senator Kennedy
Remember, no matter what happens…today was a day he has worked for forever.
Senator Byrd was so upset at the sight that he had to be taken away as well.
Thanks Egregious.
My thoughts are with you, Teddy.
Yes. He was so happy earlier today — look at the photo.
My better half said the day Teddy and Caroline endorsed Obama that it guaranteed an Obama win, especially the Caroline part. Whatever is happening now, Teddy….ya did it, and ya got to see it, buddy!
This is so sad. The two are so devoted to each other.
Oh no. I remember how upset he was when he gave that tear-filled speech honoring Teddy
Late report he was having convulsions
What was in the Seafood soup!!!????
If what I’m seeing on MSNBC is a live feed, the folks at the luncheon appear to have heads bowed in prayer. Oh, probably just a closing invocation as they’re all leaving the luncheon. Whew.
(((Kennedy and Byrd)))
This is just scary.
Like you said earlier, probably too much excitement.
God bless you Sir, my best as always. A true supporter of freedom and America. God’s speed.
((((Byrd)))))….I saw him congratulate the President earlier…he was precious.
Byrd is fine … left without complications. Kennedy had a seizure.
And fuckin’ Tweety with the continuation of his elegiac crap.
The way the reporting is going…I’m pretty concerned at this point…for both of them.
Both…a silent prayer for Kennedy + benediction.
Yes.Wobblybits, I recall that sad solioquoy by Byrd .Just heartbreaking.
CSPAN reporting that Kennedy is being attended to by doctors.
If Kennedy seized, then he will be taken to the hospital for observation minimum. I would assume he will be started on diazepam or phenytoin since these can be given IV.
hope he makes a speedy recovery once again.
OT, http://www.foxnews.com/politic…..firmation/
Cornyn (R-ThugState) is blocking HRC’s confirmation.
I’m glad I switched over to CSPAN. Tweety just doesn’t know when to stop talking
Good about Byrd. Thanks.
Kennedy…convulsions…taken out…people in the room standing in silence…frightful…
Reality hits.
USA Today reports that Teddy has “responded well” to treatment so far…
Sigh. I’m surprised only not so surprised.
John Cornyan is trying to block the Clinton nomination.
Small oddity, both Sen Byrd and Sen Kennedy were seated at the same table.
They are saying that Sen Byrd felt ill first and whilst Medics were working on Sen Byrd, Sen Kennedy went into convulsions..My prayers with both of the Senators..:(
Okay, good.
seizures can be scary to witness. i’m told
Old, ill, frail, subzero temperatures and a lot of excitement are not necessarily a great combination. Prayers for both Senators.
Kennedy had a seizure, and it was very troubling to the onlookers, as seizures always are…Sounds like things are calming down.
Actually when he begins to talk is when he should stop.
MSNBC reports that Obama went to Kennedys sdie. Kerry Dodd and Hatch escorted Kennedy, who was talking, to the ambulance.
Indeed they are.
They sure can be. I remember being in 3rd grade when we were all called into the auditorium because there was a new kid in school who had a seizure disorder. Seizures were explained, and described, and we were told what to do (GET A TEACHER!). It took away the fear factor, and when he did in fact have a seizure in the hall we weren’t freaked out. Scared for him, but not freaked out.
I saw Kerry come back in.
Is he giving an reasons? Curious on what grounds he would object, after sailing through so many incompetents for so long.
Senator Byrd is fine — reported by CNN
how many different ways can you call someone an arsehole…. it’s like: get over it. you lost. you destroyed the country and the country threw you out. go away. oh, and PS Senator: President Polk should never have fought a war to expell Santa Ana from your state.
Oh, oh, a POW/MIA flag in the hall. Far out!!
All my best to Sen. Kennedy on this momentous day. I was overcome too.
’cause he’s John Cornyn. Does he need another reason?
I just heard briefly. The Clinton foundation stuff. I don’t know whether one person could block the nomination. I doubt it.
Report Kennedy doing much better before getting in Ambulance
Wow! And today I put my U.S. flag out, one sent to me by my Silver Star awarded WWII Dad. It was a joy to see it after eight years.
Citizen Loo Hoo:
The stand-in for Ed Schultz on Air America said that Mrs. Clinton was seen in the house building nose to nose screamin’ at the rat-bastard…it looks like the confirmation vote is bein’ “held” indefinately and if the Democrats lose another Senator it will be impossible to get ANYthing including confirmations out of the Senate unless Obama takes the gloves off and takes Cornyn and Mrs. McConnell down to the Senate lavatory and waterboards the motherfuckers.
Time for the parade?
Was there something new? I thought that had been aired…what to expect from Cornyn? He’s supported W on most everything.
Lightbrain Harry gets his first real test. Will he allow Cornyn to block the nomination or not, though I don’t know if a nomination can be blocked.
very cool.
ABC said that Kerry talked to Kennedy. So there is evidence Kennedy regained or never lost consciousness. Kerry then said he just thought Kennedy was tired which is a singularly stupid and uninformed statement to make.
Thanks to all for the updates.
Cornyn won’t win this one.
I love the colonial procession…very cool
I heard earlier (on either CNN or C-SPAN) that the butthead Cornyn was talking about a 1 day hold “because he had additional questions about contributions to Pres. Clinton’s Foundation.” He just wants to get his fuckin’ name in the paper and feel important.
Norske: I’m just chuckling at the scene you describe and at the fact that all that’s going on after listening to the lofty words of a new kind of President. LOL.
McCain’s opinion of this Cornyn fella is one thing he got right.
Cornyn supports shrub except where there is a position more irrational and further to the right of shrub, then he’s a maverick.
HRC’s nomination is pretty much like any other. The “hold” is a variant of the 60 votes needed for cloture.
So of course, Harry will honor it from Box Turtle Cornyn.
(We really did try to knock him out of office down here)
I have a houseful of revelers showing at 6 (a little over 4 hours from now) and MUST get in gear here.
Thank you all for being here with me. YOU are the ones with whom I shared this amazing and historical day and I’ll never forget it.
God bless you, alllllll de’ pups!
prayers too for Senator’s Kennedy and Byrd.
And for Obi, of course.
Are you talking about this John Cornyn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvwe3L5cO3w
OK, we’ve got a parade!
Love the look on the Obamas’ faces as she takes his arm — it looks like they’re saying to each other “Yeah, we’d like to hold hands but we’re expected to do it this way.” *Grin*
(((siri))) you go girl! party like it’s 2009!
Michelle gave the officer in charge a peck. What a great gesture.
I would love to know what Michelle and Barack are talking about right now
I love a parade
Beat of the drum
toom toom
ha, I saw that too. very sweet and charming. I truly wonder how Michele is feeling right now. Wouldn’t it be great to sit down and chat with her?
Cheers Siri, have fun!!
KO up with reports about Kennedy that seem hopeful, from Senators at the luncheon.
Citizen Marion in Savannah:
The gran mal seizure is always scary to witness and basically impossible to subdue without immediate IV drug therapy (sometimes)…usually we jest keep ‘em comfortable and protect from aspiration and wait and hope. I saw Senator Ted lifted into the ambulance and it appeared that he was alert and responsive…who knows how long he’s got but it could be up to a year or so with episodes like this one remindin’ him ta take his meds.
Sure…he wants to shame the stupid limelight with Vitter..
LOL!!!
Weeeeee…
Tacky tag. Little more umph please.
She must be so proud of him that she could just about bust — and fully aware of what they’re about to step into as well.
Oooops, Meant “share the….”
Had a girlfriend once who was epileptic. Carried a bite stick in my pocket. Still keep one in the truck.
Everybody will be okay…at least that’s my feeling at this point. Seizures are scary to watch, and he’s had them before. He has the best care. It was just too much for Kennedy and Byrd…not to mention…Seafood Soup and Bird Braces…
Yes. I really like her and Dr. Biden too.
Surely the strangest of realities.
Me three.
Citizen SouthernDragon:
It’s your turn ta march again Brother Dragonman…I am even gunna join the VVA color guard next Fun Fest…this is a new day Brother, beat the drum, step high and shoulder yer arms!!
One interesting point that tweety had amongst all his noise is that this weather is really ####### people and especially on fragile elderly folks. very tough weather.
Frickin’ Tweety nattering on about what Hillary will do at State, and gurgling about the “hawkish tone” of what he’s heard today. Mercifully Rachel is there to “talk him down.” He is SUCH a dull tool.
Man, that armoured limo don’t get on 35mpg. *g*
The car they have is quite a hot rod…kinda idles irregularly though..what’s up with that?? Busted???
Senator Dodd saying that Sen Kennedy will be fine.
There was one hanging outside the capitol as well. Some people never get over it.
I’m a sailor. You ever see sailors march? Laughing stock, we are.
And we have no Bu$h to reign on OUR parades, any longer.
Huzzah!
You’re right. I ain’t over it. Not until the last one is accounted for. You got a problem with that?
OK. Now that the scare is over, I just wanted to point out that the crystal bowls are made by Lenox China, an American company that makes china since 1889 or something. They’ve provided WH china for presidents and dignitaries and yes, us regular folks. You can check out the bowls and other WH stuff on their website lenox.com
That is all.
We don’t use the “bite sticks” anymore ‘cuz of incidents of patients bitin’ thru ‘em and further injurin themselves. Positioning and turnin’ the head usually works…a towel or folded washcloth works too.
Bet you gat a curl on the cap though, SD?
Hahahaha…Tweety got all upset when Al Roker referred to the tingle in his leg….hahahahahha…first time I’ve seen Tweety speechless…bless his heart…he just gets so danged excited…That’s okay too.
I would much rather it was done publicly so we all can see that it IS Torture!! Then they go after BushCO.
Well, my Honda Civic Hybrid gets 40+ mpg, but I doubt that Solange (I name my cars — you got a problem with that?!) would keep President Obama safe. His height wouldn’t be a problem because Mr. Marion in Savannah is 6′3″, but we don’t have bulletproof anything…
sheez gat = got
(Can we have ‘edit’ back, now that Obama is POYUS?)
Yeppurs. Jest like that young sailor they showed briefly earlier.
Do you all have to start off on the same swell? ;-)
but your synchronised swimming, now, that’s something else!
Not to mention the carrier landings…
FunnyD
POTUS!!
This mind-finger-qwerty stuff.
Too many ‘variables’ or sumthin’ today.
Guess I is just giddy.
;~)
That’s exactly what we were told to do when I was 8 or 9, and I just turned 63. That’s not new advice! (They did mention “bite sticks,” but only for a teacher to touch…)
I name my cars.
that’s a lot of po-po out there.
priceless moment, i agree. too funny. the look on tweety’s face!!! bwahahaha!
OK we have a parade!
Yes!!!!
Ding, dong..la, la, la, la, la…da ding, ding dong, da ding, da ding ding dong…
Who’d a thunk it!!!
Well, I call mine names too, sometimes.
Usually in the winter, when I’ve been laying on my back, underneath, that kinda thing.
From earlier! I, speaking fro myslef, have NEVRE made a tpyo!
Those hard white plastic jobs? We had to take an axe to one to get it to break. But I’ve always got something I can use, can’t always run back to the truck.
Good point. Bite sticks are a myth. When a person seizes and has generalized convulsions, they don’t have voluntary control to open their mouths. Trying to stick something in the mouth could break teeth and not accomplish anything. The main thing is to put the person in a position where they don’t injure themselves by hitting something or falling.
This motorcade is going at standing pace
Mrs. Knut went through one the day after she started law school. Scariest thing I ever witnessed in my life. I heard a thud in the bathroom, and there she was on the floor shaking. I thought she’s slipped and broken her neck. It went on for 20 minutes. she was out cold.
Damn, why don’t they get something like the Pope-mobile. With the darkened windows it could be Deadeye Dickhead in there.
Citizen Knut:
Take some advice from a hard core anti-war Viet Nam vet…don’t make an ass of yourself and become a tool amd a parody of the politics that has been twisted into a characature of “troop hating hippies”. Vets were all trained that we don’t leave fallen commrads on the field…it ain’t political but a whole bunch of fascists coopted the need to account for the missing and used it to keep reconcilliation from happening with Viet Nam and used the push to close the seach as a wedge to reinforce the “dirty rotten hippy, troop haters” image. Be careful when you step into someone’s history without a good map.
That car reminds me of a car with a mind of its own…lights blinkin’ weirdly….quite a machine.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/
White House’s new website is up…….
Thanks Norske, when I had training, the sticks were not recommended because of damage to teeth, if nothing else was handy and it could be inserted, a leather belt was used to protect teeth. Was going to suggest SD check with local paramedics for latest recommendations and procedures for Grand Mal Seizures.
Bite your tongue!!! Hahahaha
ABC reporting that Kennedy’s son is reporting that Ted is awake and talking at the hospital.
I’m such a moron…the irregular sound of the engine was the sound of the 20 or so motorcycles…D’OH!
Well yu ib berry rucky, Marion,
I beeb jest ‘boot out muh mine somtyme.
Wooden beeb bhad bub I’b da profractionish …
So I guess the Obama girls have been excused? It’s been a long exciting day. I know I’d be antsy.
The car will shortly be speaking to the public.
No fighting, sniping or being uncivil to one another today. Today is a day of celebration.
Sen. Byrd’s office is saying that he left the luncheon because he was upset that Sen. Kennedy was taken ill, and that he (Sen. Byrd) wasn’t ill at all.
Not a myth. When I worked at VA there were bite sticks available everywhere. Inserting them takes a little effort and can be done without injuring the patient. The trick is to get to the patient at the beginning of the seizure.
They are in the car with their parents…I just saw them waving.
just a gentle reminder
Kinda different from eggs being thrown..huh?!
Incredible. I thought bite sticks had been done away with years ago. They truly make no sense from a medical point of view.
Well, it’s been 10 years at least since I had to use one and I’ve usually got a shirt on so I’m covered.
Actually, this has been one of the most celebratory days I can remember here. If there have been 2 or 3 comments that were “buzz kills” that’s a lot. How can you not celebrate if you have the TV on? I realize he won’t be allowed to do it, but I remember when President Carter got out of the limo and walked the parade route with Roselyn. (Yeah, I’m an old fart — anybody got an issue with that!?!!?)
OT 7 cabinet appointees confirmed so far today.
And the idiot who tries to stick their fingers in their mouth…..good way to loose some digits….
As a nurse I’ve seen lots of seizures and various kinds but the worst was the springer spaniel that we owned……. the poor guy would seize even on meds starting with grand mal (the biggie one) and then go straight into a clonic-tonic where they get stiff all over, his tongue and mouth would turn black…….. he would loose control of all body functions and was very confused when it was all over. Had him on 60mg of Phenobarb for a couple of years and he would seize about 1x year……. eventually the drugs put him in liver failure at the young age of 8…….
Yes, ma’am.
rachel maddow stating that cornyn doing more insult than injury in blocking clinton. showing his obstructionism on this day of nonpartisan celebration. booyah.
LOL – that’s exactly what my former sailor DH always says. Sailors seem rather proud of that.
Just a fur person update — Victoria, the Siamese cat, Empress Of All The Known Galaxies, who has never, ever, not even once gotten up to curl up in front of the TV is still there. Looking very self-satisfied… (It’s odd — I always thought she had secret Republican leanings, being a monarchist and all…)
just leave the yellow cloud behind /s
I was on the roof of the Occidental Hotel, just down the street from Treasury, during Kennedy’s parade.
Wow! That was fast! And a good omen, too. Obama’s staff is ready to roll!
Bob in HI
I heard that that several of Obama’s cabinet have been confirmed, anyone have the list?
Keeps us out of a lot of parades in windy 9 degree weather. That way we can sit in a nice warm room, drink really strong coffee, smoke cigarettes and tell sea stories.
but i’m guessing that she is also wise? after all she chose you to live with. perhaps she is feeling very self-satisfied to see the humans are finally made the change she been telling us was needed?
I heard Salazar, Shinseki, Chu, can’t remember the rest – no Clinton.
You may be right about that! She joined the family during the Bush reign as a rescue kitteh, so she may have had the wrong idea about us. (She’s never tried to blog, as Hoover does on a VERY regular basis.) She may just be feeling vindicated!
Eg is upstairs :)
And I was on the Capitol ground during 1st Clinton; it was cold, but probably not so cold as the JFK or today. The Clintons walked part of the way..looked very casual and at ease.
Obviously Cornyn’s daddy neglected to impart one important piece of information to him, to wit:
If you want to be an asshole be prepared to pay the consequences.
Speaking of parades, there’s a Parade thread upstairs
And are Sea stories the sam thing as war stories? And fairy tales?
(You do know the difference between a ‘war story’ and a fairy tail? Fairy tales begin “Once upon a time…” and the War Story begins “No shit, there I was…”)
LOL!
lol. we humans can be very slow learners. *g*
Who’d’a thunk it? The Washington Times seems to have some relatively up to date information on the confirmations.
It was cold. I had to trot from the Capital steps to the hotel. The manager knew my dad and let us up on the roof.
Yep, same thing and start the same way, although with sailors its, “No fuckin’ shit, I was…” Each and every sentence must contain the f word at least once.
Figured that was the case (one of my first cousins was retired Navy and a couple of others served a tour or two)
Yes. Seen grand mal seizures three times in my life; first time was the student teacher in 11th grade English class, just before end-of-year finals.
It’s worse for the onlookers than the victim, I understand.
