Americans want to be kept safe, but they want it done by methods its leaders are willing to publicly acknowledge, which comply with both the letter and spirit of pre-Bush American and international laws. They want a finer balance struck, one that acknowledges America’s aspirations as well as its fears, not one built from the dark sides of Darth Cheney.
