From Bush’s farewell address:
As we address these challenges — and others we cannot foresee tonight — America must maintain our moral clarity. I’ve often spoken to you about good and evil, and this has made some uncomfortable. But good and evil are present in this world, and between the two of them there can be no compromise. Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere. Freeing people from oppression and despair is eternally right.
Truly, the worldview of a dangerous simpleton.
Was Stalin evil? Then why did the US ally with him? Mao? Then why did Nixon meet with him? Haven’t we been told that Communism is evil? Then why do we trade with China and Vietnam? Is the subjugation of women evil? Then why do we call Saudi Arabia an ally? Were not the deaths of a few hundred thousand innocent Iraqis the result of the "advancement of an ideology?" Oh right, that’s different. Was Saddam evil? Then why did the United States sell him arms? Is terrorism evil? Then why did we arm the mujahideen? Is torture evil? Only when it’s done to Americans. Is genocide, slavery and racism all evil? Guess that means we’re evil.
It’s frightening that this morally and intellectually lazy man has been running the country for 8 years.
Almost over.

Mornin’ BT.
Thank God it’s almost over!
It’s frightening that this morally and intellectually lazy man has been running the country for 8 years.
Absolutely. Why do you think everyone in this country has been so edgy for the last 8 years?
And don’t forget the MSM who have enabled this idiot for 8 years.
I’ve been stewing in serious anger for 8 years, from the moment of the Supreme Court ruling. It’s definitely effected my personality.
Putting 1.5 million Palestinians in the largest prison in the world without adequate food or medicine or energy is the fete of a great moral authority (/s) Bombing the shit out of them all is “good” What a fuckin hypocrite.
94 hrs & 22 min
Dissociation from reality. Exactly what has he be doing for the last 8 years? Lying the US into war that kills uncounted innocent civilians. Torture, including the torture of children.
I’ll go out on a limb (not) and say George W. Bush is, in fact, EVIL.
Hey, we survived!
Did you notice how much different Tweety’s tune was last night than it was a few years ago? NOW he thinks junior is a putz.
Must disagree with you BT. morally and intellectually EVIL man
Did Lee find his way over?
Good one BT.
Expect a lot of the MSM to say negative things about Bush. It’s only a few days before he’s out of office. It’s “safe” now to criticise him. They’re hoping we forget the sycophantry of the last 8 years.
He must have removed his nose from Fighter Pilot’s flight suit crotch. About damn time!
I watched the PBS show American Experiences this week about Nixon and it was very interesting as the campaign methods were the same, the language and framing is the same and if you were not looking at a documentary about that era then you would think it was the modern Repug party. The phrasing for the war, the turned a corner, that cannot leave because the military would have died in vain. I
t really was freaky
i typed this bit up from gulag archipelago when i learned that solzhenitsyn had died last summer. imo, when it comes to good and evil in the world, there’s a lot of wisdom in these few words:
Peggy Noonnan,”The Nooner” was on teevee today. But I turned the sound off.
Good one. I like it.
then there’s:
Junior, we provide[ed] a roof over your head, food on your plate, and clothes on your back, and yet you wanna sit around complaining. If that’s not good enough for you hey so long sucker, see ya, bon voyage, arrivederci, later loser, goodbye, good riddance, peace out, let the doorknob hit ya where the good Lord split ya, don’t come back around here no more, hasta la vista, kick rocks, and get the hell out.
-Damon Wyans as Michael Kyle in “My Wife and Kids.”
An argument for Chimpy and Darth to visit the Hague for a long, long time; as they appear to be in the first stages of Solzhenitsyn’s journey.
Tweety is just following which way the wind blows.
Sloth is a sin and Bush proves its a deadly one. Also if God is all knowing then ignorance is evil.
That could have been written specifically for Bush and Cheney.
I hope he does not get a Man Crush on Obama. That guy just needs to find a man and get laid….if any would have him?
Maybe Drudge?
The GOP must be using the same advertising agency.

perhaps. and also a reminder not to follow that path ourselves because all our country’s evil does not reside solely in bush, cheney, et al. or indeed in any person.
Dunno. This was the speech I was looking for from shrub:
(as he stands, head bowed, preferably in penitent sackcloth) –
“I am speaking to you today to acknowledge the great folly I brought about with my mismanagement of the affairs of this great nation. I failed, in all material respects, I failed. I failed totally. I failed completely. I failed you, as your elected president and as a human being. I betrayed the Constitution, my oath of office, the American people, and the very principles on which this nation was founded. I am not here to explain my actions or to justify them. I am just here to apologize, and to say that I will cooperate fully with my successor, his attorney general and the Congress, with the investigations that my actions so clearly mandate. I have also instructed the Vice President and all of my officials to be similarly cooperative. Again, please join me in prayer, for the future and soul of this great nation…” (at which point, he falls to his knees, breaks down and weeps, and Laura and the girls have to drag him out of the oval office.)
It does seem to be concentrated to the density of a neutron star in Cheney though.
Huh?!? Wait, I’m so confused . . . and didn’t watch last night . . . did he really say this: “Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere”
Democracy is an ideology and the war in Iraq, which has killed how many Iraqi innocents, was purportedly fought to bring democracy to Iraq. Guess he’s right and at the same time “wrong every time.”
But it’s not “murder” if we do it, silly.
It isn’t over yet. Just when I thought there would be no more repellent, shocking acts from Bush, he’s gone and done it. He declared January 18th, starting this Sunday, the day before MLK Day, National Sanctity of Human Life Day. I understand that this is meant as a slap in the face to reproductive rights, which is bad enough, but it is sickening to me that this man who is responsible for so many (how many?) deaths would mindlessly talk about the sanctity of human life! I was an adult during the corrupt Nixon years and Johnson’s disastrous war escalation, but I have never been anywhere near as disgusted by a President as I am by this one.
And Please Please Please don’t execute me for warcrimes!
..nor, in the minds of neocons, is it murder if it is foreigner brown people doin’ the dyin’
We are not in their Authoritarian ingroup we are not Human in their eyes.
“Please don’t kill me…heh heh heh.”
I wonder when the Neocons will realize that Bush’s ingroup finds them usefull but not Human?
now to you have me worried – is there a supernova shock wave on it’s way?
I stole that off a Bush Joke, Bush said about a woman on death row that he executed’s last words his joke wasn’t funny.
But in context of Bush’s own inhumanity its funny now.
All things considered, we lucked out. A year and a half ago, if one is to believe Sy Hersh, and I am one who does, we were headed for war with Iran. The fleet was assembling, the MSM gongs were ringing, the Congress had been brought into line by declaring the Revolutionary Guards a ‘terrorist organization.’ The only thing standing us and potential armageddon were the Bush-I plants in the DOD. of whom Gates was probably the most important. I’m counting my blessings, few as they are.
Yeah, that’s what I was riffin’ off too. Poor Karla Faye Tucker.
I agree. It’s amazing he didn’t do more damage.
You know what’s freaky? Reading the history of Warren Harding’s campaign and seeing the whole thing all over again. The rethug approach goes back to the 1920s — probably before, but the propagandizing of the American people in 1917-1918 made the rest duck soup for them. When one looks back on this history, one is astounded at the continuity of the Republican programme and approach to politics.
If Gates really stood between Bush/Cheney and war with Iran, I bet we’ll hear about it in the first 100 days. Those whistleblowers coming out of the woodwork are going to keep things interesting through the summer.
She repented and was Born Again just like Bush, but Mercy is beyond him.
can. not. wait. for. bush. to. be. over.
I want Bush to have as his Warcrimes lawyer that Texas Death Row Lawyer who fell asleep in Death Row Trials!
yup, there will be whistleblowers. we are not alone in our disgust. we are not the only ones who have been scared silly by bushco. i can feel a huge sense of relief coming that i wasn’t planning on.
The Cheney Presidency — i.e. W’s first term — was just a continuation and expansion of Nixon’s view of the Presidency — when the President does it is it legal.
Really? He did? I thought it would take congressional action for something like this. Course I guess we have National Banana Day and other nonsense…
Which is exactly why Nancy “Impeachment is off the table” Pelosi has been such a devesatingly bad leader.
Chimp’s born again schlock was part of the Bush family’s manipulative, concerted campaign to tap into the Religious Right. (He probably thought Karla Faye was it faking too.)
See: http://www.religiondispatches……age=entire
one of Cheney’s life goals was to repair the damage that the laws made to reign in Nixon did to the office of the presidency. he disagreed with the legislative response to Nixon’s crimes (Cheney was on the team, of course, so this is a conflict of interest) and sought to reverse these limitations on the modern presidency. fucker. he thinks he’s king.
”damage” would be in Cheney’s opinion, not mine, of course.
In addition to what crap Bush said last night, his facial expressions and mannerisms were just plain creepy nuts.
I’m still waiting to know the other half of it…
It isn’t a national holiday. You’ll get your mail that day, but it’s a national disgrace day.
that speech last night was a mess … Bush talked about the wonderful White House where Jefferson lived. he has no clue of the history of the WH or anything else.
and cheney sitting there in the faux subservient role. go. away.
and ”y’all got to go on with your lives after 9/11 … while ah couldn’t” … EXCUSE fucking ME?
poor georgie. just. go. away.
Does he not realize that applies to him and his administration as well?
With all the Sick Psychos on this web, no wonder our country is going to hell especially with a Fraud entering, Desecrating our white house….Please go to Venezuela, or Cuba, or Spain, or better yet Iran. Maybe you all will get your Worthless heads [Moderator: edited to remove advocacy of violence]
Hey good looking, what you got cooking?
If you have read the Book write a Diary then maybe we can spotlight it to the MSM KO and Rachel might be interested everyone will be doing Bush retrospectives for the next month.
I want the press to talk about Bush as much as they can he drives GOP poll numbers down)
Spain?
Haven’t read it yet (just the excerpts) but that’s a fine idea…thanks!
Thank you and welcome to FireDogLake.
I’ll bet she’s never been to Spain, but has been to Oklahoma…
Spain. Huh. I don’t think they chop heads off in Spain, but they do in Saudi Arabia!
karaT — what do you have against the rule of law? It’s supposedly what you people are fighting about with Venezuela, Cuba, Spain (give me a break but I’ll indulge your lunacy) and Iran. The President and his political appointees are not above the law and must follow it, even if they don’t like it or it makes their jobs “harder”. That’s our system.
I’m sure your lax view of the law will follow “a Fraud” into the WH, right? No, I’m certain you’ll cry and complain about every little decision you don’t like by saying it is criminal and an independent prosecutor (perhaps Ken Starr) should investigate. You will be saying this a billion times over the next 4 to 8 (maybe 12 to 16) years about things that aren’t even close to being illegal just like you did with Clinton. Enjoy.
Oh, and I don’t feel like leaving my country because of people like you. I just want your influence to go away and to make my country all that it can be rather than be content with what it has become.
I thought the leftwingers won the election when the right party claimed a train station bombing was the Basque terror group on no evidence.
Later it was found to be Al Quieda. Is Spain still bad?
Seriously, we’ll be grieving this era for a long time, but it’s difficult to process it because of the on-going crises. In that respect, it reminds me of the events of the 60s or the AIDS epidemic in the 80s in that you don’t have time to process an event before the next extreme event occurs. KaraT is right that many of us are mentally ill: the result of all of this is that many of us have a form of PTSD.
Franco’s Spain was bad. How much have they changed since then?
PTBD – Post Traumatic Bush Disorder
93 hrs & 12 min
PTBD. Exactly
My mom had a story about a Nun fleeing Spain who pretended that she was single and flirted with a Sea Captain to get to Mexico.
The Sea Captain kept coming around because her eyes were so beautiful. Afraid that Franco would send people after her if the Sea Captain found out the truth she gave the Sea Captain a present a fancy Box and told him not to open it until he was out to Sea again as a going away gift.
In the box were her eyes.
93 hours is too long
My Mom heard this story from the Nuns.
Kara is right…when you guys are faced with Sharia law, you’ll all wish you had listened ….
In the future provide links to back up your assertions that Cuba etc are chopping off heads if you say something here you have to back it up.
We require this of everyone otherwise people would say whatever they want.
Regular news organizations please no right wing nutcase links, we accept left wing links true but we still hold it as less creditable until we get an MSM Main Stream Media report.
We don’t like the MSM here much but we do need them.
We are not being mean. I’ve been called out lots of times.
Is that different how from the Bible Belters trying to make the Bible the law of the land?
yeah, yeah, yeah, when we are all faced with Sharia law — or the law according to so called compassionate (pseudo-Christian) conservatives — we’ll wish we had listened and held them to account for the plethora of misdeeds they’ve inflicted upon this nation without any hint of remorse. But no, we on the left (and sane thinking people on the right) will want to move beyond all this, so, feel fortunate, your kind won’t be rounded up and put in rehabilitation camps. Rather, we’ll continue to invite you to the table to talk about “ideas” and how we can all “work together” to fix America. We’re much nicer than you are, but your self-righteousness won’t let you acknowledged that.
I had a nightmare that the punishment for dissent is to be trapped on an up is down elevator for eternity with karaT and FreedomNow.
Methinks Jane’s appearance on Washington Journal this A.M., along with prominent display of FDL.com on TV screen has brought out the loonies.
Just thinkin
Venezuela? and run by atheists Cuba but are Catholic, or Spain is run by the Left last I heard Iran is the only Sharia law country in the bunch.
Spain being a bad place would be news to me but hey prove me wrong are they chopping off heads?
I thought the EU including Spain was anti Death Penalty?
Yes, the Bible doesn’t advocate stoning women or any human being. A knowledge of and respect for Good and Evil is at the Foundation of the Declaration AND the Constitution of the United States.
Spain went chicken after the Terrorist bombing. We must not follow their example.
Sorry I want Edit back please!

Franco’s Spain was better than today’s Spain. The business sector grew and the United States partnered with the Spanish by 3 fold during Franco’s rule.
The trollies remind me why I started coming ’round here to begin with. I love this little island full of freakishly smart activist types.
Sharia Law is now the law of Iraq, thanks to Miserable “chimpy poo” Failure. Congratuations!
The trains ran on time too!
Yeah Right! Spain was so great lots of Spanish immigrated to Mexico for a better life my Mom knew a few of them.
Nope Jefferson was a Deists God created a watch and then let it run on its own.
In 1803 Jefferson did not believe in the divinity of Jesus, but he had high esteem for Jesus’s moral teachings, which he viewed as the “principles of a pure deism, and juster notions of the attributes of God, to reform [prior Jewish] moral doctrines to the standard of reason, justice & philanthropy, and to inculcate the belief of a future state.”[68] Jefferson did not believe in miracles. Biographer Merrill D. Peterson summarizes Jefferson’s theology:

Spain is chopping off heads is that a New Right Wing Talking point?
Deism is the belief that a supreme natural God exists and created the physical universe, and that religious truths can be arrived at by the application of reason and observation of the natural world. Deists generally reject the notion of supernatural revelation as a basis of truth or religious dogma. These views contrast with the dependence on divine revelation found in many Christian,[1] Islamic and Judaic teachings.
Deists typically reject most supernatural events (prophecy, miracles) and tend to assert that God (or “The Supreme Architect”) has a plan for the universe which he does not alter either by intervening in the affairs of human life or suspending the natural laws of the universe. What organized religions see as divine revelation and holy books, most deists see as interpretations made by other humans, rather than as authoritative sources.

Last night GWB talked about Afghanistan where women were stoned in the streets – now thanks to His wunerful policies they just get acid thrown in their faces. Heckof a job Bushie.
92 hrs & 36 min
What GOP press flack let him say that after the news was full of the women burned by acid story? The GOP is not even trying to make a believable message.
Bush should fire the person.
Madison and Washington weren’t deists, but all led to the First Amendment. We don’t do stoning in this country. That stoning is still done in parts of Iraq is shameful, but it is not in most areas where we have full country (such as Baghdad, Fallujah, Mosul, and working on Basra…). The Iranians are (as usual creating trouble). Fortunately the New Government of Israel led by Bibi Netanyahu will deal with them…
Everyone is getting fired today

Did Madison and Washington write the Declaration and the Constitution?
James Madison, Jr.[1] (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836) was an American politician, the fourth President of the United States (1809–1817), and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Considered to be the “Father of the Constitution”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Madison
Deism and the founding fathers
Deism was a religious philosophy in common currency in colonial times, and some founding fathers (most notably Thomas Paine, who was an explicit proponent of it) are identified more or less with this system. Nevertheless a number of early presidents are sometimes identified as holding deist tenets, though there is no president who identified himself as such. The following Presidents are often identified as having some degree of deistic beliefs:[6]
* George Washington
* Thomas Jefferson
* James Madison
* James Monroe
* John Tyler
* Abraham Lincoln
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R…..Presidents
Is Wikipedia Wrong?
No…I’m using the term Founders…religious men all, in a generic sense…
Yeah, cuz “Bibi” did such a wonderful job previously. Just out of curiosity, are you an American or an Israeli? If an American, why do you care? If an Isreali, mourn the loss of your nation’s trashmen, Bush and Cheney, things (hopefully) will change. The US can’t afford to keep funding your antics.
Ok but Deists are about as close to Atheists as you can get and still believe in a Creator.
Jefferson had interesting things to say about religion.
I do like the way you think:)
Thank you, same here.;)
It’s so funny, I used to be faithful church attender and now, I’ve had it pushed in my face so much I don’t think I can do it anymore. This president has about done me in for churching.

Just how long did you spend in Spain under Franco? I was there for a little over 2 years so tell me some lies.
Yeah, fascism is awesome!

So, are you registered as an agent of a foreign country?
Just thinking humorously, wouldn’t it be great if he was charged with war crimes and had to be defended by (former AG) Alberto Gonzales? He was, under Texas law, fully qualified as a real estate lawyer to handle an important capital case.
One of the important aspects of our government is committees — group decision-making in Congress and the S. Court and to a large extent in the Executive too.
Jefferson wrote the first draft(s) of the Decl. of Independence, but it was edited by others, including Ben Franklin.
It’s a wonderful document.
I’ve never heard though whether Tom Paine may have had a hand in the Decl. of Ind. or the Constitution. He wrote powerfully.
Bush is just tryin’ to put Shinola on his s***. If he really believed in this crap then we wouldn’t be allowing the Egyptians to mediate between Hamas and the Israelis. We wouldn’t have started talking with Fatah.
And Ronald Wilson Reagan and George HW Bush would have been impeached by the Republicans for selling SAM ground-to-air missiles to the Ayatollah. There’s some moral clarity for ya!
