FROM BANTUSTAN TO INTERNMENT CAMP TO ANIMAL PEN

Since its beginnings over a century ago, the Zionist project of creating a state for the Jewish people in the eastern Mediterranean has faced an intractable challenge: how to deal with indigenous non-Jews — who today comprise half of the population living under Israeli rule — when practical realities dictate that they cannot be removed and ideology demands that they must not be granted political equality. From these starting points, the general contours of Israeli policy from left to right over the generations have been clear: First, maximize the number of Arabs on the minimal amount of land, and second, maximize control over the Arabs while minimizing any apparent responsibility for them.

On the first score, Gaza is a resounding success: Although it covers only 1.5 percent of the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, it warehouses one out of every four Palestinians living in the entire country. But on the second count, Gaza’s density has made it very difficult to manage and its poverty makes it an eyesore before the world community. Thus, Palestinian resistance and, to a lesser extent, international constraints, have forced Israel to revise its balance of responsibility and control several times. Each phase of this ongoing experiment can be understood through spatial metaphors of increasingly constricted scope: bantustan, internment camp, animal pen…

Israel now treats the territory less like an internment camp and more like an animal pen: a space of near total confinement whose wardens are concerned primarily with keeping those inside alive and tame, with some degree of mild concern as to the opinions of neighbors and other outsiders.

These reductions, as approved by the Israeli Supreme Court on January 30 and as first implemented on February 7, will be calibrated to ensure that the “essential humanitarian needs” of the population are met. In November, the court endorsed the same standard in permitting reductions of the amount of Israeli fuel sold in Gaza. DISENGAGEMENT AND “ESSENTIAL HUMANITARIANISM”

In order to understand the management differences between an internment camp and an animal pen, it may help to start with the place where Israel’s control over Gaza is most physically manifest: the crossings…

Even if it was possible to implement and was done with the best of intentions, the logic of “essential humanitarianism” (it is unclear what would constitute the “inessentially” humanitarian) promises nothing more than turning Gazans one and all into beggars — or rather, into well-fed animals — dependent on international money and Israeli fiat. It allows Israel to keep Palestinians and the international community in perpetual fear of an entirely manufactured “humanitarian crisis” that Israel can induce at the flip of a switch (due to the embargo, Gaza’s power plant only has enough fuel at any one time to operate for two days[15]). And it distracts from, and even legitimizes, the destruction of Gaza’s own economy, institutions and infrastructure, to say nothing of ongoing colonization elsewhere in Israel-Palestine. The notion of “essential humanitarianism” reduces the needs, aspirations and rights of 1.4 million human beings to an exercise in counting calories, megawatts and other abstract, one-dimensional units measuring distance from death.

If you’re truly interested in evenhandedness, rather than sarcasm, perhaps you might recognize that Hamas charter calling for the elimination of Israel is something that makes negotiations look a tad unpromising to the Israelis. It’s rather unlikely that Israel would hesitate to recognize Hamas or refuse to talk to them if they give that up.

I think you’re the first to say the Gazan rockets weren’t hitting Israel proper, but only ‘illegal Israeli settlements’. Strangely, I think that phrase is a non sequitor since an Israeli settlement would be within Israeli territory and therefore legal.

Completely EPU’d, wish to restate a comment I made on Blue Texan’s post re a video of support for Israel which I was asked an opinion.

I am particularly disheartened after watching the video for which I gave the link at #70. I would appreciate your views on that film.

My “opinion” is as follows:

Thank doG that kind of ignorance is not given the time of day or validation in the European media other that in reference to the US provincialism. It was what I expected from brain-dead, incurious, propaganda deluded, believers of a lie. Not one showed the slightest knowledge of history, of their country, of the people of the ME, of Zionism, of the Hate culture that has become Israel. These are truly warped, twisted and heart ugly people with psychotic delusions of persecution, willing to teach their hate to any and all who might cross their paths; a truly pathetic life. They all forget as well the armed resistance put up in the Warsaw ghetto against the greatly superior German overlords, and they deny the Palestinian resistance the same rights; how convenient.

Utter contempt for that breed of animal, hard to reconcile their connection with humanity. Break an unjust law, boycott all things Israeli until that cancer no longer exists.

I would only add that the anti-boycott law is unenforceable in addition to being unjust, if you think about it. I want to be on record as an opponent of the Zionist movement and state of Israel due to the barbarianism and hate they represent. When their victims forgive their transgressions against civilization, is when I will reconsider my position, not a moment before. Otherwise, Zionism and the state of Israel must be terminated.
