Joe.My.God makes a great point about LGBT hosts on Saturday Night Live: Last night, Neil Patrick Harris was only the fourth OUT host SNL has ever had on the program. Time to invite previous not-out-at-the-time hosts back, wouldn’t you agree?

Oh, and it’s long past time for the openly closeted hosts to come out, too.

Here’s Joe’s list:

1976: Lily Tomlin. Not out at the time.
1976: Anthony Perkins. Died without coming out.
1976: Jodie Foster. Not out at the time.
1982: Lily Tomlin. Not out at the time.
1983: Ed Koch. STILL not out officially.
1984: Ed Koch. STILL not out officially.
1993: Rosie O’Donnell. Not out at the time.
1995: David Hyde Pierce. Not out at the time.
1996: Rosie O’Donnell. Not out at the time.
2000: Alan Cumming. Out as bisexual since 1999.
2001: Sean Hayes. STILL not out officially.
2001: Ellen DeGeneres. Out since 1996.
2002: Ian McKellen. Out since 1988.
2003: Queen Latifah. STILL not out officially.
2005: Lindsay Lohan. Not out at the time.
2006: Keven Spacey. STILL not out.
2009: Neil Patrick Harris. Out since 2006.

Lily, Rosie, David, Jodie, and Lindsay should be invited back to host; they’ve come out since hosting SNL. As NPH proved right from his monologue, the comedic possibilities are expanded when your host is out.  Everyone does better.

Entertainment Weekly raved:

All due respect to Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, but Neil Patrick Harris’ turn as Saturday Night Live host was one of the most sustained series of first-rate comic performances this venerable series has seen. Whether he was a thrusting, grinding exercise guru on a Today Show parody (and hats off to Kristen Wiig’s fantastically detailed parody of Kathie Lee Gifford’s twitchy tics) or nailing a David Frost impersonation in the Frost/Nixon skit (and congrats to Bill Hader on his David Bowie), Harris was quick, cutting, ruthless, and still charming.

Also: youngsters, especially youngsters in chaos, need to see that being out is, well, okay.  Whether you are a comedian, an actor, a mayor or a singer: being openly closeted sucks.  It’s living a lie.  And the lies hurt us all, because why would you lie about something unless you thought it was wrong?  And there’s nothing wrong with being LGBT, is there?

Mr Mayor? Sean? Miss Queen? And Kevin? Your fans are still waiting for you to do the right thing. The closet kills. Step out, please.

Gotta give ‘em hope, folks.
