My experience with Ed Koch was good. I was a boy from a small town and a very ordinary background. I was attending college, living in dorms, going to class, working out and playing intramurals.

On one of my first visits to a gay bar, I met a politician. We became friends and he took me as his eye candy for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty. The weekend was amazing. The fireworks were the best I have seen yet, and I love fireworks. Ed Koch was nice and wickedly funny.

Koch as a mayor, I don’t know.
Koch and the AIDS epidemic, I don’t know.
Koch as a great host and making a 22 year old feel at home and welcome on his first trip to NYC, and treating me as an equal with great conversation, perfect.

Yes, the politician is still a good friend.

Heh. I know “Roseann’s mother,” Estelle Parsons. When she came to a party at my house I would introduce her as “Rosanne’s mother.” Rosanne is my given name. Always caused a double take.

It’s a new category of my own invention, called “openly closeted” to include people about whom their sexuality is known but not known. In other words, everyone knows because someone has particularly good information, sometimes firsthand. But without an official coming-out, one can’t really say they are OUT.

For instance, one of the people on the not-out list has had a membership revoked at a high-end LA spa for, um, repeated misbehavior in the steam room.

Well I am unofficially in the bed. But not in or out of the closet. Does that mean the bed is in the closet? Uh oh.

sexuality swings from one end of the spectrum to the other. i believe that it is a less than rigid code and that it can shift with circumstances. Most of us are in the-say-middle 40%. I have surprised even myself at times at who I may or may not look at with that special niceness.

My kid is bi. Mostly she likes dudes but has had relationships with women and a transgendered person. She is the most amazing person. I have learned a lot about the nature of human sexuality from her because of it and the fact that she has her degree in psychology.
She, her sister and I are not girly girls. We are just peeps.

I am glad that Neil Patrick Harris is all grown up and seems very happy.

And that he is carrying a very successful sitcom, in a hetero playa role. That’s an important breakthrough, almost as important as TR Knight’s character on Grey’s Anatomy having slept with practically every female character on the programme.

There was a time not too long ago when these issues would never been discussed in an open forum such as FDL.
It’s a natural part of life and something that should be talked about openly.!

It hasn’t been that long since people were jailed for the “crime” of sodomy. In fact, I think it has been less than 10 years since a Texas case went all the way to SCOTUS.

Over the years I have worked with many LGBT’s who are not out at work, some were out in their private lives but due to being afraid of loosing their job they stayed in the closet at work. It sure made work life hard, I knew but could not discuss it with them or their social life. The most amazing employer was so open with the LGBT’s they hired and it was so nice to work at such an open environment. So much healthier too

Yes. My mother was about to lose her mind. She was sooooooooooo bored. She is very active.
She was a docent at a museum, belonged to a garden club, book club, regular bridge club and the bridge club
she had been a member of for 45 years know as “The Alcoholic Bridge Club”.

It was also a recognized mental health diagnosis once upon a time too. I did my case study on a gay young man for my Psych rotation in nursing school, he was committed by his family to “cure” him. Hard to think that the Missouri State Mental Hospital lockup was a place to cure him.

That was one of the problems with the “Call In Gay” day last month — lots of people have no protection from being fired if they are LGBT. Can you imagine being fired for being LGBT? I can’t.

It happened to a coworker of mine. Of course, our employer cited other reasons.

The Catholic Hospitals seemed to suppress LGBT employees to stay in the closet the most and amazingly health insurance companies were the most liberal. Of course at one company the VP, many of the supervisors were LGBT and guess who hired everyone……..
