How can you tell a Democrat is about to move into the White House? When Nooners writes something like this:
The Founders, who were awed by the presidency and who made it a point, the early ones, to speak in their inaugural addresses of how unworthy they felt, would be astonished and confounded by the over-awe with which we view presidents now. We treat them as if they are the Grand Imperial Czar of the Peacock Throne, and we their ‘umble servants. It’s no good, and vaguely un-American. Right now patriotism requires more than the usual candor. It requires speaking truthfully and constructively to a president who is a man, and just a man. We hire them, we fire them, they come back for photo-ops. They’re not magic.
Yep, presidents are just ordinary, regular schmoes who we hire and fire every 4 years.
Unless of course, they’re Republicans.
…that’s how I think a lot of people felt when Reagan was in the White House: Daddy’s home. A wise and brave and responsible man is running things. And that’s a good way to feel.
Nothing like having a wise, brave, responsible Daddy in the White House. A Daddy who’s like a big, huggy…
The charismatic figure Mr. [George W.] Bush follows is the last big American president, the last who had the massive presence of a battleship, Ronald Reagan.
Battleship! And the thing about wise, brave, charismatic battleships? They’re really enormous.
Reagan brought a constellation of virtues to the office of the presidency—guts, compassion, humor, a lack of pretension, a willingness to face the world and tell the truth, a willingness to make decisions and stand by them—and his leadership changed the world, and for the better. As president, he was a giant.
A giant wise charismatic brave battleship who changed the world! Let’s face it. Reagan, in a nutshell was…
Ronald Reagan was, is, a great man.
But wait a minute. Why did he have to be great? I mean, aren’t presidents just there for the "photo-ops"?
The presidency is now about two things: ridding the world of madmen who seek to terrorize, and making America safer from weapons of mass destruction. Everything else comes after that.
He [George W. Bush] has become, as everyone has pointed out, a leader. Our leader, the American president.
Wow. Ridding the world of madmen? Keeping America safe? Our Leader with an implied capital ‘L’? Sounds like that does take, well, a Great Man. . .
Noonan: Mrs. Bush, when you married George [W.] Bush, did you have the sense that maybe you were marrying a great man?
A Great Man…with Greatness!
Harry Truman was a great man. And I believe we are seeing the makings of a similar greatness in George W. Bush…
Poor Nooners.
It’s going to be an awfully long time before she can compose love letters to the next Great Giant Republican Charismatic Brave Daddy Battleship President.
In the meantime, it would be un-American for us to forget that Obama’s "just a man."

Well if it takes a Democrat in the White House for Peggy to come around….maybe we’ll get to agree “No American…not even a Republican President…is above the law.”
Consistency is for people who don’t guzzle martinis to drown what vestigial consciences they might possess.
Must have been a martini-induced ‘Ronnie-Elian-Dolphin’ hallucination.
Elian Gonzalez was just a boy.
I was thinking the same thing.
Agreed. And still with his father, thankfully.
I was referring to one of Pegster’s pieces from that period. Some rambling hallucinatory marine rescue of Elian by Raygun-directed dolphins or somesuch.
Yep, I know that one. Something about how Ronnie wouldn’t have dismissed the magic dolphins.
This charade is beyond disgusting. This woman has no talent or no meaningful insight yet is constantly given a national platform to distract and deceive the electorate. She should be fired immediately in disgrace from this one column alone talking about Shrub:

I can’t even have fun with it anymore. It’s just too upsetting. “He’s got two of ‘em??!?!?” Are you freakin kidding me?!?!? Wonder if she thinks Obama is a brave and manly as Der Chimpenfurher being melanin-enhanced and all, and with that Muslin [sic] name.
the hypocrisy of the rethuglician opinion makers knows no bounds. Of course they must all suffer from ADD/HD because none of them can remember what they said or did yesterday.
Their world view requires that they totally accept authoritarian figures as their leaders. Since they are, for the most part, authoritarian followers, they will accept whatever is presented to them by their leaders without any critical thought. Not only Rush robots, but republician automatons.
There’s something about Peggy Noonan that gives me the creeps. Maybe it’s the cadence of her speaking style, the pregnant pause before every sentence, or that as she vacantly stares off into space when speaking.
Or most likely, it’s that she’s batshit crazy even when silent.
She’s like a minor Stephen King character you encounter early in the story. You don’t know how exactly she fits in, but you just KNOW she’s an intregal part of the evil that awaits.
That’s really perceptive. She totally is like some outwardly pleasant librarian who’s slightly off, and knows where all the heads are buried in the cabbage patch.
Great post BT!
Shew was about to sing a chorus of “Barack the Magic Negro” at the close but she forgot the words. Somebody get Aunt Peggy another Martoonie.
Loonie Nooners
How can we help end this parasitic wasting disease for these poor people? Can’t we generate funds that would otherwise go to NTD’s, or Tuberculosis, perhaps AIDS? Polio? I am sure the government can arrange to find funds for them as they loot the treasury for the rest of their friends.
Perhaps they will fade away, but we must do something to help them. It has to be proactive intervention. We can hope it might be just a high colonic, but fear abounds, and it may require an expensive treatment they can find only in the third world.
for the life of me, i just do not understand the prominence of peggy noonan. her ooey-gooey writing makes me cringe.
Why thank you, TB.
I don’t have nor worship “heroes” and don’t see Obama in that role. I look to him as someone we elected to get the job done and I expect him to live up to his end of that bargain.
If I thought for one minute that Peggy Noonan, four years from now, would actually “come around” and not swoon before the manly shoulders and hair of Mitt Romney, gush nostalgically about that kindly dad-like Mike Huckabee or want to pinch the cheeks of that perky Sarah Palin, I’d feel the way you do. But she’s been at this way too long to think that.
That’s because you’re not an authoritarian cultist with a Daddy fixation.
Peggy Noonan:
Now we’re talking, Peggy. And, when the commit crimes, do we put them in jail and make them pay their debt to society? Huh? How about a little deterence going forward? Huh, Peggy dear.
Hero worship is a necessary part of the conservative paradigm. Someone’s got to be at the very top of the hierarchy.
Oh my fucking god! The level of Presidential fellatery is quite literally sickening.
And her turnaround now would give and *thinking* person intellectual whiplash severe enough to separate the head from the body!
Obama rode into the White House on the shoulders of youngsters.
Yet, the GOP continues to pledge allegiance to the Gipper; long dead, practically unheard of by the current and future electorate.
Daddy, what, exactly was 20 Mule Team Borax?
Reagan had a constellation of virtues?
The Constellation was a Frigate, a Sloop of War, and an Aircraft Carrier, but it was never a battleship.
Noonan: Mrs. Bush, when you married George [W.] Bush, did you have the sense that maybe you were marrying a great man?
Dammit. Just spit pepsi all over the old monitor.
Rats! And here I was wondering when we can start calling the rethugs “Un-American” and “Traitors” for failing to fellate PRESIDENT Obama…
When it comes to Reagan, Nooners shows all the restraint and composure of an adolescent girl at a Jonas Brothers concert.
Peg: “The presidency is now about two things: ridding the world of madmen who seek to terrorize, and making America safer from weapons of mass destruction. Everything else comes after that.
He [George W. Bush] has become, as everyone has pointed out, a leader. Our leader, the American president.”
****
Knowing now the kind of “leader” he turned out to be wouldn’t it follow from her idea of the president’s responsibility shouldn’t Bush have shot himself, after all he is a madman and was our biggest weapon of mass destruction.
Jesus Christ, is she literally insane? (And the irony of me saying that after hearing her say something that makes sense!)
Yes.
This has been another….
Well gee whiz
Nooner’s been wringin out her panties whenever she thinks of Ronnie for years—guess she just can’t dampen up any more.
For a whole host of good reasons.
Didn’t they lose?
Then why am I seeing more of her than ever?
Excellent breakdown of her (and most other wingnuts) rampant hypocrisy, especially when it comes to that ‘Master of Disaster’ Raygun.
Brilliant!
Oh, and put me down for “batshit crazy”, as well.
Lately, every time I see something like this I think of the SNL PSA skit with Gilda Radner and Candice Bergen:
http://snltranscripts.jt.org/76/76jstupidity.phtml
The Right to Extreme Stupidity League = Republicans and their media shills.
I could drink a horse.
oh no, there’s a black man in the white house and I don’t feel so safe anymores.
Poor, brittle Peg O’Day-long-gone.
Is that “great man” (sic) the same one we know as sociopathic, murderer, and liar? Yep, one and the same, I’ve heard.
Is it irresponsible to speculate that Peggy is a drunken goat-blower extraordinaire that taught Mickey Kaus everything he knows? It is
irresponsible not to.
To use an Internet cliche, this article has me ROTFLMAO! There is a category of overemoting media commentators who I’d call “exposed nerve endings.” It includes, at various times, Bill O’Reilly, Keith Olbermann, Ann Coulter, Maureen Dowd, Anderson Cooper, Jim Cramer, Joe Scarborough, and about half of the Fox News cast.
But the doyenne of them all is surely Peggy Noonan. When she goes, someone should bronze her kneepads and donate ‘em to the Smithsonian!
Apparently she needs a great big great man as big as a battleship to protect her from madmen (or was it to ride big men…whatever). But then, maybe she’s just got that disease HDTV. It’s probably just part of the job at the FOX Newspaper.
I’ve never considered Nooners to be a human being so much as a neurotic bundle of the worst kind of stereotypical affectations imaginable. Nothing about her is in the least genuine or sincere…the posing, the sighs, the hair brush-back.
As Elaine Benis would say, “Fake, fake, and fake.”
I would give Keith Olbermann a pass on that list if for no other reason than he is in a class of his own!
