I understand the critiques launched by Paul Krugman, John Conyers and others against Sanjay Gupta -- he did accuse Michael Moore of "fudging the facts" in Sicko when Moore had done no such thing. But in the end he apologized and admitted he was wrong, which is a lot more than is frequently forthcoming in these situations.
I actually think Gupta is an inspired choice. This morning in Politico they note that Daschle may use Gupta in a grassroots campaign to sell the Obama health care plan to the public. Gupta is a known and trusted public personality, and this appointment gives him the official status to explain and defend the plan on the government's behalf. His familiar face will be a powerful antidote to any kind of well-funded "Harry and Louise" style campaign aimed at tanking it.
Sam Stein says "Howard Dean, a doctor himself, noted that Gupta's responsibilities would be much the same as those in his current job: explaining medical issues of public concern in a manner that the public could understand."
I believe Gupta would perform that task really well, and do a lot to redeem public health issues from the savaging they've received from the anti-science crowd for the past 8 years. But if he does nothing more than help keep public opinion about the health care plan favorable long enough for it to pass, he'll be worth it.

Jane, your last line says it all:
But if he does nothing more than help keep public opinion about the health care plan favorable long enough for it to pass, he’ll be worth it.
A-men!
Gotta agree with you, Jane. The guy is uniquely qualified for the job.
I quite agree.
I’ll agree. I wasn’t all that familiar with him and thought he might be too much the celebrity. But considering just what his duties might be, it might be hard to find someone who could be more effective.
My first response, totally unfiltered, to the idea was:
Nobody doesn’t like Sanjay Gupta!
I totally agree with Jane.
Jane, you are great, in my humble opinion.
Gupta, however, is a sellout.
He’s like Obama.
He goes with the flow.
He’s got a great antenna.
A likable guy that can connect well with people.
Return real science to the Whitehouse!
Yea, we need a doctor like Che!
Jane Hamsher, I am SO tired of you! Seems like quite often when I make up my mind about something, you come along with a compelling argument that throws it into question. Cut it out!! *g*
Bet Dr Kirk has something to say.
I, however, am still quite fond of you Barbara.
;)
Gupta leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I think Howard Dean would have been a better choice if you ask me.
It’s a love fest at the Lake!
lol
Heh, heh.
How do you know this? Just curious.
That’s why I come here, to learn, that i don’t know shit!
A exercise in re -education!!
Jane is on target … as usual. I have followed his career closely, and although disturbed by the Moore interview, have found Gupta articulate, engaging and trustworthy. It seems to me that many of the pundits who have reservations may not realize he continues to be a practicing neurosurgeon — who even performed surgery while in Iraq on assignment for CNN.
Also, he has seen our health care system “close up” via his staff privileges in Atlanta. My goodness, given the challenges facing the BO administration, I’m just grateful Dr. Gupta would even consider accepting the nomination.
Not being aware that he apologized to Michael Moore I am more willing to see him appointed. Apologies from bobble heads is something rare and something to be noted and is commendable. Of course he should have had his fact checkers at work before he opened his accusatory mouth.
How do people make statements with such conviction when they are certain or haven’t checked? I’d like people to be more careful and certainly more accurate in the public pronouncements, like Harry did last week. He came off looking stupid, didn’t he?
Why is selling Obama’s bad healthcare plan with Gupta a good thing? If Gupta is such a smart, stand up guy, why hasn’t he been advocating a fairer, more rational, and more universal plan like single payer?
I find Gupta a condescending bore.
But he certainly is an expert on cosmetic surgery. He’s had about as much “fixed” to look like a westerner as possible.
My jury is out re: Dr. Gupta.
Has he or any MSM addressed the potential health and enviro impacts since the TVA coal ash spill?
i wonder what Moore thinks of this.
just wonderin’.
Thank you Jane.
i don’t want to support obama’s health plan - i want to support conyers’ bill.
Gupta is too right-wingy for me. He may be a Democrat, but he’s not come across that way to me since George Bush took office. Not sure why, but there’s something about the guy that just doesn’t sit right with me anymore. As Jane points out, if he can get something passed it will be great, but it still won’t change my attitude towards him.
when gupta said with a straight face that pot was more dangerous than alcohol, he lost me.
when gupta said that Michael Moore “fudged the facts” when he had his facts correct, he lost me.
that said, i am too busy marveling at how artfully feinstein was handled that i am prepared to endure gupta if that’s who obama thinks is right.
He apologized on air.
I agree with your main point Jane, that Gupta could make an excellent spokesperson for health care initiatives.
The question I still have is will he.
From all I can find, Gupta conceded error on a single (trivial sounding) point, while allowing to stand his basic assertion that Moore fudged facts (or as Krugman translates, Moore lied.)
I’d love to see a more thorough “restatement” by Gupta (translate an actual apology.)
So I guess it boils down to will Gupta be an effective voice for progressive changes, or continue as an apologist, and a voice for minor tweaks to the status quo. hard to guess.
BTW- not totally off topic: I missed the suggestion box the other day, but this is my vote for adding a Progressive Health Care Policy Blog!
I’m so pissed about the way the Obamatons are treating Howard Dean — as in ignoring him.
Not classy.
I saw a link to that- have not watched all of it yet… but going there.
I am going to have to disagree with Jane on this one. I don’t trust him, but I see why politicians like him… he has much in common with them.
Then again, I am a devoted single payer advocate.
I very strongly disagree.
Get out the shovel. Let’s bury the new administration before they even have a chance… I reserve judgment. You can’t please all of the…blah, blah, blah…
Talking about appointments, Digby has more about the announcement of Panetta as CIA director. As many of us recall, Rachel Maddow made a strong case (as a talking head on Countdown as well as on her own show) that Obama didn’t inform Feinstein & Rockefeller about the appointment ahead of time because of the lousy job they’d done with lack of oversight in the Senate Intelligence committee. But Digby turns this around and claims (along with the other main media) that the failure to inform was a major error by Obama, and that it is Feinstein who is schooling Obama, and not the other way around, on Who Must Not Be Trifled With.
So which is the better read on this? Maddow, or Digby?
Bob in HI
WTF? He’s a neurosurgeon…and what is up with the “westerner” slant? Geez.
Oh, honey, welcome to my world!
Jane, Gupta decided to tow the right wing line first, before he apologized to Moore. In other words, being on CNN he didn’t do any research or fact-checking and basically gave the impression that Michael Moore just pulled stuff from his butt, when really, it was Gupta who did that.
He may be great, Jane. We will have to wait and see, of course.
Not true. Howard Dean was praised up and down today by Tim Caine and others. Dean is traveling and won’t be there.
We, as Democrats, have done way too much lambasting of Barack Obama before he takes the oath. One large “liberal blog” (who shall go nameless) is in the process of brainwashing their readers into thinking Barack is the anti-Christ, should not be trusted, and is worse than George Bush ever was. After 8 years of George Cheney, how the hell can anyone feel this way! Jees.
His eyes have totally changed shape since he started on TV.
Gawd…Obama is much more savvy than Feinstein … He knew that she and Rockefeller forked up, and he smacked them down..even though he voted along the same lines at the time..go figure. I think he lays low and picks his battles.
good for him. that makes him a great guy on the bobble head scale. but for surgeon general i want a different scale. at least someone who won’t make me doubt whether or not we’ve left the war on science behind us. how does he do on that scale?
Sometimes it’s better just to read the posts and not make any comments!
But…you should see mine!! Heh!! Plastic surgery is just superficial and only satisfies the ego of the surgeree and who else cares what he looks like.
Progressive Health Care Policy Blog!
How about a bitch and moan about EVERYTHING blog. Oh, never mind.
It’s something to do.
That is the best comment I’ve ever read…hahahahaha
i don’t care how much cosmetic surgery he’s had. i don’t care if he has three eyes - although i suppose that might make it harder to sell any health care plan.
because everything is going so well?
I haven’t seen much of Gupta, so have no opinion about him about him one way or another. I’m curious, though, whether Obama also considered Dr. Tim Johnson, who I hold in high regard.
Hahaha….a surgeon general Dr. Tri-cycopsis would be fun! Why not?
My mother thanks you
My fadder thanks you
And I thank you.
Nothing has “got going” yet as far as I can tell…we’re still in Bushdom.
Exactly !!!!
How do you guys get the “blue” comments??? I’m out of touch…
These people got no idea who Flakey Foont is
It’s a hyperlink, click on it.
Some links:
This has youtubes of most of the exchanges:

Simpsons KO and Maddow Time to go !!
I’ll be back!
I suppose. LOL
I love the picture! Bwahahaha…
Gawd, hyperlink thingy….ummmm..I’ll have to settle for black and white!
You like that, check out Mr Natural and Flaky
LOL..I saw a documentary about the Mr. Natural cartoonist…verrry interresting man…
Is it possible Howard Dean didn’t want to participate in the meeting, because really, wouldn’t it be a little awkward to be sitting there with the new guy if you were Howard Dean? Dean probably needs to get away. Of course, I have no idea why he’s going to America Somoa, but he could very well be on vacation after all the hard work he did for us. Just a guess, but Howard Dean is a classy guy and even if he wasn’t invited (if it’s found to be true) I’m sure Dean didn’t care.
IIRC it was a pretty touchy surgery and Gupta impressed the military medical folks. Can anybody name the current SG without googling it? Or the most recent for that matter. Gupta has a leg up on the name and experience recognition so could make some positive changes happen wrt health care. If he’s a good listener we may be able to turn him into a single payer advocate, if he isn’t already.
He’s probably just having fun after his mission was accomplished..The MSM is just bored and making sh*t up to try to bide their time until more disasters unfold…or until 1/20…then they’ll shift and spend 24/7 making up more shizzola to entertain the masses.
Dr. Strangelove?
I’m sure Dean will find a nice post once he returns from vacation and Obama has taken office.
I am going to enjoy watching Gupta and other right leaning members of Obama’s team stand up and turn their backs on what they have propogated for the past 8 years.
eCAHN, when Sanjay smiles, I remember Peter Benchley’s famous novel. *g*
Dr Hackenbush, calling Dr Hackenbush!
Here’s the AP article everyone is talking about how Dean was ’snubbed’:
http://www.google.com/hostedne.....wD95J6TJ00
Written by Liz Sidoti, you know, “Ms Donut Sprinkles for John McCain” Sidoti:
http://www.jedreport.com/2008/.....who-s.html
So, with this in mind, Sidoti is just rooting for John McCain right now even though the election is over. We can expect more “anonymous insiders connected to the Obama Administration” to come I’m sure.
R Crumb, stupid sexist gross humor. I never cared for it myself. (ha)
The original Mr. Natural…
A GI sustained serious head injury and Sanjay performed a procedure to reduce swelling in his Brain.
Sadly, the soldier did not survive. Sanjay is a brilliant neuro-Surgeon.
My version of that question is “What health care plan?” The one presented during the election was at best incomplete. The other question that springs to mind is, if Gupta, who has been a proponent of the current system as near as I can tell, is willing to speak for Obama’s plan, will it be anything but more of the same?
That is soooo funny!!! HackenBUSH!
He is/was a strrrange character for sure.
BTW someone asked about Michael Moore’s reaction. Here is his site:
http://www.michaelmoore.com/
He doesn’t comment directly but links to other articles but it isn’t hard to tell where he coming down on this if you look how the links are presented.
Thanks Jane.
digg
Digby was being facetious.
I’m guessing (perhaps wrongly) that the NYT broke the story before Obama had a chance to tell DiFi, it just isn’t in character for him to intentionally snub her.
Digby is arguing that DiFi and others making power moves on Obama is nothing they did to George Bush. Which is true up to a point, but Bush actually did tell them stuff about his own illegal activities and made them complicit in them. He stroked their egos and played them perfectly.
And thus we got torture, domestic spying and telecom immunity with their eager assistance.
Whoops. Dean is going to American Somoa to attend the inauguration of the Governor there. He is Howard Dean at heart for sure! The guy loves Democrats and our party and we sure are going to miss him. ;-)
He should be Sturgeon General
First you have a sgt
then you have a Lt
then you have a corpsuckle
But what are these compared to DiFi’s fragile ego?
But Jane! PEBO PEBO! Stupid Obama! New boss same as old boss! Hair on fire!
No?
Okay, I’ll calm down. But be careful, they’ll start calling you ‘pragmatic’.
The bully pulpit will shift to the Obama Administration. Iam a very strong single payer advocate. There has to be an oppotunity for something similar to medicare for all to compete with private health insurance where the private is not allowed to dump “uninsurables” into the public system without penalty. If Sanjay got champion that I am all for him.
276 hrs & 18 min
18 min to OU v FL go Sooners
Hahahaha…!!
thanks for the links. watching now.
Whitmore: Just a minute, Mrs Upjohn. That looks like a horse pill to me.
Dr. Hackenbush: Oh, you’ve taken them before.
Mrs. Upjohn: Are you sure, Doctor, you haven’t made a mistake?
Dr. Hackenbush: You have nothing to worry about. The last patient I gave one of those to won the Kentucky Derby.
Whitmore: May I examine this, please? Do you actually give those to your patients? Isn’t it awfully large for a pill?
Dr. Hackenbush: Well, it was too small for a basketball, and I didn’t know what to do with it. Say, you’re awfully large for a pill yourself.
OMFG … Comic Gold !
Is Obama still the President???
Jane,
Thanks for the explanation. I’m glad I saw it before migrating to the new thread. The “facetious” part just sailed over my head.
Bob in HI
Ingraham on MSNBC…it’s not fair to blame Dick Cheney…Mwahahahaha
Dr. Hackenbush: Either he’s dead or my watch has stopped.
Kickoff supposed to be at 8:19 ET. Almost a half hour.
Go Gators!!
Now back to your regularly scheduled…
Ding forking Ding.
HA! now that’s funny!
So let’s blame Ingraham and see how she likes it.
Good Morning America or a similar morning show used to have Gupta on quite a lot. Gupta has been a very useful tool for Insurance companies and Big Pharma long before he lied knowingly and with forethought about Michael Moore.
IMHO, Gupta is a very poor choice. AFAIC, he joins the column with Gates, Summers and the other known Right-Wing SOB’s.
Like Groucho isn’t?
Dr. Hackenbush: Hey, don’t drink that poison! That’s $4.00 an ounce!
LS !
Didja hear Cheney (the Dick) saying that no one could have predicted
the Katrina disasterthe Iraq disasterthe economic disasterI bet I know how she likes it.
That’s the way
Uh huh uh huh

Cheney is such a Dick.

Love it! Here’s the trailer for My Little Chickaddee
Who’re you backing ?
From his son’s biography.
“You wanna know why I don’t drink water. Because fish fuck in it, that’s why.”
LMAO…feels good.
Hoping for a good game, it’s down to the love of the game. I really dislike Florida but that’s to be expected. I also expect the Gators will win by 10.
Jane, I quite agree with you, and I have not understood the attacks. He is obviously very smart, known, and articulate. What’s not to like? Esp. since he can admit when he’s been wrong….what an innovation. You got it! Thanks.
I always wished he could have hooked up with the Marx Brothers but it probably wouldn’t have worked.
Yea, Pema Chodron would encourage us to loosen up once an a while, huh Petro?
Because she’s lying dog she can that or any other crazy thing. What a complainer and caster of loopy, distorted information.
I don’t think so either. All these years later and the comedy of these guys is still wonderful.
I am no expert on football but the one time I saw Oklahoma play they were really impressive.
I bought the “You Bet Your Life” boxset and it’s amazing how well it holds up.
Oh yea, there are no slouch’s out there tonight.
Time to go warm up the teebee for da game. I’ll be leaping into my tree right after so
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Never give a sucker an even break.
That’s why they called him Honest John
I totally agree with you, Jane. This is an enlightened choice.
jane - is there a youtube you can point me to for the apology you are thinking of? because if it’s in the approximately 30 minutes of video i just watched, i want to take back my earlier comment that gupta’s a great guy on the bobble head scale - more like an ass, even for a bobble head.
I had to give the kids dinner … for me comedy/laughter is the twin of meditation …
has anyone else watched the video clips? i’d like a second opinon. i can make a quick audio from them if anyone on dial up wants to give them a listen.
i agree totally and what is with the facial contortions….giant ego methinks
he was not at ALL contrite imo…he is a jerk
thanks. i don’t mind the giant ego - it’s the dishonesty and hackitude. war on science rock on.
sanjay gupta is a running dog for big pharma.
anyone who promotes the products of big pharma[as he does], and continues to promote the prosecution, incarceration of individuals using cannabis, is a fascist bastid.
if jane hamsher continues to promote the notion that cannabis should be prohibited, that its usage should continue to be subject to criminal penalties, then jane hamsher is a fascist bastid. and we should vacate her site, recognizing what she really stands for….a fascist state. mass incarceration of anyone[s] using cannabis, anyone disputing the prevarications of big pharma and its acolytes.
will i be censored for saying this? that is my bet.
jane cannot stand truths.
One word: NO.
Tom Cruise played a doctor in “Eyes Wide Shut”, I’ve seen it 4 or 5 times, I can’t remember anything he says except when he tells someone (everyone) he’s a doctor, even showing his wallet sometimes. Tony Curtis played an impostor who played a doctor in “The Great Impostor”.
Have you (whoever you are) ever been called ‘Doctor’?
If we hadn’t had the endless deceit of the last eight years I would be inclined to agree, but Dr Gupta has a couple of big issues: he is not truthful, and he won’t admit he is wrong. His apology was both partial & fake and reveals his arrogance & truthiness. Hey, how about an honest, smart, truthful WOMAN for surgeon general. Polls show people overwhelmingly prefer female docs. It is time.
he did jane. i stand corrected. thank you for this wonderful site, by the way. :)
