Soooo, now we know why Republican Peter King was salivating over the idea of Caroline Kennedy getting appointed to the Senate. It turns out, that’s his best scenario for getting elected to the seat himself in 2010.
A new poll shows that in a head to head match up with Pete King, Caroline Kennedy is within the margin of error (46 Kennedy/44 King) but Andy Coumo trounces King (48 Coumo/29 King). Ouch!
That being said I would be curious to see how the other contenders such as Maloney, Gillibrand, Suozzi and recently Liz Holtzman match up against King. I would also be curious about who is the stimulus behind such selective polling???
You see, appointing Andy creates problems of its own for Paterson, because then there would have to be an appointment to fill Cuomo’s vacancy as NYS AG. Pursuant to NYS Public Offiers Law § 41 :
When a vacancy occurs or exists, other than by removal, in the office of comptroller or attorney-general, or a resignation of either such officer to take effect at any future day shall have been made while the legislature is in session, the two houses thereof, by joint ballot, shall appoint a person to fill such actual or prospective vacancy.
There is currently a crisis in the NYS Senate because, although the Dems recently elected a majority in that house, renegade Dem State Senators are refusing to elect a Dem Majority Leader. Apparently no one has a majority. That means that NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who has de facto control of his house will decide who the next NYS AG is. Leaving Paterson with a wild card on his currently very winning re-election ticket.
If I’m Paterson — which I’m not — I would want to keep Andy Cuomo and his lovely poll numbers on my re-election ticket. I would not count out Tom Suozzi. He lives in Pete King’s Congressional district and has large vote stronghold in Glen Cove. If he wanted to cut King off at the knees in advance of 2012, all he would have to do is campaign VERY HARD for a Dem to unseat King from the Congressional seat. A humiliation like that would dry up King’s money and support for a statewide race.
Plus, Suozzi had a good upstate organization during his primary run for Governor and has earned his upstate chops then and much more recently as Chair of the Governor’s Task Force on property taxes. Suozzi has good upstate credentials and can raise serious money outside of his own county.
Liz Holztman threw her hat into the senatorial appointment ring earlier today. I think this dilutes both Gillibrand and Maloney’s chances in terms of the gender card. Gillibrand’s district has lots of Republicans, and if she leaves the seat it will likely revert GOP. Further, she is supposed to have a 100% rating from the NRA and the bloom seems to be off the rose between her and progressives. Maloney was trying to play the gender card, but Holtzman’s got much more serious chops with feminist organizations and has had two statewide races under her belt. This is a tough break for Maloney.
So, I wonder how our hero Jerry Nadler polls against King? I know Jerry would just slaughter him in a debate, but I would love it (hint hint polling people) if somebody would do a head to head poll between Jerry and Pete.
So, to quote Gov. Paterson on Kennedy "How is she the frontrunner?"

OT: Some good news…
http://online.wsj.com/article/…..outset-box
Notice the WSJ “reporters” using the “Democrat Party” slur. Something new since Ruturd took no doubt.
Dugg right here — please join me!
Thatis good news. She seems to be the only sensisble one of the Bunch. Paulson and Bernake seem to have gone [always been?] bonkers
That’s pretty funny, seeing as how he gets to decide.
OH! We thought Bair would be sent packing because Obama’s-Bernanke/Paulson was badmouthing her. This is a good development on both counts … she stays and the badmouthing didn’t take!
Don’t know anything about NY politics but I really like Liz Holtzman from the Nixon impeachment years. Very Very smart person.
Well Chris Cillizza still thinks she’s the front runner.
Yep, me likey smart girls who talk sense.
Seems Caroline’s timing was a bit off for staters. The race is just now getting started!
The amount of wishful thinking on the parts of some people with regard to Ms Kennedy has been truly astonishing.
looseheadprop: I really like the fact that she is getting ”rewarded” (and we are too as a result) because she thought for herself and spoke out in the interests of the country, without regard to what would happen to her. I mean she we up on capital hill at the same hearing as Paulson (I think) pretty much contradicting the big boyz’ plans. So, I guess Obama likes her ideas. Go Sheila!
I remeber seeing her speak at a Dem Club when she first ran for US Senate back in 1980? was it?
You could not beat her in a game of “stump the candidate”. Her opponent, Bess Meyerson–was instead a MUCH more articulate version of Sarah Palin
ie- “It doesn’t matter that I don’t know much about that issue, because I know how to leverage star ower to form coalitions”. Yep, Meyerson reall y said stuff like that back then.
Celebrity was supposed to rump actually knowing stuff.
Made me shake my head back then, makes me shake my head now.
Bair?
Yep, to borrow a phrase from my favorite Caroline K book: Bair “spoke truth to power”.
Would there were more like Ms. bair inside the Beltway
TobyWollin @ 12: There’s a huge class of political consultants out there running around like banshees (maybe based on the Rove and Penn molds) who have no interest in policy. It’s all about communications and pr and opportunity and who is paying for their ”expertise.” It’s really an affront to thoughtful people everywhere. It’s a large part of why our politics are so empty right now imo.
big Hotlzman fan, would love to have her in the Senate
dream on Elliott…
I have long said that the single bigest problem with the Dem party is our “professional” consultents. For them it’s all about the hire, not even the win
But, but, but Maureen Dowd just came out for Caroline Kennedy.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01…..=1&hp
Yeah, I saw that. Poor Caroline.
Liz Holtzman, you have got to be really kidding
I’m not kidding. She announce today onthe radio. She’s joined the pack
well, many who worked for her in the DA’s office in Brooklyn would have the appropriate comments based upon prior published reports. Ugh!!!
After the last few weeks of this crap Ive gone over to the darkside. I’m just waiting to cast a vote for the Thugs cause whomever get’s the job I’m going to hate just on principle. People attack Caroline Kennedy because of the whole Legacy thing while Andrew Cuomo gets a free ride. Don’t make sense but you read it right up there. Andrew Cuomo Liz Holtzman Carolyn Maloney Caroline Kennedy Steve Israel(hate him just for the last name)the list is all a bunch of midgets when we need a giant. Of all of them the one I hate the most is Andy Dumbo Cuomo who’s been less than up to the job he’s got so far as I’m concerned. Maybe I was spoiled by Spitzer who seemed to like pissing off Wall St. But I am less than impressed by the fecklessness of Cuomo who has stood around while Wall St collapses and shows no sign of waking up…
