Reid’s losing (lost) all credibility as Majority leader. I would not be surprised to see him quietly eased out over the next couple months. Not over Burris neccesarily, but Obama’s probably now realized that Reid will be totally ineffectual in implementing O’s agenda.

Definite loser in this development. And she’s just taken control of the Senate Intelligence Committee. She may dig in her heels now, but Obama is clearly a person who knows how to choose his fights, and Panetta was a clear indication of where a fight will be had, if need be. Panetta has the ability to be a competent, flexible, and innovative DCI, while being utterly inflexible on torture. There is really no reason to deny his appointment.

Jane was right on Burris. He was legally appointed, whatever we may think about Blagoyevich. Reid really dropped the ball on this one. All he had to do was wait,and say something like, let the law or procedure take its normal course.

Let’s consider, though, why Reid fumbled. It is because the Senate Dems, like the House are still caught up in the PR world the rethugs created as a stand-in for our politics. Everything is perception; nothing real counts unless it counts as perception. Obama’s election has changed the game, as Sen Feinstein discovered to her chagrin yesterday, and Reid discovered this morning. It’s not just spine here, it is the way our representatives perceive politics. They are playing to the Tweeties, not the American public. But the publivc are now watching because they are losing their homes and their jobs. It’s not entertainment anymore.

Damned good question. I just went through the 111th members and find that the people I really like for the job – Whitehouse, Webb, and maybe Brown – are all too junior to get the post.

Some of the old bulls are probably better suited in chairmen positions – Levin & Leahy.

I like Dodd very much but he may be better left as a chairman.

Burris doesn’t deserve to be credentialed. He IS tainted – as tainted as the governor (soon to be impeached) that appointed him. He should NOT be seated and the MN senate should choose or a special election held.

Minnesota election law, and it’s good law – maybe best in the country, is straight forward and explicit about givin’ 1 week for court challenges to be pressed and then for the Governor to hold off signin off until the court challenge is settled…some have advanced the theory that Palwenty could appoint an “interim” but I don’t think that would wash with the votin’ public in Minnesota…let’s let the law play out in Minnesota, it should jest be another couple a weeks.

The perception game started with the last democratic administration, the bs about the vast right wing conspiracy, the partnership with the likes of Redstone and Murdoch, etc. Burris is a detail and if you are a progressive you look for bottom line improvement and change. It seems if you are a Clinton “liberal” you focus on almost irrelevant details and make them a global distraction and cover for whatever nonsense.

I like Burris’ attitude. He’s correct, knows his appointment is within the law and legal, and knows he’ll be seated. George Bush on the other hand was always wrong, a hateful warmonger, a liar, and thought of the US Constitution as a ‘goddamn piece of paper’.

Dodd or Feingold. Either one would be miles better than what we have now. As I stated above, Blago said he had a gold mine when it came to filling Barack’s seat, but the conversation didn’t go further than that, meaning, there was no money exchanged and there wasn’t a secret meeting place named for the conspirators to meet and them being caught in the act of sealing the deal. As an American I can freely say that I would love to drag George Bush down the stairs of the White House by his feet so his head bangs on each step, but unless I actually get in my car and point my car towards DC and am recorded on the phone saying that I am on my way to do it, well, there isn’t much one can do.
