Well, well, well.  It seems that Obama is talking about "entitlement reform" and the Blue Dogs like what they’re hearing:

Here’s President-elect Barack Obama, this morning:

We are working currently on our budget plans… starting to consult with members of congress on that… Discussion around entitlements will be a central part of those plans… by Feb [with my 10-page budget preview] we will have some very specific plans to release [on reforming entitlement spending].

Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) liked what he heard:

"I have talked with President-elect Obama several times about the severity of our entitlement crisis, and I have urged him to conduct a full audit of his predecessor’s books. He understands the tremendous fiscal challenges we face. I appreciate his forthrightness on the subject this morning, and I pledge to work with him and his economic team to get this situation under control."

Entitlement reform is usually code for one of reducing benefits, increasing withholding taxes, or making people wait longer for social security (what, you thought you were retiring at 65?  You’re going to work till you drop.)

If the Blue Dogs like what they’re hearing it’s highly unlikely that entitlement "reform" is going to be anything that ordinary people like.

On Sunday I wrote an article evaluating my economic predictions last year.  I marked the following one wrong.  I think my scorecard may be looking better than I’d like, soon enough:

20) A huge push to gut entitlements in 2009, no matter who is president. Even if the US quickly pulls out of Iraq, the deficit will be totally out of control, and hundreds of billions will be needed for bailouts. A rapid consensus will form that rather than increasing taxes significantly on the rich, or slashing expenses like the military R&D and equipment appropriations budget, that the real problem is people retiring at 65, poor people getting Medicaid and old folks who aren’t destitute receiving Medicare.

  •  I think I got this one wrong, given the consensus forming for a large stimulus (assuming the Republicans don’t kill it.)  We’ll see, but I’ve tentative marked it wrong.

Looks like I jumped the gun.  It’s going to be a long, long year.
