Every year various lists of "the best companies in America" to work for come out. Hard to believe how often Hooters restaurants do not make the cut.
Yes, hard to believe indeed:
A waitress was barred from working at the Hooters restaurant in Davenport after a violent physical attack left her bruised and unable to meet company standards for maintaining a "glamorous appearance."
The waitress alleges she was fired after taking time off to recover from the assault. Hooters officials say the waitress abandoned her job, but also say that the woman’s bruised body made her temporarily ineligible to work as a "Hooters Girl."…
Cue up Lee Greenwood singing "Proud to be an American".

Have you ever heard the joke about how to make a small fortune investing in the airline industry?
Start with a large one.
Employee handbook requirements
The inside of a Hooters Restaurant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Smoking Gun website obtained a copy of the Hooters Employee Handbook[10] which notes that:
Customers can go to many places for wings and beer, but it is our Hooters Girls who make our concept unique. Hooters offers its customers the look of the “All American Cheerleader, Surfer, Girl Next Door.”
Female employees are required to sign that they “acknowledge and affirm” the following:
1. My job duties require I wear the designated Hooters Girl uniform.
2. My job duties require that I interact with and entertain the customers.
3. The Hooters concept is based on female sex appeal and the work environment is one in which joking and sexual innuendo based on female sex appeal is commonplace.
4. I do not find my job duties, uniform requirements, or work environment to be offensive, intimidating, hostile, or unwelcome.
[edit]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooters
My bold I assume that this is an attempt to protect themselves from a lawsuit about creating a workplace that thrives on sex appeal and therefore creates lots of potential sexual harassment lawsuits.
I’ve been there 3 times the food is ok but over priced the girls are good looking the environment seems safe.
But the employee handbook sounds sleazy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooters
Men booze Girls in tight T-shirts and short skirts sorry there will be days a girl won’t be able to sign that without lying.
What happens if she won’t sigh?
Sorry
What happens if she won’t sigh?
should be
What happens if she won’t sign?
What happens if she won’t sigh?
Sure sign that she’s married?
She won’t sigh? Married or not that might violate the rule listed above/s
Replace female sex appeal with humiliating racial stereotypes. Sure they both exist in society and its hard to avoid making them.
But having a workplace designed to make money off of them? Why not just call it a strip club? The girls would get paid better.
Calling this place family friendly if you have a daughter, or a date does not work. I try to avoid staring at other women on a date going to a place that invites staring seems to be a good way to get in trouble.
Mornin’, TCU.
What are you doing up so late?
Why am I up so early?
Why are we here?
I hate it when I wake up feeling all existential.
heh.
http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource…..139501.asp
I assume that if your daughter works at Hooters you get a D?
I try to avoid staring at other women on a date going to a place that invites staring seems to be a good way to get in trouble.
I’m thinking that if you’re on a date with a woman who doesn’t mind your staring at Hooters’ girls, she’s is only after you for your money.
Can’t sleep
Now I have to go to Hooters to check out the women customers with dates cause I’m sure your right. Too bad the only one I know is back in Illinois.
Been there.
Do I get extra points for somehow just knowing, before I even clicked your link, that that line *had* to be from Chris Rock?
It is up to each of us to find meaning or not to find meaning in why we are here success, failure, or apathy don’t matter. Trying or not trying as the case maybe is our choice, I try to have fun even if I am failing or just plain don’t care.
Although having purpose and fun is in my opinion the best.
Yes extra Bonus Points!
Yep: why are we up? But to add to the top 10 list, and inquire, did anyone see Aaron Brown’s special on torture last night…called Torturing America. A very compelling film and 3 commentators…how totally complicit Bush et al in knowing, allowing authorizing. No one can say we don’t know. The investigation was incredibly thorough…interviews with some former detainees and many, many lawyers. PSB: Im sure there is something on the web.
Extra Extra bonus points for Good News to start off the morning:)
wow – that’s good.
And here I was, thought not sure, thinking that the meaning of life *had* to have something to do with blueberry pancakes….
Nope wish I did. Wish the MSM hacks would ask White House Spokesperson Dana what the White House thinks about it.
When she says she or Bush hasn’t seen it the press should reply the White House spy’s on peace groups we know this you are lying.
If you must lie try telling one the American people might believe.
BlueBerry pancakes are fun:)
mornin’ Rev.
sorry I missed that.
G’morning early birds and insomniacs!!
I don’t believe it,a classy joint like Hooters would never treat their employees like that………yeah right !!!!
Part of what was so striking was seeing Bush lie over and over. Knowing the history…seeing him say America does not torture, all the lies in context/the rear view mirror are so appalling…he doesn’t blink. And some of the players who tried to call a halt: Mora, the lawyer, Armitage, folks who knew we were ’round the bend. I was thinking this am about a letter to Laura; she should stop defending him.
Im sure there will be a re-run. If the reporters can put this much together…certainly the legal system can. There were calls for accountability/statements about the harm we have done to ourselves in the world for the next many years.
She must know what kind of guy he is or is she in deep, deep denial? If she does know well birds of a feather flock together maybe she is like him?
Running over her ex boyfriend maybe was not an accident? I mean what are the odds?
maybe Laura’s book deal is for setting herself up with a little nest-egg to tide her over until the divorce she files on Jan. 21 is finalized?
by the way, is there anything in The Book about the meaning of life and blueberry pancakes?
Some people here may want to get a room!
I want programs like this on Prime time the big channels.
mornin’ bb….
Yes, and well publicized. I had not even seen ads for this one coming up on PBS…usually they do previews. The commentators were a writer from Fla who has been following the detainee stories, Alan Dersho….(I can’t spell) and Phillippe…from Britain who has written on torture. I thought extremely well done.
Ok we’ll tone it down but its Attaturk’s fault he chose this topic/s
Will be so interesting….she had really liked living in Austin. I saw a grocery store headline about her getting tricked out of an earlier 12 Mill. divorce agreement. Who knows? She’s earned it, if she really knows what has been going on and stayed to support him.
Phillipe Sands?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillipe_Sands
Alan Dersho
Can’t spell either its to early in the morning, the guy who wrote Bush vs Gore the book explaining the case?
I love the part where he explains how weird it is for the Supreme Court to make a ruling and then say that the ruling can Never be used as a Precedent.
Laura Bush got tricked out of a 12 million dollar divorce agreement?
Still nothing on w/n the meaning of life has something to do with blueberry pancakes?
I bet it’s in the fine print….
Laura Bush got tricked out of a 12 million dollar divorce agreement?
I think that was the wife of another of GHW Bush’s fine sons….
Today is lunch for O and W and all the ex Pres…Maybe they can talk about torture
Love is in the air.
Depends what you think about Grocery store headlines…It was Laura…the other is really old news of how she has be completely “cut off”
What ever you do or don’t do try to have fun doing it try to have Blueberry pancakes when ever you can:)
(I think we should write commercials for Ihop)
Today is lunch for O and W and all the ex Pres…Maybe they can talk about torture
“All in favor – raise your hands…”
“Umm, Senator Obama?….”
Yes..that one. Did you not spell just to make me feel better?;) Thanks.
OT I googled Laura Bush 12 million dollar divorce agreement and found this
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..42950.html
Regency won’t publish Bush’s but they are all about hyping Rightwing books noone reads and they won’t take Bush’s calls?
Bwahahaha!
We need a front pager to post on this:) I give myself extra extra bonus points for good news to start the morning.
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo and Friedman today. MoDo has a crush. She’s “Sweet on Caroline.” She says Caroline Kennedy is smart, cultivated, serious and unpretentious. The Senate, shamefully sparse on profiles in courage during Dick Cheney’s reign of terror, would be lucky to get her. Pesky little details like not supporting local Democratic candidates and not even bothering to stir her stumps to get to the polls and vote don’t seem to bother MoDo… The Moustache of Wisdom addresses “The Mideast’s Ground Zero,” and says Barack Obama’s goal has to be a settlement in Gaza that eliminates the threat of Hamas rockets and opens Gaza economically to the world, under credible international supervision.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got apple walnut muffins that just came out of the oven. We’re looking at rain today, and the wind is starting to really blow. I wonder what is going to be discussed at the luncheon with all the living Presidents and the President-Elect? Oh, to be a fly on the wall… Have a great day.
Number One son just made it back to base on Jan 2. Thought he had a 24-hour bug. Sergeant took one look and sent him to the hospital. He spent four days in there – couldn’t even keep water down.
Same as happened to me last winter.
So they pumped some bags into him, kept him on an IV with anti-nausea and pain meds, ran a scope down him to look around. He still couldn’t keep anything down.
Finally they released him same diagnosis as mine from last year – “We have no idea what the hell is going on here”….
This is a very weird post topic to say that you met somebody on.
…………….Still nothing on w/n the meaning of life has something to do with blueberry pancakes?………….
only when smothered in pure Vermont Maple Syrup !
I was sick like that last fall( 2007) I thought I had been poisoned !!!
Please tell who wants to hear anything else he has to say—as he fills the ol’ coffers? He speaks like a 3rd grader trying to sound out the words; this idiot has had all the levers of power. How dangerous is that?
I really have had periods of the experience of depression when one knows our country has been without our values, honesty, peaceable…all those things many other countries have suffered. I hope he gets all the ignomny he has earned. How I hope
Nobody else got sick in his unit?
I think that is Marion’s expertise.
Hope he is really better; hope he could enjoy the time out. Probably not.
I’m workin on it. Everyone at the Lake is, still he does talk like a third grader. I bet he lies and takes credit for writing the book himself.
Or maybe even the conservative ghost writers don’t want their name on that book!
Morning all, Warming here today, was thinking about Obamas having to spend ten days in a hotel because John Howard needs the place overnight on the 13 of Jan. I think that on Jan 20 Obama ought to give bush a ticket on Southwest Airlines rather than let him use AF 1.
313 hrs & 2 min
Poisoning?!!!!!!!!
Yep, no first class of assigned seat. Good idea.
KBR Rachel did a piece yesterday that stuff Erin Bro (I can’t spell ) found in that movie.
I once asked the airline industry analyst at my firm why any institutional investor would ever buy an airline stock. He gave me this funny look, and then admitted: they think they can time the cycle.
Noooo, blueberries, pancakes, and syrup. She knows her stuff.
Think my reaction would be, “If *that’s* your so-called diagnosis, why should I pay the $20,000. you just charged for all the tests you ran.”
No – he left Indianapolis already sick. I’m surprised he made it all the way to Alabama.
Got out of the hospital just in time to find out that his unit was heading out for a week in the field that night.
So he reported to go on out – Sergeant told him to forget it and lay low for the week.
Same thing as happened to me.
But his bills are covered by the Army…
Ah another joke! Doesn’t Warren Buffet think market timing is a bad idea thats why he buys and holds?
Well thats good news.
Good morning everyone! If it’s a tough job market for the Hooter girls, then we know it’s a tough job market.
Well, if this woman needs a job, there’s a new topless donut shop opening up in Vassalboro, Maine:
http://www.google.com/hostedne…..QD95H77V80
So, where do they put the donuts? Im trying to believe you are kidding. Good Morning.
topless coffee shop? Coffee is redundant – I’d be awake pretty quick.
And I may need driving directions…
I know ,I was actually hoping she’d invite me over for breakfast, though it is a bit of a ride.
So, where do they put the donuts?
I smell a contest coming up….
Different symptoms but similar thing happened to me this past spring…..oh, they found something not right but it had absolutely nothing to do with the initial symptoms…which magically disappeared by themselves some six weeks later. So I get left not knowing what caused the sick originally PLUS now having something else to worry about that has to be tracked with expensive tests for the foreseeable future. :-(
You’ve already won, hon….;)
Hooters is all heart. I’m so glad that Sara was able to get the unemployment benefits.
the trick is in finding very thin donuts.
Ann Coulter is making an ass of herself on the Today Show. What a surprise. Matt’s doing a good job.
I hope she has some other help: Sara needs a new job and a new place to live. Let’s identify that “assailant”.
Don’t mean to step on Elliott’s toes but the 7:30 slot goes to the “good” while the 8:00 slot goes to the “nasty”….who, unfortunately comes from my state. :-(((

Thanks for the warning. I thought they had had the good sense to cancel her. Maybe Matt saw Harry go after her; maybe she will decide to stay off TV.
*waving to Waccamaw*
I didn’t see that you put it up, sorry.
Yay Maxine!
That woman is a walking and unfortunately talking tabloid.
312 hrs & 37 min
LOL Good question. Maybe they hang them on their thong strings?
Well, I suppose in Vassalboro one needs a swift wakeup, because really, what is there to do in Vassalboro to keep the mind awake? I can’t think of a thing. LOL
Matt starts off by discussing her allegations about being banned from the network. He then goes on to discuss her credibility. She started whining about wanting to discuss her book. She continued to whine about wanting time to complete a sentence. I’m sure that Think Progress will have a tape.
I saw the end where she said Bush has kept us safe for the last 8 yrs. Talk about rewriting history. When was 9/11/2001 again? In 1999?
Matt brought up the CBS interview.
Ann Coulter is making an ass of herself…
Isn’t that a tautology?
A poor imitation of yours but hope to see the ‘puter guru next week and one of the questions on my list is why I can’t get into that radio list that’s so much more comprehensive.
What happened
This was the first time that I actually sat through a Coulter interview. Now I need to go take a shower.
Ann Coulter-Ass =oxymoron
How does Bush letting Ossama live by taking the troops chasing him and telling them to invade Iraq instead keep us safe?
Bush does not deserve credit!
caller on WSJ says Senate “smells like an old-folks home”.
heh.
Matt actually cut off Ann’s balls. She’s not a good whiner.
I just may have to risk my breakfast and watch it.
Dead or alive….Right? Like all his other lies.
Freezing rain here, watching neighbor scrape 1/4 inch of ice from car windshield.
Gonna be my turn real soon….. shit , I hate this weather!
Where are you? I hate the cold also.
yeah, it’s hideous out there
Massachusetts Rev !
Where are you, Elliott?
I guess I’m gonna earn a few enemies here right now but I am having trouble figuring out what the outrage is here
if I enter my car in a car show and they want cars without dents my car doesn’t get in, simple stuff
the sex oriented industry is not something I am against, I don’t give a turd if there are straight bars, gay bars, bars marketed with women for men, women for women, men for women or men for men
I really don’t understand the outrage unless there are those here who think marketing for our sexual desires and fantasies need to be outlawed, I am not among that group of people
I would of course not mind if there were laws saying establishments like hooters have to provide a differant position for healthy people who became unmarketable due to a crime but really, wanting hooters to continue marketing staff in postions that will turn business away is rediculous
by the way, I never understood the hooters success, the outfits are far from sexy as far as I am concerned, the food is really bad and not inexpensive so I just don’t get it
but I do get their position and if most of you think I’m batty for my position I think the same about many of those expressed here on this thread
SE PA
NPR/Morning Edition reflecting on Bush legacy. War divided the country, drove his “numbers” down. Clearly did not plan the aftermath; can’t be changed. Bad name re. torture, etc. leaves bad name for America; Bush thinks he has made us safer. Did little to reduce economic crisis but somewhat well managed after it hit. Credit for being “decisive”…for good or bad. Has been consequential…Dalek says he will be “forgotten”; W to continue to make his case for himself. Gag.
Swim’s up
I worked in a few bars when I was younger and we had male dance revue
it would be obsurd if bruised or unattractive men were hired or men who didn’t want to wear what they were hired to wear and I see absolutely no differance with this hooters policy
now, hooters has managed to game the system by calling itself a restaurant and that needs to be addressed, if they are a restaurant they are subject to all the rules other restaurants are subject regardless of their marketing concept, they are subject to those rules in addition to rules governing cabaret establshiments and I beleive they should not be relieved of any rules or regulations regarding either
so if that’s the issue, that restaurants have differant work rules then cabaret or entertainment business then I understand and agree
The “issue” is less their policy (as offensive as it is) than this:
– A woman is assaulted and bruised, they won’t let her work, then they claim she abandoned her job so as to not have to pay her unemployment insurance — a right she has.
It’s bad enough they are sexist as hell, it’s outrageous they try to profit from it both coming and going at the victim’s expense.
Nobody forces these women to work in these places.
And these women know they are there to be looked at.
I wouldn’t go to Hooters ……to each his own
From what I can gather from the story, Hooters was trying to claim “workplace misconduct” for denying Sara’s claim for unemployment. What a bunch of creeps.
As for your analogy, women with bruises are not on the same level as cars with dents.
And I have a lot to say on the sex industry and women as objects…but that will start a war on this thread.
By the responses I’ve seen here…a glaring lack of compassion and concern for this woman, who was beaten.
TV pictures look serious, very cold. Sorry. I am going to try to watch Matt/Ann…not sure I can.
Yeah, Sara could use some folk on her side.
I think Matt is a jerk so I was not expecting him to question her remarks. Watch with low expectations and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Time to join the teeming masses!
I hope you all have a great day ,goodby and good luck!!
ok, their not in the same catagory and I agree, instead I’ll use the analogy “it will drive customers away”
as far as women as sex objects, sorry this doesn’t fly with me, men are sex objects for women, men are sex objects for men, women for women and women for men, exploiting this natural desire is the same thing as exploiting any other saleable product and I have no trouble with it
in fact I know women (and men) who are empowered by the industry and exploit the industry far more then the industry exploits them
but that’s another thread and discussion as you point out
as for my compassion for this women, of course I have compassion for the women, as I said I think there should be rules in place to insure she still has gainful employment with hooters that does not involve a position that might turn customers away so I agree with you there of course
later bb
be careful out there
Actually I can’t take it all….Thanks
I beg to differ with you–sex is not a “product”.
Just goes to show how warped our view of sex has become.
