Being determined to be bipartisan about some things is bad enough — being determined to be bipartisan about other things is simply immoral.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Diane Fienstein and Jay Rockefeller:
NBC News has learned that Senate Democrats — including Dianne Feinstein and Jay Rockefeller, who are the incoming and outgoing Intelligence chairmen — have privately recommended a career CIA officer to head the agency.
Democratic sources indicate that both have recommended deputy CIA Director Steve Kappes, a veteran CIA intelligence officer
Kappes has had some successes no doubt, but on the issue of torture, he apparently did nothing.
One potential downside for Kappes: Like former counter-terror chief John Brennan, some critics says he had line authority over controversial decisions involving interrogation and detention.
Epic-moral-fail.
Leon Panetta may not have been working on intelligence case reports, but on this issue he’s sterling. And if there is to be a CIA head, then let it be one that will let the professionals do their job, while putting a line in the sand they will NOT cross. Feinstein had no problem voting for pro-torture Attorney General Mike Mukaskey and pro-torture CIA head Porter Goss and both have by and large bought Bush’s bullshit for 8 years running, but heaven forbid someone who will not run the CIA like a "24" episode be appointed.

Well, shucks! She can hardly approve of someone who might not shield the senior committee members from the consequences of their part in enabling the torture and its continuance…
I love it when a plan comes together…..may not have been Obama’s intent but his pick of Penetta could have some welcome outcomes in the future; difi and jello have good reason to be quaking.
Send disposable diapers to the White House war criminals. Send lots; have a feeling the need for them is increasing daily.

David Rockefeller’s Council on Foreign Relations is the Master pulling the strings. 9/11 was the required pretext to implement the plan. Israel and America are his pet projects. The Federal Reserve Bank is his control mechanism. As the world’s banker, War is simply too profitable to allow a peaceful world to exist.
When you take note of the CFR’s role in events, and view the roster of its members, and the influence they wield, it becomes clear that the CFR is the “Tower Of Power” – the actual Control Center for ALL policy.

Photos from the CFR 1991 annual report near the end of the first Bush administration portray a snapshot of the Council near the end of the first Bush administration. David Rockefeller’s picture is prominent throughout the report. Photographs include Cheney in Paris, October 1990; the President of Mexico and David Rockefeller, and Cyrus Vance with the Security General of the U.N. and David Rockefeller. Great title! Reminds of that classic Simon and Garfunkel hit “Like a Board Over Troubled Water.”
Man, this whole deal is interesting. Never thought I’d be on Panetta’s side about anything, but here we are. I’m thinking DiFi and Jello Jay feel this Obama character is getting kinda uppity. Odd that they’d be making so much noise against a DemocratIC Prez who hasn’t even started yet. Hmmmm….
As soon as the lengthy and well research comment I posted just prior to yours is cleared for viewing, you’ll see the AGENDA being played out. They don’t want Obama moving outside of the control mechanisms already in place.
They probably learned it here.
Good God! U.S. troops are now permanently stationed in Israel and aiding in Israel’s siege of Gaza:

I posted this on the LLN thread, but it is on topic here.

i’ll take leon. difi is an empty skirt for us here in ca. can’t wait to oust her along with short ride.
Rockefeller, Harman, and DiFi: SHUT UP..
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Herbert today. Bobo’s stopped being a crystal ball gazer and put on his psychologist hat. (He’s so multi-talented…) In “The Confidence War” he actually opines that this isn’t a war of attrition between Israelis and Palestinians. It’s a series of psychological exchanges designed to shift the balance of morale. If you look up “horse’s ass” in the dictionary you may see his picture… Mr. Herbert discusses “The Afghan Quagmire,” and says the time to go all out in Afghanistan was in the immediate aftermath of the 2001 terror attacks. That time has passed.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a selection of bagels with cream cheese today. Some of the cream cheese has chives that have started to poke their heads up already. I don’t know why we keep worrying about how the Republicans will try to obstruct an Obama administration — the fracking Democrats are doing a splendid job, thank you very much…. Have a great day.
Tony Blair was just on CNN babbling that a cease fire might be possible if the tunnels are blocked. No mention of the fact that US troops are there on the Egyptian border making sure of just that.
Karl Penhaul has a video at CNN. Israel was keeping the media 15 miles back of the border. He was refused permission to go closer, so he hired a cab and got there via back roads. Karl is standing at the border wall as his video ends as he mentions now he needs someone to get him into Gaza. If anyone is going to make it over the wall, it is going to be Karl. The video is called Back Story: Rafah Border.
Hind sight is easier when your head is up your ass.
Diane says she is not happy about Panetta…don’t know is she explained.
I wonder how much of her displeasure is due to a snit because she apparently wasn’t consulted…
What is it called “smuggling” when obtain supplies? And who the fuck are we to say that don’t deserve them?
By participating in the siege of Gaza, the U.S. is perpetrating a crime against humanity. This is a fucking outrage.
how about stfu?
Oops! That was supposed to read: “Why is it called smuggling when Palestinians obtain supplies that displease the Israelis?” What gives them the right to say?
Oh NO!, Not a stentorian Senatorial Snit. ;-)
Well, there is that…. but probably much more due to her deep briefings on bush’s torture policies. Not gonna happen but it sure would be nice if Obama told her where to stick her worthless opinion of Panetta.
I’ll say it again:
With Term Limits you wouldn’t be talking about Jello or DiFi.
Upside to Term Limits has many more advantages than the down side. Think it through.
i suspect more than a little. she wants ta be a player in intel. i don’t think bama wants ta play. wigwam has it right above, imo.
Morning all, Was just sitting here doin some reading listening to Morning Joe before WJ comes on when an add came on supporting Israel. It was just one of those early morning holy shit moments. Bunch of old women hugging each other crying about all those missles aimed at them. Sally Struthers was missing though.

i’m thinkin. mebe it’s a way forward. we certainly are stuck in a rut.
Two weeks from today…did we think it would ever come? Feels like “counting my chickens…” but I really am breathing easier. Since I work with a couple of 20%ers, I have to not gloat.
using morality to site the failure is not quite good enough, it plays right into the hands of people who believe the rubbish that torture might be an asset in inteligence gathering
their morality is, “if it saves the country you have to do it”
the only way to discuss torture to these morons is like so;
“epic national security fail:
there, you get less information from torture not more, you create more enemies, you promote the insurgency, you become the bad guy
for every bit of information you might have gathered you lost ten, for every situation you might have prevented you cause 100
for instance, you torture my son, my brother my son and you bet your ass you have created legions of enemies you did not have and each and every one of us will terrorise you, your cause, your people
so “Epic-moral-fail” is a counter productive method in framinig the debate, it falls right into their hands
Not to mention that they just tell you shit to get you to stop and you can’t tell what is true and what is BS

make sense to me but the people to convince are terrified of the islamic hoard. it’s the religious thing again that overlays reason.
Wow. First caller on WJ, a D, got DiFi down to the fine points. Thinks Panetta is a great choice & DiFi is pimping (my word) for her husband, a war profiteer.
Oh! Lookie! SanderO is flogging his dead horse again, hardly has a hide left from all the flogging.
What part of the concept of limited term of office is Sander incapable of conceptualizing, the actuality, the reality, the essence of term limits stares the beholder in the face and he still does not see. How many reams of “NO SanderO” will it take, but then there always a slow learner in every group. /s also end of discussion.
I can’t believe it. We’ve just entered another war. We have troops in Israel and Egypt participating in the Siege of Gaza, which is a crime against humanity. And we’ve joined in.
When was the last time that Gaza posed a threat to us? This is fucking insane.

How about STFU and off to the Hague where all war criminals belong? They knew about the torture and stayed silent. There never was any hope of an impeachment of Bush/Cheney; Democrats were complicit.
Can we send them all to the new $700m embassy in Iraq and let the Iraqis take care of them? They can experience all of the torture techniques that were authorized. It is legal ’cause John Yoo said so and they did nothing about it. The list of inhumane and illegal treatment of prisoners in the official report is beyond disgusting and so are they.

latest from israel is that they are after the final solution for gaza. i wonder if that rings a bell?
Wish we had the ability select committee chairs that were qualified for the job.

There is the “doctrine of command responsibility” under which we hanged General Yamashita after WWII not for ordering war crimes but for failing to stop them when he had the authority to do so.
ya know, i almost go there. but then i’m thinkin these people (for lack of a beter word) actually mean well. just like the shrub. they are just disconnected somehow with reality. don’t know how ta fix it.
i like that one. mebe there is some hope for complicity at least.
Biden to be sworn into “his” senate seat today and will resign just before being sworn in as VP – Going to Iraq. Hmmmm

joe may be an asshole but he is OUR asshole now. he don’t take no shit and knows that place like the back of his hand. we are gettin out.
The founders gave us one and only one remedy for serious presidential misbehavior, impeachment. And Nancy Pelosi unilaterally suspended that portion of the Constitution, blocking any constitutional recourse. She knew there was an on-going program of war crimes and, so far as I’m concerned, she is just as responsible as Bush himself.
The just following orders defence didn’t work out for war criminals at the Neurenburg Trials.
Of course she is..
I really have to wonder whether Panetta’s nomination will even make it out of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Rockefeller, Feinstein, Whitehouse, and Mikulski (and almost certainly others) are up to their necks in complicity in torture “wink and nodding” at the very least. Should make for an interesting Senate Committee approval session, if it gets that far.

Mornin’, pups
The good Rev Wright is in the news again.
don’t share that opinion. my take is that she is a practical woman. there have been no indictable offenses that have come to light. yet. that’s all there is. if there was somethin concrete he would be gone already.

Slow news day in Tampa. I can’t imagine an article like that in the NYT or the WP. I guess this emphasizes the very real cultural differences between North and South.
their terification of “Islamicis the very reason you cannot use “moral highground” as your reason for disallowing torture
anyone heard from Katymine?
The US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence members in 2002; they all knew about the torture. I tried to copy and paste to here, but it becomes a confusing single column of names.
http://intelligence.senate.gov…..gress.html
Did whoever really use the term “final solution?”
Per Richard Cohen:
Seems to me it started when population A decided to build its national home where population B lived.
did you watch the hearing yesterday?
I appreciated him speaking up for the pensioners as opposed to Ackerman’s billionaires.
it doesnt matter, what words my friend, the actions always speak louder
i hate ta say it but it may also be a personal preference type of thing with her. she is much more comfortable with her old friends. new things are a bit challenging for her. it is time for her ta move on.
The Tampa Trib is totally neocon and the St Pete Times political editor is one. When the Wright controversy first hit the news Adam Smith of the Times was in 7th heaven. Both rags suck.
I’m not sure. I’m absolutely convinced that these SIC folks are complicit in the torture approval process and have a lot to lose if it comes to light. OTOH, I’m equally unconvinced that Panetta would bring any of it to light anyway.

OT — I turned on my TV just a bit ago as I was getting my kids ready to board the school bus and to my horror, the CBS Morning Show had Ann Coulter on to promote her latest tome of hate.
I immediately went online to contact them and voice my displeasure:
I would encourage anyone else to go to http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/…..form.shtml and give them a little heck for putting that evil, hatemonger on the air.
In this case I disagree. Those words will forever live in infamy. For someone to use them in relation to Gaza is quite telling and indefensible. The actions of the Israelis are bad enough but to define them in this manner is beyond the pale.
yup,her prime has long since passed along with any morality she once possessed
i think it was olmert. not final solution but real close to it. a cease fire would have ta be permanent (final). sent chills down my back.
yeah, I think so
btw he’s getting a biscuit from Bush
Damn, even NBC cancelled her appearance on the Today Show.
yea,but yesyerday, she was supposed to find out if the meds ar working, all digits crossed
tru dat, nobody could be that stoopit,to ever utter those words again, could they?

I knew what she was referring to. Saw it yesterday. I’ve got a better place for it rather than draped around his neck though.
Something about the decision from the MN recount not being the official certification…not the Cornyn idiocy.
This has probably been said before but I haven’t seen it…imho, the whole Gaza fight is another attempt by Bush to complicate/destroy/hamstring the Obama administration. BushCo is working overtime to limit the success of Obama’s policies. Before O could possibly work out any peace agreement between Israel and Palestine, Bush made sure that task would be all the more difficult.
There should be a post of all that Bush has done to guarantee failure or O’s tenure. We can start with spending/printing all that stimulus money.
yes,gaw,i hope all is well
thanks Bilbo
Thanks for the warning…that’s the one I usually check. Scary;)
Somewhere well hidden, perhaps?
When I Googled “final solution” and Gaza, I got ten pages of hits.
I heard yesterday that Lightbrained Harry Reid called the MN SoS and told him not to sign the certification and the Sos obediently said OK.
has he joined the Carlyle Grp yet, they laud their own

The US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence members in 2002; they all knew about the what some critics describe as torture.
Fixed, per NPR, which has jumped on the Politically Correct Description of Waterboarding Express.
PEBO didn’t need any help with that one. Hillary and her mid-east team are straight out of the Saban Center.
That’s what I was thinking.
I will be very surprised if he does not award one of those to himself although, frankly, I could think of something a lot better to hang around his neck.
yup, weighing him down with lead chain, gaw, evil bastards
CIA should benefit from periodic infusions of sunlight and oversight. DiFi should be more concerned about giving the appearance of being owned.
Perhaps she’s not yet noticed we’re currently experiencing a few problems due to failure of regulators and oversight bodies.
I caught the last part of Harry Smith’s interview with Coulter. Harry really put her down.
When she was rambling on and on, and on, not letting him speak he told her numerous times to take a breath. He also told her she was the whiner, when he was trying to have a real discussion about racial intollerance and mentioned that a liberal talk show host friend of his was gunned down. He also mentioned that National Review fired her saying that when you get deeper into discussion with Coulter, the less sense she makes. Finally at the end he said she might as well have a cross, implying she was painting herself as the victim.
SD, Gag….ridiculous. Tho I think the problem is to avoid an equivalency of Ill and MN. He “stepped in it” with his Ill reaction, from what Ive heard. Good Morning. (Am going to try to seriously get out earlier today; yesterday was big delay) But, cold and raining today. Ugh
I’m surprised Hil isn’t wearing an Israeli flag pin.
Anyone heard from Norske?
The ‘final solution’ is being used on blogs to describe what Israel is doing to the Palestinians. It is what it is. Reality is reality. The term means to try to kill a certain race/religion of people. The Jews do not own the phrase. Five million other people were killed under Hitler. The world only remembers the Jews.
This blog uses the term and he is totally correct in the manner in which he uses it.
http://www.kawther.info/K20080121A.html
I hadn’t heard that. I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone sometimes.
Someplace today I saw the emphemism “near torture.”
Nope. Did he go somewhere over the holidays? I don’t remember him sayin’ anything.
well shit, if it’s being used on blogs it must be true
Good for Harry; I’ll check in.
last i know citizen norske was here day before yesterday
Fond memories:
dunno, worries me a bit, you know how old we are getting
great, thanks!
Yesterday, on msnbc (can’t remember which program) Hillary Mann Leverett said that Obama’s ME policy was a disaster, more pro-Israel than W’s.
I heard it on the radio but can’t remember whether it was NPR headlines, DN, or the evening news on my community radio station. Just a real quick blurb.
Why should it be wrong to describe what the fascists are doing as the “final solution”?
“Which some left-wing Democratic critics describe as possibly being near torture-lite like.”
That OK?
especially considering the context.

oh silly me…all this time I thought that torture was clearly defined under such documents as the Geneva Convention.

I’m reminded of the day we protested outside St Pete Mayor Rick Baker’s church one Sunday because of the city’s treatment of the homeless. About 1 in 10 of the churchgoers was under 65. My thought was they’ve realized their mortality, are afraid of dying and reaching out for immortality in the sky.
Read it before you judge that he is wrong.
i think scarecrow’s diary has the youtube (countdown)

foxhole conversion
Didn’t convert me. Scared the livin’ shit outta me each and every time but didn’t convert me.
Scarecrow has posted a diary about that interview, and I have a comment on it.
I recognized the names of Hillary’s advisors. She described them a “neocon fellow travelers.” But it took me about five minutes that she had actually said that they’d “make us long for the days of Bush.” Damn that’s pretty harsh. Check it out: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/#28512590
Drove me away from it more than anything.
I had heard this morning that reason for Israel’s move now was because of better reaction from W….go figure.
Also, “tantamont to torture.”
Just watched the whole thing. It’s not encouraging, especially coming from such an obviously knowledgeable and connected individual.
oh I don’t know, we prolly even. .)
Morning swim upstairs…
Roger that.
yes, and almost torture, faux torture.
IMHO, the Saban Center is a neocon outfit. It was founded by Haim Saban, an Israeli billionaire and big-time Hillary backer/fund-raiser. He describes himself as “a one-issue guy and my issue is Israel.” She owes him a lot and he’ll collect. Among her advisors are
Martin Indyk, director of the Saban Center
Kenneth Pollack, research director of the Saban Center
Michael O’Halon, an associate of the Saban Center was an advisor during the campaign, but I haven’t seen him listed.
Dennis Ross, who my friends regard to be a neocon.
We are not going to see anything near even-handedness.
who said it though?
Ross has been keeping a low profile, but I bet he shows up after HRC’s confirmation
wigwam, i agree with your conclusion although i don’t know (or forgot) the saban angle. ross otoh, i remember and do not like for his anti-palestinian role. when word came out that clinton was going to be sos we have a bit of an argument over at emptywheel with some saying that clinton was a signal for great things in the ME and some saying wtf?
i’d like to see ross offered a post of ambassador to some country without muslims and without any ties to the ME.
I’d prefer he become the SLJO at State, or any other agency.
SLJO = Shitty Little Jobs Officer, usually assigned to a brand new Ensign on ships.
LOL!
Thanks for the introduction (or as Sarah Palin might say, “Thanks, but no thanks”). The general concensus seems to be — if Feinstein & Rockefeller are opposed, it’s a good thing (see, ferinstance, Glenn Greenwald, Josh Marshall & Steve Benen).
It seems to me Obama is sneaking back onto the correct track — with Panetta at the CIA and Johnsen at OLC I’m seeing the “no more torture” presidency come to life.
The Constant Weader at http://www.RealityChex.com
Can anyone deny now that we are ruled by a dictator?
Obama has told Fienstein: “You need oversight”
I have been delighted about this appointment from the first. Now somebody representing me (even if he is a career politician) is going to take better measure of the “crown jewels”. Democratic opposition from Fienstein and Rockefeller is self-serving; they were compliant about torture. This is a moral issue, not a political one. It is an issue to sacrifice for. They were immoral to not scream bloody murder (a sealed letter of concern doesn’t cut it), and I don’t care if the reason was fear. America needed heros. America needs heros and I want governance…whistleblowers and new people on the inside with institutional memory like Panetta to put 2 & 2 together.
When are those two senate terms up? (If I had their history, I’d not run again. But then I hope I wouldn’t have made their intel choices in the last eight years.) Knowing what they know I can imagine they do want to keep it in the family, even if they are the only the begrudged distant aunt and uncle. Lots of “could ‘ya, would ‘ya, should ‘yas” rolling around around in their heads.
I listened to Rep. Rush Holt’s endorsment. That’s what I expect to here from entrenched elected representatives who want me to believe they couldn’t do anything during the Cheney/Bush national nightmare.
DiFi’s priorities: 1. Israel 2. Wealthy 3. Gun control
fixed it for ya. .)
The “Gliewitz Incident” was made known to the world via war crimes trials. In the absence of war crimes trials the world might never have known the breath of deception perpetrated on the German people by Hitler and his fascist scum. Today we know “”fascsist”" in the White House enabled by powerful media outlets fabricated/misrepresented facts to the American people and world to justify the invasion of
PolandIraq to protect theGermanAmerican homeland fromPolishIraqi terrorist who allegedly aided and attacked theGliewitz radio installation.Twin Towers. Funny how history repeats… errrrrrrrSaddam was not involved with 911 just as the Poles never attacked Germany! Yet America fails to hold our own leaders responsible for a “big lie” to justify stealing resources of another nation. War Crimes! Jefferson is likely vomiting in his grave! Hold the war criminals and their enablers accountable!
After 911 Bushco took a page out of the Nazi’s fascist Handbook. Everyone knows it! GO read history DIFI, Jay and Jane as you’ll eviscerate the checks and balances of the 4th amendment as forewarned by Jefferson. Now you pay the price. Meanwhile Bushco is trying to revise the facts leading up to “The Iraq Oil Plot.” So with a green light from Washington the oppressed have become the oppressors via a disproportionate response killing civilians in the name of self defense while dropping bombs on UN schools in Gaza even when the IAF had been given the GPS coordinates for UN schools. Go figure… the hole thing is disgusting. I’m sure the people of Gaza are experiencing the same pain as did the Pole of Warsaw! Isolated, economically depressed deprived of dignity, treated as second class citizens where they have no rights… when the oppressed becomes the oppressor………….
Perhaps DiFi is worried about her own precious behind under a torture-adverse administration, with the potential for investigations of her complicity (although unlikely).
