This probably was not the best choice of metaphor…
A close friend of Caroline Kennedy says the U.S. Senate hopeful is "unfazed and going forward" despite a wave of recent criticism.
"She understands that when you go straight to playing for the New York Yankees without playing ball in college or in the minors, you are going to get beaten up the first few times you step on to the field," said the friend, who has spoken directly with her.
Maybe this isn’t so bad if you’re a casual or non-fan, but those of us who follow baseball closely can tell you that if you go straight to the majors without playing college or minor-league ball, you get beat up more than just a few times. The three pitchers who have done so since the free-agent draft began in 1965 have combined for 177 wins and 251 losses. The lone position player who did so batted an impressive .444… in nine career at-bats.
The record shows that making the jump to the big leagues without any experience is not a recipe for prolonged success. Mike Morgan, the only one of those four players who sustained any kind of career, did spend two years in the minors after a terrible start. There is value to seasoning and experience, especially when it comes to high-pressure jobs like United States Senator or, yes, major-league pitcher.
Perhaps Caroline has the raw natural talent to make the jump successfully, but without any kind of track record comparable to college or minor-league performance, it’s almost impossible to guess. New York is a complex and demanding state – is it willing to take a chance on an untried rookie?
(Photo is a statue of Joe Nuxhall, who made his Reds debut at age 15 during World War II. He got tagged for 5 runs in two-thirds of an inning, but went back to the minors and became a successful, popular pitcher and broadcaster.)

Margaret Carlson on Olbermann. Why are the Piggy Bushies keeing the Obama’s out of Blair House? Carlson says Former Austrailian Prime Minister Howard was invited there in order to have an excuse to keep the Obama’s out of there. It has more than a 100 rooms and over 30 bathrooms. Blair House has better security but since when is Obama’s security an issue to them? The neo-cons are just using this as a final insult to Obama.
LeBron James sucks too.
This is the Old Left-hander, rounding third and heading for home…
Well, there have actually been a few good basketball players who jumped direct from HS to the NBA. But even there only about a third actually go on to great careers, with another third roughly having decent careers but not great and the remainder being posters for staying in school.
I think Eli might have a a bit more research to do this if the spokesperson had chosen basketball and the Knicks/Celtics/Lakers.
If she wants to be involved with the Yankees, why not have her buy the team? It would have the double benefit of getting rid of Steinbrenner and taking her out of Senate contention… Seems like a win-win situation to me.
It doesn’t seem to apply in basketball, although I’m not entirely sure what the difference is. I’m trying not to use this as evidence of the inherent superiority of baseball over basketball…
What are the stats on 51 year old high school students making it in the majors?
Only pansies play baseball
;~P
Digg is open for you fellow Eli fans.
Pretty poor, I reckon. There *are* couple of interesting stories about 60 & 70-year-old guys playing college football and basketball.
I’m ready for the entire Bush family to go back to the minor leagues. The idea that Jeb! could be a senator or anything other than a historical asterisk is revolting.
Do I have this right? An unnamed friend of Caroline has used a lame metaphor. Damn! That seals the deal – you know.
It is better.
But football is even better.
Tom Brady was never a QB starter and he has 3 rings (big ones with lots of shiny stones).
good, because there isn’t any…
I’m sure Harry Asshole will block Caroline Kennedy from being seated in the Senate anyways. Hell, I’m sure Harry will have Barack Obama impeached within Barack’s first year too. I mean, really, he just doesn’t want any progressive liberals near him! We should be thankful for that! Spit.
So untrue, at least one rose, Pete Rose to be exact played.
I’m not sure which I like better, but the gap for me between football & baseball vs. basketball & hockey is pretty wide.
But the rest play(ed) for the paycheck, eh?
Rachel is roasting the Bushies about their refusal to let the Obamas stay at Blair House.
One of the things I have not yet heard is the question of why, with a term-limited president leaving, Blair House was not reserved for the use of the new president-elect during the transition period–oh,about four years ago?
You need ask?
Oh, that’s an easy one.
Bush is a dick.
I personally would be willing to let Caroline Kennedy show us what she’s got. But I’m not from New York.
I always admired how Pete stamped the plate. Of course, that was after his baseball career.
I’m a dick. George the lesser doesn’t even qualify for that distinction.
Please tell me you didn’t know that off the top of your head.
I’d love to pitch for the Yankees. Where do I sign up?
3. But not 4. ’cause the Giants. Stomp. Him. Out! (Remember your Beerfart Heart over Head Pick o’ the Week; Giants straight up over pats.)
Seems to me this MW definition is spot on…
Probably best to leave that up to your imagination.
George a douchebag.
Caroline Kennedy was born into politics and for any of us to say that she wouldn’t be qualified is also saying that we wouldn’t be qualified, even though, we talk politics all the time. Granted, Caroline hasn’t voted as much as we would like, but just recently Sarah Palin admitted that she didn’t know she couldn’t directly appoint someone to fill Ted Stevens’ spot, even though, the state of Alaska had voted on the measure! *shaking head*
If Caroline isn’t qualified, then neither is the liberal comedian, Al Franken, or that Roland Burris guy who is considered one of the honest politicians in the state of Illinois. (Even on right wing Howie Carr’s radio show today, the question was asked on whether or not Burris should be seated and 95% said he should be!)
how about, he’s a disease?
of course, that would not be fair to measles, mumps, tuberculosis…
Franken spent 2 1/2 yrs campaigning all through Minnesota. And then went through a primary and an election.
and a recount.
Al Franken’s a good counterexample. However, he *did* make the case to the voters of Minneapolis and convinced a slim majority of them to vote for him over Smilin’ Norm. If Caroline were willing and able to reach the Senate by that route, I would have no problem with her at all.
I’ve lived in Illinois all my life and never heard that Roland Burris is honest. Trying to have an innocent man executed would seem to contradict that idea.
i got nothing to say…. having been a big supporter of ned lamont for senate in 2006.
Again, though, he ran for election. If a candidate can make the sale to the voters, I’m okay with it. Lack of experience *and* lack of election is two strikes against, so to speak.
depends on who calling the strikes.
But really, he’s a comedian for most of his life and had a radio show gig. Right?
And Ratfood? Name one crime Burris has been accused and convicted of.
CK is a Kennedy. She will rock. Imagine the likes of her in, say Harry Reid’s seat..
(Disclaimer – I’m a dick)
;~P
A baked potato would be an improvement over Harry.
Caroline Kennedy has co-written two books about constitutional rights. OK, she has never run for public office. But how many senators have written books about constitutional rights?
Then again, I am ambivalent about her as a possible appointee. After all, if her birth name were Caroline Karpowitz, or whatever, she undoubtedly would not be in contention for the appointment…
ok. i was wrong. i do have something to say.
don’t think politics is a bloodline kind of thing. she might be qualified, or she might not. so far it looks like not. imo the name is not a qualification.
Not (yet) having been formally charged or convicted doesn’t mean that he is honest.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Blagojevich has a legal right to appoint Burris and that Burris should be seated.
I think sometimes we Democrats work against ourselves. We say we want more liberal progressives in office, but when we have some, we crap all over them! Hell, even Harry Reid is crapping on them for us. What the hell. Pretty soon at this rate, we’ll be jumping in the arms of republicans and asking them to save us from the Democrats! LOL *shaking head* I’m sorry, but I just think we all need to relax, wait for January 20th, and then, give Barack some time, because if we don’t….Harry Reid will have the man impeached over something stupid and he’ll be able to say he had the backing of many liberals across this country and will be able to give examples. I don’t look forward to this nor do I like helping the republicans take down Barack through Harry Reid.
“Name one crime Burris has been accused and convicted of”
that’s a pretty high standard to hold him to.
or is it?
Yeah, this is my problem. Maybe someone has the chops, maybe they don’t. But they should have to make the case to the voters.
My gut feeling, though, is that Paterson is *not* going to pick her.
Do I have this rigt? We have spent years complaining about the spineless and brain dead actions of our Democratic Senators. Now, we are bitching because someone dares to enter this Vichy community without going through the farm system that produced these Democratic Senators.
who do you think it will be? will he pick himself?
LOL. best argument yet.
don’t buy it, but still a hell of a good one. almost had me for a moment. *g*
I don’t think there’s any legitimate reason to block Burris. The play was to block Blago from making a pick in the first place, not trying to undo it after it was (legally) made. I think it was pretty icky and opportunistic of Burris to accept, but that’s not disqualifying.
I have 7 speeding tickets on my license, does this mean I’m not qualified to become a Senator? Oh wait. I’m a progressive liberal, so therefore, Reid would block me from entering for this reason, but would allow the diaper wearing David Vitter, the toe tapping for gay sex in an airport stall Larry Craig, and Joe Lieberman the fake democrat to remain! Hell, if Stevens had been elected up there in Alaska, Reid would have gave the man a blow job upon entering! LOL
I mean, really, what ARE the qualifications to become a US Senator in this country? Or a Governor? Or a Congressman/woman? Or even President? Or a filler for a seat?
I think it is clear that he won’t pick her. She’d have had a much better chance she hadn’t tried to pressure Paterson. I think she mistaken believed her name alone would ensure a groundswell of public support.
…OR getting elected. And it’s not like she’s a scrappy unknown outsider underdog.
The vibe I’ve been getting from her is, “I’m a Kennedy, I want to be a Senator, so what’s the holdup?”
I wish I knew. I kinda suspect that whoever he picks will be a surprise, but right now I would guess Cuomo or Suozzi.
Evidence suggests a requisite pact with Satan.
…checking on this…..
I would also point out that her voting record is pretty lackluster, although she supposedly had to be reminded of this. This also contributes to my sense that her desire to be a senator is more of an opportunistic whim than a deep-seated commitment to service.
Or anyone else whose last name includes “uo”
LOL
Seriously, whoever I guess, I’ll be wrong.
God, a piece on PBS, Torturing Democracy about how we moved to a country that torture…to be a film, then a discusion…O dear, but I need to go to bed. There’s W in that Florida school.
I highly doubt Sarah Palin voted very much, but yet, she’s the Governor now!
We always vote, but then again, we’re schmucks.
Or a wet tissue.
We? WE??? Yes, folks, it’s time for barbara to decompress and bed down. G’nite.
Now you’ve moved into doppelganger territory.
ability to raise a shit load of money
better answer.
Seriously, I think the higher the office, the lower the probability of it being occupied by a person of integrity. The funding required to mount a successful campaign typically insures that the candidate has mortgaged their soul to everyone who would buy a piece.
I’m not suggesting a total absence of integrity in elected officials, just that it is the exception, not the rule.
Well, I guess I am willing to forgive CK’s reluctance to engage in retail politics. I seem to remember some family history or some such.

Dammit. A progressive is running for Rahm’s vacant seat:
http://voices.washingtonpost.c…..=the-trail
He is best known for representing steelworkers, nurses, dissident Teamsters and the uninsured in lawsuits; and for writing a play, four books and editorials about labor struggles
What the hell! Who the hell does he think he is! I hope Reid can find a way to block this guy even though he doesn’t have jurisdiction over him. Four books he wrote? What the hell! Not the kind of qualifications we’re looking for in politics! LOL
If you’re quoting Working Class Hero, the actual lyric is:
I never before thought of the hill as referring to the U.S. Congress but it seems apt.
Well, we are trying to change that, aren’t we? Caroline, though loaded with dough, has a ton of integrity, as does, Al Franken and from what I’ve read about Burris, he does too. ;-)
Who is Suozzi?
I believe Franken has integrity and Caroline. If we needed additional evidence that Burris doesn’t he accepted the Blagojevich appointment. Legal yes, ethical no.
I really have no strong opinion regarding whether or not Caroline should replace the carpetbagger who last occupied the NY seat. I think the process of governors appointing legislators instead of letting voters decide is flawed but I can’t do anything about that.
Nassau County Executive. Apparently a pretty powerful guy.
I totally agree with this. And by appointing so many Senators (and being one himself), Obama has really exposed the cracks in the system.
Yeah well, Cheney is the Dick !
Eli !
There will be a special election for this seat in ‘10 and the regular election for it again in ‘12.
This appointment is just for the period from the time HRC resigns until the election in ‘10
Suozzi does seem like quite an up and comer. I would support his appointment.
I am not really a big supporter of CK. I do; however, resist what I consider to be bogus attacks on her.
New post
IOW, the jostling in the queue is unlikely to end soon.
Paterson will be running on the same ticket in ‘10 with whomever he appoints. He most likely wants someone that helps him AND is electable so that NY doesn’t lose any more seniority through all this. Seniority is why all the articles floating a “caretaker” perspective are just so much BS.
Caroline Kennedy = Sidd Finch?

Coffee on the screen and keyboard! Thanks for that insight provoking laugh!
I suspect that the majority of votes coleman received were cast for the party not the candidate. Repubs follow orders.
