Note: I’ll be on MSNBC at 6:50 ET with David Shuster talking about Roland Burris tonight — jh
When we started to hear all those rumors about the "inevitability" of Caroline Kennedy as David Paterson’s choice for the Senate, it sure sounded like the last-ditch attempt of a desperate spinmeister to stop the bleeding. You had to wonder what they knew that we didn’t.
Cuomo now leads Kennedy 58%-27% as the one that voters would like to see Gov. David Paterson appoint to the Senate, with a 54%-34% spread among Democrats only. In last month’s poll, which tested Democrats only, Kennedy had a 44%-23% lead. So a 21-point Caroline lead among Democrats has turned into a 20-point Cuomo advantage.
People have certainly overcome huge obstacles on their path to office before (though this one looks pretty ugly). If Kennedy has the kind of moxie it takes to be a good Senator for the state of New York, let’s see her fight her way back and convince people she’d be a good choice.
If it turns out she just doesn’t have the taste for public life and isn’t willing to do that, it’s good to find out now. These kind of numbers certainly give Paterson every excuse he needs to Just Say No.
Sounds like the Kennedy/Lieberman handler, Josh Isay, is a bit distracted though. Doesn’t seem like he’s quite on his game. Probably has his hands full with other clients like Michael Bloomberg and Bibi Netanyahu at the moment.

I’d looked forward to a political virgin in the Senate as opposed the the politicos who infect it now. When Caroline went with Josh Isay I realized she’s a virgin in name only. Pattueeee!
Hey Rosie has a brother what were his numbers? Heck lets list qualifications education and experience as well as poll numbers and of course what is in it for Patterson (as long as its not cash).
A public promise to campaign against Bloomberg for example. Granted I don’t know him but he should shift parties or expect to get targeted.
As a former resident of NY, I’m not sure who I would vote for amongst all the names floated for this seat.
But I’m pretty sure there would be a number of names on the list before I get to Caroline Kennedy. Including her cousin Robert and her former cousin-in-law Andrew.
My $.02
Thanks Jane.

Thanks for the notice, I’ll look forward to seeing you live.
AP was reporting a couple of days ago that Caroline was the pick. Whatever happened to that story? Did they retract it?
LMAO
“Let’s run to where the danger is!”
/MST3K
That AP story was bogus from the beginning. “Officials close to the Governor are saying…” and a few other caveats that got buried in the headlines.
Really just seemed to be more folks trying to push Paterson into a corner and proclaim the inevitability of it all.
Aha. Just another example of me not being cynical enough.
AP didn’t but a named spokesman for Paterson as opposed to an anon source did
“The AP story is incorrect,” Paterson spokesman Errol Cockfield
Thanks. I’d missed that.
Thanks for the head’s up about your appearance on MSNBC this evening. With luck Schuster minds his manners & resists dominating your air time. If I’m mixing him up with the gabby chauvinist boys club manners I’ll stand corrected. (((((JANE)))))
OT-Shrub’s lap dog, Tony Blair, is being awarded the US Medal of Freedom…
OT: Epic fail x 3: Blair, Howard, Uribe to be awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom!

Are you talking about Bloomberg switching parties? He’s already been a D, then a R, now an I. What’s left?
Wow
blair and howard are bad enough, they seem kind of in line with tenet getting one. but uribe? irony is dead and buried. what the fuck is this?
I like Shuster, he’s been nice to us since we met him at the Libby trial.
At the end of the article, the named Paterson spokesman sez that the primary objective (my characterization) is to pick someone who can get elected, as seniority is so impt in the senate. That means that the poll results Jane cites are really important.
I must admit I’m astonished at Caroline’s deflation in the polls. I had thought (and typed) that with her pedigre and the sympathy factor, she could easily get elected. OTOH, I never expected her to perform so badly in public.
Unlike Jane, Caroline does not seem ready for prime time. :>)
He can come back from the dark side its not to late.
He’s already made a mockery of himself. One more party switch and that will be apparent to everyone.
Got 20 pages left in my book. BBL.
Perhaps the mystery was a large part of Caroline’s appeal. Now that people have seen her in public, maybe they aren’t so impressed. This happens to all kinds of political figures — remember how support for Social Security “reform” sagged every time W campaigned out in the country for it? And how Rudi’s polling sank wherever he campaigned for President?
People like our princesses locked in the tower, not communicating with us. And, frankly, her communication has been abysmal. She’s not a talker, by any stretch.
Will Bush hang it on his tiny pee-pee?

GD – greedy dipshit
Willie Brown also had her as a shoo-in inferring she was BO’s choice in his weekly Sunday column for our local rag (SF Chronicle)about a week ago.
Willie’s reasoning was how could Patterson not pick her because of BO’s preferences.
One thought on this whole CK senate bid is does a senator trump a first lady(CA) in the social pecking order?
Now that her candidacy seems safely a thing of the past, I would like to say that there were definitely ways for her to make her candidacy more viable.
She never really spoke to the voters of New York and explained in a very convincing way:
1) she was serious about wanting the job
2) what her positions were the main issues of the day
3) what she could do for New Yorkers
She didn’t engage with either the public or the press to give them any feel for who she was. She didn’t show due deference to Paterson or state Democrats.
She essentially hid behind her handlers. Think how thinks might have been different if she had just said I’m interested but it’s Paterson who makes the call. If she had found a public forum or more than one and said how she supported getting the country out of Iraq, how she was going to fight to save New York’s financial industry, and the jobs of New York workers. I mean I think this was doable but instead we got the worst version possible of a Princess Caroline caricature, remote, entitled, and disengaged.
I would imagine in Caroline’s case she would trump just about anybody, bein’ JFK’s daughter an’ all.
Good to hear from you again, newspaperbrat.
I haven’t seen you in the threads lately. Hope all is well. Jim C
I was thinking more along the lines of table talk when the whole clan gets together regarding social protocols.
As far as being JFK’s (gone now for over 45 years)daughter, isn’t that the what this issue has been all about, legacy versus merit/ability.
I prolly should have put a snark tag on my comment. I imagine that Caroline does rule the roost at yer basic social gathering though. If nothing else the attendees at such soirees respect the Kennedy wealth and name.
Damn, thank doG that Ned Lamont didn’t think this way when he was down 40% just a couple months from his primary.
Oh, and if Paterson does appoint Kennedy, I assume she’ll get the rapid and full support that Roland Burris has gotten from many around here?
good God, who cares what you blog people think? Get a life, do something productive, and stop being annoying. thank you
He can become a Progressive and be a …. DRIP /g
Couldn’t help it
Jane!
Patterson is a smart man. Don’t give up on Elliot Spitzer!
1. He’s a Democrat, not a DINO.
2. He’s smart.
3. He needs a shot at (redemption) rehabilitation.
4. He knows where the bodies are buried on Wall Street.
5. The Republicans are terrified of him.
If not Senator from New York, how about Elliot Spitzer, DOJ Special Federal Financial Investigator with Subpoena power and a real budget for a complete investigation of the economic melt down and exactly what the financial wizards of Wall Street did with our 350 billion dollars?
No, thank YOU!
I watched Paterson being interviewed and he sounded a lot like a Liberal Republican — kinda like Bloomberg. I suspect he is confused about Kennedy and her neocon adviser. Is she Conservative or Liberal? He might think Cuomo is Liberal, but as the only big name alternative he might feel boxed in there. The chance he’d pick Spitzer is about zero since Spitzer was going to reveal all about Wall Street.
Who’s that leave then? Who’s next down the list?
If there’s nobody of repute who “can win an election” then it has to be flipping a coin between Cuomo and Kennedy. If the polling is important then it’s probably Cuomo. But, if he has some idea of subverting the Liberal, then it’s Kennedy and the safety of her choice of a neocon adviser.
It’s complicated, but Paterson is in a tough spot considering his rationale, his perhaps hidden agenda he has to be able to explain his pick.
It’s totally unclear to me and that’s why I’ve been keeping my mouth shut about each of these states where a new senator has to be picked. How many of us really knows anything about politics in other states?
And revealing all about Wall Street is not what we need? How exactly does anyone fix a problem without actually identifying the problem?
I may not know a lot about politics in other states, but I know what I like…
