I was on MSNBC with David Shuster tonight, talking about the ubiquitous Roland Burris. While I was waiting to go on, I saw Lynn Sweet break the story that Burris was headed to Dick Durbin's DC shindig for new senators tonight.
I got home to find the pool report in my email:
Print pool report
Jan. 5, 2009At 7:40 p.m., Obama left the hotel and dropped by Dick Durbin's party at Bobby Van's Steak House.
A roar went up from a crowd of 250 in the atrium outside the restaurant as Obama came in, and PEBO then dove in and mixed with the Durbin friends.
Durbin stayed close behind as Obama waded through a crowd that, though it is a party for incoming U.S. Senators, was heavy with Illinoisians.
Obama's attendance hadn't been promised but, minutes before the president-elect's arrival, Durbin gave a friend a hint.
"He said there was a former Illinois state senator on his way," said state Sen. Jeff Schoenberg, an llinois Democrat. Word spread through the room quickly.
"A big crowd gathered at the foot of the stairs, ostensibly to hear a few words from Dick," Schoenberg said. "They got more than they hoped for . . . Even more, I mean."
"More than they hoped for?" Yeah, you can say that again.

Burris was just on Rachel Maddow, he had good comportment and stayed on message that he was in Washington to represent the state of Illinois.
Jane, I thought you were much more articulate than Shuster. I think it’s time for MSNBC to offer you your own show.
So, I guess the consensus is that Blago pwned Reid and the entire U.S. Senate?
Bob in HI
Yeah, he has good comportment and stays on message. He also thinks The Lord Has Ordained This. Thanks, but no thanks…
The irony keeps writing itself.
Blagojevich really had nothing to lose in making an appointment. He has certainly demonstrated that the “new” Senate leadership is indiscernible from the “old” Senate leadership and just as ineffective. Time for Reid to retire.
Good to see you on tv. You were excellent. Your point regarding the legality of the Burris appointment and the importance of following the law was great. Your critique of Reid was perfect - just right. It seems that Mr. Shuster had already pointed out the Lieberman - Reid hypocrisy vis a vis the Burris Apppointment. Glad you brought up Rove, Miers and the Seargent At Arms enforcement issue. Great Work.
I also found that particularly galling.
PEBO?
PEBO????
Really?
WHY? “Obama” isn’t short enough?
Jane ,you were outstanding, beautiful to look at,smiling all the while delivering your pretty pearls of wisdom…take a bow
Showing Harry for the “empty-shirt leader” status he seems to beg for. Pitch-perfect, Jane.
I agree completely. Why do people have to say stupid stuff like that?
and the little racial dig was interesting
illnever forget the day that snake in the grass,Reid was at the Lake….petulant ,and shallow imo
see the last thread
Took a page out of the Palin playbook.
Almost enough to put me off Mormons…:-)
I have an idea that the goddess has more important things to do than choose a Senator - like war, famine, etc.
Meanwhile, over in our beloved Minne-snowta, where the thermometer bottomed out at -33 last night in Greenbush [you okay out there, ironranger?]….
Why is Norm Coleman going back on his own words about accepting the vote of the people if you’re not in the lead?
And why is Norm Coleman putting Minnesota at the bottom of the barrel in seniority by his stall-and-delay tactics?
And how much money has been raised by/for Normie as ostensible recount funds which can be diverted into his legal defense fund if indicted?
Which brings me back to Burris? What are these undercurrents about Burris and quickie wealthbuilding since he left office? Is there any “there” there?
Personally I don’t go for none of that hooey
Marie and Donny?
Anyone seen the Flamethrower?
Me neither.
gosh no,hope he is aokay
just got an e-mail from a friend in Washington State. Christine Gregoire has been gone all day:
From my interview just now with Gregoire spokesperson Laura Lockard:
Q: Is Governor Gregoire going to be Obama’s nominee for Commerce
Secretary?
A: “We’re not able to speak to that so we’ll do a release in the
morning.”
Q: Where is she?
A: “She’s out of state.”
Q: Is she in the country?
A: “I’m not allowed to say.”
Q: Is she going to continue as Governor of Washington State?
A: “I’m not allowed to say.”
Like everyone, I await tomorrow’s announcement. But I will say—and
again this is just tea leaves—that Lockard didn’t sound like a staffer
who was mourning some sort of personal tragedy in her boss’s life.
And, not to get too far ahead of things, but: Governor Brad Owen?
In Chicago, nooooooooo?
Oy, there’s the clincher.
Having the “infamous” Jane Hamsher tell the world that Harry Reid is a nimcompoop who stomps his feet and puffs his cheeks out with breath held, as if that is going to stop the world from laughing at him, has got to hurt poor Harry, and make the rest of us, who have been suffering through the ****’s hold on Democracy, enjoin in big grins. This is a little taste of what we’re after. Get rid of the worms and cancers. Harry is top worm.
I’m more disturbed by his actions as IL AG - trying to push an execution of someone after it was clear they were not guilty.
I did a OD diary of this
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....55393.html
More like “Notorious”!
What is it and do you have one?
hahahaaha
The NorskeFlamethower.
1899 dayz and the killin goes on and on
I hope one of these weenies didn’t run him off.
worms are more honest in their daily tasks…..g
hey, no brown-nosin’, man but jane really oughtta be on these shows more often.
but my vid wasn’t workin at the beginning. WTF was Lieberman babbling about?
nahhhhhhhhh
Sorry. Just didn’t think. Used to people calling him Norske but Flamethrower is much better. :)
you dont want to know, believe me
I know nothing of his actions, just that he seems to be more than a wee bit unhinged when I see him interviewed. I defer to anyone with more knowledge regarding what he’s actually done. The example you raise sounds ominously like the Troy Davis situation here in Georgia, which is horrible enough that Amnesty International is involved.
I dunno, OK Kiddo, James, Jonathon
Obama will be PEBO until January 20th. Upon his inauguration, he will become PBO or Bama.
he is a stalwart methinks
You’re right — he’s been missing for a while. I confess I didn’t notice over the fuss and frivol of the holidays… Hope he’s okay.
i believe you
Did Obama and Burris run into each other at the Durbin party? Would be interesting.
what is this pebo you speak of?
As opposed to a “stall-wart,” ala Larry Craig?
and then they’ll start that potus bullshit, it like calling the hokies VAAAAHHH Tech, morons!
Nice job Jane- calm, logical. The perfect antithesis to the ranting blogger stereotype the corporate media is trying to use to tar the online community with. Great point about going back to the rule of law- what a concept.
If the networks thought Jane could sell deodorant or toothpaste she would already have a show.
extolling John McCrazies peerless virtues hehehehehehe
President Elect Barack Obama = PEBO
Yea, and we are old. I tried several times to make contact outside of the Lake but he wasn’t down. On the other hand, he has been known to go to negril.
Seriously, I don’t know that she’d want it. Tends to tie a person down.
Time to DiGG It Pups!
oh you are getting warmed up early!
yes im clueless,thank you
Nicely done Jane.
I do hope he’s okay. There were times when he made me want to tear my hair out, but his heart has always been in the right place.
Yes, I remember how we pantsed Harry Reid here at FDL. And we did it in a collegial manner. Reid won’t be coming round here no more.
I was a little baffled at first, kept confusing it with a “pee-bow,” which is a type of knot employed to help with a bladder control problem.
marshmellow fluffy ,he is
He damn near told us to get off his lawn… Not the best visitor here!
hahahahahahaa
marshmallow?
oh i want one,but im on a big NEW YEARS diet….g
gnite,good movie TCM sir alec
Excellent!
Brilliant!
and we can only hope that give em hell harry catches this!
he’s just NOT the most popular kid in the village.
he needs REPLACED, and BADLY!
wtg, Jane. You spoke for me. OMG! I just got “represented” somewhere.
MAN! does that feel GOOD or what?
You were supposed to respect his office which requires overlooking his inept use of it.
nite, sadly
Is it decorated really nicely? /snark
Would it be fair to say that Reid has a Burris under his saddle?
citizen norske was here yesterday.
You’ve seen the latest Clint Eastwood ad for Gran Torino. Clint threatens, Get off my lawn!
Clint’s a Republican. That line comes naturally to old Republican meanies.
Yes - the boxer - Give-em-Hell Harry Reid took some fierce blows to the noggin. He could not have predicted…because he didn’t do any due dilligence.
He damn near told us to get off his lawn… Not the best visitor here!
sorry I missed that one.
Wes Clark sucked big time when he was here too.
And who was it that selise and I jumped all over about his support of a particularly stupid bill?
Have never understood why people want to do something or be something when they appear to be so uncomfortable in the job. Harry doesn’t look at ease with this at all. The Peter Principle lives !
There was an O’Reilly supporter at FDL?
Clearly the prerequisites for (real) leadership are more than simple seniority.
There was an O’Reilly supporter at FDL?
Just Olbermann and/or his staff - but that’s for an entirely different reason….
Hey, just droppin in during 1/2 time, Jane you were fabulous, and it didn’t look at all like youwere wearing pjs in your parents basement *G*
You were way better than Shuster. Looked like he was stammering under his breath.
BBL 2nd 1/2 is starting
349 hrs & 49 min
Nice takedown of Give-Em-Head-Harry, Jane — you were simply swell.
Ah… Thanks! Good to know.
And she wasn’t covered in Cheetoh dust either…!
Reid’s lobbyist sons benefited from Dad’s position. As uncomfortable as Reid is, he knows how to work the levers to his own advantage. Like most politicians he enjoys the Money and the Power very much.
Great analysis Jane, as usual!
Guess that would explain why his knees always buckle.
Like most politicians he’s great at accepting the perks, it’s just the job he sucks at.
wexler. who then went and wrote: Iran Resolution Must Change
high five
Its a balancing act. They’ve got to maintain the appearance of serving the public while they serve corporate masters.
The Republicans have an easier job of this because their constituents believe that serving corporations benefits themselves.
Lieberman’s worst nightmare…
“Now on MSNBC… The Firedoglake Show, with Jane Hamsher.” LOL
You are tenacious Jane, and I love it ; )
Very well said.
I’d like to second that, if I’m not too late.
Your second is accepted. Think everyone has gone upstairs to Kirk’s post.
what’s the stereotype (too often accurate) against the Dems? spineless milquetoast, no cojones
who’s the majority leader? someone who fits the stereotype.
how to fix it?
revolution. replace him with someone who clearly has a backbone, a voice and gravitas. someone who’s played poker (apparently being from nevada is no substitute)
someone who can bluff and who can read a tell
not reid
let’s help them out here….
who would be the BEST senate majority leader?
Harry Reid is Superfool, picking all the wrong fights, losing all the important issues, making Democrats look like jerks. It really, really behooves Democrats and Obama to get Reid (and Pelosi) out of any leadership positions.
Simply marvelous Jane! Great how you framed, using truth and common sense, the lawlessness of Bush and Rove in the debate!
Jane, you were fabulous, Shuster couldn’t keep up with you!!
Not to be sexist, but you are getting more beautiful every time I see you on TV. I think it agrees with you - let’s work on getting you your own show - how great would that be!!
Feingold?
Excellent work Jane. Thanks for the vid.
