Look what the Bushies have turned into a cash cow bonanza before leaving office, only eight years after Richard Clarke told them it was desperately needed and they ignored him. Until now. Hmmmm. . . let’s see. . . what could the reason be?
Good of all mankind? Oh yeah, that one’s likely. Actually thinking ahead about a policy need? Well, to do that, they’d need to have actually BEEN thinking ahead, so that’s not it.
Wars are winding down and defense contractor buddies need a new cash cow? Anyone else getting that same tingly feeling reading this:
Lockheed Martin and Boeing have decided the next cash cow is cyber defense.
According to Bloomberg, both companies, "eager to capture a share of a market that may reach $11 billion in 2013," have formed new business units to attract money that the U.S. government will be spending to secure U.S. government computers and, no doubt, to break the security of enemy computer systems.
The companies awoke to the money-making opportunity after President Bush signed a National Security Directive in January, which is commonly known as the Comprehensive National Cyber Security Initiative and is estimated will cost $30 billion or more to implement.
The initiative, which includes the creation of a National Cyber Security Center to be run by the Department of Homeland Security, has been criticized for its secrecy and the role that intelligence agencies may play in the plan. Critics fear the plan is a cover to give U.S. intelligence agencies the unfettered ability to monitor all traffic that passes through the internet.
Shock f-ing doctrine. But not exactly shocking they’d try it on the way out the door, now is it?
Cnet and Bloomberg have more. The Market wires are buzzing about this as an "opportunity" (read "opportunity to bilk the taxpayers, since there are already firms who specialize in cyber security that the Bushies were ignoring for some reason"), see Marketwire and Smartbrief for the investment push. IBM appears to be pushing its expertise as well of late. And if you need some sleep-inducing reading, peruse the policy brief itself.
Why do I feel like the first few days of the Obama administration will be calling a halt to the work of the last few days of the Bushies?

Mooo!! Happy New Year, Christy!
I’m more afraid the obama administration will use the excuse *more important work first* to NOT do anything about what bush had done in this regard.
Happy new year, barbara! It’s freezing ass cold here this morning. Dachshund has planted her belly against the heater vent after her foray into the frozen tundra (or our front yard, as we like to call it).
How are things with you?
George Bush not only passing the milepost of Worst President Ever, but doing his best to pile it on so he’ll keep the title forever.
“Got…war profiteering?”
‘Tis cold enough to freeze the udders off a brass cash cow in MN this morning with forecasted snow/sleet for tomorrow.
Holidays are history and barbara is vertical. Booyah!! Thanks for asking.
How’d you and your FIL fare over the holidays?
HNY Christy. How’s the Peanut? Santa come?
Things went well. He had to have some outpatient surgery right after Christmas, but is recovering pretty well — if very tired — from it. I’m realizing that I need more time to myself, but having trouble finding it — but that will ease itself into the mix after The Peanut goes back to school, too, I’m sure.
Happy happy, all y’all.
wrt Critics fear the plan is a cover to give U.S. intelligence agencies the unfettered ability to monitor all traffic that passes through the internet.
I’m wondering about this line. Why wait until now (wars winding down, need a new cow) if they just wanted more of an excuse to spy on us? And, don’t they already have the resources to monitor all traffic?
Oh yeah — she had a fantastic Christmas. Santa brought her a doll house and a lot of legos and a microscope. She wanted something for her Barbies and something science-y and to build with — good mix for five, I thought.
Pretty cold in mid-Hudson. 10 overnight low, working it’s way up to a toasty 20.
As for cyber-security, bwahahahahaha. Sure they can spy on us (and why for wasting money would the U.S. govt need anything other than NSA). But when it comes to “security” I sometimes see stories about how DOD computers are hacked, and I think the number of those stories that appear in the media are a small fraction of the times it actually occurs.
If folks could give this a digg, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
Oh my goodness gracious me. Reporter on WJ tells us that State Dept employees are afraid that Hillary will politicize the Dept.
Would the scared employees name be Liz Cheney? Or John Bolton? *G*
My email Q on WJ.
The whole reason Karl Rove changed his mind and decided to back the idea (though not Lieberman’s specific proposal) for a Homeland Security department is because he wanted to use DHS as a wedge to try and break the civil service unions.
btw, who was the reporter? Do you know?
Duh, why didn’t I think of that?
Matthew Lee, AP State Dept reporter.
This MN Swede suggests we send Current Occupant, Darth and their posse a gesture of our esteem as we move through this 18th day and counting down. Shhhh. If you listen closely, you can hear the rats scurrying around the White House even as we suck up our morning coffee.
Were my questions at #10 too naive to respond to?
[dugg]
Morning CHS! Happy New Year.
Cyber Security a cash cow? What a surprise.
They need to halt the work of the last eight years. With special attention to the last minute crap. I will be so glad to see the end of the Bush years.
My coffee just finished brewing…am late getting it started today. Hate it when that happens. *g*
Don’t know the answers on that — they do already have the capability, but I suspect that the bigger picture is that the folks who support this (i.e. Cheney, Addington and crew) are burrowing the program just like they are trying to burrow ideologues into career positions at executive agencies. It’s what they did with the Poindexter nonsense the last time around, too — Total Information Awareness, next verse.
Rice,
hamas holding Gazans hostage ever since their coup against the rightful ruler
heh, same as the first.
Maybe or maybe not. But just in case, I will provide my naive response. (No need to thank me; it’s what I do.) I honestly think they’re about the business of making as many problems as they possibly can for Obama, hoping (against hope) that they can somehow render him immobile as he takes his first sit in the Oval Office desk chair. (Bring on the antibiotic Febreeze.)
This is where that trick that Dick Cheney used of stopping the presses on the federal digest could work wonders in their being able to sift through what’s been done before it goes into effect. I just hope folks around Obama and Biden read Jane Mayer, Bart Gellman and crew as closely as we all have.
a two second statement at the White House.
I assume the high tech spying has been done by various agencies up until now, but they know Obama’s not gonna go for that. They want control of the info to be in their corporate friend’s hands. IMHO.
This will be great!….for the police state! Now that they’ve… erm….LOST Mike Connell, they’ll need someone else to do the cyber jerry rigging. Of course they’ll want to spy on the movement that threw them out of power. And Obama will prolly want that info as well. Better keep donating!
If Obama hadn’t caved on FISA, I’d think he wouldn’t be too keen on this one either, but he’s so full of surprises these days, who knows?
Some “lame duck” president, huh?
They need to undo the
workdestruction of the last eight years!434 hrs & 21 min
has anyone on obama’s team spoken out on this? that would be great – after his fisa flip flop i though our privacy was not a concern.
Did you see the other day where Britain is outsourcing some of its spying along the same lines? Bizarre they’d make it public, but there you are…
Thanks. I was just sitting here giggling, ’cause I’ve been accused of focusing on the chummy, girlfriend yak yak more than speaking to the topic.
So, you think the burrowing of their idealogues is for posterity, since they’ll no longer be in power, or do you think they will have back room power?
“This war brought to you courtesy of the GWB Let’s Cram Democracy Down Everyone’s Throat and Suck up Oil Foundation. Th…th…that’s all, folks.”
You and me both. The first thing Obama should reverse however, is the EO regarding the time presidential records are held. Used to be 12 years, Bush made it 20 to keep Reagan’s and his daddy’s records quiet until he left office. Let’s get that stuff out in the open!
Hey, Barbara, let you a note on the other thread. I guess we can make it for 3 weeks…and also maybe include some good news from MN. Hate to say it….right here we are supposed to get to 80 degrees this afternoon….but not last thru the weekend…colder tomorrow. Stay warm.
I set my coffee up the night before, so that when I get up all I need to do is push the button. Makes life a lot easier.
Obama is going to have to spend an abundance of time in reverse. I assume/hope someone is making a list and checking it twice, because there’s so much sh*t to unearth and make right. Are burrowed neocons safe, or can they be unburrowed?
We do that most nights, but I forgot last night and Mr. ReddHedd didn’t catch the missing coffee either. SIGH Sucks when your caffeine is late…
Tell me about “colder” where you are. Where are you, in fact?
Way to go…he did that sooo early in his term. Get it done. Transparency.
Do we need an entirely new department?
The National Department of Unburrowing?
Yes. Creepy, isn’t it? But not surprising.
Condi has really twisted herself into a pretzel. Better keep her away from the chimp.
who better to oversee the privacy of the ordinary person than private industry. what could possible go wrong?
You may laugh if I told you “colder”; Im a wimp about weather…That’s Austin, TX.
Or not. Think about it. *g*
Two birds with one pretzel.
I do must say, this is the longest two some odd months I have ever lived and I don’t remember this amount of time ver taking so long since the first time I remember waiting for my birthday and this is taking longer
one good thing about this time going so slow since the election, I feel as if my life is that much longer
I’m here in Austin as well. So tired of this warm>cold>warm>cold>freezing>warm>hot>cold>freezing>warm stuff already.
Actually headed to Padre Island before long to stay for a few days with friends who winter there. They think it will be good for me. :-)
Crunch!
Would that be warmonwarmoff?
Funny about the time…a combination of the let-down after the campaign excitement and the eagerness for a Bush Good by, I guess. Almost holding my breath.
Fantastic….I bet it will be as well. Warm, at the water. Good for you.
Exactly. ;)
Yes, I think back to those nice criminals who were given access to people’s private financial records in Miami to pretend to be loan officers when really they were scamming people to get access to their information to run an identity theft ring. And then I say to myself, “What COULD possibly go wrong when you merge the public interest with greedy, unprincipled asshats?” Hmmmmm….
Here’s the end of the cyber-security slipper slope:
If it’s pro-Israel, it’s fine. If it’s anti-Israel, it’s a terror threat, a hate crime, and you’re going to prison.
warmonoff — a Russian politician?
Think of all of the potential profit centers. So mr. insurance co. you want to know about john Qs DNA. I can get that for you cheap.

If Obama were wise he’d telegraph loud and clear to industries expecting these last-minute lagniappes that they shouldn’t count their chickens. So far I’m hearing crickets.
What a great word!!
Is it a great word…sounds of New Orleans!!
Or Montreal…
Thanks for the reminder…I just went back into some email from a couple of weeks ago to show the Mr. a request from a bank who wanted me to update my personal information for them. But, I don’t have an account with them. Sent me the request twice, with a high priority exclamation point.
Yeah. Right. I deleted it without opening it. Wondering if I should report them to someone.
Happy New Year, Redd!
Happy New Year, Pups…
I’m not holding my breath on Obama reversing Bush’s abuses… after his FISA vote, my confidence remains low…
If there are plans to do something broadcasting intent and/or strategies would give more opportunities to obstruct.

Heya — long time, no type! Happy new year to you, too. Hope all is well…
Har har. I was waiting for your imput, funnylady.
I’m hearing crickets, too — have some feelers out, will let y’all know if anyone gets back to me with anything.
Down stream markets! Nothing peccant.
things are “well enough”, Redd…
the Peanut must be getting big now!
Omygosh, sister! How are you? I’ve missed you. Hope things are well with you and your pups.
well next time report it here
it’s through the FTC
*waving to OldCoastie*
missed you too, demi… I’m ok – but working way too hard.
The pups are good and sleeping on the couch – unfortunately, they occupy most of it…
waving back…
*waves*
Frankly, I see this as good news. I’d rather be wasting my money on bits and bytes than on bombs — which, unfortunately, appear to be the only two choices when it comes to what happens to companies that have ALWAYS had their packages stimulated. Wouldn’t it be nice if they built light-rail trams or green buses for mid-sized cities instead?

She is, and loving every minute of kindergarten this year. Can’t believe how quickly they grow up. SIGH
Just heard that Ms Rice, that’s SOS, dontchaknow, is working constantly to settle things for Israel, Palestine, and “broader ME”…but not going there. Does that give you all a lot of hope? Maybe my New Year resolution should to be less sceptical. Cheers. Guess it took her about 8 years to get started.
Quick — someone tell her there’s a shoe sale at the Prada in Tel Aviv…
Thanks. If I get another request, I’ll go there.
I know better than to use the internet for personal/financial info.
Should we tell her how to throw it? Thanks for the chuckle. She’ll be showing up.
bummer. i thought maybe there was some reason for your last sentence.
LOL!
i will be so glad to see those jokers gone.
Good Morning everyone…… Can you believe that we will have our third day in the 70’s……My sister came down for a week to visit…… haven’t seen her in a couple of years….
Well….. find out Monday if the Interlukin is working……..
She did say she was working with all her partners. *g*

5 is particularly astonishing… my computer lab is in the Kindergarten building… at the beginning of the school year – everywhere I look – BABIES… little teeny-tiny, itty bitties… they come back after Christmas all big and smart and really, REALLY good at school…
of course, all the 5th graders will now be taller than me… YIKES!
(((katymine)))
sending good thoughts your way and hoping that the pac-men are doing their stuff.
Well, this press conference on the Israeli – Palestinian Conflict is a total waste of time, in my opinion.
BS!
You all have a great day…I must find my way to work. I usually try to leave about the time SD signs off, and he has been gone quite a while. Cheers. I keep waiting for the good news out of MN. Enjoy the day.
Cyber Security……. I’d like someone to take Identity theft seriously….. Year before last I had mine compromised three times in three months…..
I wouldn’t bother….there are a bazillion of those “phishes” — Some of them even appear to come from an entity you may interact with, such as your bank or credit union, PayPal or eBay, or your e-mail service provider. I work at a university, and those things also are sent masquerading as communications from the IT organization. A reputable establishment won’t ever ask for personal info via e-mail. Just delete and ignore them.
((((Katymine))))
wOOt!! You’re back!!!
(((Monday))) Will be thinkin’ about you, lady.
Bye, RB. I’m off and running also. Have a great day, pups.
The first time I was in SoCa where I used my debit card to buy groceries and a short time later someone used my debit card to buy $900 of stuff at walmart……. thankfully BofA knows I never shop at walmart and never purchase large items on my debit card AND I was and had been going to SoCa frequently……. so how did they get my pin?
When I think of it there was a lady sitting on a bench near the BofA ATM at the airport when I took out cash…… Did she have some kind of reader, camera or what?
OR
Was it someone at the SoCa grocery store?
Crossing all available fingers for a good report, and sending some good vibes your way to help out. Do take care and let us know what you hear…
hey CHS –
I’m in the odd position of wondering just how much to spill. I work for a large Federal agency, in IT, and we’ve been fighting much of the implementation of the National Cyber Security Initiative for the last year. Let me put it in the shortest possible form: the proposed solution will cost the taxpayers a huge amount of money, seriously compromise their privacy in a number of protected areas (including access to information protected by HIPPA), and not provide the “security” from cyber attack and intrusion that’s alleged to be developed.
Not to pull down the tin foil hat too far on my head, the Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee is — wait for it — Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT). Oh yes, one more reason to strip him of his chairmanship.
I can email you if you want more information, and bread crumbs.
I would love it, but not if it’s going to compromise anything for you. If there are crumbs you can leave me that won’t get you in hot water, e-mail me at ReddHedd AT firedoglake DOT com. Thanks!
huge thanks, scory: stay safe!
