According to the Israeli paper Ha’aretz, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni made a short visit to Paris on Thursday, after French president Sarkozy proposed a humanitarian cease-fire:

Reiterating Israel’s rejection of the 48-hour humanitarian cease-fire proposal, Livni said "there is no humanitarian crisis in the Strip, and therefore there is no need for a humanitarian truce."

In her remarks to reporters, Livni said Israel had been careful to protect the civilian population and had kept the humanitarian situation in Gaza "completely as it should be".

"The crossings are open, more than it used to be before the military operation," she said.

For the first days of the attacks on Gaza, Israel did not allow aid workers from outside into Gaza though many organizations including Amnesty International made specific requests to allow them in:

“Humanitarian workers, journalists and human rights monitors are urgently needed to assess needs, report violations and publicize the reality of the situation on the ground,” said Amnesty International.

As GorillasGuides posted at Oxdown, Israeli human rights groups are collecting reliable reports and publishing them at a new site "Harm to Civilians During the Fighting in Gaza and Southern Israel." MarkfromIreland also provided more links here.

Perhaps Foreign Minister Livni should consult with some of the organizations of her own citizens about that non-existent humanitarian crisis.

Meanwhile, Israel has offered to allow foreign nationals to leave Gaza tomorrow. In addition, Israel has also closed off the West Bank:

Israel’s defense establishment on Thursday night decided to seal off the West Bank for two days, as the ongoing deadly assaults in Gaza Strip has strained relations between Jews and Arabs.

The general closure, ordered by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, starts at midnight Thursday and ends on Saturday night, said the army in a statement, adding that entries to Israel of those in need of humanitarian or medical aid will be authorized by a special liaison office.

Both of these developments point to an imminent ground invasion.

Tonight, the air strikes by F16s and Apaches continue along with reports that Israel is using large mortars to hit locations in Gaza. Sameh Habeeb of Gaza Today emails that today:

Israeli F16s bombed the Palestinian legislative Council. The air raid destroyed half of the premises and caused massive damage in some of the neighboring houses. Israeli heavy artillery takes part in the military operation by hitting many targets in Gaza. Many parts in the eastern areas of Gaza were shelled. Israeli heavy F16s’ rockets destroyed the Agricultural College of Bait Hanon, north of Gaza Strip.

Neither fuel, nor gasoline nor Benzin in Gaza. Power cuts up to 21 hours. All aspects of life are not longer available in Gaza. Neither spare parts nor Gasoline available to operate pumps of fresh water. A great number of Palestinians don’t have an easy access for fresh drinking water.
