My year is starting with new wheels under my slide seat. Tried out today was like floating on a cloud…smooth smooth smooth stroking. The catch and recovery one fluid motion now. The Green Zone transfer is mandated by a security deal between the United States and Iraq signed last month. The “status of forces” agreement, which goes into effect Thursday, will replace the U.N. resolution that has given the U.S. government enormous power since the invasion. The agreement says Iraq may request help from the U.S. military “for limited and temporary support” in providing security for the Green Zone, but it leaves the details to be worked out by committee members who were recently appointed.

Speaking privately, U.S. officials said they will try to make their presence in the Green Zone less conspicuous in coming days. But they will remain in charge of issuing badges that grant varying levels of access into the area. They said they will not immediately dismantle a vast security apparatus that includes hundreds of Peruvian and Ugandan guards, body-scanning machines, bomb-sniffing dogs and surveillance cameras.

While working in Australia for a little bit, I proposed to my better half right in the middle of the Sydney Harbour Bridge specifically because it kicks off the New Year each year, and would make each New Year’s that much more meaningful when we see the pics or video. And it was on Valentine’s Day no less! It’s worked very well each year since back here in the States.

Very strong indeed! In 30 years of teaching I only had one student who wore it and I could smell her walking up the stairwell from the back of a large classroom half-way down the hall. Heaven help ya if she’d taken the elevator a hour earlier…..the scent lingered. Turned me off the stuff forever and ever. :-(

I know a woman who buys very strong (180 proof?) vodka and mixes it w/ a tiny amount of patchouli oil in a perfume atomizer, and she smells wonderful. Not like patchouli oil at all (which I used to like) but like a rare, expensive perfume, very good.

Asa certified DFH, Patchouli oil can be a good thing if used sparingly or like sticking your head in a diesel tank if used for maximum effect.

I’ll never forget my first trip to NYC.. Eastern Air went bankrupt and sold 49.00 RT SF to La Guardia tickets.. We jumped on a plane the next day… I called in sick for the first time in my life… drunk from a Manhattan phone booth two days in a row. Carried a guitar my grandfather gave me over my shoulder through every bar and other place we went.

Landed in SF on the third morning just in time to have the super shuttle drop me off on Haight Ashbury, around the corner from work.. so the boss wouldn’t see me.

We had a ball. If I didn’t live in SF at the time i don’t think I would have left Manhattan.

Obama, Pelosi to Discuss Scope of Economic Package

President-elect Barack Obama will meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Monday as Congress prepares to reconvene and debate a massive recovery plan for the nation’s struggling economy, according to Democratic sources.

The face-to-face meeting between two of the nation’s top Democrats will be one of the president-elect’s first acts after relocating his family to a hotel in Washington over the weekend.

Sources said Obama and Pelosi will discuss the scope and timing of the economic recovery package, which Obama has said will be his first priority upon being sworn into office. Pelosi has said her goal is to have the legislation on the new president’s desk and ready to be signed on Jan. 20.

But that schedule appears increasingly likely to slip, as Republicans and conservative Democrats are raising concerns about the impact on the federal deficit of spending hundreds of billions on an array of projects with little vetting by Congress. Lawmakers now expect a spending package of between $675 billion and $775 billion.
