In what will likely be one of his last NY Times columns, Bill Kristol demonstrates that in a "(P)inch", he can always find something to delude himself with, you can almost see his pants dropping and one-hand typing.
For one thing, there will be the invocation, delivered by Rick Warren. I suspect he’ll be careful to say nothing pro-life or pro-traditional-marriage — but we conservatives have already gotten more than enough pleasure from the hysterical reaction to his selection by the tribunes of the intolerant left. And having Warren there will, in fact, be a welcome reminder of the strides the evangelical movement and religious conservatives (broadly speaking) have made in recent decades.
Yeah, the GOP has now established a tenuous foothold in only one region of the country, the South, thanks to this tactic. Good job.
Bill Kristol, making NY Times editorial pages stick together for nearly 365 days.

A Sunday morning without BK (”Home of the Whopper”) is a far better Sunday Morning.
And besides, aren’t there any, you know, intelligent conservatives out there?
What fools in Canada are paying MR. PNAC to speak?
Mornin’, gang -
I don’t usually read bk’s tripe; today’s column is a prime example of why. :-(
Everyone will remember the little Iraqi boy who lost both of his arms due to
US bombing in March 2003. Here he is at almost 18.

A suicide car bomb blast near a voter registration site killed 16 people, 14 of them children, and wounded 58 in southeastern Afghanistan on Sunday morning, according to a senior police official and the U.S. military.
The U.S. military released this photo of the blast near a voter registration site.
A Taliban spokesman said one of his group’s fighters carried out the attack.
Hysterical post, Attaturk, once again!
I crack up knowing the right wing of this country thinks it’s shit still doesn’t stink.
Some say George W Bush is a miserable piece of shit..

linky is ill.
Good morning, pups. It’s Kristol and Krugman. That wretched excuse for a human being has vomited up something called “George, Abe, Rick and Barack,” in which he says he looks forward to Barack Obama’s inauguration with a surprising degree of hope and good cheer. So do I, you asshole, so do I… Prof. Krugman is concerned about “Fifty Herbert Hoovers,” and says that even as Washington tries to rescue the economy, the nation will be reeling from the actions of 50 Herbert Hoovers — state governors who are slashing spending in a time of recession.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. 22 days and counting. Have a good day… I’m shuffling off to the kitchen to get another cup of tea and ponder what I’m going to bring for lunch today.
Kristol is an idiot! I was trying to think of a more mature way of to express my opinion of him but after reading this comment, I couldn’t.
Bah, humbug. Those of us who dislike finger-wagging nanny-state-nagging liberalism relish the prospect of President Barack Obama sneaking a cigarette on the second floor of the White House while rereading Harry V. Jaffa’s great work on Lincoln, “Crisis of the House Divided
Anyone who equates smoking and liberalism is an idiot.
Morning Marion. Your description of Kristol is much better than mine, Thanks.
I’m not going to miss the NYT when it finally dies its long overdue death. Fuck ‘em.
Wow you got “mature” and “Kristol” in the same sentence. Kudos to Marion who, for the benefit of us all, reads Bk’s spoutings… she is one brave woman and she makes one heck of a breakfast. (more hot chocolate please!)
and the there’s:
“For generations we have accepted as truth that we all need banks, and the loans provided by banks, to survive. We have, with nary a hint of doubt or a moment of protest, accepted as fact that a good credit rating is worth its weight in gold. We have marched toe-to-heel in a parade that has been choreographed by the plutocrats, marshaled by the aristocrats, and coordinated by the bureaucrats. For decades upon decades this has been our only reality, and we have come to trust it just as we trust that the apple into which we bite will be sweet and nourishing. But now, 2008, and in an instant, we have found our own Eden. The banks to which we once flocked, in which we placed out trust and our futures, that once appeared the pictures of health and good-living, have turned inside-out. We no longer recognize what we once did because the rotten underbelly has been exposed, the fetid intestines strewn on the floor at our feet. The smile of the carefully groomed bank manager, once trusted as benignly sincere, is now viewed with hostile contempt. He has become a thief, a toxin, a heartless zombie in an Armani suit.”
This is the sound of one hand typing we can all do without. Thanks for the inspired imagery.

Looking at preview..this one looks the same as the first..so here goes..if it fails..I give up ’cause I have no idea what I am doing wrong.
If you want a bit of a giggle, there’s always William Safire’s Office Pools. Here’s his 2008 office pool, in which he was, as usual, spectacularly wrong about almost everything. See what you think of his prognostications for 2009 in the new 2009 Office Pool.
Off to the salt mines…
darn…someone knows why cut and paste sometimes doesn’t work? I don’t ‘get’ it..help..
Darn it. It didn’t come through!
Maybe copy and paste would work better?
Kay I am sending you weather in the upper 40’s today but only if you are good.
Morning everyone. I don’t read Kristol (except here). He’s way too big of an ass. Nice to see he’s enjoying liberal angst. That’s all he has left.
I wonder why Obama didn’t invite a racist who rants against interracial marriage? Just in the interest of being inclusve.
LOL *handing you a bouquet of flowers & tons of candy* Is that good enough?
Nomolos, last night the snow fell off the garage roof in front of the gate, so I woke up this morning in fear that I couldn’t get out (gate opens in and with 2 feet of snow piled in front of it…which is more like 4 feet…we can’t get out!). So, in case you were wondering what I was doing at 6am this morning, I proceeded to shovel and beat the huge pile with an old softball bat to break it up before the cold wind froze it solid. LOL
This reaction by Kristol is exactly WHY we want Warren to speak. There are huge under-educated, underemployed, highly religious swaths of the country that believe his crap. Remember, a large majority of Americans go to church and here this anti-gay stuff all the time. So bringing in Warren is very important to making them feel good about Obama so we can get things done. Remember how much you hated Bush from day one? Well, lets try not to have the same feeling for Obama so we can get more done.
More sops to the right please, so we can move the real power of the government to the left.
Is this an argument that society works best for the benefit of the greatest number, when there is no such thing as credit?
Yeah, the GOP has now established a tenuous foothold in only one region of the country, the South, thanks to this tactic.
Sorta. Lost FL & NC & VA this year. Will be interesting to see what happens when the candidate is not black. Even so, the D’s have made strides in those 3 states and I guess GA to some extent. But the Rs are still strong in the middlewest plain type states -NE, the Dakotas, WY, Montana, OK, KS. That’s what? About 14 electoral votes? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
OSHA Less Active Under Bush
Ya think?
Too funny!!! I made so sure that I did not do that on my second try; that it was still on my mind as I typed.
Laughter is the best medicine they say…even if it is at myself.
I can’t agree. You’re obviously not gay. Nor am I. But I wouldn’t feel kindly towards having someone up there who had worked to deny me my civil rights. And insulted me in the process.
If by candy you mean chocolate you are a winner!
A garage, you have a garage… holy moly! We leave our cars out in the weather so that they are cleansed by the snow. We also leave them right by the road so there is a lot less to shovel although today we have real green grass showing where, just four days ago there was 2 feet of snow. Gotta love New England weather…..keeps that old softball swing in practice!
A bunch of us progressives don’t do the hate thing that easily. Never hated him, only pointed out his inhumanity and his propensity to rip the constitution to shreds.
A lot of the christian fundy crowd have hated Obama for generations now.
Who would you recommend Obama invite? Warren agrees with Obama on almost everything but the gay agenda, and is a liberal by evangelical standards.
Who would you invite to make the right happy?
Oh well, have a great day all. I have to go to the Doc as spouse person may have broken her foot.
Thanks Attaturk for bringing us the wisdom of Kristol.
Hate has both the traditional old school meaning as well as meaning more like the old school dislike, but lets not get into a Socratic argument.
If Obama is going to govern the whole country he has to do some things that upset us, and I am actually for that – I think it helps with the real agenda. The lefts reaction to Warren has played very well for Obama in red states. Thems the facts.
one last try the old fashioned way…Preview shows it looking the same as the first two.. bad sign..
http://www.democraticundergrou…..15;4727200
Jeremiah Wright?
Seriously, are you saying that we have to give the hate-mongers a platform to be inclusive? What would your reaction be if you were gay?
I can barely write in english, so, you won’t be getting any Socratic arguments from moi.
Where are those facts from, by the way.
I swear it is not me..I typed in the url and checked it..
If I were gay I would not be thrilled, but I would keep my eye on the ball. Warren really does not matter, what matters is DOMA and DADT and if this helps get those changed (and it does) then I would smile at the great political move that Warren is.
Keep your eye on the ball, this is not about Jan. 20 – but about laws, and judicial appointments, and long term change. If Warren helps with that (and he does) then this is a tempest in a teapot. If Obama somehow becomes a rightie then we have a problem, I am not worried.
This is also politics, and gays were Obama’s worst demographic group as compared to Kerry. Gays were 7% LESS likely to vote for Obama than Kerry. The only other demo he lost in was the over 65 crowd.
Have you ever been the object of bigotry. It hurts terribly. I’m from a town of mostly Italians. You wouldn’t believe the idiotic things people have said to me. The first remark (seared in my memory) was “you’re from —-, you don’t look tough”. So, I get what the gays are feeling with Warren given such an exalted place at the innauguration. They’re feeling hurt and betrayed.
Here is the link to the demographic group fact: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com…..ually.html
The fact that the Warren pick is playing well to evangelicals, and they are very pleasantly surprised by it comes from anecdotal evidence. My mother who is an evangelical (we can’t pick family, right) and from other friends who live in MO and AR. I used to live in the Bible belt, I left as it drove me nuts as a liberal – but these folks really eat this Warren crap up and if the dems want to be a true winer long term, and keep the repubs bottled in the crazy south, then we need some of these people. We can get them, they agree with us on education and fairness issues and most are not racists. They vehemently disagree on abortion, but if we do this right we can win the gay argument – but we need to bring them in with sugar.
This is where I disagree. Just the opposite, it gives Warren added stature.
I think Obama felt betrayed by the gay community on election day, they were his worst demographic group.
YES, exactly. It give Warren added stature in the evangelical community, and Warren is the farthest evangelical there is. This takes power away from Dobson and the rest and moves the country left – it is political genius.
Even Pat Robertson, freak that he is, has commented positively about Obama and pleasantly surprised he is.
This is great for dems long term – and attacks repubs right at their core. This is genius ladies and germs, so lets just let it play out.
Sorry first sentence in 47 should read:
“YES, exactly. It give Warren added stature in the evangelical community, and Warren is the farthest left evangelical there is. This takes power away from Dobson and the rest and moves the country left – it is political genius.”
I’m crying ‘uncle’ here. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
I mean look at the Kristol article, it is great for Obama with the 47% of the voters that did not vote for him. Kristol was a nutbag Palin supporter – getting him to say positive things about Obama is stunningly good.
Kristol and even Hume have been positive on Obama on Fox News Sunday – again, great political capital is getting built to be used later for our agenda.
Now, to the shower. See all later.
Here’s a howto for ya.
Open the desired site page in another tab.
Go the url address block below the menu bar
Click on the url, it should then be highlighted
Right click on the url, a drop down menu will appear, click on “Copy”
Come back to the Lake. Put your cursor where you want the link to appear. Right click. From the drop down menu click “Paste.” Viola.
We’ll do the link icon bit next time around.
Don’t feed the trolls.
If you are implying that I am a troll, you need to get a life. Trolling is posting without a point of view and not having facts to back it up.
If you guys can even get along with more political folks on the left, firedoglake will die a slow death of being ignored.
Janes complete BS on Carolyn Kennedy brought me here, as I found it horrendous that Jane was attacking the candidate that was furthest left and best for our agenda. Your guys are blinded by ideology. Don’t do that, look where blind ideology has gotten us.
That’s actually not true. You showed up for the first time under your current handle on 11/30, when the Kennedy appointment had not yet been discussed here. Then you showed up again yesterday at Emptywheel, where you claimed to have been reading and commenting here regularly for many years.
Google. It’s what’s for breakfast.
Troll.
Bravo Zulu.
I joined on and was in one discussion on 11/30. I have been reading the posts here and at KOS for years. I am a very active poster at fivethiortyeight under a different handle. I left firedoglake and returned after the Carolyn Kennedy stuff, I did not comment because the threads were so long and off topic by the time I got here.
I most certainly DID NOT say I had been posting here for years. LEarn to read.
I am not a troll, but I am a prgamatic liberal who actually wants the agenda to move forward. You know, like the folks over at MoveOn that decided to come inside the tent where things get done instead of staying out here in the wilds and just complaining.
Getting things done requires compromise, sorry for that, but it does.
LOL! If you cant talk to other liberals, what do you expect to get done? Do you really think you can walts into DC and just pass all the laws YOU want.
blah, blah, blah
In my view.
You people can’t really debate can you. Do you know the facts underlying your belief system and the positives and negatives to the employment of the system in the political world, the economy, and the daily lives of people – both now and into the future and why you are making compromises of one area/temporal period over another?
Are do you just want to drink beer, fart, and complain, Mr. BeerFart.
Do I see a troll pattern emerging?
eh. Breakfast time. I should concentrate on feeding my family instead…
Dear God,
Not the Google.
Now I remember why I stopped using this alias for so long.
I was going to comment on the south (I had so much hope for the south when I was growing up). Remembering all my stupid comments over the years took the wind right out of me. I’ve never been a troll though. Until this year I was always too wasted to be anything to anyone.
Sigh.
So much for New Orleans. They killed my city.
Good Morning, The Israeli/Pales. story is so sad; what are we doing? Caught a short summary of Ms. Bush interview. She really did not like the shoe-thrower. Funny, it was alright for her beloved to bomb the life out of thousands of human beings, but do not toss at shoe at the stupid W. Laura, how do you define justice or fairness? Really a bad news day as all the killing continues. Maybe you and the Pres. can spend your time in New Orleans mending some of the damage that you have wrought. Give up the SMU libary and invest that money is good works, restoration of all you have destroyed. The last 8 years have brought terrible shame and damage to this country; you may try to deny the facts for the rest of your life. From time to time some evidence and truth will break through. I am sorry the denial so rampant in dysfunctional families had to be so tragically on display in the history of the last 8 years.
I meant to say how much I love that gentle picture of the cat. Thanks for sharing. ;)
No. And I don’t say this lightly.
For years, I listened to ‘wingnut idiots, thinking (good Liberal that I am) it’s just this guy [or gal] who’s a jackass; it’s a fluke that the only representatives of conservative views I ever see/hear/read are well-dressed morons; someplace, somewhere, are the real conservative voices, the brainy ones who can represent their side with cogent, thoughtful arguments.
I found exactly one: Do you remember that conservative blonde on The West Wing, the one Sorkin dreamed up (I’m guessing) to offer a counterpoint to the general liberal drift of the show? (The actress is now on CSI Miami; I forget her and her character’s name.)
Anyway, she’s the sole public representative of conservative thought with more than two brain cells to click together–and she’s (a) fictional, and (b) dreamed up by a liberal.
Yes, character Ainsley Hayes played by Emily Procter certainly was a work of art, wasn’t she!
