Israel’s attack today came at the time of day when, as Fikr Shallpoot, a health worker and resident in Gaza told the BBC, children leave the morning school session and the afternoon students arrive. (Please listen to this report, it is very informative but sadly the BBC does not allow embedding) At least 200 Gazans were with more than 700 wounded. One target was the Gaza City police station where a graduation ceremony was taking place (this is raw footage from the aftermath of the attack and is graphic):
And Israel has announced this is just the beginning:
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Saturday that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will deepen and widen its offensive in the Gaza Strip as much as needed. Barak also vowed during an afternoon in a press conference that it’s "time to fight," adding that "tough times lay ahead." The Israeli minister explained "there is a time for cease-fires and a time to fight, and now is the time to fight."
Israel is also launching a PR campaign to gain international support for its actions, claiming they are simply protecting themselves. Viewing the videos of Gazan reactions to the air strikes, it is clear that rather than diminishing attacks on Israel, these air strikes will simply further inflame the situation and harden Hamas’ resolve. As Hamas spokesman Al-Nunu said:
from the midst of the air strikes and the destroyed government buildings and from the midst of body parts we declare the renewal of our holding onto our people’s rights and our rejection of any political concession and the rejection of the conditions of the quartet and our refusal to recognize the legitimacy of the occupier. We will not give in to their demands."
Today’s attacks were not unexpected and even Israel’s Defense Minister admits that they have been planning and preparing for months. In fact, Ha’aretz is now reporting on the months of "deception", the "long-term preparation, careful gathering of information, secret discussions, operational deception and the misleading of the public " used to plan this attack. After provoking a renewal of rocket attacks, Israel tightened the existing blockade to keep all supplies out of Gaza as well as foreign journalists – and then began a series of raids and small incursions which inevitably led to more rocket attacks. It’s very hard to see today’s actions as anything more than the next phase of an Israeli government plan to provoke Hamas and use the resulting rocket attacks as a pretext for a full blown attack on Gaza.
Right before the attacks, Gazan blogger Sameh Akram Habeeb wrote at Gaza Today:
Time is running out in Gaza and mass starvation looms as Gaza\’s skies are further darkened with threats of an Israeli military incursion. As a journalist, peace activist, and one of the hundreds of thousands of Gazans who are being collectively punished by Israel, I urge those who read this to appeal their governments to hold Israel accountable to international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, article 33 of which forbids the collective punishment of a civilian population.
Please answer Sameh’s appeal and contact the White House, the Obama transition at Change.gov and your representatives demanding an end to this attack.

i hate this
It is horrific.
they learned EXTREMELY well under the auspices of HITLERS NAZI terrorists
BLITZKREIG for CHILDREN ARGH@#$%^&$%^&!!!
Drunk drivers, robbers, pimps and drug dealers killed more Israelis last month than did Gazan rockets.
The Israeli police were powerless to stop the drunk drivers, robbers, pimps, and dealers from killing Israelis. How could the ill-armed, bunkered down Palestinian security forces have done better at keeping violence in check than do Israel’s finest law enforcement professionals, with the best communications and security tools my money can buy available to them?
Israel’s final solution to the Palestine problem.
Attack Hamas. Hmmm. Because regime change has worked so very, very well in the ME?
ET – I’m digging again but I believe that the one death today is the first actual Israeli casualty from the rocket attacks – attacks which only restarted after Israel broke the cease fire by continuing the blockade and by an incursion and killing of several Gazans.
Does your information match mine?
you got it
and this brazen whore,is the worst of the lot..imo

Pure evil.
Why don’t they just get it over with and carpet-bomb every fucking living thing, animal, and plant?
Well we may not have any satisfaction from our own government regarding this unspeakably cruel charade but it does look like other governments are losing patience. That’s some progress.
If only the US stands with Israel and the US is stretched too thin to do anything but lie, I’d say Israel will pretty much be on their own.
I can’t see how these PR tactics can continue to provide cover when the attack comes hours after the blockade was lifted only briefly and then closed again.
It’s got to be obvious to anyone that the internal politics in Israel are not making much sense these days and will continue to deteriorate.
I believe that it may be the first actual death inside Israel from a Gaza rocket since July. It is hard to get accurate information on recent Israeli crime and traffic fatalities, but I recall back in 2004 I was doing research, and it seemed the combination of murders and drunk driving homicides per month was around 12 or more.
It looks – from the Ha’aretz link http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1050426.html
that Livni, Barak and Olmert were all on board and began planning this 6 months ago. I think the idea that the various Israeli parties are positioning over this is not the full story … they seem horribly unified.
“Can’t you see, you imbecile! We have a ready-made opportunity to build on the Fear Factor! We need to drive home to the American people how dangerous this world is nowadays! Raise the terror alert to red, immediately!”
Rumsfeld, May 2003
We’ll keep coddling these sick Nazi murderers right up to the day they start WW3 and the planet is a smoldering cinder. Hell, we’ll even keep coddling them after that.
Horror. It never changes. The faces and the sounds are the same.
Clearly the Israelis are pursuing this course because it worked so well in Lebanon with Hezbollah. I can’t imagine what they think they can “gain” from this.
They have been claiming this would be a short and narrowly targeted attack – but are now admitting it will be long and “deep” … they did not learn.
The blockade seems of a piece with the attack – they don’t want the news to get out from the Palestinian side, because that would prove the lies on the Israeli side.
F*ck AIPAC and their heavily-promoted idea that Israel is always the innocent victim.
The Israeli leadership is reacting to political pressure from within, not attempting to actually fix a combat- or war-related problem. That is what they have been seeing coming for months, rather than some huge Hamas boogey man, ready to stomp the Israelis. Spend a week reading the comments to the I-P issue articles at Haaretz, and you might undertsand better. Or DailyKos, for that matter. Most recent comment at their huge diary on this today:
Israel’s long running campaign to expunge Palestine and declare all of what was the old British Palestine Mandate as being under Israel’s flag is now shown in full again.
Israel plainly for a very long time has been playing a sickening cynical and black hearted game of playing the abused victim, playing the long suffering good occupier and playing the seeker of peace when it clearly is not any of these.
That WashingtonDC has been sucked into this charade and we Americans are paying in taxes to aid Israel and sponsoring Israeli militarism is a first rank outrage.
Americans condemned the Imperial Japanese and German Nazis for what they did to civilian populations in 1930’s and early 1940’s.
That Americans condone this barbaric Israeli conduct now is in war crimes zone.
Really, why doesn’t Israel just drop the charade and kill them all?
Bev Wright upstairs with a special year-end wrap-up for Book Salons.
The US government, with your tax dollars, is responsible for this. The US stands between every resolution against Israel from the UN. The US government funds Israel. Rev. Wright’s words are appropriate here..God damn America.
Read from Gaza.

israel gettin in it’s licks while Clusterfuck is still in office… murderous bastards
Since the beginning, Israel has been working to destroy the Palestinians. The history of this is ugly. Every time someone has tried to stop it, the US has stepped in and vetoed any action against Israel. That’s at both the UN and ICC.
Bush just posthumously pardoned the guy who got illegal planes into Israel which threw the ‘war’ in 1948 to the Israelis. The US helped created and finance Israel from day one.

There is a big push on for him to pardon the spy, Jonathan Pollard. Stand by..Jan 20 is a long ways away.

Thanks so much for sending along the Free Gaza links – they are a great resource!
Guess I owe you a drink. :)
Ding.
LinkTV’s most recent broadcast is 24 Dec. I wonder what that’s all about.
New question for American supporters of Israel: Exactly how bad an act would Israel have to commit before you would withdraw your support? (The answer “nuking Gaza” is disqualified on grounds of hyperbole.)
The UN Human Rights Rapporteur was thrown out of Israel when he called the situation a Crime Against Humanity. The US allowed the Israelis to do this. Omar was just in Washington a month ago. Not doubt this massacre was discussed and approved. Israel and the US work in tandem.

Where is Pastor Warren? The Palestinians lived on this land walked by Jesus. Where are all the right wing evangelicals? This land is Palestinian, not Israeli. There was no Israel sitting there 2,000 years ago. The League of Nations Mandate of 1922 was responsible for Israel being formed….not God.
If Obama defends Israel on this atrocity, you will all know what his foreign policy is going to be like.
They are the best source because the reports are real time reports, pictures, etc. The first aid ship lost radio contact when the Israeli’s jammed their communications..we all knew and waited for hours to find out if they had been bombed, or something similar. When I say real time..I mean real time. These are the brave people who initially broke the blockade of Gaza..for those of you who did not know.
I have seen this and never known what it means. Explanation for the “drink’, please.
When someone posts essentially what another posted just before the latest poster tells the earlier s/he owes them a beverage. It can be variously worded.
oh..oh..seems to me that I owed a drink as recently as a few hours, ago! Over the few months that I have commented here…might owe hundreds of drinks. All of you now consider yourselves drunk…and then the debt is paid in full.
“The Arab world reacted in shock to the attacks on the Gaza Strip on Saturday with scattered protests around the region and Egypt summoning the Israeli ambassador to express its condemnation of the air strikes.”
Huh, I missed that headline when the Paki’s attacked Mumbai?
Yup Israel, keep attacking unarmed civilians and your deep well of American support will ebb away. Remember last year?
No doubt the Chimp approved this as one of his many goodbye gifts to President Obama.
Guessing from the income disparity between them, and this isn’t intended as a slight against Palestine, but the Israelis are probably better schooled as a whole than the Palestinians, and maybe this is why they seem to have a more smoothly oiled PR machine than the Palestinians do. Undoubtedly the Israelis try to stay on message, and promote the idea that they’re doing these kinds of offenses defensively, as a necessary evil rather than a simple blood thirst.
But even supposing that Israel’s defensive posture is nothing but posturing, is there any reason for us to feel sympathetic toward the Palestinians, other than the fact that they’re the underdogs in this conflict? I don’t mean to suggest that the Israelis aren’t crass, ideological religious nuts, because they all might be, but there are a lot more suicide bombers coming out of Palestine than Israel. Maybe that’s a sign of how bad things are for the Palestinians, and we should pity them, that they can’t even afford jet fighters to kill people with, so they have to send their bombs by martyr instead. At the same time, if an elected party of theirs is advocating suicide as a religious duty against their enemies, aren’t we vulnerable to that also for its PR value, even if we concede that Israel’s PR has more finesse? Holy self-destruction, carried out at the hands of a powerful enemy, seems to have been an attractive symbol for the Christians, who make a big deal about J.C.’s martyrdom, and people around the world think that he can’t be a bad guy if he voluntarily gave his life for what is best.
If a political party is elected that advocates religious suicide against enemies, then, and experience shows that religious martyrdom is often an effective way to gain a sympathetic audience, then isn’t it possible that these attacks by Israel aren’t unprovoked, and since this provocation, in the past, tends to bring eventually the same response as always from Israel, is it impossible that some people might even invite this kind of thing? Again, this isn’t to accuse Israelis of being anything other than barbaric and outrageous, but I can’t see anything that shows Palestine as a whole to be acting any differently. Even if Israel is purely conducting an offensive war against Palestine, and more violently because better equipped, does anyone believe Palestine wouldn’t be making exactly the same offensive and bloody extermination against Israel if it was wealthy and Israel was poor?
If there’s no reason to advocate Palestine’s behavior as good or just, simply because Israel’s savage and unwarranted behavior is better armed, then why would Palestinians be any less sick than Israelis, after allowing (and, for fewer people, sending) rocket attacks against Israel since last week? Doesn’t that only makes Palestine every bit as contemptible as Israel, since these ongoing rocket attacks obviously aren’t intended to accomplish a military objective? Is anyone surprised that Israel responded to a week of rockets by killing a lopsided number of Palestinians? What else were these rocketeers hoping to gain, then, if not the slaughter of other Palestinians, followed by worldwide condemnation of Israel?
If anyone here reads this here it will be very unpopular. Israel never does anything right and muslims never do anything wrong. case closed
