Then stench was overwhelming, sometimes windblown as far as 30 miles away. I remember us taking husband’s parents on a drive to show them where he worked. I thought then that anything that stunk so badly could not be good for humans and animals breathing it.

Husband’s father remarked on the vast maize fields near the chemical plant and what a bountiful harvest the farmers would have. My husband said, “…that’s just for show. They’re not allowed to sell those crops on the open market. They’re contaminated. The company buys all the harvest.” (nobody knew what they did with it). The whole program was to keep the people living in the area from knowing the harmful effects of the pollutants produced.

They knew back as early as 1957; and they knew they had to cover it all up.

Who knows what sort of damage the insidious chemicals found in the spilled toxic sludge will cause?

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s office of investigations had accused Mr. White, 59 year old, of falsifying reports to the N.R.C. about the safety assurance program at the power authority’s closed Watts Bar nuclear plant near Spring City, Tenn.

The commission referred the case to the Justice Department last October, asserting that Mr. White had made a ”material false statement” when he certified in March 1986 that the Watts Bar reactor met Federal safety requirements.

At least TVA respects tradition: too bad the tradition is lying about TVA — and endangering our health and our descendants’ for generations to come.

No one, to my knowledge, has tested the fly ash containing concrete for radioactivity – or for emissions of toxins.

The challenge for anyone concerned about humanity’s future on this planet is the small short-term death toll and the challenge of getting government agencies to effectively monitor the subject population. Tests for toxic exposures are expensive and getting people to consent to them is not guaranteed.
