Sometimes, twisted things can be really, really funny. You put Steve Martin, Paul Simon and a classic Christmas tune together and…voila…eggnog and tequila!
Hiya Pups!
So happy to see you tonight. I’m in PA ready to head toward Philly. I need a little twisted silver bells where I’m headed toward the active adult community…
how’s everyone doing tonight? i’m supposed to get snow (yay) and then rain (good for those still trying to fly outta pdx). my great wood guy delivered half a cord for me today. he brought about half of that half upstairs and stacked it for me. gonna bring the other half cord monday but did not want me to run low or out before then.
last time he helped stack and i sent him away with extra as a thank you. today, i asked if he could bring some of it upstairs for me and he said no problem. i loaded about half into the storage area next to where he parked the trailer and he took half upstairs and stacked. it was a larger extra today – he did more and it is the season yanno. tomorrow, the letter carrier gets a card, as does my downstairs neighbor. is what i got them for.
This is the first time in my adult life that I haven’t “celebrated” Christmas. No cards, tree, lights, house decorations or presents……Not sure I feel Christmasie but will have a nice day with my kids. We plan to cook together Christmas day
depends on temps – i went through a cord the first 6 weeks i was here. i got a half cord from the new guy (gary) end of last month and still had about a week’s worth left. we did get down to 20 last week and i had that stove cranking out the heat.
It depends on the type of wood, the type of wood stove/fireplace….. If it is Oak/Alder mix, more hard wood and burns longer. I always get a mix of hard wood & soft wood. Fir and cedar burn hot and fast. It is good getting the fire going but for long term heating you need to mix the woods if you can. Just so you know….. my sole source of heat in 19 years of living in Oregon……..
if the fire goes out restart it with the Fir….. use a hatchet to cut smaller pieces and then when it is going good put a nice half or full round of Alder on top. It should burn nicely all evening. Get a nice bed of coals going before you go to bed and put another round of alder, crank down the stove and it should keep the house warm all night.
he brought me kindling too :) i admit there has been a learning curve to heating solely with wood. learning just how much to crank it down, etc. also learning the woods since i burned an oak/madrone mix at the creek.
2 cord of Almond and I may have burned 1/2 cord so far…. But it is an air tight Buck stove (well mostly air tight) I started it going by the second week of October and it hasn’t been totally out since. In the morning I just have to stir the big chunks and it roars back to life…
Evening Pups…Phone rang 5 minutes my cuz from 40 miles South of Denver Sais it was cold. I said a Colorado girl like you says it’s cold? I had to ask she said last weel -20 below 0 but it is 6 degrees now. Oh that is painful. I am around 45 outrside 59 inside rain may come in tonight and tommorow mid morn. Central Coast Ca. Keep some long johns around.
almond is great wood. the first couple weeks, i was burning with the door down and slid back under it and the screen in place. after not having a fireplace or stove at the vacation rental, i was enjoying the sights and smells of the fire.
now, sucka is closed up tight and only opened to toss in another log.
The other important thing is dry and/or seasoned wood. Wood that was cut just a few months ago and not allowed to dry/season is harder to burn and can cause creosote to build up. Dry wood is important as it takes a lot of energy in the woodstove to dry it out before it burns……..
We usually got next winters wood spring/summer to allow it time to season….. don’t get me going on delivered log loads where you have 10-20 logs to cut haul and stack…
My house in Arizona does NOT have a fireplace/woodstove…….
Carpenter ants live inside the wood and go dormant when cold, when stacked inside they wake up…… and infect your house…… work like termites but they fly…
As a kid my mother was stung by a scorpion which was brought in on/in the firewood….
Egg nog martini anyone?
I got the black eyed peas on the back burner. The black bean soup is already in the refridgerator. I am surrounded by hypocrits. Everything is normal. The garage is still leaking since I told the landlord a month ago…the roofer did come by and do something.
I feel like I am ready and set for the depression just worried about those who are still in LALA land.
Rowing 3 miles every day come rain or shine. Thw West coasters will have a dry spring if Farmer’s Almanac is correct…more drought. And our state government is in a $45 billion deficit. Gotta be strong for a few years.
I’ve stacked and split a few cords in my day, I’m aware that beaucoup critters can and do live in it… But, The porch is outside…! Suz is also right on the weight could be too much for her porch…! ;-)
Christy!
hahahahaha a holiday classic indeed
Digg it!
Hi Suzanne
Dugg!
Christy and Suz!
dugg thanks for opening it neuro
Firedoglake ROCKS!
Hi Suz…. and everyone else…
Hiya Pups!

Hey Suz!
Make that wood guy something nice.
i sent him away with a nice little extra and 3 starbucks gift cards for his teens for stocking stuffers. wanna keep that man happy (laughing)
Your wood guy stacks…… wow….. every time I got wood I would either unload the truck or they dumped it in one big pile in the yard….. that is a keeper
You think?
Let me rephrase…
Send him away with a tip.
No…
nevermind.
last time he helped stack and i sent him away with extra as a thank you. today, i asked if he could bring some of it upstairs for me and he said no problem. i loaded about half into the storage area next to where he parked the trailer and he took half upstairs and stacked. it was a larger extra today – he did more and it is the season yanno. tomorrow, the letter carrier gets a card, as does my downstairs neighbor. is what i got them for.
Sounds like he likes you anyway but that won’t hurt.;)
How come I never heard of this tape?
does that foot taste as good as it looks (laughing)
So how long does it take you to burn a cord?
This is the first time in my adult life that I haven’t “celebrated” Christmas. No cards, tree, lights, house decorations or presents……Not sure I feel Christmasie but will have a nice day with my kids. We plan to cook together Christmas day

christmas is about who you are with – not what where you are looks like.

today i got 1/2 cord alder – mon he brings 1/2 cord fir so i will have a good mix
looks like this is going to be a wood thread!
Maybe next time you can get him to stack the whole cord on the porch… No stairs for ya to negotiate…! ;-)
if the fire goes out restart it with the Fir….. use a hatchet to cut smaller pieces and then when it is going good put a nice half or full round of Alder on top. It should burn nicely all evening. Get a nice bed of coals going before you go to bed and put another round of alder, crank down the stove and it should keep the house warm all night.
But if you know this already……. just ignore me…..
shit, lol, i spilled ma Tabasco (shity spell check)!
I’ll never forget the xmas i got the LP of funky tut. good stuff
Love all u pups.
True Love!
he brought me kindling too :) i admit there has been a learning curve to heating solely with wood. learning just how much to crank it down, etc. also learning the woods since i burned an oak/madrone mix at the creek.
hey ct – both decks are old (but not as old as the house).
There is an insect hazard stacking wood next to the house especially carpenter ants
2 cord of Almond and I may have burned 1/2 cord so far…. But it is an air tight Buck stove (well mostly air tight) I started it going by the second week of October and it hasn’t been totally out since. In the morning I just have to stir the big chunks and it roars back to life…

In the winter…? ;-)
you in the car or holed up at a hotel?
Tell him about the weak knee. And give him an extra $30.00

Guaranteed to do the trick…! ;-)
i told him about the fake knee and bad back.
gasp… but what about those cool desert nights?
Carpenter ants live inside the wood and go dormant when cold, when stacked inside they wake up…… and infect your house…… work like termites but they fly…
As a kid my mother was stung by a scorpion which was brought in on/in the firewood….
Anyone seen the new Clint Eastwood movie?
Wood smoke bothers my asthma…… have the ash and particulate pollution…. hated having to depend ONLY on the wood stove for the ONLY source of heat……
Love my two part heat pump which keeps me nice and toasty…….. neat, clean and programmable….
npb – i don’t do movies and i would not see a clint one after you told me some of the stuff about his dastardly deeds down in carmel
Is it any good?
is it the same system that keeps ya cool in the summer?
some of skippy’s favorite xmas carols over @ skippy:
camryn manheim steamroller doing have you ever had fruitcake?
two stoned guys doing oh chronic tree
janice dickinson doing 12 days of christmas
some guy doing a barack obama christmas carol
don romano & andrew mack doing have a bowie/crosby christmas
not r. kelly doing out of the clauset
santa & the elves doing a christmas bohemian rhapsody

My brand new shiny new heat pump heats, cools and also runs a fan to move the air in the house…… just flip from one setting to the other……..
Egg nog martini anyone?

hey skippy – stick around and see what i put up for late late nite
and late late nite is upstairs
I’ve stacked and split a few cords in my day, I’m aware that beaucoup critters can and do live in it… But, The porch is outside…! Suz is also right on the weight could be too much for her porch…! ;-)
No fuel in this house. Gas heater is turned off. I am trying to get used to a small carbon footprint. Getting up earlier for more daylight.
In Oregon it is important to keep the wood dry. Burning wet wood sucks a lot of energy out the fire……. and I agree with the weight……..
67 degrees here @ sea level dawn, don’t miss the cold @ 9,000′, do miss the skiing…
I love good wood men.
