Lou Dobbs Gives Us All a Lump of Coal for Christmas
You had a clear chance to cover the most important news last week. But you missed it. Once a year the people who are really studying the earth, and what we’re doing to it, get together. This year they met in San Francisco, all last week. 15,000 papers and reports. The American Geophysical Union: Meeting made this headline on the AP wire.

i wanted to use santa lost a ho (also by the christmas jug band) but could not find a good one so went with s.a.n.t.a.

I HATE you!
Took an unpaid snow day today–the roads are insane. At least work was closed yesterday, so I get paid.
I went out to the bank and the Rite Aid this afternoon, 4-wheelin’ on the compact snow moguls, woo hoooo!
And I’m sure all the nice melted wet stuff from today will be black ice again tomorrow morning!
So tired of white frozen stuff. So tired!

and peace be with you bb
hey, bigbrother.
saw you got a hat tip in the Phoenix Woman post below
good for you and keep the good info coming. :)
Margot hello
Excellent post, Dutton! Of course they concentrate on the worst of the worst…!
Cox could have stopped the madness but chose to let it destroy retirement funds among other damages.
my calpers pension is a source of great concern bb. i fear it is gonna go boom in the bust.
Back at ya BB. Hope all is well down there on the central coast. Been out in your shell lately?
I’m not doing too bad in the weather dept. tho, it might be all of 67 degrees outside right now…! ;-)
thanks, bb! and equally, peace to you and all (and newt)!

Coal In The Stocking – And The Drinking Water
But a massive coal ash spill like we saw today in Tennessee – the result of a burst dam at a private coal processing plant – ……….
You’re talking about hundreds of acres of toxic sludge, the residue plants create by burning coal to produce energy, which includes mercury, arsenic and lead, spilling into the tributaries of the Tennessee River, poisoning the water supply for multiple communities, including Chattanooga.

dood, that’s my indoor temp! need i remind you of this escalation of force chart?
nite suz, night newt, night all
It is the ritual when the tide is high enough…most days today great full body aerobic exercise.
Write or call CALPERS and find out what is happening.
set it to melt and point it up here?
FunnyD
that is terrible. i saw news reports on it online. terrible toxicity
I take it I’m at the Disrupt, bordering on, Kill phase…? :-P
i’ve been watching the ca news closely – so far, no one has tried to take calpers funds to use for the state but… these economic hard times have me tightening my already tight belt – just i case.
Aloha, spurious!
The damp Oregon cold can be bone chilling. Might ant to find out what neighbors use. Most people order enough for the winter say 8-10 cords. get a little better rate if you have room. Sounds like the place is not well insulated.
Get a dehumidifier at Fred Meyers and you will burn less wood to heat dry air.
actually, i’m not as damp as i was at the cottage – which was pretty much uninsulated (just a wee bit in the wee small attic) and nothing underneath or in the walls. they have insulated this place as well as a 100 year old place can be insulated.
met a lady on the boardwalk by the bay yesterday…just got back from 8 months sailing in the South Pacific. I asked here if she witnessed the coral destruction by the high acid from CO2. She said it was bad as in destrying the coral reefs. Greenpeace.

The coral devastation is occurring here in the Isles too… Two major factors being cited are the unprecedented rise in sea levels and the warming of the oceans… Along with toxic Isle runoffs in certain areas…! It truly is tragic that none of the causes are being addressed one whit…! 8-(
The black eyed peas turned out soo nice. Mixing legumes is fun if you add a few mixed sprouted ones for enzyemes, the catalyst of digestion chemistry.

Jefferson the architect, writer, farmer law maker. What else did he really send L&C out to see the West. I should read his biography. Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville … were a Jefferson legacy. The wonderful minds of founding fathers…we need to encourage this kind of thinking and discourage backward neocon rot.
Are you kidding there’s still one more whole day…! ;-)
i’m doing firedoglake :)
the bride and groom are flying down to the sf bay area to xmas dinner at her dad’s – a huge event with lotsa relatives – and baby girl (who isn’t a baby anymore since today she turned 20) is in utah – she will come visit in february.
The Lewis and Clark Journals are a must read if you’ve never read them…! You actually feel like you’re there with them as they turn each river bend along their journey…!
seaside, where i spent turkey day, is a l&c site. there is a marker on the promenade marking commemorating the end of their journey.

Or at least the laptop, so I can get my friend hooked on “Burn Notice”.
OMG: Seattle 27 plows, 600 miles of Arterials. No salt for environmental reasons, and they won’t plow down to pavement because of lane markers and sensors. I’m so glad I don’t live in the city any more.
local footage from near me tonight: way slick, WTF are people doing out after dark? Ok they’re probably just off work (and paid hourly…). Just looooove to see the shiny, shiny surface of compact snow/re-frozen crap reflecting pretty lights in the dark! As long as I’m at home watching it on the Telly Machine!
Gah, and no garbage pick-ups, too. At least it don’t stink in the cold!
OOH! Audi commercial, guy driving through the snow so fast, he de-foliated his Xmas tree. How cute!

Uh oh, Suz! This doesn’t bode well…
storm pics: bands going right over where I am on those maps.
Hello, snow day!
And the forecasts keep extending the snow-ness out and out and out. We were supposed to have rain by today!
Have I mentioned how much I hate big water/rain puddles over compact snow/ice? Stink. And forget walking–that’s not safe either. If gravity don’t get ya, the drivers might!
FunnyD
No!
Just got my car fixed today and did an hour of shopping. But I got it almost all done.
yay for being mobile again margot.
ct – living in a temperate rain forest, i discovered i like the rain
the prom
I’m only too familiar with rain, Hilo is known as the wettest city in the country… It’s unofficial motto is; “Hilo: Where the rain, reigns!” ;-)
‘nite everyone
*cover your eyes funny d*
ct, i like the snow. its still brand new to me and i love to look at it. the flyover pictures of northern oregon are eye candy winter wonderland to me.
*ok, uncover your eyes now funny d*
but i will be glad to have rain instead of snow so i can run errands etc.
Can you just imagine what is going through their minds as they gaze out upon the Pacific…? ;-)
g’nite neuro – stay warm and dry
evening all.
hey sunny – how goes?
Aloha, neuro!
Oh, hey, I’d like it too if it wasn’t killing my income this month!
If I coulda brought ya extra tea, I’d have loved hanging with you and the Kids–I’d even have schlepped wood!
I love driving down I-5 and seeing the Cascades, Olympics and Rainier all blanketed. But only when the road _isn’t_ blanketed! I felt lucky to get out of my bank/Costco complex with my life and both axels intact. Pee-yooooo!
FunnyD
Hi, Sunny!
OK. brb for another couple mins, after TV off, jammies on…feed cat more Friskies.
FunnyD
i considered myself lucky to drive into tilly yesterday – there was still a lot more snow in town that i thought there would be. snow, like rain, is best done while inside. when either hang around too long, that’s when it forks stuff up.
Suz, ok.
So cold at nite my car doors won’t lock. Ignition works, thank dog.
(Can’t reply to your note – read a.images.blip.tv seems hung)
Several years ago I worked during a bad ice storm and there was a woman whose SUV rolled on the highway. Came into the ER on a backboard, all shaken and worried. “My husband is going to kill me!” No no he isn’t, we all told her.
So the husband comes in.
“Honey, I just have to tell you they told me about your wreck, and i was trying to get out of the plant onto the highway…and I rolled MY Jeep.”
“You’re kidding.”
Nope. Not kidding. So they both start laughing. ;)
What’s the latest on the bank bombing, last I’d heard was they arrested a suspect…!
try clearing your cache and let me know if its still acting up sunny
two
father and son team. the police chief lost one leg and the other was mangled pretty bad. they held the funerals end of last week.
hahahaha
bet their insurance agent wasn’t laughing tho
My bad – javascript was disabled.
Sad! Were they customers of the bank?
I’m glad that one had a happy ending. yikes.
The laws of physics don’t give a rat’s assets if you’ve got an SUV and/or 4WD. Unless you’ve got James Bond spikes to come out and stab into the road when you wanna stop, you don’t have any better stopping traction than anyone else! And energy increases with the SQUARE of the velocity, so STFD already!
My poor neighbors have a “fake” SUV. V6, boxy, black, REAR wheel drive, no 4WD option. Hubby is a hero: he’s got ‘em chained up just for getting to the grocery store.
FunnyD
I’z tarred o bein’ a weather warrior. I can has discharge now?
i don’t know the details ct they are pretty tightlipped about it
Hello everyone. I have been snowbound with 4 cranky tigers, so here is a song in honor of them: the Mean Kitty Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qit3ALTelOo
yikes!
Hey, Sunny
That’s cold.
Bet you’re not setting your parking brake, neither! Sounds a bit beyond the capability of my Aunt’s advice to carry a lighter to heat up the key…(knowing me, I’d set my gloves on fire trying that!)
I must not complain so much–I’ve got a covered carport that’s wood-framed, peak-roofed, enclosed N, S and W, and sheltered by the building. It’s heaven not to have to clear 8″ off the darn thing before I can get in!
FunnyD
CT I have been to Hana on Maui? but not Hilo. Where is Hilo? During the primaries there were a lot caucuses mentioned.
Heh, I’ve sung a similar tune before, however, four of ‘em? My sympathies…! ;-)
Was this near you, Suz?
I’ve got a “woodburn bank bombing” search up at google. Sorry to hear there were funerals.
FunnyD
Yeah, and we’re very low on catfood, too. It’s not looking good–I suspect I’ll be cooking chicken for the lot of them tomorrow.
My one is bad enough!
Clean the Catbox (rock the casbah)
FunnyD
On the leeward side of the Big Isle…
over the coast range and down in the valley – woodburn had two bombs, one at wells fargo – which was a dud and then one at the second bank (next door) that went off, killing a oregon state patrol bomb squad tech and a woodburn lt. the woodburn chief of police was grievously injured.
i picked up cat food yesterday when i went into tilly. she has me well trained.
Heheheh! (With four, I know better than to not clean the catbox!)
Glad you’ve got a chicken to cook. I hate feeding mine Friskies canned, but I could only get to Rite Aid, where it’s 2-for-1 this week, thank goddess. Plus my boy loooooves his chicken dinner flavor.
I hate that it’s got about half the actual food value of his Trader Joe’s tuna for cats (feed 1 can per 8# body weight vs feed 3/4-1oz per pound of body weight). Poor Buster, he’s kind of on a de facto reducing diet since he refuses to go out in the cold. Won’t stop pounding on the door to be let out, though. Somehow he’s a slow learner on this one…or maybe just a wishful “thinker”.
FunnyD
Sparta got rapped
Oh, that’s bad. Very, very bad.
The father&son perps are going away for a very long time and will not be treated well Inside. Heinous bastards. That community must be just heartbroken…always bad to lose an officer, but in a small town, whew.
FunnyD
Let ‘em out, He’ll learn right quick…! ;-)
Not to mention, I’ve got Anna’s hummingbirds that winter over in my garden, that is now a foot deep in snow. I’ve been going out every two hours to make sure the feeder isn’t frozen.
My neighbor has city chickens, and he told me that they are in the “Hilton”, because he’s got heat lamps hooked up in their coop and plastic up for them so it’s cozy. Other neighbors split for warmer climes for a holiday vacation before all this happened, leaving a couple of bunnies behind. My chicken neighbor made a rabbit run a few days ago, and now rabbits are happily ensconsed with warm and happy chickens!
ct was the one who brought it to my attention – i had missed the news that day and he asked me about it that night. tragic, just tragic.
what part of the country are ya in?
I know how you feel.
I have a friend who puts a waterbed in the bed of his pickup truck (old) and it freezes and he’s got pretty good rear-wheel drive, with all that weight.
But if it gets warmer…not so stable.
Not too terribly far from Busted–SW Washington state.
Virtually due north of Suz!
Nite all. The sun also rises
i got lucky here on the oregon coast – netarts bay had snow but nothing like you guys have had.
Exactly, except she’s out on the coast and I’m further inland.
g’nite bb – stay warm and dry
Aloha, BB!

No critter Lunesta™?
ellie! whazzup – we are usually ships that cross in the nite – nice to have ya up with us but sorry to hear about the ins and outs
Alright, ellie, pass me a towel… please! ;-)
ingenious – almost!
I hate the icy road, I was once tooling down an interstate and hit an icy spot and went smack into the guardrail and then did five 360’s straight down the roadway. Lucky me, turns out I only cracked the radiator, was a Grand Prix with a six foot front end and prolly a 424 cc engine.
Oh, he knows…just not until the door is open and he gets yet another snoot full of freezing air. He seems to think I should just leave the sliding door on the “short stick” for him like I do in the summer, so he can take his own sweet time comin’ and goin’…
Aaaaaand he’s off. Bouncing off the furniture time! Cabin fever!
FunnyD
Sand bags in the back centered over the axle works just as well, even better with no sloshing action…!
bailey became an indoor cat but eventually learned to negotiate the melt and reverted back to doing her business outdoors.
token adjusted sooner than she did – but he does not like having short legs.
Yeah, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by my 2000 Ford Taurus. Front-wheel drive is a beautiful thing! OK, and I’ve had a considerable amount of luck…and I’m juuuust enough of a wuss to stay out of the worst potential trouble…
waterbed in the truck bed. I’d never have thought of that. But then you just drain it out come spring thaw–when you want your fuel economy back!
FunnyD
this would be the year I need a heater/radiator flush. Oy!
oh lunesta for kitties, what an idea! brilliant. I’ll see if I can cop some samples and try it on them, it’s so cold here these days and the freezy rain is settling in. SO they want ot be were the snuggles are but still hear the call of the wild mouse luring their imagination to the great outback.
Suz I love the rainforest of the northwest — some of the most amazing forests I could ever hope to see are there, magic memories.
But the 40-50 rainy damp weather sucks the life out of me in my elder years (lol) But it sure is gorgeous up there. Have been enjoying your picture postings and descriptions.
Does he still shake each paw after each step? That always cracked me up…!
yeah, not the ins and outs conducive to warm snuggled sleep, ;)
I agree–Suzanne’s photos have been stunning! The sunsets on the coast are magnificent.
Beloved little car is 25 y/old – it’s always something.
I often have kitty litter in my car, but honestly I rarely HAVE to drive when the road conditions are incompatible with life.
The observatory still beckons, CT? Glad to hear your favorite lady is doing better.
*blushing* thanks
ct – not any more- its old hat to him but he did not like the big quarter sized snow flakes attacking him the other nite. he turned tail and ran back inside and it took a lot of coaxing to get him outside later that nite after the flakes stopped.
Glad you don’t have to be out in it too often. Since you’ve got freezing forking rain and all. Brrr. That’s one of my nightmares, getting caught out in freezing rain. Right up there with finding black ice the hard way.
But here we all are at the Lake with our cats and other critters and each other. I’m really very fond of you all, you know, my friends “in the computer”.
FunnyD
Yep, the next run up the mountain is over new years holiday, I’m scheduled for the 30th and the 2nd…! The better half is having her stitches removed tomorrow afternoon, since they can’t schedule her until almost after new years to remove them otherwise… I’m truly worried that it’s too early tho… Only a week…!
they only remove the outside stitches and not the inside ones ct. i’ve had knee surgery and had the stitches removed after a week.
besides, ct, she was feeling good enough to go shopping. if the doc looks at em and decides its too soon, he will send her home and have her come back
too bad they couldn’t use the dissolving kind,
sounds like you’ll be paying close attention to her wound , she’s lucky to have a :doctor: in the house.
you smash your knee in a wreak?
True, the inside ones dissolve on their own, I’m still concerned tho since the ER Doc wasn’t very thorough in cinching the stitches… I’m pleased that the edges are a healthy pink color and it’s healing…!
i torn it up inside and had an internal dislocation – my 8th knee surgery was total knee replacement.
Votus, did you say you were inland Oregon? drier there? less humid?
directing traffic – stepped in a pothole and did not wanna fall and tear my brand new uniform pants
Oh wow, surprised they didn’t make you wait until you 70 and then too old to use your knew knee.
Well, for realsies now.
Thanks for the great company, pups. See you soon.

I’m in Washington state, just a few minutes by car over the mighty Columbia River to Portland, OR. It is a bit drier than the coast, but not by much this time of year.

That sounds like a great gift!
Just a touch east of Vancouver–Camas. I would love to meet up with all the local pups in the spring.
hindsite is always 20/20 ellie
the 7 surgeries helped me go the almost 20 years between the original injury and the tkr. the technology for tkr also improved significantly per my ortho.
my stepdad had to have both of his replacements replaced due to his refusal to retire from baking. all that standing all day and his insisting on walking around their local reservoir resulted in the double replacement which was 10 times worse than the tkr according to him. he is now retired and limits his walks to 2 miles now.
It is a great place to live.
What part of the country are you in?
aww, hard to accept and adjust to reduced mobility.

The remains of PA Dutch Country
he had a rough go of it but is now happily retired down in palm springs area. he will be 82 the day after christmas.
That sounds wonderful–I haven’t had a chance to visit that part of the country yet.
aww now that sounds like the life.
Owwww jacks earrings. Tres cool! That’s what we did too. Outside on the sidewalks – bloody knuckles all summer long.
A few years ago I found luxury models – big heavy ones in leather bags with great balls. Gifted my sister, my best friend as a child and the kids I loved. The adults adored them. The kids not so much.
ok, pups, time for me to mosey on outta here. g’nite all and thanks for hanging out with me tonight
lot to see around here, including in Philadelphia.
Obama went back to where he scattered his mother’s and Toot’s ashes today…

it’s a shame to lose the gane of jacks to the ages.

Heh, I wondered if ya were lurking, newt! Aloha!
nite suz, sweet dreams.

Goodnight, Suzanne and all the other fine pups here tonight. I’m going to call it a night as well. May tomorrow be merry and bright for everyone!
oo, an old family friend is a re-enacter of the Revolutionary variety. Had relatives in the battle at Trenton, and I live close to where we kept Hessian prisoners. yes lots of that history around.
I believe newtonusr is ubiquitous, must be triplets.
Well, the wifey-poo is sawing some serious logs and I need to move my mangy mutt if I want any room on the bed! I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
