To achieve this, the president-elect, his national security team and all of us in Congress should seek the counsel of Gen. David Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command, and Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of coalition forces in Iraq. Gen. Odierno [blah blah hero of the
air strikessurge] is the person whose judgment should matter most in determining how fast and how deep a drawdown can be ordered responsibly.Based on our observations and consultations in
theGreen ZoneBaghdad, we are optimistic that President-elect Obama will be able to fulfill a major step of his plan for withdrawal next year by redeploying U.S. combat forces from Iraq’s cities while maintaining a residual force to train and mentor our Iraqi allies. By allowing a greater number of forces to remain in Iraq in the short term, we will be able to set the conditions for much deeper troop cuts thereafter.
They also think Bush should appoint a replacement for Ambassador Crocker pronto – but of course, Obama can consult:
As we reduce the number of combat forces in Iraq, our national interests there will depend to an increasing degree on the skill of our diplomacy. That is why we urge the outgoing Bush administration to act quickly, and in coordination with the incoming Obama administration, to put in place an appropriate successor to Ambassador Ryan Crocker, who has announced his intention to leave his critical post in Baghdad early in the new year.
And they suggest that rather than focus on that “unfortunate” “shoe-throwing incident,” we remember:
the remarkable consensus that exists among Iraq’s democratically elected leaders about building a long-term partnership with the United States.
Funny thing about puppets, they have a remarkable tendency to tell you what you want to hear.

is taking advice from HoJo kinda like taking advice from a concern troll?
Translation: “Look over here! The guy with the position on Iraq that Americans voted overwhelmingly against and the two guys who crawled so far up his hind end that they have residency status! We’re Very Serious! We’re still important! Listen to us!”
Great video, too!
Having read the whole thing, there’s an even shorter translation: “President Obama, when you do what you campaigned on doing, and what we and Bush campaigned bitterly against, we should be the ones who get the credit. Thank you.”
Wasn’t Odierno in Iraq early..and one of the original torture Generals?
Shouldn’t he be listened to only from a jail cell or courtroom?
They’ve been wrong about everything about Iraq from the very beginning. Why shouldn’t the Washington Post publish their ravings? They are the absolute epitome of Very Serious People™: never right, in favor of force projection first, never acknowledging their previous errors.
These guys are lost in their imperial daydreams. The question is does Obama share them. Removing the 16 “combat” brigades from Iraq would still leave some 50 brigades equivalents in Iraq so Obama still tons of wiggle room. He also goes back and forth on how serious he is about those 16. Short version: Obama hasn’t enunciated a clear policy or even goal with respect to Iraq.
I really think Bush might take Odierno home with him to
CrawfordDallas.IIRC, Odierno is a Fort Hood (Killeen Texas) fellow. So, eventually you could be right.
Odierno commanded the 4th Infantry Division in the Iraq war. He was on those who took a hardline on use of force in Iraq which unsurprisingly led to even more alienation of Iraqis. I don’t know that he had any role in torture as such.
I think Obama’s getting clearer on what he intends to do in Iraq. He’s added: “, of course I’ll listen to the generals.” So I think he’s following Lieberman, McCain, and Graham’s advice before they even gave it! What’s Ghandi’s definition of a leader: there are my people up there, I must hurry up to follow them? Obama’s people are L, M & G.
Since the hell when does a general set policy? Didn’t MacArthur get fired for trying to run his own policy, disregarding the commander-in-chief back in DC?
Aloha, Siun! Shrub should not have any say into who will replace Crock O’Shit…!
Let’s ask the real questions:
1. Is the 16 month Iraq timetable firm?
2. What are your plans to investigate, indict, prosecute and punish for torture and other war crimes?
3. Will you stop the collective punishment, and potential genocide, of the people in Gaza for electing a democratic government?
And for pete’s sake, Obama should not heed what the three amigos(McInsane, HoJo, and Graham Cracker) have to say about Iraq policy…
This waiting to see what the O admin does is annoying since he’s a dodgy politician and seems to be playing with all the guys in the big tent. Who knows what he will actually do next year.
I’d be happy if he closes Gitmo
Brings the troops home from the ME
gets universal health care
shuts down the creepy going on in wall street
and creates a few millions decent paying jobs
restores the constitution
holds the Bushies accountable
does some very serious trust busting
The rest I don’t care about. hahaha
Lincoln was beset with “military” leaders, that never lead, don’t suppose much has changed there in the meantime. Hoover was desperate to resolve the economic collapse he was faced with but conventional wisdom only allowed him to do the things that exactly exacerbated the problem.
The political overseers of the military do not allow the military to find the answers needed to extricate themselves from the quagmire they find themselves, any more than The Chicago School of Economic Phrenology is capable of solving the economic collapse they have engineered.
Optimism is beginning to mean those having it are out of touch with what is happening.
What are Lindsay Graham’s thoughts about The Gay and if it can be washed away by Pastor Rick’s version of Christ The Muslim Murderer?
While Graham Cracker may not be an expert on the ME, he knows a good deal on Persian rugs when he sees one. Five Bucks. He should also be a gay advocate, but strangely he is not one. Instead, he is a warmongering hypocrite.
McCain, Graham and Lieberman – the Three Whores of the Apocalypse.
Seems like the fearless trio forgot to mention that the border with Pakistan is going to need protecting.
BBC is reporting another cable cutting
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7792688.stm
McCain, Specter, and Lieberman belong in that special circle of Dante’s Inferno reserved for panderers. Graham is just plain part of the Dark Side central casting and hence resides several circles further in….
sharks eat cables sometimes. seriously.
Four of them, twice in one year? I think I need exercises to stretch my credence.
Three at once? That’s some mighty hungry sharks…! ;-)
yeah anyway.

One species blackopsis ciaticus is especially known for this.
What the fork is happening with those bloody things? “Severed” and “cut” have entirely different tones…..the first sounds accidental; the second sounds deliberate.
Nothing like what the vacuum of information will be for those controlling petro-dollars and the petro-fields production.
The cost for a barrel of oil has remained constant in dollar terms as the dollar dives. This may ultimately be the thing that decouples the dollar from oil pricing and cause the producers to change to a currency basket of stable currencies to price their product in. If that was happening behind the scenes, it would sure provide a good excuse to interfere with those communications. But that is whole cloth conjecture on my part.
Sometimes not so seriously – sorta like just for the fun of it
It just cracks me up to see these folks giving advice; they have such a great 8 years behind them, including McFool’s choice of Palin and his interrupting his campaign to fix the financial system. Both pieces of that, the disruption and the fix, also worked really, really well…depending on whom you ask.
Odierno is a Nuremburg flunky.
Anyone who set foot in Iraq to participate in the invasion is a war criminal, as defined by the Nuremburg protocols. Following orders doesn’t cut it or at least thats the strut we took after WW2.
Preemptive war my ass.
