Good morning, BT and earlybird firepups! I have a question about Obama and his big tent, disagreeing without being disagreeable, etc. If we can have Rick Warren at the inauguration, where is the seat at the table for Richard Dawkins?

Warren must have a funny definition of “civility” when he likens gays to incesters & pederasts, and advocates assassination of leaders of countries.

Well, exactly. Warren represents a fairly large and powerful voting bloc in this country. Holding him up as some sort of proof that you’re being inclusive is a little lame.

Just got an email from Andy Barr of Franken’s campaign, which said in part:

We’ve said all along that as the thousands of ballot challenges made by each campaign are reviewed by the state canvassing board, the publicly reported margin would narrow. And, sure enough, by the end of the day yesterday, the Associated Press reported that Norm Coleman’s “lead” was down to just two (2) votes.

In fact, the AP and the Star Tribune have both projected that Al Franken will gain significantly more votes, taking the lead at the end of the challenge review process.

We got another piece of good news yesterday when the state Supreme Court ruled that improperly rejected absentee ballots should be counted. The Coleman campaign had sued to disenfranchise these Minnesotans who did everything right and cast lawful ballots, but we stood up and fought for them.

Per Jane Smiley at HuffPo:

[…]
Rick Warren gets a free ride, tax-wise, from me, because his political action committee is disguised as a “church”. That’s bad enough, and I plan to work hard to take away his free ride, but what’s worse is that Joe Biden is asking me again and again for a donation so that he and Barack Obama can give Rick Warren, hate-monger, a platform. Joe, I’ve watched the transition and I’ve held my tongue and given you guys a chance to show your true colors. But don’t ask me for any more money until you figure out that Rick Warren hasn’t been buttering your bread. People like me have been doing that, and we are getting a little ticked off.

Per MPR:

Democrat Al Franken’s campaign gets to see any wrongly rejected absentee ballots counted. Meanwhile Republican Norm Coleman’s campaign gets its wish of setting a uniform process to identify those ballots.

And that’s where things get tricky. The court said Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, local elections officials and the two campaigns need to come up with that process.

“I expect us to get to this pretty quickly,” said Ritchie.

Ritchie said he’s confident that the campaigns can agree on a process, especially because there are only four legal reasons for an absentee ballot to be rejected. He said anything that falls outside of those four reasons should be counted.

“If somebody’s going to vote and they want to make some kind of a statement of some sort, they may not get their vote counted.”
- Ramsey County Judge Kathleen Gearin, Canvassing Board memberBut time is also a factor. Local election officials will have to sort and count as many as 1,600 wrongly rejected ballots after an agreement is reached. They will then have to issue a report to the State Canvassing Board with new vote totals by December 31, and the State Canvassing Board could have to resolve additional challenges from both campaigns.

Ritchie said it’s possible the process will drag into the new year.

I think Jane missed a great counter-point when this yahoo was trying to compare Warren with the Iranian president or Hugo Chavez. I’m sure people would be upset if either of those to leaders were invited to speak at the inauguration.

Talking to those with whom you disagree is not the same thing as inviting them to lead off your inauguration. There’s no hypocrisy there at all and it speaks to the sad state of journalism that the interviewer is oblivious to that fact.
