From the Associated Press (via MSNBC):
President George W. Bush’s two terms in office have been marked by wars, a global financial crisis, and a steady stream of political opposition. But his official portrait, unveiled Friday at the National Portrait Gallery, shows him at ease and smiling, seemingly unfazed by eight years of tumult.
. . . Bush wanted painter Robert Anderson, a Yale classmate of the president’s, to give him a more informal look for his likeness at the National Portrait Gallery. Anderson painted the portrait to engage viewers with the president in a "personal and conversational manner," according to an event program.
Isn’t it kind of curious that a president who was obsessed with presenting himself as a figure of unquestionable authority (a "war president," the "decider," endless self-references to being "commander-in-chief," etc.) would suddenly decide to go casual for his official portrait?
Seems to me that the only times I’ve seen the Shrubster in shirtsleeves came when he was posing as engaged and working hard while touring the site of a natural disaster. I guess maybe envisioning his legacy counts.
Watertiger, meanwhile, notes the special obstacle that the presidential artist had to overcome.

Now there’s one picture I can’t wait to hang on my wall!!
I really hate the idea of this clown having his portrait hanging around with the likes of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln. UGH!
Anybody got any rotten tomatoes or eggs?
Instead of a ring toss, perhaps a shoe toss type of game is order. Get a knock off version of the painting, pin it to wall and let the shoes fly.
I’m gonna hang mine right next to the painting of the dogs playing poker!!
I’m really disappointed. I was expecting something like this.
Separated at Birth:
George W. Bush and Alfred E. Neuman
Methinks Alfred is the more intelligent of the two…
*hurls virtual shoe at new portrait*
I’m sure poster size will be available. But could you stand to look at it – even to throw shoes?
Dya think Laura’s reading My Pet Goat?
In reality I have to much respect for shoes to throw them at him.
There truly is no god…
Throw darts at it!
Maybe The Stepford Wives for pointers?
Pin the tail on it.
All I have to say about W’s portrait is: Invisible JimmyJeff
I think that book’s too complicated for her.
. . . and horns
Why couldn’t we have had the President in the portrait?
Potemkin personality.
Oh yes, and we can add a pitchfork.
Imagine the suffering of the poor artist!
Or throw Hugh’s list into a hat and pick a scandal at random.
…………….*hurls virtual shoe at new portrait*…………….
How bout just hurls at new portrait??
Scandal charades anyone?
His blood hands are missing dripping red blood he’s spilled . And he should be a lighter shade of yellow to represent the fucking cowardice he embodies.
Are you sure it was his head or his ass that the artist painted? You know with Bush the one looks much like the other.
That would just be an involuntary response to seeing the portrait!
sheesh, even the portrait is a lie.
I was working on something like that. Thanks for getting it. Could we figure out a way to eplay it on Jan 19?
Ah, the portrait of Dorian Gray!
The Bush likeness prolly would sell a lot of dartboards. Seriously. Worldwide.
The man is completely deluded. First off, you know Dubya would greatly prefer the Flight Kommander Codpiece Suit. Even he felt too stupid to command it. Secondly, he doesn’t give a rat’s ass about appearing to be approachable or conversational. This is a guy who makes pull my finger jokes. The desire to appear engaging is the last thing that would occur to him. As with everything Dubya, someone convinced him what to do about the portrait and Dubya went along with it.
The best real Dubya portrait would be The Draper:
Dubya with his shirt buttons askew and munching a hot dog with ketchup and crumbs all over his face and shirt. Then he would look like the asshole frat boy that he is.
As I recall, he actually said at the unveiling “Welcome to my hanging”. I think he was talking about the painting…
No shit! Worry will also portray Bush to me.

gah, spelling. always*
He probably wanted his Mission Accomplished suit…how fitting. Accomplished that he is about outta here. Giving thanks,
I see a dartboard calendar on the horizon.
Great…leering at the volleyball players.
Also giving thanks, but you have to admit, we’ve had a bit of fun making fun.
(ECahn, I can have some rotten eggs within a day or two.)
It’s the post branding of the shrub. The kinda you’d just ‘like’, if ya got to know em.
Why didn’t he have a Coors in his hand?
I wish he would motorcade out of DC instead of using the copter because I would like thousands lining the streets booing. They might get arrested if they threw things but booing would be good.
i guess ‘the branding of post-shrub’ makes more sense.
R U still in love?
flipping the bird. ya gotta reach into the limo.
madly and it’s scary!
I’d like to get a black marker and add a little Hitler mustache to his portrait. Whaddaya guys think?
oooooops!
Anderson painter dude forgot the shoe print on his forehead.
back to the canvas!
When I think of a painting that embodies the spirit of the Bush Presidency, it’s this.
I’m so happy for you!
Kind of puts everything else into perspective, doesn’t it.
I think it should just be shipped to his cell at The Hague.
Very nice!
I’m looking for an image of New Yorker cover of Oct. 13, 2003. It is described in this handy listing of Bush magazine covers as “(on horse, blinders).”
The NYT editorial on 12/7 referred to Bush as the “deluder in chief.” And he still is and going out that way. But he doesn’t get to write the history and our children and grandchildren will know the truth – at least part of it – and maybe this horrible time won’t happen again.
P.S. He’s not that great looking either.
Well, honestly, it makes everything else invisible! ;)
I’d like to agree but the next several years decides if it is written into the cannon or not.
demi – just do it! ;~D
I have a 13 year old granddaughter and an 18 year old grandson and knowledge about the political system has been pounded into them their entire lives. I do expect them to carry on with the things they have been taught.
Here you go. Should be worth someone doing an Oxdown.
Hey, npb. How ya doin’?
I’d do it, but, then I’d get thrown on the floor and kicked and then arrested. I don’t want my FDL friends to have to have a bail-raising party for me.
And be sure to catch the expression on the horse’s face!
You nailed it Rev! That really should be the portrait! Perhaps we can raise enough to have a portrait of him in the flightsuit, sock/codpiece and all, painted and we can present it to the whitehouse.
btw, where’s your churh? I know you are local to me.
It seems a little off color to me.
Laura Ashley!
Thank you very much but I don’t wish to see his codpiece again – ever. He’s bad enough when in a suit but that pic in his flight suit was ……
Are you still chasing your husband around the house?
That was so funny.
re Drinky McTipsy’s “legacy”, Bob Cesca points out that this last 8 years were LIVE FUCKING BLOGGED, (massive idiot imaginerator in chief)!

I certain can not argue against the bright and conscience that reside in every generation. Simply it is accountability and a correction in our path, now as a nation, that will be most influential to similar situations in the future.
A retrospective!
Great find thanks.
ooo a rendition of Guernica would be brilliant!
On Moyers tonight – Author Sarah Chayes discusses the war in Afghanistan; New York Gov. David Paterson on how states are dealing with the economic crisis.
Shouldn’t Bush’s portrait be in black and white? That is after all how he sees the world.
You never cease to amaze me, Selise. You’re a marvel.
You too, Hugh.
Thanks…I think I knew you are local. I do not serve a church; my work is as Chaplain.
lol, good one.
i remember remember when it happened – thought it meant someone must realize the reality of what we were about to do.
Hey you. Have you wire tapped my livingroom? The mister just asked what Bill’s doing tonight. Thanks.
argh. just ignore me. typing is worse than usual today.
Thanks for this, selise. I was unaware of this little tidbit.
Talking about abusive concentration of powers…Ummmmmm
heh heh heh
one really has to wonder what kind of legacy portrait a president who would diplomatically pressure a foreign government to shut down an independent newspaper because one of it’s journalists embarassed him, deserves? I’m thinking Goya’s “Executions of the Third of May” which features a military firing squad shooting peaceful civilian demonstrators.
Chaplain? Like for a hospital? You don’t have to answer, as it might be too personal. But, wherever you do it, I bet you are wonderful with the people you help.
Thanks! I really wasn’t coming up with anything. Not even at the New Yorker Covers site where you can buy them framed. They didn’t even have the credited artist from the Bush covers listing, Anita Kunz, in their artists directory.
I do have a copy of the original issue tucked away somewhere.
Yes, primarily. And thank you for kind words.
Goya’s The Second of May 1808
Goy’s The Third of May 1808
My second favorite
Oy, goy edit –
Goy’sGoya’sThat picture is actually impossible.
Bush, the so-called Texas rancher, is scared to death of horsies. Even ones with blinders on. He doesn’t even like to stand next to one because they might do something to him.

I don’t even think he merits the drama and grandeur of a Hague trial war crimes trial anymore. I’d rather he be tried for something sordid like voter suppression fraud in an all-poor and minority jury in one of those states where they still have prison farm systems and chain gangs that actually wear chains. That’s the level of dignity that man merits.
I think someone or more likely a team within the VRWC is extremely aware of both popular and high arts, to the point that if they had a better-disguised product to push we’d really be in trouble.
I like that one and I’ve always been a fan of Goya.
see kosovo.
Sorry you missed the memo. Rotten eggs have been replaced by scuffed shoes.
