Top conservative thinkers agree that Muntazer al-Zeidi, the man who threw his shoes at Bush, is a total Pansy Coward. Why, he only faces torture & arbitrary detention for his actions, not summary execution, as he would have done under Saddam. This argument makes sense to them, somehow, as I suppose it would to anyone whose powers of rhetoric and ethical reasoning peaked in a junior high schoolyard, the fuckers.
Yes, "fuckers." It’s an appropriate term; obscenity is fair use when describing the obscene. Take, more or less at random, this shithead:
Yeah, it was rude as hell for the Iraqi “journalist” to throw his shoes at Bush, but him and others in Iraq who are doing similary with photos of Bush probably haven’t stopped to think that if they were doing the same thing under a Saddam administration he’d torture them slowly before having them murdered.
Were this written in English, it would mean something like "al-Zeidi owes Bush, because now he can say he hates Bush in public." Which makes no sense. But what was probably intended was more like "Saddam wouldn’t let you throw shoes at him," which is true, but not exactly compelling evidence of freedom being all that much on the march.
Rather, it constitutes evidence of what "conservatives" like to call "moral relativism" when they want to accuse liberals of something they don’t themselves understand. Just how safe is it to run around Iraq criticizing the government nowadays, anyhow? Exactly how committed is the Maliki government to secular, democratic rule? You know, "the rule of law"? Well, I dunno exactly myself, but one clue might perhaps be that even with the whole world’s attention riveted on this one specific individual, the Maliki government still threw him in jail without even specifying on exactly what charge they were holding him, without letting his family have access to him. And, of course, beating the shit out of him so badly they couldn’t even produce him in court, where there might perhaps be cameras.
Because the relevant comparison is not between what would have happened to al-Zeidi if he’d thrown the shoes at Saddam, but what would have happened to him if he’d thrown the shoes at Maliki without the world media there to record it, or if the gesture were not sufficiently publicized to cause Maliki political agita. At least, that’s the relevant question anyone who actually gives a shit about human rights would ask, as opposed to "conservatives," whose reaction upon hearing that al-Zeidi was probably tortured was, more or less, "great"! Or at least, "what the hey, torture happens." Something an ingrate perhaps ought to expect.
For me, I’ll just point out that a human being is very likely being tortured right now for engaging in political speech, and the President of the United States could probably stop it and secure the guy’s release by making a really trivial effort, and it hasn’t occurred to him to do so. And neither has it occurred to our "conservative" friends, despite their always impressive commitment to "moral clarity." Because nothing is more morally clear than the idea that maybe torture ain’t all that bad, really, you know, blug glub foofer glug.
Fuckers.

Thersday! Yay!!
fuckers
Thers!
So, it’s going to be one of those…
from the post:
Evening all.
That seems rather generous to me. Third grade recess sounds more like it.
Just skimmed, haven’t gotten in depth, but Jack Cafferty was on this issue earlier. Saddam would have been brutal!
I respectfully differ. They are barely old enough to know what they’re doing, and how awful it is, but not old enough to be able to back off.
Why does what Saddam would have done have any relevance to this issue?
cause somebody is gonna exact some Iraqi justice, and it would be informative to know just how far our glorious occupation has taken their judicial system
It has none. As Thers says,
How about comparing the current Iraqi system with other countries?
It would appear not all that far. Hardly surprising since Chimperator Dumbya always did have the merde touch.
Hell, Bush doesn’t even HAVE radar for the “common folks”. Take his fiddling while Detroit burns and his “concern is about the MARKETS” not the human suffering which the loss of 3 million jobs (at least)will cause.
No, Bush wouldn’t bother himself with asking for mercy for this guy. If you watched the tapes, you could see not only that he actually enjoyed dodging the shoes but that he was grinning his a**hole head off while the guy was screaming.
AND I heard al-Zeidi was torturing by US at the Copper facility at the Baghdad airport before being transferred to the Iraqi government. So, teh US torture program softened him up for al Maliki. URGH!
Hooray! It’s Thersday!
Can you Digg it?
We didn’t hear Iraqi journalists making the Saddam/Bush comparison, I’m guessing.
I raised the same point in an earlier thread about this Iraqi journalist. I remain mystified as to why a hanged man needs to resurrected to justify mistreatment of people held in custody.
and here they were saying aWol had a “lame duck”
Only in the sense of “they are no different.”
geez louise, is everyone still cranky after the warren thread earlier?
Well, wingnuts are all up in arms about how Putin is pushing forward a new law restricting criticisms of the state. But they don’t seem concerned about a guy in Iraq facing 7 years for “insulting” Bush.
The last ‘justice’ system Iraq had was his. The next one to come along seems somehow relevant, and comparisons would seem a valid measure.
Consistency is NOT a conservative virtue.
IOKIYAN
It’s OK if you’re a neocon
Fookin’ Fuckers !
No, but exhausted. What a thing that was.
I like that comparison. I always like it when some one points out hypocrisy. But then, I think that wingnuts take the Hypocratic Oath before they post.
I just heard about Warren being invited to the Inauguration … has that story broken here as yet ?!! *G*
I wasn’t around but I heard a lot of religious righties showed up after Jane was on CNN. Is that right?
IOKIYAN
It’s OK if you’re a neocontranslated:
Go fuck yourself, everybody else
there. all better.
I heard that US journalists are going to show their support of Muntazer al-Zeidi by taking off their shoe during a Bush press conference and holding them in their hands like they are going to throw them at any minute.
Nah, just kidding, they won’t do jack.
Oh and Thers, what’s with this swearing? That is so unlike you.
You will never get to go on TV with that kind of talk! Real journalists never swear. On TV. Except Morning Joe. Never mine.
Many. and they were relentless.
Hey! It’s hard to march without your shoes!
Did someone say “Thersday”? THERS!
Petro@26
That’s Forkin’ Forkers. Actually, no. Waste of a good euphemism for what deserves no more whitewashing or prettying up.
FunnyD
It’s Thersday and a Fuck thread…! Woo-hoo! That starts my all-niter up here on the right note…! ;-)
Hypocrite-ic oath, even.
Hey, eCAHN.
FunnyD
Heh. Next time I’m feeling particularly masochistic, I’ll call it up and read a few.
Hey, CT
how’s Mrs CT?
FunnyD
How ’bout “douchebags” ? Can we say that?
Get your head outta the Clouds ! *g*
Evenin’ Pal !
You really should read it. Have never seen anything quite like it at the Lake. There are some real nuts out there. Over 700 comments.
we need a moratorium on that fucker. he does make people cranky
She saw her regular Doc this morn and he gave her some pain meds and a anti-biotic… The incompetent arse that saw her in the ER didn’t do either and did a shitty job of stitching…!
The clouds are all below me…! 8-P
I got up to around 200 and quit … nice of Coultergeist’s crowd to stop by …
Well, the first 8 maybe … or are you on cloud 9 ?
And I should have said that some of the brilliant people who frequent these parts fought them to a standstill. We do have the smartest people here.
Suz, how many crunchy-munchies did ya’ll consume today…? ;-)
If I want to talk with those asshats, I’ll go back home and visit Oklahoma.
what an elegant way of explaining a very ugly truth. May I borrow it?
FunnyD
Then quit wandering around with your ass in the clouds. 8-P
You should have stayed around. As I said in an earlier thread, some parts were more like an anatomy class than a blog.
I don’t mind the comparison, but I do mind how it’s done in ignorance, from Bush down through Gateway Pundit & similar idiots. None of these people knew what was going to happen to Al-Zeidi; all they could say was “Saddam! Saddam!”
Meanwhile, Maliki was essentially pulling off an internal coup…
Bwahahahaha …
Touche’…
know what? i’m starting to tire of the shoe guy. and Rick Warren I’m very tired of. Everybody stay away from me. Totally cranked out here.
the day shift was groaning and asking for some pepto bismol when the night squad showed up tonight.
Sounds like y’all need a swig or two … hmmm, what can I whip up for a coupla thousand friends ?
… goes into virtual Bar …
Hey mang. Bad words are OK. But no flirting!
((((((THERS)))))
did they come here? i wish i knew. scumbuckets.
Maliki is a Bush boy to the core. Bought and paid for.
Heaven only knows what will happen to this poor reporter who must be a very courageous man.
awwwww, crap. sorry to hear that. Glad she got better care right away.
that ER in a teaching hospital by any chance?
FunnyD
They don’t give a rat’s ass about that. They don’t give a damn about democracy. all they wanted was to steal the oil and install their own puppet in there. They still foolishly believe Maliki is their man, so they don’t care what he does.
{{{{{ NPB }}}}}
Wouldja likey some snow, huh ? Wouldja ?
Go back and read the thread … looks like they snuck over Stevens’ bridge to nowhere …
Evening, all. Just finished reading the entire Warren thread. What a freakshow.
It would be nice to hear someone ask Bush what he thinks should happen to al-Zeidi. The answer would be revealing.
Don’t think so. I think he is a craven opportunist who is using Bush for his own ends. He will kick him to the curb at the first opportunity.
I wasn’t there when it happened … was out Christmas shopping and misses a Troll Barbecue … goes off to sulk while making a large pitcher of Chocolate Martinis …
I left a few linkies on Spencer’s post about the coup…!
Why, thank you, Twain. And excuse me while I steal one of those bows…
I was the
comicironic relief. Well…I tried.Like I said, it was fun, in a twisted, agitating kind of way. And the regular Firepups were valiant in their efforts to engage civilly and factually until the concern-trollness was just too overwhelming.
FunnyD
1800 Cuervo, double, chilled, with lime and salt for BFL.
(sets down tray, clinks glass, and drinks shot.)
But will Maliki live long enough after we are gone to do that. Would like it a lot if he did.
Good grief! I read that thing all evening, and all I’m saying is OED, OED. Hey who has one?
Ole !
I wish I had been better prepared…there was such empty headed bs flying on that thread. Most of them went away but that one guy the OED thumper was sure persistent. Wow.
You deserve to take a bow. Everyone was great. And you were the comic relief that kept all from going nuts.
Thanks
more like out from under it!
FunnyD
I think some of them were spoiling for a fight to begin with this morning regarding Warren to begin with. Jane’s thread just brought it to the fore. >_
Now i’m just tired of the whole uproar.
*sigh* … you’re gonna keep tempting me until I go back and read all of it, huh ?
Yeah, you and marymac were doubleteaming quite nicely.
some comments just left me on the floor laughing.
and I’m still recovering from cellar47’s Bipolar Daddy in the Sky!
I wish I could blame it on that… No, it’s this one Doc that works the ER that’s an incompetent fuck, subsequently, that’s why he’s the ER Doc because he has a hard time holding a private practice together… Dr. Budde…
LOL !!!
That is what remains to be seen. The current palace coup indicates he might. He seems to be consolidating his power. I would lay odds that if left to his on devices he becomes another Sadam.
And graphic ! Wow
It was amazing — good on our Pups!
Sorry to hear about Mrs. CT and hope she’s all better soon !
I just read some of it. Glad I wasn’t there.
Wow, Ron
Above and beyond the call…or just wayyyyy masochistic to get through that whole thing.
My bet for W’s response: “So what” [shrug]
Why not, it’s his answer for anything else that’s difficult and makes him look like the douchenozzle he is.
FunnyD
Do you think the clerics would allow him to do that?
What a horrible thought. Makes our “war” even worse.
DOn’t do it. You’ll just hate yourself in the morning. I grew up with those Chridtofascists and want absolutely nothing to do with them any more. You cannot reason nor compromise with them.
Well, the guy has been tortured, and many Iraqis believe he’ll be released then killed later. Not sure I see that much functional difference.
So what happened to your wife? I seem to have missed that.
1945: “Arbeit macht frei”
2009: “Freedom is torture”
We’ve come a long way, baby.
Not finding them. Linky to the linkies?
Thx
FunnyD
I just read some.
I can’t believe how dedicated you are to fallacy. Logical fallacy. First of all, Obama BELIEVES marriage is between one man and one woman. PERIOD. Second, learn etymology and look it up in the Oxford English dictionary, not the abridged version either.
Wow. “Fallacy.” “Logical fallacy.” “etymology”. Unabridged dictionaries. I hope they come back more often. Those people are really smart!!
Oh, he has. It’s about what you’d expect
They will if he creates an alliance with them. He is a Shi’ite after all. As long as he gives them their due, they will back him (or whoever else can provide stability while bolstering their power). You had to know this was never going to turn out well, didn’t you?
…which is exactly what they want. A strongman who will maintain order and grant extreme access to Iraqi oil and military-basing rights.
Hi, Petro and FunnyD! Word #5382 on the list of Words I Wish I’d Invented: “douchenozzle”.
Oh fuck. the time. It’s late. Gotta get to bed. Nite all. And remember. Wanna talk about Rick Warren? Get it out of your system now. No Rick Warren treads tomorrow. (I hope.)
and have we even heard from him other than that stupid “confession” letter? Are we sure he’s even still alive?
And it’s just struck me. He must have known, even in rage, what would happen to him. I can’t get my head around that kind of courage. Rage, yes.
FunnyD
‘night from the Bay, BFL!
Never thought the outcome would be good. Also never thought of another Saddam – just constantly fighting among themselves is what I imagined. Geez!
oh, believe you me, ol’ Jed just got better’n’better as the thread wore on. He’s an English perfesser, don’tcha know!
And that I refrained from asking him about Regent’s University, mail-away diplomas or crackerjack boxes is a symptom of how much else there was to respond to and read. Whatta ride.
FunnyD
Night, BFL.
While I was up here, tues nite/weds morn, my wife was tripped by the dog, shattered a mug, stepped on a large shard, and wound up needing 30 stitches internally and externally on her insole of her foot…!
One week ago today, my 85 year old aunt went to the ER for a fractured left wrist. While she was there, they lifted her by her right arm and dislocated her right shoulder. Now it won’t stay in place, has to be immobilized for 5-6 weeks and they say it will never be the same. I’ve spent a lot of time in hospitals with family and friends and with all due respect to the exemplary people who work in the profession, THEY are the exceptions, incompetent fucks are the rule.
Best wishes to your wife and yourself.
Worked out well enough for the Iranians.
(((CTuttle’s wife))), (((ratfood’s aunt))).
I am not sure that he can hold the entire country together. Depends on how he handles the Kurds and whether they can reach a compromise. If he succeeds, even in a reduced Iraq, I am pretty sure he will be pretty much the same as Sadam. Sadam’s big sin was not what he did to his people, but that he got a bit too independent for Washington’s taste. They like their hired thugs to remain loyal.
RonD !
Excellent word … I’ll use it this weekend ! *g*
well, the last couple hundred comments are the best. When the pretzel logic and rhetorical bait-and-switch twist and re-twist on themselves and he doesn’t realize how we’re all just rolling on the floor laughing at him. Forget pitying his ignorance…go straight to despising him and laughing our a$$es off. and commenting over his head. at least, I was!
FunnyD
Thanks and ditto for your Aunt!
Ouch! I am so sorry. Sending positive healing vibes to her and all the family.
Hospitals sound pretty dangerous. I think I’ll just patch myself up the next time I need one.
CT and Ratfood, so sorry about those problems. Hope everyone is okay now.
I must give all credit to FunnyD and my daughter, from whom I have read and heard that twice in one day.
And graphic !
WowOW!fixed it.
FunnyD
It has been a constant of U.S. foreign policy … when the dictator you installed ceases to be useful, replace him with a worse dictator …
Sending healing thoughts her way as well.
Much mahalo, ya’ll! My wife appreciated the condolences last nite when I told her about ‘em! *g*
Yep. For at least a century.
Thanks, RonD. She has managed to live independently until last week. Now she is basically helpless since the side with the broken wrist is her GOOD arm. Convalescing in a nursing home. I hope she recuperates enough to return to her apartment but it looks iffy.
Now I’m really ticked that I missed the Troll Roast … wonder if TLM will let one by tonight ?
Pretty please, TLM ?!!
It’s all about the ability to exercise military veto power over events in the MidEast, the Caspian Sea basin, Iran, and taking away access to Ukranian resources and the Black sea from the Russian.
“conservative thinkers”????
is that even possible?
Thanks, Twain. Steer clear of them as much as you can.
“Russians”
preview is my friend.
Did you see that one woman who made a comment was 80+. She really tore into him.
No.
This has been ….
Hmmm! I like thees pheelosophy of the Reepublicans, Natasha. When we take over the Amerikans we can simply announce “You have all the Freedom you never had before…simply do not show us resentment, because that will mean you don’t deeserve the Freedoms. You want the olden days. So if you insult the leaders you go to jail!”
Pretty much what the Republicans are arguing in this case. You have freedom of speech, unless of course you actually bother to use it. You won’t be abused, tortured or jailed for insults to the Fearless Leader, unless you actually Do insult the NEW Fearless Leader. But then you should be happy, because you jailing will not be forever, only long enough that you’ll be an old man when you get out, Shoe-Thrower.
I’ll try to remember to save you a bite next time.
Light or dark meat?
FunnyD
The Fooker got beat up by an Octogenarian … how stoopid was he ?
Light please and easy on the Heinz 57 sauce … *g*
she was effing brilliant and I should go back and find her comment again.
We had some impressive newbies come out and join in the whack-a-troll. Hope they stick around.
FunnyD
well, Biden’s VP now. Didn’t he advocate for partition at one point? if thinks don’t work out, maybe he can try that approach. (snark tag)
VERY !
I stopped reading ‘em after 550… Selise, Hugh, Raven, et al were having a field day…! ;-)
Gracias. I’m her closest family member and the only one who cares enough about things like that to get involved. Was doing 15-hour vigils while she was in the hospital (even younger folks can use an advocate). Now that she’s at the SNF I”m spending a few hours every afternoon. Trying to keep her motivated. She’s getting PT every day but has a long way to go.
How is her memory? My poor Granny fell and with all the places they put her during recovery, she had trouble knowing where she was. Very hard.
If not tonight, then soon.
I doubt we have heard the last of them, and we do know their marching orders pretty well.
That was for Petro @133
ratfood, I’m so sorry to hear of your mom and what she has endured. I pray she recovers and can resume living independently.
Huff Post reports Al Franken is sure to win -
I liked the principle of Biden’s idea … create 3 federations and run Iraq like a Republic.
The Devil is always in the details.
Oh, he really must be read to be believed!
just his “kiss off” comment will tell you all you need to know. It’s somewhere around 650-680, iirc.
FunnyD
LOL !
Bingo. Bush the Elder had a thousand Panamanians bulldozed into a mass grave because Noriega taunted him.
HEY!
Forgetting someone? [elbow jab]
FunnyD
Saw that earlier … Yaay Al !
True. That may be the only way to resolve this somewhat peaceably. I fear, however, that Maliki has an eye to turning the Sunnis into toast. At least the ones who do not come around to his side.
Well that is surprisingly effective. :-)
(((((ratfood)))))
(((((ratfood’s aunt)))))
She’s lucky to have you. I hope you both pull through to happier, healthier times soon.
FunnyD
Yep. I teach a section on colonialism (including neocolonialism) in my race and ethnicity class. Give them a list of US interventions in the third world since 1900 and another of the truly vile dictators we have installed and/or propped up. Really depresses and pisses them off.
It has always been apparent that BushCo went in to get control of Iraq’s Oil and all the blustering and bombing were just to coerce the deal.
Iran will hold the country together. No worries!
Thanks. Actually, I acted as a caregiver for my mom for many years. She had emergency surgery last January and didn’t pull through. Eleven months later her older sister is going through this ordeal.
Actually, when I say I acted as a caregiver for my mom, I should point out that I didn’t consider it a burden. She had physical problems but she was smart and funny and I enjoyed the time we spent together.
I wish every student in High School could learn about this.
Her memory is very good. She has been remarkably lucid considering the heavy-duty painkillers.
Thanks very much.
Hadn’t thought about that angle. Yeah, Iran is just about as thrilled by the prospect of an independent (or even quasi-independent) Kurdistan as Turkey is. That could be enough to pressure the Kurds into making a deal.
OK. But don’t make us do the Raven: Nobody. Cares. Until Petro has had his innings!
FunnyD
Does anyone else see the irony in Bush telling the Big 3 to be more fiscally responsible ?
Which is precisely how Saddam operated. Loyalty to him trumped everything else. A Federation that confirms and furthers Kurdistan’s aspirations to independence would be the minefield in that approach, along with guaranteeing oil revenue to Anbar.
ratfood, I’m hoping for the best for your aunt. Shoulder injuries are not fun.
Thank you … I’m a Cricket fan, so an innings lasts for days sometimes … *g*
When ever a FDL post ends up here, I’ve seen a few concern trolls pop up in the thread…! ;-)
Shit, my class is an upper division college course. What is depressing is that they mostly have never heard about any of this in their history or political science classes – in college.
Please give her a gentle hug and kiss from me !
Oops, My Bad…! *g*
Do you think the motivation for our colonial tendencies is economic, by which I mean greed? It’s hard to comprehend while we keep committing the same heavy-handed foreign policy blunders and (apparently) expect a different outcome.
I’m so glad to hear that — memory loss is a huge fear for our elders.
Gracias.
Thanks, Petro. Will do.
I know … it is ridiculous. How can we expect them to work for change when they don’t know any of this ?
My nephew completed his Bach. in PoliSci and when I made him read Chomsky, he gasped in disgust.
The problem from Maliki’s standpoint is that the Kurds have a functioning government and economy, unlike the rest of the country. They are also very united on this issue and are very well armed. They could make real trouble for him. On the other hand, see mine at 161.
yeah, but it hurts my eyes, so I try not to look at it directly.
asshat. still all about “the markets”, nothing about people trying to feed their families.
My Canuck friend is right. I think I really AM a socialist.
FunnyD
Greed and insatiable greed
Do you tell her about the Lake? She might like to know that so many people are thinking about her and wishing her well.
Huzzah!
Howzzat!
I’ll have your tea hot and your lemon squash cold.
FunnyD
all I know about cricket I learned from PG Wodehouse and Dorothy L Sayers
Yeah, the hilarious irony is that Iran has ended up the dominant power in the region. They have an interest in keeping Iraq quiet, so Iraq will stay quiet. Which means, in practice, at minimum one spectacular terrorist Sunni bombing a month more or less forever, and continuing friction about the Kurds.
Freedom!
Greed and a will to power. It is the disease of all empire states and we have been one since the 1890s.
Doc, do you have those lists in a format that could be easily e-mailed….?
Not exactly. Saying “it’s all about the money” never explains everything, only 90% of it.
The Kurds certainly are resilient. Given their history, I could understand their desire to be autonomous. As always, the deck is stacked against them but at the moment they have the best cards they’ve been dealt in a long time. I hope they play them well.
Er … quite ! Gin ‘n’ Tonic, Cuke sandwiches and a spot ‘o tiffin …
Tea is hot and husbands are not !
They are stretching their wings and testing the waters as regional hegemons. Remains to be seen how well they can pull it off. Be interesting to see what they do about Afghanistan. You know they are going to have to intervene in some way since they share a border and the Afghan heroin trade is spilling over into Iran with devastating consequences.
lisa upstairs
heck, we could start an oxdown diary and compile our wishes for Ratfood to print out and read.
Actually, I suspect she might have been that little old ladie who took a strip outta Jedy’s hide over at the Warren Memorial Fights and Hockey Rink. Or whatever troll that was. She pinned his ears back but good. and put a knot in his tail. Too bad he was too stoopit to realize it…
FunnyD
I haven’t yet. She struggles with the concept of computing but it will suffice to know people are sending good thoughts in her direction.
Actually I could probably email them fairly easily. Where do you want them sent?
Thers,
last linky needs fixing
Any bubble and squeak? Gin and tonic sounds lovely.
I’m wrapping it up. Thanks very much for the kind thoughts. G’nite all.
does “it’s all about the money” plus “it’s all about ME and my cronies” get us to, what, 97%?
FunnyD
Good on ya for being there for your aunt and your mom. I’m sorry for your loss last year, though I’m glad to read of the good time you both shared together.
Apologies for my mistake…
Night, rf. Sleep well. Give your aunty our love.
About 2 weeks after 9/11, Gaffney appeared via Satellite at a University symposium here in Toronto and student after student got up and obliterated each one of his talking points while the panel mocked his B.S.
Even then he was talking past invading Iraq, casually talking about also hitting Iran and Syria. But that night, he got hit by a Tsunami and looked unprepared for it … made me so proud of Canada.
Your point-but I don’t think the ultimate decision to declare Kurdish independence will be a rational, logical decision: it will be a romantic one, fueled by this: Few Kurdish leaders will wish to be remembered as the leader who didn’t found the nation when he had the chance.
El Gato, ees eet you? So?
We can get out catnip?

It’s money and power. The Bobbsey Twins of evil.
If you’ll click on my name, there’s a link…I would be MOST grateful.
EGN — thanks! Though now I can’t remember what it was supposed to go to…
Tweety gets in on the act.
The kurdish situation is the most troubling… If Talabani or Barzani get real ignorant and try and declare an independent Kurdistan or try to take Kirkuk by force of arms, Iran and Turkey will step in right quick…
Oh, I agree that this is not a completely rational calculus. I am just not sure whether the Kurds are willing to risk extermination right now or if they think Iran and Turkey will hold back if the choose independence. Personally, I think you would see half the Turkish and Iranian armies crossing the borders within 48 hours of a declaration of independence.
el gato – so nice to see you – the last linky worked fine for me and took me to an ezra klein piece.
I saw that … Tweety was great in showing his frustration more than speaking it … nice of Hitchens to leave Happy Hour early and appear on the show, dontcha think ?
I’d give it 24 hrs not 48…! ;-)
Dude looks like his liver is gonna let loose any second.
yeah. and it’s still considered churlish, I suppose, to ask out loud where the Fook he’s been for the last 5 years or so. Guess with only about another month to go and W and CheeKnee so busy legacy polishing he’s not as afraid for his job anymore?
FunnyD
They’re all saber rattling to get the best possible deal for Oil $$$.
Nothing will be settled until the new guy gets into office and Bill goes over and shakes everybody down.
… and also since he’s talking about running as a Dem …
The idea that this could happen without embroiling the US on the ground is impossible. Hmmm…I wonder if that will be the provocation for attacking Iran, and maybe Talabani is just waiting for us to say “GO”.
Nah.

Hee hee.
Actually I think it’s hard to generalize. It’s always about profit, but that can mean different things to different people…
I have had Yorkshire Pudding with Roast and Guinness Stew … that’s it for exposure to Brit cooking.
It’s the 2nd to last link that’s bad.
Tweety? Loves politics so much he now wants to parlay his name recognition into elected office?
Dam you! I just ate!

Our troops are the only ones between the Pesh Merga and Maliki’s IAF, a couple of weeks ago it was almost a force on force clash between the two until 101st Commander literally stepped in between…!
yep, thers it is and i have no way of telling where it was supposed to go. would you like me to just kill the link or would you like it fixed?
YHM
And you call yourself an Indian-Canadian…? ;-)
I was giving them time to get a full half the armies there. Troops would probably be crossing within hours.
Can I take a gander at it? , bitte schoen! ;-)
True! But the Turks already have half their forces there…!
Yep. The Kurds are going to count on us to prevent their extermination, and we are counting on them to give us our war with Iran. The Iranians will then defer to the Turks, which could involve contact between US forces in Kurdistan and a NATO ally, Turkey.
Thanks, Doc. You are the man.

OK. 3 hours for the Turks. About that many for the first Iranian troops and 48 for half the Iranian Army.
Gore Vidal, in “Why They Hate Us”, included an exhaustive list of interventions and military actions, but it is unwieldy. You might like it.

When people ask me if I’m vegetarian, I reply, “Yes ! Except for when I’m not !” *g*
Danke schoen, DD!
Thanks. I will check it out. the bit in my lecture is a bit of intellectual shock and awe. I show that list and then a bunch of photos of thugs we supported (Batista, Trujillo, Duvalier, The Shah, Sadam, Pinochet, etc.). Sort of overloads them a bit.
It’s a true test of one’s faith in the American ideal, when a young person raised on a steady diet of WWII movies, Boy Scout patriotism, and religion, finds out some of the things we’ve done.
Great minds think alike. I enjoy your enthusiasm in posting on this issue, yet personally try to refrain from the obligatory (and totally understandable) use of FUCKERS for purposes of mass communications, but I can’t say I’ve NEVER been outraged or fatigued enough to have done so.
In any event, I thought the same thing about those FUCKERS when I first read the excerpt you cite. It was from a day or two ago if memory serves, and I probably first became aware of it reading Andrew Sullivan, but at my advanced age, as James Taylor noted some years ago; “time has come and left it’s traces, so I lose the names but I know the faces”.
I may be wrong, but aren’t these some of the same FUCKERS who gobbled up and propagated Bush’s WMD lies faster than Jeff Gannon could suck the sweat off Larry Craig’s balls? Feel free to correct me when I’m wrong. Links to the Free Republic won’t suffice.
Are these the same FUCKERS that also put extraordinary sophist rhetoric to use in support of torture (mostly parroted from Rush, Sean, Faux, Bush, Cheney etc. ad naseum)? Did I miss the memo where these FUCKERS decided they ought to rethink their support of torturing the testicles of little kids, or are they still “On with John!” (Yoo)?
Now back to the original subject (Great minds think alike). Ready for some more sweet serendipity? Here’s a post I did over at TPM the other day.
The title is “Opportunistic Moral Relativism”. The subject is racism, but the main character is, as one has come to expect, a top level Republican.
The more I think about it, the more I’m willing to overlook your colorful and carnal use of colloquial curse words, so long as I still get to refer to the FUCKERS as enthusiast supporters of the torture of children’s testicles. Maybe Pastor Warren will explain it as necessary to torture the testicles of children because doing otherwise ‘might jeopordize the integrity of the unborn’. Did God not mention his stand on the torture of children’s testicles? Was he so preoccupied with condeming the homosexuals and seafood eaters that he overlooked the obvious? God gave us all noses, ears and and asses, never actually directing us on what their functions were to be used for. He must have known we were smart enough to figure out our heads from our asses. Too bad he didn’t have the forethought to forcefully and vehemently comment against the torture of toddler testicles. I thought that issue, (along with the Magna Carta), had been settled long, long ago.
I see a huge opportunity for Condi Rice after this adminstration, applying the same type of opportunistic moral relativism (OMR?) as we both see expressed in so many ways and in so many FUCKERS. Here’s my suggestion to her and my observations on same over the last few years……
She prayed daily along with the rest of the ‘God fearing” Bush White house. I’m not near as curious about Rove’s missing emails as I am on who phoned in on God’s daily conference calls after the homo bashing Pastor Ted got caught snorting meth off the foreskin of his male prostitue, I want to see her notes from God’s Daily Briefings (GDB’s). Surely she was keeping tabs? She must have learned something from missing that big HEADLINE on the PDB shortly before 9-11? Any normal person would start paying closer attention after such an ordeal. She can start her new legacy now. The FUCKERS could all contribute some wingnut welfare and she could open a think tank. It could be named the “Center Heading Research in Support of Torturing Toddler’s Testicles” aka CHRISTTT, which will of course be more informally referred to as the CHRIST CENTER for purposes of public consumption. That’s just how those FUCKERS roll.
DISCLAIMER:
My early public concerns over the issue of torture are a matter of public record, and my commitment to documenting the torturers and their associates will someday be enshrined at AMERICANTORTUREMUSEUM.COM, a parked domain I bought some time ago for that eventual purpose.
Enjoy.

Thank you, RonD. I clicked your name, tho uninvited. Your site is excellent and I support your views. You are writing history as it is, not as it will be revised.
