After reading John O’Sullivan’s attack on "compassionate conservatism" and Michael Gerson’s defense of it, I can’t decide who’s the bigger delusional wanker. Is it O’Sullivan?
My initial response to compassionate conservatism was to feel that it was redundant, vain, and self-serving. It was redundant because relieving poverty and improving the condition of the people have been important strands of every conservatism since Edmund Burke. It was vain because it indulged in an act of moral self-congratulation. And it was self-serving because it suggested that all other conservatisms were lacking in compassion.
Or is it Gerson?
Instead of being a "romantic cult," compassionate conservatism is often motivated by an ancient orthodoxy: that God is somehow found especially incarnate in the poor, suffering and weak. Instead of being a "sentiment," it is a conviction: that government can be a noble enterprise when it applies creative conservative and free-market ideas to the task of helping those in need.
The fact is, they’re both very, very wrong, just in different ways. O’Sullivan makes the ridiculous claim that conservatism is all about compassion, which is one of the most demonstrably laughable ideas I’ve ever seen. Let’s review some of the major strains of conservatism and see how compassionate they are:
Corporate Conservatism: Tax breaks and preferential treatment for corporations and rich people, nothing for everyone else. The poor and middle class should all be able to get by on a combination of trickledown, self-reliance, and gumption. (Mmm… gumption…)
Social Conservatism: Gay people who love each other can’t get married; women should carry rapists’ (and all other) babies to term no matter what.
Neoconservatism: Exterminate the brutes (but torture some of them first). Troops don’t need adequate armor, veterans and wounded don’t need quality healthcare.
O’Sullivan is right about the implication of the phrase "compassionate conservatism," which is that conservatism is an inherently cruel and callous ideology. Gerson tiptoes around it, but the phrase’s very existence is a tacit admission of this fact.
Where Gerson goes wrong is that "compassionate conservatism"… isn’t. He could have made the argument that Bush failed or betrayed this shiny new ideological vision, but he doesn’t. Instead he argues that "compassionate conservatism" is exactly what Dubya has been practicing over the last eight years and it’s been awesome.
This is a truly staggering claim, considering that Bush is probably the least compassionate president in American history. He fiddled while New Orleans drowned. He killed, tortured, and displaced millions of Iraqis. He vetoed healthcare for children. He slashed taxes for the rich and gave the poor nothing.
If that’s the compassionate version of today’s conservatism, then the standard version would destroy the country in a matter of weeks.

John Maynard Keynes said it best:
“Conservatism leads nowhere; it satisfies no ideal; it conforms to no intellectual standard; it is not even safe, or calculated to preserve from spoilers that degree of civilisation which we have already attained.”
Has there been any factual evidence to support Mr. Keynes’s statement ? /s
well… maybe compassion for conservatives is like the Tough Love movement. We’re being compassionate when we’re being cruel to you, cause by being cruel, we increase your chances of having a better afterlife. It’s all very 14th century.
More like 10th century I think.
OT.
NH update.
61,000 still without power.
Power is back on at the G household. My brother in Francestown is the sole member of the family still wanting for electricity.

Gerson is one of the worst products of BushWorld, and undeserving of further attention. Will he go away on 1/20, one hopes?
Heh.
Hi, Dr…Dick. I love hanging out at FDL, where folks know their early Medieval from their pre-Renaissance…
FunnyD
Who sometimes knows whereof she speaks. Now may not be one of those times…
Oh they are definitely Dark Ages.
I think the term compassionate conservative will probably be mocked for the next 100 years.
Glad to hear you’re back on the grid. How freezing did you personally get?
compasionate conservatism – an oxymoron
Well, OK, then the “Tough Love” part of the dark ages sure as heck lasted into Medieval times. (Not the dinner-in-a-themepark one).
FunnyD
From your keyboard to the Ear of the Universe. We can only hope!
Rush Limpballz, an Oxy Moron.
(I think I’m stealing this from Punaise…)
How’s your weather, Suzanne?
Which is a bigger oxymoron, compassionate conservatism or Rush Limbaugh?
Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.
Dood, I think you owe me a beverage!
But I’ll settle for the veal.
Compassionate conservative: a plain old moron.
cold but no snow – yet – rain should become freezing rain and then snow later tonight
Mmm, Veala Cola…
that sounds kind of yukky. Hope you’ve already been out to bring in the wood!
Is there a name for the white stuff that’s like Kosher Salt pouring down on your car? There weren’t any sun-breaks to qualify it as actual hail.

We had heat spell – got all the way up to 9 today. Might even get up to 20 tomorrow. Not going to last and we are supposed to get 3-4 more inches of snow tonight and tomorrow.
Oh.
Buuurrrrrrp!
i think that’s the freezing rain crap – hit you earlier and is headed my way
oh joy
wood inside but i should probably bring in another load or two or three before the frozen white stuff makes my stairs slickery

judge throws woman in jail for wearing a hajib head scarf in the compassionate suburbs of Atlanta
I’m so sorry. It was 37 most of today and it felt like the forking tropics. How we got there from last night’s low of 18 is a meteorological mystery.
Maybe you can name the Kosher-salt-from-the-sky substance for me. It sure as heck warn’t snow.
FunnyD
I think the most telling example of Dubya’s “compassion” was when he mocked Karla Faye Tucker (”Please don’t kill me!”). I only left it out because it was before he was president. But he’s still that same guy.
Oh, and the blowing up frogs with firecrackers as a kid. Sociopath.
Maybe sleet or what weathermen back in Oklahoma used to call “sneet” – a cross between snow and sleet. We used to get all kinds of bizarre frozen precipitation in the winter.
that forking smirk on his face as the shoe thrower was screamiing in pain while being pummeled by iraqi security forces and carried out of the room
So dya know the difference between freezing rain & sleet?
Yeah. Take your ibuprofen and put on the tea-kettle first. Is it your night for Late night? I forget…
I was the first of those who went in to work today to wimp out and leave. 90 minutes door-to-door, which is about 3x usual. But I had my smugness to keep me warm. Everyone kept looking out our windows “is it snowing yet?” “but it’s not snowing here” blah blah blah. I barely made it to the bottom of our hill and out of the Business Park before I started regretting that I hadn’t left an hour sooner. That was the freezing rain crap part. The snow part was the last couple of miles to my house.
Thank goodness for that little warm spell…we’d have had black ice otherwise, as others to the South and North of Seattle did.
Anyhoo, sorry, Eli, I’ll do the rest of the Weather Adventures of CaliGirl on Late Night (if I last that long…)
FunnyD
Sleet is pelletized ice. Freezing rain is still a bit “slushy”.
Well, M’dear, I rewrote it… ;-)
Native Americans in AK can distinguish between over 100 varieties of frozen or semi frozen shit that falls from the sky
*And* during the actual shoe-throwing and ducking itself. I interpreted it as “Ha ha! I make you insane with rage and you can’t touch me! Ha ha!”
I think the knowledge that he fills people with impotent rage is the only satisfaction in his life these days.
I thought that sleet/sneet was wetter and tended to glaze everything in ice. This was dry, thank goodness! Or only wet enough to stick to itself and accumulate but too frozen to spread…
FunnyFrozenD
You betcha
Wait, you have *weather* in California? I went to school there for 4 years, and I didn’t see any, except for a bit of rain and fog.
I think that number includes differing qualities of snow, etc. on the ground (soft powder, hard packed, crusty, etc.)
According to what I’ve read, sleet freezes in the air & falls frozen, whereas freezing rain is water in the air, but freezes as it hits surfaces. The latter turns out to be far more dangerous, as it is what coats trees & branches & brings them down, whereas sleet falls already frozen & just reaches the ground without coating anything.
No, I live in the next city north of Seattle now. That’s why I’m having weather adventures! Guess you weren’t much of a skiier during that college time, huh? Cali’s a big state…it’s just coastal/urban that’s typically so mild.
FunnyD
Freezing rain is the wetter stuff that freezes on contact. Sleet is little ice pellets (basically hard frozen rain drops). Sneet either has a structure somewhere between sleet and snow or is a combination of the two.
Lisa has some news over at the Silo!
R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Aretha to Perform at Inaugral!!
Ah, okay. Yeah, I’m pretty sure WA has weather.
I *was* informed of the “just drive to the mountains if you want snow” option, but I have this egomaniacal belief that the weather should come to me.
Basically, yep. We used to get a lot of freezing rain and sleet in the winter in Oklahoma. Turns the streets into ice rinks. No. fun. at. all. Also tends to bring down trees and power lines as it builds up much more than snow. Do not miss it at all. Give me honest snow any day.
It got down to 40 inside the house.
Chilly until I fired up the fireplace in the am.

actually, according to linguists who study such things, this is a huge myth that lives on and on and on because of its appeal to the popular imagination. All those ways of describing frozen white precip are combinations of basic descriptive elements they put the white Lego blocks together in >100 different ways.
FunnyD
I guess I won’t brag about the 56 degrees and intermittent sunshine today…… Has anyone see the pictures of the Vegas strip covered in snow? Remember it snowing once when I lived there as a kid.
Update – I’m eating (not much) and up and around the house. Had a 3 hour nap this afternoon (woohoo) and getting waited on hand & foot by Elmore :)
According to an earlier commenter, she is far too fat and her voice is gone.
That quote is a keeper… thanks
I can remember spending three hours one time hacking through 3″ of ice on the car door seams so I could open it and warm it up
Heh, be careful of what ya wish for, Eli…! ;-)
Thank you.
What I experienced was, therefore, imo, slneet or snleet.
It was only interesting because it didn’t last any longer than it did. It was too heavy and prolonged, and had snarled traffic too much, to have ever qualified as fun.
FunnyD
Yay! (((((katymine)))))
In that case, trickle-up is the ticket.
I saw snow in Vegas in ‘94 when I was visiting for a one day pass from Ft Irwin’s NTC manuevers… Btw, It does snow in the Mojave desert too…! ;-)
So, wait, there are no observant Jewish men (or women for that matter) in Atlanta? Or are they all in jail for contempt, too? Guess I won’t try to wear my medieval-style hair-net (aka snood) to court if I go to Atlanta. Maybe I’ll just stay out of that part of The South altogether…

I wqonder if toupes are allowed.
Always has been. But then I am a socialist.
or the humility to accept whatever weather is on offer?
Nah. Me neither!
I *love* snow. Sleet, hail, and ice, not so much, but I can deal. Also not fond of rain combined with umbrella-killing wind – I think I might have to get me one of those NYC doorman’s umbrellas.
Wigs. I wondered that, too!
Any way you cut it, 10 days for contempt is a crock of shit. It wasn’t a do-rag. It wasn’t “you can’t make me”. It’s part of some Muslim’s religous observance–and a very innocuous one at that.
Compassionate conservatism under Bush = we need to help those poor millionaires become billionaires
Gaaaah!
that was a response to FoothillsMike, and a demonstration that I went off half-cocked. FhMike said “can distinguish between over 100 kinds of” NOT “have more than 100 words for”. What Mike said is true. The latter is a myth, it’s true, but not what Mike actually asserted.
Sorry, Mike.
FunnyD
That is compassionate(sic) conservatism under anyone.
That is one sweet umbrella, a bit steep tho…!
That judge would have a nervous breakdown in Ca.
Suz, no comment on my 36…? ;-)
Yes, but consider how many $10 umbrellas you’ll have to buy otherwise.

I need to go get another glass of wine so that I can understand *g*
I caught it, another crossed in the toobz situation…! ;-)
True!
several years ago I talked to an Episcopal priest who ministered to the condemned in TX during Dubya’s reign. He said they actually had a macabre ritual where they would briefly take the prisoner outside before execution parading him in front of anyone standing outside (which usually included a rogue gallery of people holding up signs mocking him), announce his sentence and his crime then take him back to the death chamber to be killed. He said that the practice was discontinued after shrub left for WDC. I don’t even think they do that sort of thing in China anymore.
I am fading fast. Take care all.
Over at the Beach House we were discussing that Judge and one point that was raised was what about individuals who wore scarves due to Chemo therapy…
Aloha, Dr. D!
Just saw a great word – wrecklamation sounds descriptive of GWBs domestic policy.
Well, you said…
But I thought you said…so I said…then I realized you didn’t say…so I apologized.
Ahhh, nevermind. Red or white wine?
goodnight, Dr…Dick
The article mentioned a muttered expletive…
Yeah? So?
Jeez, that’s barbaric. And just the sort of thing Dubya would get off on. Because just executing them isn’t enough…
Moves ya a whole lot closer to contempt.
Especially if you’re openly wearing your Muslim-ness.
Still a crock o shit imo. Especially since anyone can allege a muttered expletive. And contempt can be said to be shown by any number of subtle, subjective, non-verbal cues.
Sorry. I’m so tired of the Powers that Be expressing contempt for ordinary people while demanding smiles and joyful singing from us and punishing any lack thereof as “contempt” or some such.
Damn, I’m feeling subversive these days!
FunnyD
“I care for nobody, no, not I, since nobody cares for me”
every time I think that such a man as would order that type of crude barbarism somehow managed to become and remain the president of our country for eight terrifying and miserable years I shudder. Someone who blew up small animals as a kid and taunts a repentant death row inmate as a adult is more appropriately hospitalized in a nut house… and the fact that so many people in 2000 bought his ‘compassionate conservatism’ hogwash when all this evidence of psychopathy was already in the public domain makes it all the more disturbing.
I think maybe sociopathy was mistaken for toughness.
I was going to say “enthusiasm mistaken for aptitude,” but you have it right I think.
Red
Got here late but this says that God is a free marketeer. So I suppose this would be a sin to be against them.
it also sounds like she wasn’t in court when he alleged altercation occurred. She was standing at the metal detector outside. The muttered expletive, if it happened at all, was made to the rentacop in the hall, quite possibly he had already detained her for the hajib, and not to the judge in the courtroom. If she had caused a scene, then wouldn’t it have been more appropriate to charge her with disorderly conduct or disturbing the peace or resisting arrest, instead of dragging her into the chambers of some hang-’em-up high admin judge for an arbitrary 10 days in jail for contempt? The whole incident stinks of good ole southern rethug bigotry – mess with the oddly dressed black woman.
Compassionate conservatism is a sales pitch of smoke up you rear view mirror.
Sort of like, a vacation resort with a swimmable cesspool.
I read this yesterday and had a similar reaction. Whether these guys (Gerson and Sullivan) are delusional is an open question. I would find it quite disturbing if they ACTUALLY believed what they espoused here. See Global Investment Watch’s post on this as well http://globalinvestmentwatch.c…..atism-huh/
