Early Morning Swim: Special Bush Getting Shoes Thrown At Him By Angry Iraqi Edition

By: Blue Texan Monday December 15, 2008 4:45 am

digg stumbleupon

  • Bush greeted as liberator in Iraq.
  • WaPost coverage of the shoe-throwing.
  • And the Beeb puts it in cultural context.
  • Plus, a beyond-stupid wingnut response.
  • Which in turn deserves a response of its own.
  • Gordon Brown to Obama: no surge.
  • White House to loan Detroit even more than $14B?
  • Is Google turning evil?
  • 2008 election — highest turnout since 1968.
  • Now he tells us: McCain unsure about Palin.

Hey! FDL girls. Jules Creatinden say you got no stones. You gonna take that? (BTW, what’s with “stones” and the w-nuts? It’s a favorite of Tucker The C, too.)

FDL — President Bush got a helluva send-off in Iraq. It was shameful to see the lack of respect for him. They don’t see him as the great liberator, but instead, the great occupier. I am sorry Dana Perino reportedly got a black eye in the melee. Sort of symbolic, don’t you think? Bush is a black eye on just about everything concerning the USA. I wrote about this on my own blog and I actually found it a little hilarious. http://blackpoliticalthought.blogspot.com

Do we know yet the fate of the shoe thrower, Muntadar al-Zeidi? I mean besides the dead cert of having the snot beat out of him by security once out of camera range.

His national security advisor and subsequent secretary of state has been given the particularly insulting first name Kundara – meaning shoe – instead of Condoleezza Rice.

Around the Arab world, if you want to escalate a situation, by saying for example “I’m going to thump you”, add the words “with a shoe” and you’re literally adding insult to injury, at least the threat of injury.

BBC sez he’s under arrest and has been tested for alcohol and drugs. There was a rally for him and calling for his release. And yes, I think it safe to assume he had the snot – or piss or shit or all 3 – beaten out of him.

Thx. Testing him for alcohol and drugs is actually humorous, considering another fairly dead cert, that al-Zeidi’s Muslim. Or did they think he had to screw up his courage that way? Pretty doubtful, considering.

I just hope he doesn’t somehow magically “disappear,” if ya know what I mean.

Love the ‘wingnut response’ in Blue Texan’s roundup. He says in the post, “they wouldn’t a surrender”, but yet, George Bush has ordered our troops to start coming home next June and was in Iraq yesterday to sign an agreement for troops to withdraw!

I guess it’s really the wingnuts who can’t recognize a surrender or maybe they just refuse to admit that their Fuhrer would do such a thing! *throwing my socks at them*

Bush grins when he is nervous? Its a tell, unless he was in on it and was trying to set up a sympathy protect the President and the honor of the office meme.
Bush is in legacy mode now after all.
Jules seems to be inviting the Left and FireDogLake in particular to go after Bush on this issue. What an honor!
Normally I would think set up…and I still think it is. But has Bush seen his poll numbers? He is not going to get sympathy for a shoe attack outside of the 30%ers and the Right wing blogosphere.
I think we just identified the Right wing Crusade of the week.

OT but…RE: the immoral (they make the laws so it may not have been criminal) transfer of wealth that has systematically characterized this last 7+ years

I’m just a taxpayer, but could laws be written to apply heavy capital gains taxes on individuals and corporations who gained money during this period? Comparing tax records would be illuminating, for example, for individuals who went to Kuwait for those “get rich quick” business conferences held after Shock and Awe.

I see a lot of baseball teams going to the Middle East looking for pitchers.
Iraqi shoe throwers, Palestinians with stones etc.

This Never Happened To Saddam

Not exactly what we consider to be within the bounds of free speech in this country, Bill Ayers’ take on that notwithstanding. Unclear how it’s going over in Iraq, though the report of the shoe chucker being dragged off screaming suggests Iraqis also view the throwing of objects at foreign dignitaries as inappropriate behavior. Bit of a violation of the Arab hospitality thing.

I’m pretty sure no one, including this ill-mannered lout of a scribbler, ever did that to Saddam

http://www.julescrittenden.com…..to-saddam/

Palestinians throw rocks at Israeli tanks. Saddam never let anyone not loyal to him get that close. Its sad that the Right is complaining that Bush is being treated like Saddam.
By the very people he helped Liberate!
Those ungrateful #@!^! did Saddam kill as many Iraqi’s as Bush? Did Saddam torture as many Iraqi’s as Bush?
Just what does Bush have to do to get some Respect! Just What does Bush have to do to inspire some real Fear and Terror?
Why did Saddam have it so easy he never worked as hard at being Evil as Bush does!

Casualties from Iraq’s gulag are harder to estimate. Accounts collected by Western human rights groups from Iraqi émigrés and defectors have suggested that the number of those who have ”disappeared” into the hands of the secret police, never to be heard from again, could be 200,000. As long as Mr. Hussein remains in power, figures like these will be uncheckable, but the huge toll is palpable nonetheless

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/f…..A9659C8B63

Another 22,586–24,159 civilian deaths have been recorded in 2007 through Iraq Body Count’s extensive monitoring of media and official reports. These figures, though undoubtedly incomplete, are the most comprehensive and well-established currently available, and show beyond any doubt that civil security in Iraq remains in a parlous state. Figures for the most recent months indicate that violence in Iraq has returned to the monthly levels IBC was recording in 2005, a year which was itself (until 2006) the worst since the invasion. 1

1Iraq death toll in third year of occupation is highest yet IBC Press release, 9 Mar 2006.
Year Civilians Killed
2003 10,077 – 12,010
2004 9,741 – 10,573
2005 13,071 – 14,324
2006 25,699 – 27,519
2007 22,586 – 24,159

As of January 1st 2008, the IBC total for violent civilian deaths to the end of 2007 is 81,174–88,585 (including our preliminary figure of 902 for December 2007).

http://www.iraqbodycount.org/a…..bers/2007/
