Of course, that’s not really fair to our media. Iraq is much more of a democracy than we are, so I’m sure this expression of free speech won’t be dealt with very harshly in comparison. An American reporter who did this would be whisked away to Guantanamo, with all the Village elders tutting their approval.</p> <p>Not that it seems to take much in the way of external sanctions to keep our media in line. The whole country has this strange deference to the awesome majesty of The Presidency. Folks who live in actual monarchies don’t treat actual monarchs with this degree of reverence.
